Compton scattering off massive fundamental bosons of pure spin 1

Relativistic particles with spins $J>0$ are described by means of multicomponent wave functions which transform covariantly according to Lorentz-group representations that contain at rest the spin of interest. The symmetry group of space-time provides not one but an infinity of such representations which are equivalent for free particles but yield different electromagnetic couplings upon gauging; thus the challenge is to develop criteria which allow us to select those of them which relate to physically detectable particles. We here take the position that the unitarity of the Compton scattering cross sections in the ultrarelativistic limit, when predicted by a consistent method for a spin-$1$ description, could provide such a criterion. We analyze the properties of massive fundamental spin-$1$ bosons transforming as antisymmetric tensors of second rank, $(1,0)\oplus(0,1)$. For this purpose, we employ the Poincaré covariant projector method, which provides consistent, causal, and representation specific Lagrangians. This formalism yields a twofold extension of the Proca Lagrangian for the description of spin-$1$ bosons, first from an in-built $g=1$ value of the gyromagnetic ratio to an unspecified $g\not=1$, and from, single-parity, to parity-doublet degrees of freedom. We find different results for Compton scattering in these theories and track the differences to the lack of universality of the vector-antisymmetric-tensor equivalence theorem which is specific only to Proca's framework, and valid for $g=1$, while it is violated within the covariant projector formalism. Our main result is that a finite Compton scattering differential cross section in the ultrarelativistic limit requires us to consider the contributions of both parities in $(1,0)\oplus(0,1)$. On that basis, we conclude that massive spin-$1$ bosons transforming as antisymmetric tensors are physical parity doublets.

Electromagnetic multipole moments of elementary spin-1/2, 1, and 3/2 particles

We study multipole decompositions of the electromagnetic currents of spin-1/2, 1, and 3/2 particles described in terms of Lagrangians designed to reproduce representation specific wave equations which are second order in the momenta and which emerge within the recently elaborated Poincaré covariant projector method. We calculate the electric multipoles of the above spins for the spinor, the four-vector, and the four-vector--spinor representations, attend to the most general non-Lagrangian spin-3/2 currents which are allowed by Lorentz invariance to be of third order in the momenta and construct the linear current equivalent of identical multipole moments of one of them. We conclude that such non-Lagrangian currents are not necessarily more general than the two-term currents emerging within the covariant projector method. We compare our results with those of the conventional Proca-, and Rarita-Schwinger frameworks. Finally, we test the representation dependence of the multipoles by placing spin-1 and spin-3/2 in the respective (1,0)$\oplus$(0,1), and (3/2,0)$\oplus$(0,3/2) single-spin representations. We observe representation independence of the charge monopoles and the magnetic dipoles, in contrast to the higher multipoles, which turn out to be representation dependent. In particular, we find the bi-vector $(1,0)\oplus (0,1)$ to be characterized by an electric quadrupole moment of opposite sign to the one found in $(1/2,1/2)$, and consequently, to the $W$ boson. Our finding points toward the possibility that the $ρ$ meson could transform as part of an antisymmetric tensor with an $a_{1}$ meson-like state as its representation companion.

Rotational symmetry and degeneracy: a cotangent-perturbed rigid rotator of unperturbed level multiplicity

We predict level degeneracy of the rotational type in diatomic molecules described by means of a cotangent-hindered rigid rotator. The problem is shown to be exactly solvable in terms of non-classical Romanovski polynomials. The energies of such a system are linear combinations of t(t+1) and 1/[t(t+1)+1/4] terms with the non-negative integer principal quantum number t=n+|/bar{m}| being the sum of the degree n of the polynomials and the absolute value, |/bar{m}|, of the square root of the separation constant between the polar and azimuthal motions. The latter obeys, with respect to t, the same branching rule, |/bar{m}|=0,1,..., t, as does the magnetic quantum number with respect to the angular momentum, l, and, in this fashion, the t quantum number presents itself indistinguishable from l. In effect, the spectrum of the hindered rotator has the same (2t+1)-fold level multiplicity as the unperturbed one. For small t values, the wave functions and excitation energies of the perturbed rotator differ from the ordinary spherical harmonics, and the l(l+1) law, respectively, while approaching them asymptotically with increasing t. In this fashion the breaking of the rotational symmetry at the level of the representation functions is opaqued by the level degeneracy. The model provides a tool for the description of rotational bands with anomalously large gaps between the ground state and its first excitation.

