Enhancing the electron mobility via delta-doping in SrTiO3

We fabricated high-mobility δ-doped structures in SrTiO3 thin films in order to investigate the low temperature electronic transport properties of confined carriers in this system. An enhancement of the electron mobility above the bulk value was observed as the doped layer thickness decreased. High-field Hall measurements revealed that this mobility enhancement originates from higher-mobility electrons in the undoped clean regions, which have quantum-mechanically broadened from the doped layer. Because of the absence of apparent lattice misfit between the layers, this structure is highly suitable for investigating two-dimensional electron gases in SrTiO3.

Precise Black Hole Masses From Megamaser Disks: Black Hole-Bulge Relations at Low Mass

The black hole (BH)-bulge correlations have greatly influenced the last decade of effort to understand galaxy evolution. Current knowledge of these correlations is limited predominantly to high BH masses (M_BH> 10^8 M_sun) that can be measured using direct stellar, gas, and maser kinematics. These objects, however, do not represent the demographics of more typical L< L* galaxies. This study transcends prior limitations to probe BHs that are an order of magnitude lower in mass, using BH mass measurements derived from the dynamics of H_2O megamasers in circumnuclear disks. The masers trace the Keplerian rotation of circumnuclear molecular disks starting at radii of a few tenths of a pc from the central BH. Modeling of the rotation curves, presented by Kuo et al. (2010), yields BH masses with exquisite precision. We present stellar velocity dispersion measurements for a sample of nine megamaser disk galaxies based on long-slit observations using the B&C spectrograph on the Dupont telescope and the DIS spectrograph on the 3.5m telescope at Apache Point. We also perform bulge-to-disk decomposition of a subset of five of these galaxies with SDSS imaging. The maser galaxies as a group fall below the M_BH-sigma* relation defined by elliptical galaxies. We show, now with very precise BH mass measurements, that the low-scatter power-law relation between M_BH and sigma* seen in elliptical galaxies is not universal. The elliptical galaxy M_BH-sigma* relation cannot be used to derive the BH mass function at low mass or the zeropoint for active BH masses. The processes (perhaps BH self-regulation or minor merging) that operate at higher mass have not effectively established an M_BH-sigma* relation in this low-mass regime.

Mapping the magneto-structural quantum phases of Mn3O4

We present temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction and temperature- and field-dependent Raman scattering studies of single crystal Mn3O4, which reveal the novel magnetostructural phases that evolve in the spinels due to the interplay between strong spin-orbital coupling, geometric frustration, and applied magnetic field. We observe a structural transition from tetragonal to monoclinic structures at the commensurate magnetic transition at T2=33K, show that the onset and nature of this structural transition can be controlled with an applied magnetic field, and find evidence for a field-tuned quantum phase transition to a tetragonal incommensurate or spin glass phase.

Dominant mobility modulation by the electric field effect at the LaAlO_3 / SrTiO_3 interface

Caviglia et al. [Nature (London) 456, 624 (2008)] have found that the superconducting LaAlO_3 / SrTiO_3 interface can be gate modulated. A central issue is to determine the principal effect of the applied electric field. Using magnetotransport studies of a gated structure, we find that the mobility variation is almost five times as large as the sheet carrier density. Furthermore, superconductivity can be suppressed at both positive and negative gate bias. These results indicate that the relative disorder strength strongly increases across the superconductor-insulator transition.

A Full Year's Chandra Exposure on SDSS Quasars from the Chandra Multiwavelength Project

We study the spectral energy distributions and evolution of a large sample of optically selected quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) that were observed in 323 Chandra images analyzed by the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP). Our highest-confidence matched sample includes 1135 X-ray detected quasars in the redshift range 0.2 3 QSOs detected, we find no evidence for evolution out to z~5 for either the X-ray photon index Gamma or for the ratio of optical/UV to X-ray flux alpha_ox. About 10% of detected QSOs are obscured (Nh>1E22), but the fraction might reach ~1/3 if most non-detections are absorbed. We confirm a significant correlation between alpha_ox and optical luminosity, but it flattens or disappears for fainter AGN alone. Gamma hardens significantly both towards higher X-ray luminosity, and for relatively X-ray loud quasars. These trends may represent a relative increase in non-thermal X-ray emission, and our findings thereby strengthen analogies between Galactic black hole binaries and AGN.

