Pure Mott phases in confined ultracold atomic systems

We propose a novel scheme for confining atoms to optical lattices by engineering a spatially-inhomogeneous hopping matrix element in the Hubbard-model (HM) description, a situation we term off-diagonal confinement (ODC). We show, via an exact numerical solution of the boson HM with ODC, that this scheme possesses distinct advantages over the conventional method of confining atoms using an additional trapping potential, including the presence of incompressible Mott phases at commensurate filling and a phase diagram that is similar to the uniform HM. The experimental implementation of ODC will thus allow a more faithful realization of correlated phases of interest in cold atom experiments.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of the two-dimensional fermion Hubbard Model

We report large scale determinant Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the effective bandwidth, momentum distribution, and magnetic correlations of the square lattice fermion Hubbard Hamiltonian at half-filling. The sharp Fermi surface of the non-interacting limit is significantly broadened by the electronic correlations, but retains signatures of the approach to the edges of the first Brillouin zone as the density increases. Finite size scaling of simulations on large lattices allows us to extract the interaction dependence of the antiferromagnetic order parameter, exhibiting its evolution from weak coupling to the strong coupling Heisenberg limit. Our lattices provide improved resolution of the Green's function in momentum space, allowing a more quantitative comparison with time-of-flight optical lattice experiments.

Phonons and the coherence scale of models of heavy fermions

We consider models of heavy fermions in the strong coupling or local moment limit and include phonon degrees of freedom on the conduction electrons. Due to the large mass or low coherence temperature of the heavy fermion state, it is shown that such a regime is dominated by vertex corrections which leads to the complete failure of the Migdal theorem. Even at weak electron-phonon couplings, binding of the conduction electrons competes with the Kondo effect and substantially reduces the coherence temperature, ultimately leading to the Kondo breakdown. Those results are obtained using a combination of the slave boson method and Migdal-Eliashberg approximation as well as the dynamical mean-field theory approximation.

Validity of the spin-susceptibility "glue" approximation for pairing in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

We examine the validity of the weak coupling spin-susceptibility "glue" approximation (SSGA) in a two-dimensional Hubbard model for cuprates. For comparison, we employ the well-established dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) with a quantum Monte Carlo algorithm as a cluster solver. We compare the leading eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions of the DCA and SSGA pairing matrices. For realistic model parameters, we find that the SSGA fails to capture the leading pairing symmetries seen in the DCA. Furthermore, when the SSGA is improved through the addition of a term with d-wave symmetry, the strength of this additional term is found to be larger than that of the "glue" approximation.

Analytic Continuation of Quantum Monte Carlo Data by Stochastic Analytical Inference

We present an algorithm for the analytic continuation of imaginary-time quantum Monte Carlo data which is strictly based on principles of Bayesian statistical inference. Within this framework we are able to obtain an explicit expression for the calculation of a weighted average over possible energy spectra, which can be evaluated by standard Monte Carlo simulations, yielding as by-product also the distribution function as function of the regularization parameter. Our algorithm thus avoids the usual ad-hoc assumptions introduced in similar algortihms to fix the regularization parameter. We apply the algorithm to imaginary-time quantum Monte Carlo data and compare the resulting energy spectra with those from a standard maximum entropy calculation.

Thermodynamics of the Quantum Critical Point at Finite Doping in the 2D Hubbard Model: A Dynamical Cluster Approximation Study

We study the thermodynamics of the two-dimensional Hubbard model within the dynamical cluster approximation. We use continuous time quantum Monte Carlo as a cluster solver to avoid the systematic error which complicates the calculation of the entropy and potential energy (double occupancy). We find that at a critical filling, there is a pronounced peak in the entropy divided by temperature, S/T, and in the normalized double occupancy as a function of doping. At this filling, we find that specific heat divided by temperature, C/T, increases strongly with decreasing temperature and kinetic and potential energies vary like T^2 ln(T). These are all characteristics of quantum critical behavior.

