Dynamics of viscous amphiphilic films supported by elastic solid substrates

The dynamics of amphiphilic films deposited on a solid surface is analyzed for the case when shear oscillations of the solid surface are excited. The two cases of surface- and bulk shear waves are studied with film exposed to gas or to a liquid. By solving the corresponding dispersion equation and the wave equation while maintaining the energy balance we are able to connect the surface density and the shear viscocity of a fluid amphiphilic overlayer with experimentally accessible damping coefficients, phase velocity, dissipation factor and resonant frequency shifts of shear waves.

Fractional pumping of energy into a ballistic quantum ring

We consider the energy stored in a one-dimensional ballistic ring with a barrier subject to a linearly time-dependent magnetic flux. An exact analytic solution for the quantum dynamics of electrons in the ring is found for the case when the electro-motive force ${\cal E}$ is much smaller than the level spacing, $Δ$. Electron states exponentially localized in energy are found for irrational values of the ratio $A\equivΔ/2e{\cal E}$. Relaxation limits the dynamic evolution and localization does not develop if $A$ is sufficiently close to a rational number. As a result the accumulated energy becomes a regular function of $A$ containing a set of sharp peaks at rational values (fractional pumping). The shape of the peaks and the distances between them are governed by the interplay between the strength of backscattering and the relaxation rate.

Spatial Structure in Mode Population Induced by Coherent Pumping in a Ballistic Quantum Channel

We predict a spatially varying mode population to appear in a GaAs/AlGaAs-2DEG ballistic quantum channel pumped by a THz-field. If a resonant coupling between two modes is suddenly switched on at the entrance, Rabi oscillations in the mode population will arise. We propose to use an array of gates in order to simulate a moving quantum point contact for detecting the mode population oscillations, since they discriminate between different modes. By consecutively activating them we expect to see both photovoltaic effects and photoconductive effects which can easily be distinguished from noise.

Persistent current in a one-dimensional ring of fractionally charged "exclusons''

The Aharonov-Bohm effect in a one-dimensional (1D) ring containing a gas of fractionally charged excitations is considered. It is shown that the low temperature behavior of the system is identical to that of free electrons with (integer) charge $e$. This is a direct consequence of the fact that the total charge in the ring is quantized in units of the electron charge. Anomalous oscillations of the persistent current amplitude with temperature are predicted to occur as a direct manifistation of the fractional nature of the quasiparticle charge. A 1D conducting ring with gate induced periodical potential is discussed as a possible set-up for an experimental observation of the predicted phenomenon.

Excess Resistance Effect in a Normal Metal Contacting a Superconductor

In relatively pure normal samples contacting a superconductor we consider the excess resistance effect (that is a decrease of the total electrical resistance of the sample after transition of the superconducting part into the normal state) and determine conditions under which the effect arises.

Coulomb Blockade-Effects on Quantization of Charge and Persistent Current in a Luttinger-Liquid Ring

We show that in a ring-shaped Luttinger Liquid (LL) in contact with an electron reservoir --- the chemical potential in the ring being controlled by a gate voltage $V_g$ --- both the average ring charge and the persistent current in the ring are step-like functions of $V_g$ at low temperatures. The step positions are determined by the LL parameter $α=v_F/s$, which therefore can be directly measured. We study electrons both with and without spin, taking into account long-range interactions in the ring.

MICROWAVE-INDUCED RESONANT REFLECTION AND LOCALIZATION OF BALLISTIC ELECTRONS IN QUANTUM MICROCHANNELS

We show that electron transport in a ballistic microchannel supporting both propagating and reflected modes can be completely blocked by applying a microwave electromagnetic field. The effect is due to resonant reflection caused by multiple coherent electron-photon scattering involving at least two spatially localized scattering centers in the channel. With many such scattering centers present the conductance is shown to have an irregular dependence on bias voltage, gate voltage and frequency with irregularily spaced dips corresponding to resonant reflection. When averaged over bias, gate voltage or frequency the conductance will decay exponentially with channel length in full analogy with the localization of 1D electrons caused by impurity scattering.

Mesoscopic Conductance Oscillations in a Normal Sample Controlled by the Superconductivity of an NS Boundary

An arrangement of mesoscopic experiments is considered when the conductance of a mesoscopic normal metal sample is governed not only by the magnetic flux threading the sample but by the supercurrent inside the superconductor coupled to the normal metal sample as well. The conductance of the system is shown to be associated with the SNS Josephson current $j_J$ through the normal part of the system. By way of example we consider a model when quasi1D wire is connected to a superconductor by its ends and coupled to two reservoirs of electrons by the normal metallic leads. The conductance oscillations caused by change of magnetic field and the supercurrent inside the superconductor have been calculated. The possibility of direct observation of the Josephson current through measurement of the thermal noise in the normal conductor is suggested.