The Luminosity Function of X-ray Selected Active Galactic Nuclei: Evolution of Supermassive Black Holes at High Redshift

We present a measure of the hard (2-8 keV) X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of Active Galactic Nuclei up to z~5. At high redshifts, the wide area coverage of the Chandra Multiwavength Project is crucial to detect rare and luminous (Lx > 10^44 erg s^-1) AGN. The inclusion of samples from deeper published surveys, such as the Chandra Deep Fields, allows us to span the lower Lx range of the XLF. Our sample is selected from both the hard (z < 3; f(2-8 keV) > 6.3x10^-16 erg cm^-2 s^-1) and soft (z > 3; f(0.5-2.0 keV) > 1.0x10^-16 erg cm^-2 s^-1) energy band detections. Within our optical magnitude limits (r',i' < 24), we achieve an adequate level of completeness (>50%) regarding X-ray source identification (i.e., redshift). We find that the luminosity function is similar to that found in previous X-ray surveys up to z~3 with an evolution dependent upon both luminosity and redshift. At z > 3, there is a significant decline in the numbers of AGN with an evolution rate similar to that found by studies of optically-selected QSOs. Based on our XLF, we assess the resolved fraction of the Cosmic X-ray Background, the cumulative mass density of Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs), and the comparison of the mean accretion rate onto SMBHs and the star formation history of galaxies as a function of redshift. A coevolution scenario up to z~2 is plausible though at higher redshifts the accretion rate onto SMBHs drops more rapidly. Finally, we highlight the need for better statistics of high redshift AGN at z > 3, which is achievable with the upcoming Chandra surveys.

Raman scattering studies of temperature- and field-induced melting of charge order in (La,Pr,Ca)MnO$_{3}$

We present Raman scattering studies of the structural and magnetic phases that accompany temperature- and field-dependent melting of charge- and orbital-order (COO) in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3. Our results show that thermal and field-induced COO melting in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 exhibits three stages in a heterogeneous melting process associated with a structural change: a long-range, strongly JT distorted/COO regime; a coexistence regime; and weakly JT distorted/PM or FM phase. We provide a complete structural phase diagram of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 for the temperature and field ranges 6<=T<=170 K and 0<=H<=9 T. We also investigate thermal and field-induced melting in La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3 to elucidate the role of disorder in melting of COO. We find that while thermal melting of COO in La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3 is quite similar to that in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3, the field-induced transition from the COO phase to the weakly JT-distorted/FM phase in La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3 is very abrupt, and occurs at significantly lower fields (H~2 T at T~0 K) than in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (H~30 T at T=0 K). Moreover, the critical field H_c increases with increasing temperature in La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3 in contrast to La0.5Ca0.5MnO3. To explain these differences, we propose that field-induced melting of COO in La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3 is best described as the field-induced percolation of FM domains, and we suggest that Griffiths phase physics may be an appropriate theoretical model for describing the unusual temperature- and field- dependent transitions observed in La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3.

Quantum and classical mode softening near the charge-density-wave/superconductor transition of Cu$_{x}$TiSe$_{2}$: Raman spectroscopic studies

Temperature- and x-dependent Raman scattering studies of the charge density wave (CDW) amplitude modes in CuxTiSe2 show that the amplitude mode frequency omega_o exhibits identical power-law scaling with the reduced temperature, T/T_CDW, and the reduced Cu content, x/x_c, i.e., omega_o ~ (1 - p)^0.15 for p = T/T_CDW or x/x_c, suggesting that mode softening is independent of the control parameter used to approach the CDW transition. We provide evidence that x-dependent mode softening in CuxTiSe2 is caused by the reduction of the electron-phonon coupling constant lambda due to expansion of the lattice, and that x-dependent `quantum' (T ~ 0) mode softening reveals a quantum critical point within the superconductor phase of CuxTiSe2.

Optical and magneto-optical properties of ferromagnetic full-Heusler films: experiments and first-principles calculations

We report a joint theoretical and experimental study focused on understanding the optical and magneto-optical properties of Co-based full-Heusler compounds. We show that magneto-optical spectra calculated within ab-initio density functional theory are able to uniquely identify the features of the experimental spectra in terms of spin resolved electronic transitions. As expected for 3d-based magnets, we find that the largest Kerr rotation for these alloys is of the order of 0.3o in polar geometry. In addition, we demonstrate that (i) multilayered structures have to be carefully handled in the theoretical calculations in order to improve the agreement with experiments, and (ii) combined theoretical and experimental investigations constitute a powerful approach to designing new materials for magneto-optical and spin-related applications

Chandra Multiwavelength Project: Normal Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift

