Workshop summary -- Kaons@CERN 2023

Kaon physics is at a turning point -- while the rare-kaon experiments NA62 and KOTO are in full swing, the end of their lifetime is approaching and the future experimental landscape needs to be defined. With HIKE, KOTO-II and LHCb-Phase-II on the table and under scrutiny, it is a very good moment in time to take stock and contemplate about the opportunities these experiments and theoretical developments provide for particle physics in the coming decade and beyond. This paper provides a compact summary of talks and discussions from the Kaons@CERN 2023 workshop.

Determination of the structure of the $K \to \pi\pi\pi$ amplitudes from recent data

This Letter provides a new determination of the ten real coefficients that describe the structure of the $K \to \pi\pi\pi$ amplitudes in the limit where isospin is conserved and complex phases, due to either CP violation or final-state rescattering, are neglected. This determination is obtained through a fit to the data on the Dalitz-plot structures and partial-decay rates collected during the last twenty years by several high-precision experiments. The fitting procedure and the way the experimental data have been handled in the fit are discussed in detail. Our fit leads to a more precise determination of the coefficients describing the linear and quadratic slopes of the $K \to \pi\pi\pi$ amplitudes.

Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian: One-Loop Renormalization Group Equations

Starting from the one-loop divergences we obtained previously, we work out the renormalization of the Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian explicitly and in detail. This includes the renormalization of the lowest-order Lagrangian, as well as the decomposition of the remaining divergences into a complete basis of next-to-leading-order counterterms. We provide the list of the corresponding beta functions. We show how our results match the one-loop renormalization of some of the dimension-6 operators in SMEFT. We further point out differences with related work in the literature and discuss them. As an application of the obtained results, we evaluate the divergences of the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field at one loop and show that they can be appropriately removed by the corresponding renormalization. We also work out the finite renormalization required to keep the no-tadpole condition on the Higgs field at one loop.

Scalar Meson Contributions to a_μfrom Hadronic Light-by-Light Scattering

Using an effective σ/f_0(500) resonance, which describes the ππ-->ππand γγ-->ππscattering data, we evaluate its contribution and the ones of the other scalar mesons to the the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) scattering component of the anomalous magnetic moment a_μof the muon. We obtain the conservative range of values: \sum_S~a_μ^{lbl}\vert_S = -(4.51+- 4.12) 10^{-11}, which is dominated by the σ/f_0(500) contribution ( 50%~98%), and where the large error is due to the uncertainties on the parametrisation of the form factors. Considering our new result, we update the sum of the different theoretical contributions to a_μwithin the standard model, which we then compare to experiment. This comparison gives (a_μ^{\rm exp} - a_μ^{SM})= +(312.1+- 64.3) 10^{-11}, where the theoretical errors from HLbL are dominated by the scalar meson contributions.

Complete One-Loop Renormalization of the Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian

Employing background-field method and super-heat-kernel expansion, we compute the complete one-loop renormalization of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian with a light Higgs boson. Earlier results from purely scalar fluctuations are confirmed as a special case. We also recover the one-loop renormalization of the conventional Standard Model in the appropriate limit.

Isospin breaking in the phases of the Ke4 form factors

Isospin breaking in the Kl4 form factors induced by the difference between charged and neutral pion masses is studied. Starting from suitably subtracted dispersion representations, the form factors are constructed in an iterative way up to two loops in the low-energy expansion by implementing analyticity, crossing, and unitarity due to two-meson intermediate states. Analytical expressions for the phases of the two-loop form factors of the K\pm -> pi^+ pi^- e^\pm nu_e channel are given, allowing one to connect the difference of form-factor phase shifts measured experimentally (out of the isospin limit) and the difference of S- and P-wave pi-pi phase shifts studied theoretically (in the isospin limit). The isospin-breaking correction consists of the sum of a universal part, involving only pi-pi rescattering, and a process-dependent contribution, involving the form factors in the coupled channels. The dependence on the two S-wave scattering lengths a_0^0 and a_0^2 in the isospin limit is worked out in a general way, in contrast to previous analyses based on one-loop chiral perturbation theory. The latter is used only to assess the subtraction constants involved in the dispersive approach. The two-loop universal and process-dependent contributions are estimated and cancel partially to yield an isospin-breaking correction close to the one-loop case. The recent results on the phases of K^\pm -> pi^+ pi^- e^\pm nu_e form factors obtained by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS are reanalysed including this isospin-breaking correction to extract values for the scattering lengths a_0^0 and a_0^2, as well as for low-energy constants and order parameters of two-flavour ChPT.

