Measurement of the atmospheric muon charge ratio with the OPERA detector

The OPERA detector at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV energy region. We analyzed 403069 atmospheric muons corresponding to 113.4 days of livetime during the 2008 CNGS run. We computed separately the muon charge ratio for single and for multiple muon events in order to select different energy regions of the primary cosmic ray spectrum and to test the charge ratio dependence on the primary composition. The measured charge ratio values were corrected taking into account the charge-misidentification errors. Data have also been grouped in five bins of the "vertical surface energy". A fit to a simplified model of muon production in the atmosphere allowed the determination of the pion and kaon charge ratios weighted by the cosmic ray energy spectrum.

Second order numerical scheme for motion of polygonal curves with constant area speed

We study polygonal analogues of several moving boundary problems and their time discretization which preserves the constant area speed property. We establish various polygonal analogues of geometric formulas for moving boundaries and make use of the geometric formulas for our numerical scheme and its analysis of general constant area speed motion of polygons. Accuracy and efficiency of our numerical scheme are checked through numerical simulations for several polygonal motions such as motion by curvature and area-preserving advected flow etc.

Application of a curvature adjusted method in image segmentation

This article deals with flow of plane curves driven by the curvature and external force. We make use of such a geometric flow for the purpose of image segmentation. A parametric model for evolving curves with uniform and curvature adjusted redistribution of grid points will be described and compared.

Management of localized energy in discrete nonlinear transmission lines

The manipulation of locked intrinsic localized modes/discrete breathers is studied experimentally in nonlinear electric transmission line arrays. Introducing a static lattice impurity in the form of a capacitor, resistor or inductor has been used both to seed or destroy and attract or repel these localized excitations. In a nonlinear di-element array counter propagating short electrical pulses traveling in the acoustic branch are used to generate a stationary intrinsic localized mode in the optic branch at any particular lattice site. By changing the pulse polarity the same localized excitation can be eliminated demonstrating that the dynamical impurity associated with the propagating electrical pulse in the acoustic branch can trigger optical localized mode behavior.

Alpha Cluster Structure and Exotic States in a Self-Consistent Model for Light Nuclei

In this paper we examine to what extent traces of alpha-clustering can be found in mean-field ground states of $nα$-nuclei from Be8 through Ar36 as well as in some superdeformed states in S32, Ar36, and Ca40. For this purpose we calculate the overlap of the mean-field Slater determinant with one containg pure Gaussians and perfect spin and isospin symmetry, optimizing the overlap by varying the alpha-particle positions and radii. In some cases a coherent sum over different configurations is also employed. We find quite large overlaps for some of the lighter systems that diminish for nuclei above Ne20 but again strong clustering in Ar36.

Superdeformation and clustering in $^{40}$Ca studied with Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics

Deformed states in $^{40}$Ca are investigated with a method of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. Above the spherical ground state, rotational bands arise from a normal deformation and a superdeformation as well as an oblate deformation. The calculated energy spectra and $E2$ transition strengths in the superdeformed band reasonably agree to the experimental data of the superdeformed band starting from the $0^+_3$ state at 5.213 MeV. By the analysis of single-particle orbits, it is found that the superdeformed state has particle-hole nature of an $8p$-$8h$ configuration. One of new findings is parity asymmetric structure with $^{12}$C+$^{28}$Si-like clustering in the superdeformed band. We predict that $^{12}$C+$^{28}$Si molecular bands may be built above the superdeformed band due to the excitation of inter-cluster motion. They are considered to be higher nodal states of the superdeformed state. We also suggest negative-parity bands caused by the parity asymmetric deformation.

Dipole resonances in light neutron-rich nuclei studied with time-dependent calculations of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics

In order to study isovector dipole response of neutron-rich nuclei, we have applied a time-dependent method of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. The dipole resonances in Be, B and C isotopes have been investigated. In $^{10}$Be, $^{15}$B, $^{16}$C, collective modes of the vibration between a core and valence neutrons cause soft resonances at the excitation energy $E_x=10-15$ MeV below the giant dipole resonance(GDR). In $^{16}$C, we found that a remarkable peak at $E_x=14$ MeV corresponds to coherent motion of four valence neutrons against a $^{12}$C core, while the GDR arises from the core vibration in the $E_x >20$ MeV region. In $^{17}$B and $^{18}$C, the dipole strengths in the low energy region decline compared with those in $^{15}$B and $^{16}$C. We also discuss the energy weighted sum rule for the $E1$ transitions.