(abridged) We have investigated 136 Chandra extragalactic sources without broad optical emission lines, including 93 galaxies with narrow emission lines (NELG) and 43 with only absorption lines (ALG). Based on fx/fo, Lx, X-ray spectral hardness and optical emission line diagnostics, we have conservatively classified 36 normal galaxies (20 spirals and 16 ellipticals) and 71 AGNs. We found no statistically significant evolution in Lx/LB, within the limited z range. We have built log(N)-log(S), after correcting for completeness based on a series of simulations. The best-fit slope is -1.5 for both S and B energy bands, which is considerably steeper than that of the AGN-dominated cosmic background sources, but slightly flatter than the previous estimate, indicating normal galaxies will not exceed the AGN population until fx ~ 2 x 10-18 erg s-1 cm-2 (a factor of ~5 lower than the previous estimate). A group of NELGs appear to be heavily obscured in X-rays, i.e., a typical type 2 AGN. After correcting for intrinsic absorption, their X-ray luminosities could be Lx > 10^44 erg s-1, making them type 2 quasar candidates. While most X-ray luminous ALGs (XBONG - X-ray bright, optically normal galaxy candidates) do not appear to be significantly absorbed, we found two heavily obscured objects, which could be as luminous as an unobscured broad-line quasar. Among 43 ALGs, we found two E+A galaxy candidates with strong Balmer absorption lines, but no [OII] line. The X-ray spectra of both galaxies are soft and one of them has a nearby close companion galaxy, supporting the merger/interaction scenario rather than the dusty starburst hypothesis.

ChaMP Serendipitous Galaxy Cluster Survey

We present a survey of serendipitous extended X-ray sources and optical cluster candidates from the Chandra Multi-wavelength Project (ChaMP). Our main goal is to make an unbiased comparison of X-ray and optical cluster detection methods. In 130 archival Chandra pointings covering 13 square degrees, we use a wavelet decomposition technique to detect 55 extended sources, of which 6 are nearby single galaxies. Our X-ray cluster catalog reaches a typical flux limit of about ~10^-14 erg s^-1 cm^-2, with a median cluster core radius of 21 arcsec. For 56 of the 130 X-ray fields, we use the ChaMP's deep NOAO/4m MOSAIC g, r, and i imaging to independently detect cluster candidates using a Voronoi tessellation and percolation (VTP) method. Red-sequence filtering decreases the galaxy fore/background contamination and provides photometric redshifts to z~0.7. From the overlapping 6.1 square degree X-ray/optical imaging, we find 115 optical clusters (of which 11% are in the X-ray catalog) and 28 X-ray clusters (of which 46% are in the optical VTP catalog). The median redshift of the 13 X-ray/optical clusters is 0.41, and their median X-ray luminosity (0.5-2 keV) is L_X=(2.65\pm0.19)x10^43 ergs s^-1. The clusters in our sample that are only detected in our optical data are poorer on average (~4sigma) than the X-ray/optically matched clusters, which may partially explain the difference in the detection fractions.

Field- and pressure-induced phases in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$: A spectroscopic investigation

We have investigated the magnetic-field- and pressure-induced structural and magnetic phases of the triple-layer ruthenate - Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$. Magnetic-field-induced changes in the phonon spectra reveal dramatic spin-reorientation transitions and strong magneto-elastic coupling in this material. Additionally, pressure-dependent Raman measurements at different temperatures reveal an anomalous negative Gruneisen-parameter associated with the B$_{1g}$ mode ($\sim$ 380 cm$^{-1}$) at low temperatures (T $<$ 75K), which can be explained consistently with the field dependent Raman data.

Extending the X-ray luminosity function of AGN to high redshift

X-ray surveys of the extragalactic universe are now able to detect significant numbers of AGN out to high redshift (z~5). We highlight some results from the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) to measure the X-ray luminosity function out to these early epochs. At z > 3, we show that the comoving space density of luminous (log Lx > 44.5) AGN has a behavior similar to the optical QSO luminosity function. With a newly compiled sample of AGN from ChaMP supplemented with those from additional surveys including the Chandra Deep fields, we present a preliminary measure of the luminosity function in the hard (2-8 keV) band. With 37 AGN at z > 3, we continue to see a decline in the space density at high redshift over a wider range in luminosity. We discuss the need to identify a larger sample of obscured AGN at high redshift to determine if an early epoch of hidden supermassive black hole growth occurred.

Magneto-optics in pure and defective Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs from first-principles

The magneto-optical properties of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As including their most common defects were investigated with precise first--principles density-functional FLAPW calculations in order to: {\em i}) elucidate the origin of the features in the Kerr spectra in terms of the underlying electronic structure; {\em ii}) perform an accurate comparison with experiments; and {\em iii}) understand the role of the Mn concentration and occupied sites in shaping the spectra. In the substitutional case, our results show that most of the features have an interband origin and are only slightly affected by Drude--like contributions, even at low photon energies. While not strongly affected by the Mn concentration for the intermediately diluted range ($x\sim$ 10%), the Kerr factor shows a marked minimum (up to 1.5$^o$) occurring at a photon energy of $\sim$ 0.5 eV. For interstitial Mn, the calculated results bear a striking resemblance to the experimental spectra, pointing to the comparison between simulated and experimental Kerr angles as a valid tool to distinguish different defects in the diluted magnetic semiconductors framework.