Aharonov-Bohm Oscillations in a One-Dimensional Wigner Crystal-Ring

We calculate the magnetic moment (`persistent current') in a strongly correlated electron system --- a Wigner crystal --- in a one-dimensional ballistic ring. The flux and temperature dependence of the persistent current in a perfect ring is shown to be essentially the same as for a system of non-interacting electrons. In contrast, by incorporating into the ring geometry a tunnel barrier that pins the Wigner crystal, the current is suppressed and its temperature dependence is drastically changed. The competition between two temperature effects --- the reduced barrier height for macroscopic tunneling and loss of quantum coherence --- may result in a sharp peak in the temperature dependence. The character of the macroscopic quantum tunneling of a Wigner crystal ring is dictated by the strength of pinning. At strong pinning the tunneling of a rigid Wigner crystal chain is highly inhomogeneous, and the persistent current has a well-defined peak at $T\sim 0.5\ \hbar s/L$ independent of the barrier height ($s$ is the sound velocity of the Wigner crystal, $L$ is the length of the ring). In the weak pinning regime, the Wigner crystal tunnels through the barrier as a whole and if $V_p>T_0$ the effect of the barrier is to suppress the current amplitude and to shift the crossover temperature from $T_0$ to $T^*\simeq \sqrt{V_{p}T_{0}}$. ($V_{p}$ is the amplitude of the pinning potential, $T_{0} =\hbar v_{F}/L ,\; v_{F}\sim \hbar/ma $ is the drift velocity of a Wigner crystal ring with lattice spacing $a$). For very weak pinning, $V_p\ll T_0$, the influence of the barrier on the persistent current of a Wigner crystal ring is negligibly small.

Noise in a Quantum Point Contact due to a Fluctuating Impurity Configuration

We propose a theoretical model for the low-frequency noise observed in a quantum point contact (QPC) electrostatically defined in the 2D electron gas at a GaAs-AlGaAs interface. In such contacts electron scattering by soft impurity- or boundary potentials coherently splits an incoming wave function between different transverse modes. Interference between these modes have been suggested to explain observed non-linearities in the QPC-conductance. In this study we invoke the same mechanism and the time-dependent current due to soft dynamical impurity scattering in order to analyze the low-frequency (telegraph-like) noise which has been observed along with a nonlinear conductance. For the simplified case of a channel with two extended (current carrying) modes, a simple analytical formula for the noise intensity is derived. Generally we have found qualitative similarities between the noise and the square of the transconductance. Nevertheless, incidentally there may be situations when noise is suppressed but transconductance enhanced.

Influence of Long-Range Coulomb Forces and Dissipation on the Persistent Current of a Wigner Crystal-Ring

The influence of long-range Coulomb forces on the persistent current of a pinned Wigner crystal-ring is considered. A simple method is proposed for how to take into account Coulomb effects for the macroscopic quantum tunneling of the Wigner crystal. It is shown that unscreened Coulomb interactions increase the stiffness of the Wigner lattice. This leads to additional suppression of the amplitude of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations, but makes the predicted anomalous temperature dependence of the persistent current more pronounced. The impact of dissipation on the persistent current of a Wigner crystal-ring is also studied.

Influence of Long-Range Coulomb Interactions on the Metal-Insulator Transition in One-Dimensional Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

The influence of long-range Coulomb interactions on the properties of one-dimensional (1D) strongly correlated electron systems in vicinity of the metal-insulator phase transition is considered. It is shown that unscreened repulsive Coulomb forces lead to the formation of a 1D Wigner crystal in the metallic phase and to the transformation of the square-root singularity of the compressibility (characterizing the commensurate-incommensurate transition) to a logarithmic singularity. The properties of the insulating (Mott) phase depend on the character of the short-wavelength screening of the Coulomb forces. For a sufficiently short screening length the characteristics of the charge excitations in the insulating phase are totally determined by the Coulomb interaction and these quasipartic les can be described as quasiclassical Coulomb solitons.

Non-Equilibrium Magnetization in a Ballistic Quantum Dot

We show that Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations in the magnetic moment of an integrable ballistic quantum dot can be destroyed by a time dependent magnetic flux. The effect is due to a nonequilibrium population of perfectly coherent electronic states. For real ballistic systems the equilibrization process, which involves a special type of inelastic electron backscattering, can be so ineffective, that AB oscillations are suppressed when the flux varies with frequency $ω\sim$ 10$^7$-10$^8$ s$^{-1}$. The effect can be used to measure relaxation times for inelastic backscattering.

Spectroscopy of the Potential Profile in a Ballistic Quantum Constriction

We present a theory for the nonlinear current-voltage characteristics of a ballistic quantum constriction. Nonlinear features first develop because of above-barrier reflection from the potential profile, created by impurities in the vicinity of the constriction. The nonlinearity appears on a small voltage scale and makes it possible to determine distances between impurities as well as the magnitude of the impurity potentials.