The screening of 4f moments and delocalization in the compressed light rare earths

Spin and charge susceptibilities and the 4f^n, 4f^{n-1}, and 4f^{n+1} configuration weights are calculated for compressed Ce (n=1), Pr (n=2), and Nd (n=3) metals using dynamical mean field theory combined with the local-density approximation. At ambient and larger volumes these trivalent rare earths are pinned at sharp 4f^n configurations, their 4f moments assume atomic-limiting values, are unscreened, and the 4f charge fluctuations are small indicating little f state density near the Fermi level. Under compresssion there is dramatic screening of the moments and an associated increase in both the 4f charge fluctuations and static charge susceptibility. These changes are coincident with growing weights of the 4f^{n-1} configurations, which it is argued are better measures of delocalization than the 4f^{n+1} weights which are compromised by an increase in the number of 4f electrons caused by rising 6s, 6p bands. This process is continuous and prolonged as a function of volume, with strikingly similarity among the three rare earths, aside from the effects moderating and shifting to smaller volumes for the heavier members. The observed alpha-gamma collapse in Ce occurs over the large-volume half of this evolution, the Pr analog at smaller volumes, and Nd has no collapse.

Parquet approximation for the 4x4 Hubbard cluster

We present a numerical solution of the parquet approximation (PA), a conserving diagrammatic approach which is self-consistent at both the single-particle and the two-particle levels. The fully irreducible vertex is approximated by the bare interaction thus producing the simplest approximation that one can perform with the set of equations involved in the formalism. The method is applied to the Hubbard model on a half-filled 4x4 cluster. Results are compared to those obtained from Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC), FLuctuation EXchange (FLEX), and self-consistent second-order approximation methods. This comparison shows a satisfactory agreement with DQMC and a significant improvement over the FLEX or the self-consistent second-order approximation.

Quantum Critical Point at Finite Doping in the 2D Hubbard Model: A Dynamical Cluster Quantum Monte Carlo Study

We explore the Matsubara quasiparticle fraction and the pseudogap of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with the dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo method. The character of the quasiparticle fraction changes from non-Fermi liquid, to marginal Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid as a function of doping, indicating the presence of a quantum critical point separating non-Fermi liquid from Fermi liquid character. Marginal Fermi liquid character is found at low temperatures at a very narrow range of doping where the single-particle density of states is also symmetric. At higher doping the character of the quasiparticle fraction is seen to cross over from Fermi Liquid to Marginal Fermi liquid as the temperature increases.

Insensitivity of superconductivity to disorder in the cuprates

Using a dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation, we investigate the effect of local disorder on the stability of d-wave superconductivity including the effect of electronic correlations in both particle-particle and particle-hole channels. With increasing impurity potential, we find an initial rise of the critical temperature due to an enhancement of anti-ferromagnetic spin correlations, followed by a decrease of Tc due to scattering from impurity-induced moments and ordinary pairbreaking. We discuss the weak initial dependence of Tc on impurity concentration found in comparison to experiments on cuprates.

Effect of long-range hopping on Tc in a two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model of the cuprates

We study the effect of long-range hoppings on Tc for the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model with and without Holstein phonons using parameters evaluated from band-structure calculations for cuprates. Employing the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) with a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) cluster solver for a 4-site cluster, we observe that without phonons, the long-range hoppings, t' and t'', generally suppress Tc. We argue that this trend remains valid for larger clusters. In the presence of the Holstein phonons, a finite t' enhances Tc in the under-doped region for the hole-doped system, consistent with local-density approximation (LDA) calculations and experiment. This is interpreted through the suppression of antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations and the interplay between polaronic effects and the antiferromagnetism.

Combined density-functional and dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo calculations for three-band Hubbard models for hole-doped cuprate superconductors

Using a combined local density functional theory (LDA-DFT) and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) dynamic cluster approximation approach, the parameter dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc of several single-layer hole-doped cuprate superconductors with experimentally very different Tcmax is investigated. The parameters of two different three-band Hubbard models are obtained using the LDA and the downfolding Nth-order muffin-tin orbital technique with N=0 and 1 respectively. QMC calculations on 4-site clusters show that the d-wave transition temperature Tc depends sensitively on the parameters. While the N=1 MTO basis set which reproduces all three $pdσ$ bands leads to a d-wave transition, the N=0 set which merely reproduces the LDA Fermi surface and velocities does not.