Cluster structure in stable and unstable nuclei

Cluster structure in stable and unstable nuclei has been studied. We report recent developments of theoretical studies on cluster aspect, which is essential for structure study of light unstable nuclei. We discuss negative parity bands in even-even Be and Ne isotopes and show the importance of cluster aspect. Three-body cluster structure and cluster crystallization are also introduced. It was found that the coexistence of cluster and mean-field aspect brings a variety of structures to unstable nuclei.

FeII/MgII Emission Line Ratios of QSOs. II. z>6 Objects

Near-infrared spectra of four QSOs located at $z>6$ are obtained with the OH-airglow suppressor mounted on the Subaru telescope. The FeII/MgII emission-line ratios of these QSOs are examined by the same fitting algorithm as in our previous study of $z<5.3$ QSOs. The fitting results show that two out of the four $z>6$ QSOs have significant FeII emission in their rest-UV spectra, while the other two have almost no FeII features. We also applied our fitting algorithm to more than 10,000 SDSS QSOs and found two trends in the distribution of FeII/MgII against redshift: (1) the upper envelope of the FeII/MgII distribution at $z>3$ shows a probable declination toward high redshift, and (2) the median distribution settles into lower ratios at $z\sim 1.5$ with small scatter compared to the other redshift. We discuss an Fe/Mg abundance evolution of QSOs with a substantial contribution from the diverse nature of the broad-line regions in high-redshift QSOs.

Deformed Base Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics and its Application to ^{20}Ne

A new theoretical framework named as deformed base antisymmetrized molecular dynamics that uses the localized triaxially deformed Gaussian as the single particle wave packet is presented. The model space enables us to describe sufficiently well the deformed mean-field structure as well as the cluster structure and their mixed structure within the same framework. The improvement over the original version of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics which uses the spherical Gaussian is verified by the application to $^{20}{\rm Ne}$ nucleus. The almost pure $α+ ^{16}{\rm O_{g.s}}$ cluster structure of the $K^π$=$0^-$ band, the distortion of the cluster structure in the $K^π$=$0^+_1$ band and the dominance of the deformed mean-field structure of the $K^π$=$2^-$ band are confirmed and their observed properties are reproduced. Especially, the intra-band E2 transition probabilities in $K^π$=$0^+_1$ and $2^-$ bands are reproduced without any effective charge. Since it has been long known that the pure $α+ ^{16}{\rm O}_{g.s.}$ cluster model underestimates the intra-band $E2$ transitions in the $K^π$=$0^+_1$ band by about 30%, we consider that this success is due to the sufficient description of the deformed mean-field structure in addition to the cluster structure by the present framework. From the successful description of $^{20}{\rm Ne}$, we expect that the present framework presents us with a powerful approach for the study of the coexistence and interplay of the mean-field structure and the cluster structure.

Subaru Deep Survey VI. A Census of Lyman Break Galaxies at z=4 and 5 in the Subaru Deep Fields: Clustering Properties

We investigate the clustering properties of 2,600 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z=3.5-5.2 in two large blank fields, the Subaru Deep Field and the Subaru/XMM Deep Field (600arcmin^2 each). The angular correlation functions of these LBGs show a clear clustering at both z~4 and 5. The correlation lengths are r_0= 4.1^{+0.2}_{-0.2} and 5.9^{+1.3}_{-1.7} h_{100}^{-1} Mpc (r_0= 5.1^{+1.0}_{-1.1} and 5.9^{+1.3}_{-1.7} h_{100}^{-1} Mpc) for all the detected LBGs (for L>L* LBGs) at z~4 and 5, respectively. These correlation lengths correspond to galaxy-dark matter biases of b_g= 2.9^{+0.1}_{-0.1} and 4.6^{+0.9}_{-1.2} (b_g=3.5^{+0.6}_{-0.7} and 4.6^{+0.9}_{-1.2}), for all the detected LBGs (for L>L^* LBGs) at z~4 and 5, respectively. These results, combined with estimates for z~3 LBGs in the literature, show that the correlation length of L>L^* LBGs is almost constant, ~5 h_{100}^{-1} Mpc, over z~3-5, while the bias monotonically increases with redshift at z>3. We also find that for LBGs at z~4 the clustering amplitude increases with UV-continuum luminosity and with the amount of dust extinction. We estimate the mass of dark halos hosting various kinds of high-z galaxies including LBGs with the analytic model given by Sheth & Tormen (1999). We find that the typical mass of dark halos hosting L>L^* LBGs is about 1x10^{12} h_{70}^{-1}Msol over z~3-5, which is comparable to that of the Milky Way Galaxy. A single dark halo with ~10^{12} h_{70}^{-1} Msol is found to host 0.1-0.3 LBG on average but host about four K-band selected galaxies.