Co-moving space density of X-ray-selected Active Galactic Nuclei

For measurement of the AGN luminosity function and its evolution, X-ray selection samples all types of AGN and provides reduced obscuration bias in comparison with UV-excess or optical surveys. The apparent decline in optically-selected quasars above z~3 may be strongly affected by such a bias. The Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) is characterizing serendipitously detected X-ray sources in a large number of fields with archival Chandra imaging. We present a preliminary measure of the co-moving space density using a sample of 311 AGN found in 23 ChaMP fields (~1.8 deg^2) supplemented with 57 X-ray bright AGN from the CDF-N and CDF-S. Within our X-ray flux (f(0.3-8.0 keV) > 4x10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1) and optical magnitude (r' < 22.5) limits, our sample includes 14 broad emission line AGN at z > 3. Using this X-ray selected sample, we detect a turnover in the co-moving space density of luminous type 1 AGN (log Lx > 44.5; units erg s^-1; measured in the 0.3-8.0 keV band and corrected for Galactic absorption) at z > 2.5. Our X-ray sample is the first to show a behavior similar to the well established evolution of the optical quasar luminosity function. A larger sample of high redshift AGN and with a greater fraction of identified sources, either spectroscopic or photometric, at faint optical magnitudes (r' > 22.5) are required to remove the remaining uncertainty in our measure of the X-ray luminosity function. We confirm that for z < 1, lower luminosity AGN (log Lx < 44.5) are more prevalent by more than an order of magnitude than those with high luminosity. We have combined the Chandra sample with AGN from the ROSAT surveys to present a measure of the space density of luminous type 1 AGN in the soft X-ray band (0.5-2.0 keV) which confirms the broad band turnover described above.

Data Acquisition and Database Management System for Samsung Superconductor Test Facility

In order to fulfill the test requirement of KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) superconducting magnet system, a large scale superconducting magnet and conductor test facility, SSTF (Samsung Superconductor Test Facility), has been constructed at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. The computer system for SSTF DAC (Data Acquisition and Control) is based on UNIX system and VxWorks is used for the real-time OS of the VME system. EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) is used for the communication between IOC server and client. A database program has been developed for the efficient management of measured data and a Linux workstation with PENTIUM-4 CPU is used for the database server. In this paper, the current status of SSTF DAC system, the database management system and recent test results are presented.

Timescale Stretch Parameterization of Type Ia Supernova B-band Light Curves

R-band intensity measurements along the light curve of Type Ia supernovae discovered by the Supernova Cosmology Project (SCP) are fitted in brightness to templates allowing a free parameter the time-axis width factor w = s(1+z). The data points are then individually aligned in the time-axis, normalized and K-corrected back to the rest frame, after which the nearly 1300 normalized intensity measurements are found to lie on a well-determined common rest-frame B-band curve which we call the ``composite curve''. The same procedure is applied to 18 low-redshift Calan/Tololo SNe with z < 0.11; these nearly 300 B-band photometry points are found to lie on the composite curve equally well. The SCP search technique produces several measurements before maximum light for each supernova. We demonstrate that the linear stretch factor, s, which parameterizes the light-curve timescale appears independent of z,and applies equally well to the declining and rising parts of the light curve. In fact, the B-band template that best fits this composite curve fits the individual supernova photometry data when stretched by a factor s with chi^2/DoF approx = 1, thus as well as any parameterization can, given the current data sets. The measurement of the date of explosion, however, is model dependent and not tightly constrained by the current data. We also demonstrate the 1+z light-curve time-axis broadening expected from cosmological expansion. This argues strongly against alternative explanations, such as tired light, for the redshift of distant objects.

Scheduled Discoveries of 7+ High-Redshift Supernovae: First Cosmology Results and Bounds on q_0

Our search for high-redshift Type Ia supernovae discovered, in its first years, a sample of seven supernovae. Using a "batch" search strategy, almost all were discovered before maximum light and were observed over the peak of their light curves. The spectra and light curves indicate that almost all were Type Ia supernovae at redshifts z = 0.35 -- 0.5. These high-redshift supernovae can provide a distance indicator and "standard clock" to study the cosmological parameters q_0, Lambda, Omega_0, and H_0. This presentation and the following presentations of Kim et al. (1996), Goldhaber et al. (1996), and Pain et al. (1996) will discuss observation strategies and rates, analysis and calibration issues, the sources of measurement uncertainty, and the cosmological implications, including bounds on q_0, of these first high-redshift supernovae from our ongoing search.