On the exact solubility in momentum space of the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential

The Schrodinger equation with the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential in flat three dimensional Euclidean space, E3, and its exact solutions are shown to be also exactly transformable to momentum space, though the resulting equation is purely algebraic and can not be cast into the canonical form of an integral Lippmann-Schwinger equation. This is because the cotangent function does not allow for an exact Fourier transform in E3. In addition we recall, that the above potential can be also viewed as an angular function of the second polar angle parametrizing the three dimensional spherical surface, S3, of a constant radius, in which case the cotangent function would allow for an exact integral transform to momentum space. On that basis, we obtain a momentum space Lippmann-Schwinger-type equation, though the corresponding wavefunctions have to be obtained numerically.

Manifestation of Conformal Symmetry in the Light Flavor Baryon Sector

On the AdS_5 cone, conformally compactified to R^1xS^3, a quark-diquark model of light flavor baryons is developed. The system on this manifold is decribed in terms of a scalar conformal equation, gauged by the field of a D3 brane whose transversal dimensions have been conformally warpped over R^1xS^3. Such a system does not result exactly conformally invariant because the gauge potential slightly modifies the conformal centrifugal barrier of the free geodesic motion. Thanks to this, the model describes the correct mass ordering in the P11-S11 pairs through the N spectrum as a combined effect of conformal symmetry breaking, on the one side, and a parity change of the diquark from a scalar at low masses, to a pseudoscalar at higher masses, on the other. We calculate the number of resonances with masses below 2500 MeV needed for the completeness of the above scheme and find a total of 32 "missing" nucleon and Delta states. Their absence or presence in the respective spectra relates to the degree to which conformal symmetry is realized in the lightest flavor sector. The scheme also allows for the prediction of the dressing function of an effective instantaneous gluon propagator from the Fourier transform of the gauge potential. We find a dressing function that is finite in the infrared and tends to zero at infinity.

Conformal symmetry and light flavor baryon spectra

The degeneracy among parity pairs systematically observed in the N and Delta spectra is interpreted to hint on a possible conformal symmetry realization in the light flavor baryon sector in line with AdS_5/CFT_4. The case is made by showing that all the observed N and Delta resonances with masses below 2500 MeV distribute fairly well each over the first levels of a unitary representation of the conformal group, a representation that covers the spectrum of a quark-diquark system, placed directly on the AdS_5 cone, conformally compactified to R^1*S^3. The free geodesic motion on the S^3 manifold is described by means of the scalar conformal equation there, which is of the Klein-Gordon type. The equation is then gauged by the "curved" Coulomb potential that has the form of a cotangent function. Conformal symmetry is not exact, this because the gauge potential slightly modifies the conformal centrifugal barrier of the free geodesic motion. Thanks to this, the degeneracy between P11-S11 pairs from same level is relaxed, while the remaining states belonging to same level remain practically degenerate. The model describes the correct mass ordering in the P11-S11 pairs through the nucleon spectrum as a combined effect of the above conformal symmetry breaking, on the one side, and a parity change of the diquark from a scalar at low masses, to a pseudoscalar at higher masses, on the other. The quality of the wave functions is illustrated by calculations of realistic mean-square charge radii and electric charge form-factors on the examples of the proton, and the protonic P11(1440), and S11(1535) resonances. The scheme also allows for a prediction of the dressing function of an effective instantaneous gluon propagator from the Fourier transform of the gauge potential. We find a dressing function that is finite in the infrared and tends to zero at infinity.