Subaru Deep Survey V. A Census of Lyman Break Galaxies at z=4 and 5 in the Subaru Deep Fields: Photometric Properties

(abridged) We investigate photometric properties of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z=3.5-5.2 based on large samples of 2,600 LBGs detected in deep (i'~27) and wide-field (1,200 arcmin^2) images taken in the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) and the Subaru/XMM Deep Field (SXDF). The selection criteria for the LBG samples are examined with 85 spectroscopically identified objects and by Monte Carlo simulations. We find in the luminosity functions of LBGs (i) that the number density of bright galaxies (M_{1700}<-22; corresponding to SFR_{corr}>100 Msolar yr^{-1}) decreases significantly from z=4 to 5 and (ii) that the faint-end slope of the luminosity function may become steeper towards higher redshifts. We estimate dust extinction of z=4 LBGs with M ~0.13.

Clustering in stable and unstable nuclei in $p$-shell and $sd$-shell regions

According to microscopic calculations with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics, we studied cluster features in stable and unstable nuclei. A variety of structure was found in stable and unstable nuclei in the $p$-shell and $sd$-shell regions. The structure of excited states of $^{12}$Be was investigated, while in $sd$-shell nuclei we focused on molecular states and deformed states. The deformed states in $^{28}$Si and $^{40}$Ca were discussed in connection with the high-lying molecular states. Appealing molecular states in $^{36}$Ar and $^{24}$Mg were suggested. The results signified that both clustering of nucleons and mean-field formation are essential features in $sd$-shell nuclei as well as $p$-shell nuclei.

$^{16}{\rm O} + ^{16}{\rm O}$ nature of the superdeformed band of $^{32}{\rm S}$ and the evolution of the molecular structure

The relation between the superdeformed band of $^{32}{\rm S}$ and $^{16}{\rm O} + ^{16}{\rm O}$ molecular bands is studied by the deformed-base antisymmetrized molecular dynamics with the Gogny D1S force. It is found that the obtained superdeformed band members of $^{32}{\rm S}$ have considerable amount of the $^{16}{\rm O} + ^{16}{\rm O}$ component. Above the superdeformed band, we have obtained two excited rotational bands which have more prominent character of the $^{16}{\rm O} + ^{16}{\rm O}$ molecular band. These three rotational bands are regarded as a series of $^{16}{\rm O} + ^{16}{\rm O}$ molecular bands which were predicted by using the unique $^{16}{\rm O}$ -$^{16}{\rm O}$ optical potentil. As the excitation energy and principal quantum number of the relative motion increase, the $^{16}{\rm O} + ^{16}{\rm O}$ cluster structure becomes more prominent but at the same time, the band members are fragmented into several states.

Subaru Deep Spectroscopy of the Very Extended Emission-Line Region of NGC 4388: Ram Pressure Stripped Gas Ionized by the Nuclear Radiation

We report here the results of deep optical spectroscopy of the very extended emission-line region (VEELR) found serendipitously around the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388 in the Virgo cluster using the Subaru Telescope. The H-alpha recession velocities of most of the filaments of the region observed are highly blue-shifted with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The velocity field is complicated, and from the kinematic and morphological points of view, there seem to be several streams of filaments: low velocity (v = -100 km/s) filaments, high velocity (v = -300 km/s) filaments, and a very high velocity (v > -500 km/s) cloud complex. The emission-line ratios of the VEELR filaments are well explained by power-law photoionization models with solar abundances, suggesting that the Seyfert nucleus of NGC 4388 is the dominant ionization source of the VEELR and that the VEELR gas has moderate metallicity. In addition to photoionization, shock heating probably contributes to the ionization of the gas. In particular, the filaments outside the ionization cone of the Seyfert nucleus are mainly excited by shocks. We conclude that the VEELR was formerly the disk gas of NGC 4388, which has been stripped by ram pressure due to the interaction between the hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) and the galaxy. The velocity field and the morphology of the VEELR closely resemble snapshots from some numerical simulations of this process. In the case of NGC 4388, the ram pressure-stripped gas, which is normally seen as extended HI filaments, happens to be exposed and ionized by the radiation from the AGN, and so can be seen as optical emission-line gas.

