Manipulation of electrical and ferromagnetic properties of photo-sensitized (Ga,Mn)As

We present the manipulation of magnetic and electrical properties of (Ga,Mn)As by the adsorption of dye-molecules as a first step towards the realization of light-controlled magnetic-semiconductor/dye hybrid devices. A significant lowering of the Curie temperature with a corresponding increase in electrical resistance and a higher coercive field is found for the GaMnAs/fluorescein system with respect to (Ga,Mn)As. Upon exposure to visible light a shift in Curie temperature towards higher values and a reduction of the coercive field can be achieved in photo-sensitized (Ga,Mn)As. A mayor change in the XPS spectrum of (Ga,Mn)As indicates the appearance of occupied levels in the energy range corresponding to the (Ga,Mn)As valence band states upon adsorption of fluorescein. This points towards a hole quenching effect at the molecule-(Ga,Mn)As interface which is susceptible to light exposure.

Iron pnictides: Single crystal growth and effect of doping on structural, transport and magnetic properties

We demonstrate the preparation of large, free standing iron pnictide single crystals with a size up to 20 x 10 x 1 mm3 using solvents in zirconia crucibles under argon atmosphere. Transport and magnetic properties are investigated to study the effect of potassium doping on the structural and superconducting property of the compounds. The spin density wave (SDW) anomaly at Ts ~138 K in BaFe2As2 single crystals from self-flux shifts to Ts ~85 K due to Sn solvent growth. We show direct evidence for an incorporation of Sn on the Fe site. The electrical resistivity data show a sharp superconducting transition temperature Tc~38.5 K for the single crystal of Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2. A nearly 100% shielding fraction and bulk nature of the superconductivity for the single crystal were confirmed by magnetic susceptibility data. A sharp transition Tc~25 K occurred for the single crystal of Sr0.85K0.15Fe2As2. There is direct evidence for a coexistence of the SDW and superconductivity in the low doping regime of Sr1-xKxFe2As2 single crystals. Structural implications of the doping effects as well as the coexistence of the two order parameters are discussed.

Optical response of ferromagnetic YTiO_3 studied by spectral ellipsometry

We have studied the temperature dependence of spectroscopic ellipsometry spectra of an electrically insulating, nearly stoichiometric YTiO_3 single crystal with ferromagnetic Curie temperature T_C = 30 K. The optical response exhibits a weak but noticeable anisotropy. Using a classical dispersion analysis, we identify three low-energy optical bands at 2.0, 2.9, and 3.7 eV. Although the optical conductivity spectra are only weakly temperature dependent below 300 K, we are able to distinguish high- and low-temperature regimes with a distinct crossover point around 100 K. The low-temperature regime in the optical response coincides with the temperature range in which significant deviations from Curie-Weiss mean field behavior are observed in the magnetization. Using an analysis based on a simple superexchange model, the spectral weight rearrangement can be attributed to intersite d_i^1d_j^1 \longrightarrow d_i^2d_j^0 optical transitions. In particular, Kramers-Kronig consistent changes in optical spectra around 2.9 eV can be associated with the high-spin-state (^3T_1) optical transition. This indicates that other mechanisms, such as weakly dipole-allowed p-d transitions and/or exciton-polaron excitations, can contribute significantly to the optical band at 2 eV. The recorded optical spectral weight gain of 2.9 eV optical band is significantly suppressed and anisotropic, which we associate with complex spin-orbit-lattice phenomena near ferromagnetic ordering temperature in YTiO_3.

Numerical Solution of Altarelli-Parisi Equations

We discuss numerical solution of Altarelli-Parisi equations in a Laguerre-polynomial method and in a brute-force method. In the Laguerre method, we get good accuracy by taking about twenty Laguerre polynomials in the flavor-nonsinglet case. Excellent evolution results are obtained in the singlet case by taking only ten Laguerre polynomials. The accuracy becomes slightly worse in the small and large $x$ regions, especially in the nonsinglet case. These problems could be implemented by using the brute-force method; however, running CPU time could be significantly longer than the one in the Laguerre method.

FORTRAN program for a numerical solution of the nonsinglet Altarelli-Parisi equation

We investigate a numerical solution of the flavor-nonsinglet Altarelli-Parisi equation with next-to-leading-order $α_s$ corrections by using Laguerre polynomials. Expanding a structure function (or a quark distribution) and a splitting function by the Laguerre polynomials, we reduce an integrodifferential equation to a summation of finite number of Laguerre coefficients. We provide a FORTRAN program for Q$^2$ evolution of nonsinglet structure functions (F$_1$, F$_2$, and F$_3$) and nonsinglet quark distributions. This is a very effective program with typical running time of a few seconds on SUN-IPX or on VAX-4000/500. Accurate evolution results are obtained by taking approximately twenty Laguerre polynomials.