Trigonometrically extended Cornell potential and deconfinement

Non-perturbative methods of effective field theory such like Lattice QCD have allowed to establish connection between the QCD Lagrangian and quark potential models, a prominent outcome being the Cornell (linear plus Coulomb) potential. In being quite successful in explaining properties of heavy flavor hadrons, be them quarkonia or baryons, this potential has been found less spectacular in the description of the non-strange baryons, the nucleon and the Delta. This behavior indicates that the one-gluon exchange and the flux-tube interaction do not fully account for the complexity of the dynamics of three light quarks. Very recently, the Cornell potential which is of infinte range has been upgraded by us toward an exactly solvable trigonometric potential of finite range that interpolates between the inverse-distance potential and the infinite wells while passing through a region of linear growth, a reason for which it contains the inverse distance and the linear potentials as first terms in its Taylor series decomposition. We here first make the point that the upgraded Cornell potential can be viewed as the exact counterpart on a curved space to a flat space 1/r potential, a circumstance that equips it by two simultaneous symmetries, SO(4), and SO(2,1). These allow to place the trigonometric confinement potential in the context of AdS_5/CFT correspondence and thus to establish the link of the algebraic aspects of the latter to QCD potentiology. Next we report that the above potential when employed in the quark-diquark system, provides a remarkably adequate description of both nucleon and Delta spectra and the proton mean square charge radius as well, and moreover implies an intriguing venue toward quark deconfinement as shut-down of the curvature considered as temperature dependent.

Baryons from quarks in curved space and deconfinement

Detailed account is given of the fact that the Cornell potential predicted by Lattice QCD and its exactly solvable trigonometric extension recently reported by us can be viewed as the respective approximate and exact counterparts on a curved space to an 1/r flat space potential. The "curved" potential describes a confinement phenomenon because it is of infinite depth and has only bound states. It furthermore has the remarkable property of preserving both the SO(4) and SO(2,1) symmetries of the ordinary 1/r potential. We first make the case that this particular geometric version on confinement provides a remarkably adequate description of both nucleon and Delta spectra and the proton mean square charge radius as well, and suggests an intriguing venue toward quark deconfinement as shut-down of the curvature considered as temperature dependent. Next we observe that the SO(2,1) symmetry of the "curved" potential allows to place it within the context of AdS_5/CFT correspondence and to establish in this manner the algbraic link of the the latter to QCD potentiology.

The Real Exact Solutions to the Hyperbolic Scarf Potential

The exact solutions of the Schrodinger equation with the hyperbolic Scarf potential reported in the literature so far rely upon Jacobi polynomials with imaginary arguments and parameters. We here show that upon a suitable factorization these solutions can be expressed alternatively by means of real orthogonal polynomials distinct but the classical ones as they satisfy a new self-adjoint differential equation of the hypergeometric type.

Electromagnetic couplings of elementary vector particles

On the basis of the three fundamental principles of (i) Poincaré symmetry of space time, (ii) electromagnetic gauge symmetry, and (iii) unitarity, we construct an universal Lagrangian for the electromagnetic interactions of elementary vector particles, i.e., massive spin-1 particles transforming in the /1/2,1/2) representation space of the Homogeneous Lorentz Group (HLG). We make the point that the first two symmetries alone do not fix the electromagnetic couplings uniquely but solely prescribe a general Lagrangian depending on two free parameters, here denoted by ξand g. The first one defines the electric-dipole and the magnetic-quadrupole moments of the vector particle, while the second determines its magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole moments. In order to fix the parameters one needs an additional physical input suited for the implementation of the third principle. As such, one chooses Compton scattering off a vector target and requires the cross section to respect the unitarity bounds in the high energy limit. In result, we obtain the universal g=2, and ξ=0 values which completely characterize the electromagnetic couplings of the considered elementary vector field at tree level. The nature of this vector particle, Abelian versus non-Abelian, does not affect this structure. Merely, a partition of the g=2 value into non-Abelian, g_{na}, and Abelian, g_{a}=2-g_{na}, contributions occurs for non-Abelian fields with the size of g_{na} being determined by the specific non-Abelian group appearing in the theory of interest, be it the Standard Model or any other theory.

Trigonometric quark confinement potential of QCD traits

We make the case that the Coulomb- plus linear quark confinement potential predicted by lattice QCD is an approximation to the exactly solvable trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential that has the property to interpolate between the Coulomb- and the infinite wells. We test the predictive power of this potential in the description of the nucleon (considered as a quark-diquark system) and provide analytic expressions for its mass spectrum and the proton electric form factor. We compare the results obtained in this fashion to data and find quite good agreement. We obtain an effective gluon propagator in closed form as the Fourier transform of the potential under investigation.