Infrared Spectroscopy of 15 Radio Galaxies at 2<z<2.6

Near-infrared spectra of 15 high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) located at $2<z<2.6$ were obtained by the OH Airglow Suppressor spectrograph mounted on the Subaru telescope. The UV-optical line ratio diagnostic diagrams indicate that half of the observed HzRGs have extended emission-line regions with low metal abundance, photoionized by a flat-continuum active galactic nucleus such as a quasar. We also found two probable correlations between radio and rest-optical parameters: (1) HzRGs with massive hosts tend to have a redder rest-optical continuum, and (2) HzRGs with smaller radio sizes also show a redder optical continuum. On the basis of the correlations, the nature of HzRGs at $2<z<2.6$ is discussed.

Cosmic shear statistics in the Suprime-Cam 2.1 sq deg field: Constraints on Omega_m and sigma_8

We present measurements of the cosmic shear correlation in the shapes of galaxies in the Suprime-Cam 2.1 deg^2 R_c-band imaging data. As an estimator of the shear correlation originated from the gravitational lensing, we adopt the aperture mass variance. We detect a non-zero E mode variance on scales between 2 and 40arcmin. We also detect a small but non-zero B mode variance on scales larger than 5arcmin. We compare the measured E mode variance to the model predictions in CDM cosmologies using maximum likelihood analysis. A four-dimensional space is explored, which examines sigma_8, Omega_m, Gamma and zs (a mean redshift of galaxies). We include three possible sources of error: statistical noise, the cosmic variance estimated using numerical experiments, and a residual systematic effect estimated from the B mode variance. We derive joint constraints on two parameters by marginalizing over the two remaining parameters. We obtain an upper limit of Gamma<0.5 for zs>0.9 (68% confidence). For a prior Gamma\in[0.1,0.4] and zs\in[0.6,1.4], we find sigma_8=(0.50_{-0.16}^{+0.35})Omega_m^{-0.37} for flat cosmologies and sigma_8=(0.51_{-0.16}^{+0.29})Omega_m^{-0.34}$ for open cosmologies (95% confidence). If we take the currently popular LCDM model, we obtain a one-dimensional confidence interval on sigma_8 for the 95.4% level, 0.62<σ_8<1.32 for zs\in[0.6,1.4]. Information on the redshift distribution of galaxies is key to obtaining a correct cosmological constraint. An independent constraint on Gamma from other observations is useful to tighten the constraint.

Subaru Deep Survey. IV. Discovery of a Large-Scale Structure at Redshift \simeq 5

We report the discovery of a large-scale structure of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) at z=4.86 based on wide-field imaging with the prime-focus camera (Suprime-Cam) on the Subaru telescope. We observed a 25' x 45' area of the Subaru Deep Field in a narrow band (NB, lambdaC=7126 A and FWHM=73 A) together with R and i'. We isolate from these data 43 LAE candidates down to NB=25.5 mag using color criteria. Follow-up spectroscopy of five candidates suggests the contamination by low-z objects to be ~ 20%. We find that the LAE candidates are clustered in an elongated region on the sky of 20 Mpc in width and 50 Mpc in length at z=4.86, which is comparable in size to present-day large-scale structures (we adopt H0=70 km/s/Mpc, Omega0=0.3, lambda0=0.7). This elongated region includes a circular region of 12 Mpc radius of higher surface overdensity (delta=2), which may be the progenitor of a cluster of galaxies. Assuming this circular region to be a sphere with a spatial overdensity of 2, we compare our observation with predictions by Cold Dark Matter models. We find that an Omega0=0.3 flat model with sigma8=0.9 predicts the number of such spheres consistent with the observed number (one sphere in our survey volume) if the bias parameter of LAEs is b \simeq 6. This value suggests that the typical mass of dark haloes hosting LAEs at z \simeq 5 is of the order of 10^12 Msolar. Such a large mass poses an interesting question about the nature of LAEs.