Suppression of d-wave superconductivity in the checkerboard Hubbard model

Using a dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation we investigate the d-wave superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ in the doped 2D repulsive Hubbard model with a weak inhomogeneity. The inhomogeneity is introduced in the hoppings $\tp$ and $t$ in the form of a checkerboard pattern where $t$ is the hopping within a $2\times2$ plaquette and $\tp$ is the hopping between the plaquettes. We find inhomogeneity suppresses $T_c$. The characteristic spin excitation energy and the strength of d-wave pairing interaction decrease with decreasing $T_c$ suggesting a strong correlation between these quantities.

Charge Density Wave Driven Ferromagnetism in the Periodic Anderson Model

We demonstrate the existence of ferromagnetism in the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) at conduction-band filling near a quarter. We show that this ferromagnetism is not supported by Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions but is instead driven by the precursors of charge density wave (CDW) formation in the conduction electron band. To study the effect of spatial correlations, we compare Dynamical Mean field Approximation (DMFA) and Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA) results. We find that both RKKY and CDW driven ferromagnetism persist as short-range correlations are incorporated into the theory. Both DMFA and DCA show the precursors of CDW formation through the strong enhancement of the d-electron CDW susceptibility as the temperature decreases, up to the ferromagnetic transition temperature. In addition, the DCA captures the signal of a band gap opening due to Peierls instability.

Systematic analysis of a spin-susceptibility representation of the pairing interaction in the 2D Hubbard model

A dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo algorithm is used to study a spin susceptibility representation of the pairing interaction for the two-dimensional Hubbard model with an on-site Coulomb interaction equal to the bandwidth for various doping levels. We find that the pairing interaction is well approximated by ${3/2}\Ub(T)^2χ(K-K')$ with an effective temperature and doping dependent coupling $\Ub(T)$ and the numerically calculated spin susceptibility $χ(K-K')$. We show that at low temperatures, $\Ub$ may be accurately determined from a corresponding spin susceptibility based calculation of the single-particle self-energy. We conclude that the strength of the d-wave pairing interaction, characterized by the mean-field transition temperature, can be determined from a knowledge of the dressed spin susceptibility and the nodal quasiparticle spectral weight. This has important implications with respect to the questions of whether spin fluctuations are responsible for pairing in the high-T$_c$ cuprates.

High energy kink in the single particle spectra of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Employing dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo calculations we show that the single particle spectral weight A(k,w) of the one-band two-dimensional Hubbard model displays a high energy kink in the quasiparticle dispersion followed by a steep dispersion of a broad peak similar to recent ARPES results reported for the cuprates. Based on the agreement between the Monte Carlo results and a simple calculation which couples the quasiparticle to spin fluctuations, we conclude that the kink and the broad spectral feature in the Hubbard model spectra is due to scattering with damped high energy spin fluctuations.

Spin Susceptibility Representation of the Pairing Interaction for the two-dimensional Hubbard Model

Using numerical dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo results, we study a simple approximation for the pairing interaction of a two-dimensional Hubbard model with an on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ equal to the bandwidth. We find that with an effective temperature dependent coupling $\Ub(T)$ and the numerically calculated spin susceptibility $χ(K-K')$, the d-wave pairing interaction is well approximated by $\frac{3}{2} \Ub^2χ(K-K')$.

Multi-scale Extensions to Quantum Cluster Methods for Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

A numerically implementable Multi-scale Many-Body approach to strongly correlated electron systems is introduced. An extension to quantum cluster methods, it approximates correlations on any given length-scale commensurate with the strength of the correlations on the respective scale. Short length-scales are treated explicitly, long ones are addressed at a mean-field level and intermediate length-regime correlations are assumed to be weak and are approximated diagrammatically. To illustrate and test this method, we apply it to the one dimensional Hubbard model. The resulting multi-scale self-energy provides a very good quantitative agreement with substantially more numerically expensive, explicit Quantum Monte-Carlo calculations.