Causal Propagation of Spin-Cascades

We gauge the direct product of the Proca with the Dirac equation that describes the coupling to the electromagnetic field of the spin-cascade (1/2,3/2) residing in the four-vector spinor and analyze propagation of its wave fronts in terms of the Courant-Hilbert criteria. We show that the differential equation under consideration is unconditionally hyperbolic and the propagation of its wave fronts unconditionally causal. In this way we proof that the irreducible spin-cascade embedded within four-vector is free from the Velo-Zwanziger problem that plagues the Rarita-Schwinger description of spin-3/2. The proof extends also to the direct product of two Proca equations and implies causal propagation of the spin-cascade (0,1,2) within an electromagnetic environment.

Romanovski polynomials in selected physics problems

We briefly review the five possible real polynomial solutions of hypergeometric differential equations. Three of them are the well known classical orthogonal polynomials, but the other two are different with respect to their orthogonality properties. We then focus on the family of polynomials which exhibits a finite orthogonality. This family, to be referred to as the Romanovski polynomials, is required in exact solutions of several physics problems ranging from quantum mechanics and quark physics to random matrix theory. It appears timely to draw attention to it by the present study. Our survey also includes several new observations on the orthogonality properties of the Romanovski polynomials and new developments from their Rodrigues formula.

Angular Momentum Dependent Quark Potential of QCD Traits and Dynamical O(4) Symmetry

A common quark potential that captures the essential traits of the QCD quark-gluon dynamics is expected to (i) interpolate between a Coulomb-like potential (associated with one-gluon exchange) and the infinite wall potential (associated with trapped but asymptotically free quarks), (ii) reproduce in the intermediary region the linear confinement potential (associated with multi-gluon self-interactions) as established by lattice QCD calculations of hadron properties. We first show that the exactly soluble trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential possesses all these properties. Next we observe that this potential, once interpreted as angular momentum dependent, acquires a dynamical O(4) symmetry and reproduces exactly quantum numbers and level splittings of the non-strange baryon spectra in the SU(2)_I* O(4) classification scheme according to which baryons cling on to multi-spin parity clusters of the type (K/2,K/2)*[(1/2,0) + (0, 1/2)], whose relativistic image is ψ_{μ_{1}...μ_{K}}. Finally, we bring exact energies and wave functions of the levels within the above potential and thus put it on equal algebraic footing with such common potentials of wide spread as are the harmonic-oscillator- and the Coulomb potentials.

The Quantum Mechanics Problem of the Schroedinger Equation with the Trigonometric Rosen-Morse Potential

We present the quantum mechanics problem of the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation with the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential. This potential is of possible interest to quark physics in so far as it captures the essentials of the QCD quark-gluon dynamics and (i) interpolates between a Coulomb-like potential (associated with one-gluon exchange) and the infinite wall potential (associated with asymptotic freedom), (ii) reproduces in the intermediary region the linear confinement potential (associated with multi-gluon self-interactions) as established by lattice QCD calculations of hadron properties. Moreover, its exact real solutions given here display a new class of real orthogonal polynomials and thereby interesting mathematical entities in their own.

The Trigonometric Rosen-Morse Potential in the Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics and its Exact Solutions

The analytic solutions of the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation for the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential reported in the literature rely upon the Jacobi polynomials with complex indices and complex arguments. We first draw attention to the fact that the complex Jacobi polynomials have non-trivial orthogonality properties which make them uncomfortable for physics applications. Instead we here solve above equation in terms of real orthogonal polynomials. The new solutions are used in the construction of the quantum-mechanic superpotential.

Beta decays with momentum space Majorana spinors

We construct and apply to beta decays a truly neutral local quantum field that is entirely based upon momentum space Majorana spinors. We make the observation that theory with momentum space Majorana spinors of real C parities is equivalent to Dirac's theory. For imaginary C parities, the neutrino mass can drop from the single beta decay trace and reappear in 0νββ, a curious and in principle experimentally testable signature for a non-trivial impact of Majorana framework in experiments with polarized sources.
