Prospects of searches for invisible $B$-meson decays at FCC-ee

We investigate the physics reach and potential for the study of $B$-meson decays to invisible final states at the Future Circular Collider running electron-positron collisions at the $Z$ pole (FCC-ee). Signal and background candidates are simulated for a proposed multipurpose detector, including inclusive contributions from $Z$ decays to leptons or quarks. Signal candidates are selected by a mixture of rectangular cuts and a multiclass boosted decision tree classifier. We determine that branching fractions above $7.6\times10^{-9}$ ($9.7\times10^{-9}$) would be excluded at 90% (95%) confidence level, and branching fractions above $3.0\times10^{-8}$ would be within discovery reach at FCC-ee if $6\times 10^{12}$ $Z$ bosons are produced.

HFLAV input to the 2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

Heavy-flavour physics is an essential component of the particle-physics programme, offering critical tests of the Standard Model and far-reaching sensitivity to physics beyond it. Experiments such as LHCb, Belle II, and BESIII drive progress in the field, along with contributions from ATLAS and CMS. The LHCb Upgrade II and upgraded Belle II experiments will provide unique and highly sensitive measurements for decades, playing a key role in the searches for new physics. Future facilities with significant heavy-flavour capabilities will further expand these opportunities. We advocate for a European Strategy that fully supports Upgrade II of LHCb and an upgrade of Belle II, along with their subsequent exploitation. Additionally, we support a long-term plan that fully integrates flavour physics in an $e^+e^-$ collider to run as a $Z$ factory.

Averages of $b$-hadron, $c$-hadron, and $\tau$-lepton properties as of 2021

This paper reports world averages of measurements of $b$-hadron, $c$-hadron, and $\tau$-lepton properties obtained by the Heavy Flavour Averaging Group using results available before April 2021. In rare cases, significant results obtained several months later are also used. For the averaging, common input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and known correlations are taken into account. The averages include branching fractions, lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, CP violation parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays, and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements.

Snowmass 2021 Letter of Interest: Decays of Heavy Flavors Beauty, Charm, and Tau

The Heavy Flavor Averaging Group provides this Letter of Interest (LOI) as input to the Snowmass 2021 Particle Physics Community Planning Exercise organized by the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. Research in heavy flavor physics is an essential component of particle physics, both within and beyond the Standard Model. To fully realize the potential of this field, we advocate strong support within the U.S. high energy physics program for ongoing and future experimental and theory research in heavy flavor physics.

Origins of the method to determine the CKM angle $\gamma$ using $B^{\pm} \to D K^{\pm}$, $D \to K_{\rm S}^0\pi^+\pi^-$ decays

The angle $\gamma$ of the Cabibbo--Kobayashi--Maskawa unitarity triangle is a benchmark parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics. A method to determine $\gamma$ from $B^{\pm} \to D K^{\pm}$ with subsequent $D \to K_{\rm S}^0\pi^+\pi^-$ or similar multibody decays has been proven to provide good sensitivity. We review the first discussions on the use of this technique, and its impact subsequently. We propose that this approach should be referred to as the BPGGSZ method.

Averages of $b$-hadron, $c$-hadron, and $\tau$-lepton properties as of 2018

This paper reports world averages of measurements of $b$-hadron, $c$-hadron, and $\tau$-lepton properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group using results available through September 2018.

Study of the sensitivity to CKM angle $\gamma$ under simultaneous determination from multiple $B$ meson decay modes

Several methods exist to measure $CP$ violation observables related to the CKM unitarity triangle angle $\gamma$ using $B$ meson decays. These observables are different for every $B$ meson decay considered, although the information they contain on $\gamma$ is encoded in a similar way for all of them. This paper describes a strategy for a simultaneous measurement of $\gamma$ using several $B$ meson decays that takes into account possible correlations between them. Sensitivity studies demonstrate that the simultaneous analysis of several $B$ meson decay modes results in smaller uncertainties and improved statistical behaviour compared to a combination of standalone measurements.

Design and performance of the LHCb trigger and full real-time reconstruction in Run 2 of the LHC

The LHCb collaboration has redesigned its trigger to enable the full offline detector reconstruction to be performed in real time. Together with the real-time alignment and calibration of the detector, and a software infrastructure to make persistent the high-level physics objects produced during real-time processing, this redesign enabled the widespread deployment of real-time analysis during Run 2. We describe the design of the Run 2 trigger and real-time reconstruction, and present data-driven performance measurements for a representative sample of LHCb's physics programme.

HFLAV input to the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The Heavy Flavor Averaging Group provides with this document input to the European Strategy for Particle Physics. Research in heavy-flavor physics is an essential component of the particle-physics program, both within and beyond the Standard Model. To fully realize the potential of the field, we believe the strategy should include strong support for the ongoing experimental and theoretical heavy-flavor research, future upgrades of existing facilities, and significant heavy-flavor capabilities at future colliders, including dedicated experiments.

This article reports world averages of measurements of $b$-hadron, $c$-hadron, and $\tau$-lepton properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group using results available through summer 2016. For the averaging, common input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and known correlations are taken into account. The averages include branching fractions, lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, \CP~violation parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays and CKM matrix elements.

Handling uncertainties in background shapes: the discrete profiling method

A common problem in data analysis is that the functional form, as well as the parameter values, of the underlying model which should describe a dataset is not known a priori. In these cases some extra uncertainty must be assigned to the extracted parameters of interest due to lack of exact knowledge of the functional form of the model. A method for assigning an appropriate error is presented. The method is based on considering the choice of functional form as a discrete nuisance parameter which is profiled in an analogous way to continuous nuisance parameters. The bias and coverage of this method are shown to be good when applied to a realistic example.
