Structure analysis of high-pressure phase for skyrmion-hosting multiferroic Cu2OSeO3

Cu2OSeO3 is known as a unique example of insulating multiferroic compounds with skyrmion spin texture, which is characterized by the chiral cubic crystal structure at ambient pressure. Recently, it has been reported that this compound shows pressure-induced structural transition with large enhancement of magnetic ordering temperature Tc. In the present study, we have investigated the detailed crystal structure in the high pressure phase, by combining the synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment with the diamond anvil cell and the analysis based on the genetic algorithm. Our results suggest that the original pyrochlore Cu network is sustained even after the structural transition, while the orientation of SeO3 molecule as well as the position of oxygen in the middle of Cu tetrahedra are significantly modified. The latter features may be the key for the reported enhancement of Tc and associated stabilization of skyrmion phase at room temperature.

Emergent topological spin structures in a centrosymmetric cubic perovskite

The skyrmion crystal (SkX) characterized by a multiple-q helical spin modulation has been reported as a unique topological state that competes with the single-q helimagnetic order in non-centrosymmetric materials. Here we report the discovery of a rich variety of multiple-q helimagnetic spin structures in the centrosymmetric cubic perovskite SrFeO3. On the basis of neutron diffraction measurements, we have identified two types of robust multiple-q topological spin structures that appear in the absence of external magnetic fields: an anisotropic double-q spin spiral and an isotropic quadruple-q spiral hosting a three-dimensional lattice of hedgehog singularities. The present system not only diversifies the family of SkX host materials, but furthermore provides an experimental missing link between centrosymmetric lattices and topological helimagnetic order. It also offers perspectives for integration of SkXs into oxide electronic devices.

Gamow-Teller strength for the analog transitions to the first T=1/2, J^pi=3/2- states in 13C and 13N and the implications for Type Ia supernovae

The Gamow-Teller strength for the transition from the ground state of 13C to the T=1/2, J^pi=3/2- excited state at 3.51 MeV in 13N is extracted via the 13C(3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV. In contrast to results from earlier (p,n) studies on 13C, a good agreement with shell-model calculations and the empirical unit cross section systematics from other nuclei is found. The results are used to study the analog 13N(e-,v_e)13C reaction, which plays a role in the pre-explosion convective phase of type Ia supernovae. Although the differences between the results from the (3He,t) and (p,n) data significantly affect the deduced electron-capture rate and the net heat-deposition in the star due to this transition, the overall effect on the pre-explosive evolution is small.

On the extraction of weak transition strengths via the (3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV

Differential cross sections for transitions of known weak strength were measured with the (3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV on targets of 12C, 13C, 18O, 26Mg, 58Ni, 60Ni, 90Zr, 118Sn, 120Sn and 208Pb. Using this data, it is shown the proportionalities between strengths and cross sections for this probe follow simple trends as a function of mass number. These trends can be used to confidently determine Gamow-Teller strength distributions in nuclei for which the proportionality cannot be calibrated via beta-decay strengths. Although theoretical calculations in distorted-wave Born approximation overestimate the data, they allow one to understand the main experimental features and to predict deviations from the simple trends observed in some of the transitions.

Molecular dynamics study on planar clustering of xenon in UO2

Interatomic potentials of uranium dioxide are investigated on their applicability to model structural stabilities beyond fluorite phase by comparing with ab-initio results. A high pressure cotunnite phase and loosely stacking virtual crystal are involved in order to get a primary confidence for large-scale deformation modelings of UO2 under irradiation damages. The behavior of Xe atoms in UO2 fuel is studied with molecular dynamics simulations. Besides the ground state bubble geometry, we find that a planar distribution is also (meta-) stable for xenon under thermodynamic perturbations. The Xe atoms with a planar configuration are in a liquid state at a typical reactor temperature of 1000 K, which presents a modulated layer-structure near the interface with solid UO2. A planar defects loop remains after these Xe atoms are released out.

Structural behavior of uranium dioxide under pressure by LSDA+U calculations

The structural behavior of UO2 under high pressure up to 300GPa has been studied by first-principles calculations with LSDA+U approximation. The results show that a pressure-induced structural transition to the cotunnite-type (orthorhombic Pnma) phase occurs at 38GPa. It agrees well with the experimentally observed ~42 GPa. An isostructural transition following that is also predicted to take place from 80 to 130GPa, which has not yet been observed in experiments. Further high compression beyond 226GPa will result in a metallic and paramagnetic transition. It corresponds to a volume of 90A^3 per cell, in good agreement with a previous theoretical analysis in the reduction of volume required to delocalize 5f states.

The (t,3He) and (3He,t) reactions as probes of Gamow-Teller strength

Charge-exchange reactions are an important tool for determining weak-interaction rates. They provide stringent tests for nuclear structure models necessary for modeling astrophysical environments such as neutron stars and core-collapse supernovae. In anticipation of (t,3He) experiments at 115 MeV/nucleon on nuclei of relevance (A~40-120) in the late evolution of stars, it is shown via a study of the 26Mg(t,3He) reaction that this probe is an accurate tool for extracting Gamow-Teller transition strengths. To do so, the data are complemented by results from the 26Mg(3He,t) reaction at 140 MeV/nucleon which allows for a comparison of T=2 analog states excited via the mirror reactions. Extracted Gamow-Teller strengths from 26Mg(t,3He) and 26Mg(3He,t) are compared with those from 26Mg(d,2He) and 26Mg(p,n) studies, respectively. A good correspondence is found, indicating probe-independence of the strength extraction. Furthermore, we test shell-model calculations using the new USD-05B interaction in the sd-model space and show that it reproduces the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distributions well. A second goal of this work is to improve the understanding of the (t,3He) and (3He,t) reaction mechanisms at intermediate energies since detailed studies are scarce. The Distorted-Wave Born Approximation is employed, taking into account the composite structures of the 3He and triton particles. The reaction model provides the means to explain systematic uncertainties at the 10-20% level in the extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths as being due to interference between Gamow-Teller dL=0, dS=1 and dL=2, dS=1 amplitudes that both contribute to transitions from 0+ to 1+ states.