Two-loop representations of low-energy pion form factors and pi-pi scattering phases in the presence of isospin breaking

Dispersive representations of the pi-pi scattering amplitudes and pion form factors, valid at two-loop accuracy in the low-energy expansion, are constructed in the presence of isospin-breaking effects induced by the difference between the charged and neutral pion masses. Analytical expressions for the corresponding phases of the scalar and vector pion form factors are computed. It is shown that each of these phases consists of the sum of a "universal" part and a form-factor dependent contribution. The first one is entirely determined in terms of the pi-pi scattering amplitudes alone, and reduces to the phase satisfying Watson's theorem in the isospin limit. The second one can be sizeable, although it vanishes in the same limit. The dependence of these isospin corrections with respect to the parameters of the subthreshold expansion of the pi-pi amplitude is studied, and an equivalent representation in terms of the S-wave scattering lengths is also briefly presented and discussed. In addition, partially analytical expressions for the two-loop form factors and pi-pi scattering amplitudes in the presence of isospin breaking are provided.

Construction of the eta->3pi (and K->3pi) amplitudes using dispersive approach

The dispersive approach based only on very general principles, unitarity, analyticity and crossing symmetry, combined with chiral counting enables to construct fully relativistic model-independent representations of the eta and K three-pion decays valid up to and including two-loop corrections. Here we demonstrate the procedure on the eta->3pi^0 decay. We perform possible matchings of our dispersive approach with the two-loop ChPT result and briefly discuss corresponding predictions of the Dalitz plot slope parameter alpha.

Dispersive construction of two-loop P->3π(P=K,η) amplitudes

The branching ratio of the η->3πdecay is an important source of information on the value of the quark mass ratio 1/R=(m_d-m_u)/(m_s-\hat m). Furthermore, isospin breaking effects in the decays K->3πprovide information on the pion scattering lengths. The cusp effect in the K->3πdecays is presently being analyzed by the NA48 and KTeV experiments. From the theoretical point of view, these processes have been studied by different methods. We propose a unified and relativistic treatment relying on very general principles, unitarity, analyticity and crossing symmetry, combined with chiral counting, in order to construct model-independent representations of the corresponding amplitudes that are valid at two loops. A general description of the procedure is given and is illustrated in the case of the ηdecay amplitude in the leading order in the isospin breaking.

Photon polarization from helicity suppression in radiative decays of polarized Lambda_b to spin-3/2 baryons

We give a general parameterization of the Lambda_b --> Lambda(1520) gamma decay amplitude, applicable to any strange isosinglet spin-3/2 baryon, and calculate the branching fraction and helicity amplitudes. Large-energy form factor relations are worked out, and it is shown that the helicity-3/2 amplitudes vanish at lowest order in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). The suppression can be tested experimentally at the LHC and elsewhere, thus providing a benchmark for SCET. We apply the results to assess the experimental reach for a possible wrong-helicity b --> s gamma dipole coupling in Lambda_b --> Lambda(1520) gamma --> p K gamma decays. Furthermore we revisit Lambda_b-polarization at hadron colliders and update the prediction from heavy-quark effective theory. Opportunities associated with b --> d gamma afforded by high-statistics Lambda_b samples are briefly discussed in the general context of CP and flavour violation.

Electroweak Hadronic Contributions to the muon g-2

We reanalyze the two-loop electroweak hadronic contributions to the muon g-2 that may be enhanced by large logarithms. The present evaluation is improved over those already existing in the literature by the implementation of the current algebra Ward identities and the inclusion of the correct short-distance QCD behaviour of the relevant hadronic Green's function.

The pionic beta decay in chiral perturbation theory

Within the framework of chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons and leptons, we present an updated analysis of the pionic beta decay including all electromagnetic contributions of order e**2 p**2. We discuss the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vud| from experimental data. The method employed here is consistent with the analogous treatment of the Kl3 decays and the determination of |Vus|.

Hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon g-2: an effective field theory approach

The hadronic light-by-light contribution to a_{mu}, the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, is discussed from the point of view of an effective low-energy theory. As an application, the coefficient of the leading logarithm arising from the two-loop graphs involving two anomalous vertices is computed, and found to be positive. This corresponds to a positive sign for the pion-pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light correction to a_{mu}, and to a sizeable reduction of the discrepancy between the present experimental value of a_{mu} and its theoretical counterpart in the standard model.

Electromagnetic Corrections to Charged Pion Scattering at Low Energies

The electromagnetic corrections to the low energy scattering amplitude involving charged pions only are investigated at leading and next-to-leading orders in the two-flavour chiral expansion. As an application, the corresponding variation in the strong $2S-2P$ level shift is evaluated. The relative variation is of the order of 5%.

Radiative corrections to K_{l3} decays

We present a complete calculation of the K_{l3} decays K^+ --> pi^0 l^+ nu_l and K^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu_l to O(p^4, (m_d-m_u) p^2, e^2 p^2) in chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons and leptons. We introduce the concept of generalized form factors and kinematical densities in the presence of electromagnetism, and propose a possible treatment of the real photon emission in K^+_{l3} decays. We illustrate our results by applying them to the extraction of the Kobayashi--Maskawa matrix element |V_{us}| from the experimental K^+_{e3} decay parameters.
