Scintillating properties of today available lead tungstate crystals

In the context of the ClearMind project, we measured the scintillating properties, as induced from from gamma ray interactions, of today available PbWO4 crystal. We measured scintillation s yields and time constants by measuring the signal shape measured on a fast photo-multiplier and deconvoluting it from the instrumental effects. For the doped crystals at room temperature, we measured a fast scintillation component, with time constants of 2 ns, 55 percent of the total light yield, and a slow component of 6 ns. We observe a significant increase of the light yield for the slow component when the temperature decreases and simultaneous increase of the time constants, but no increase in the fast component light yield. Our measurements reproduce the main qualitative features of PbWO4 crystals quoted in the literature. Quantitatively though, we measured significantly shorter time constants and larger light yields. This is explained by a rigorous treatment of the instrumental contributions in the measurements. Results are discussed and prospect for future developments, tailored for the ClearMind project, are presented.

Development of CaMoO4 crystal scintillators for double beta decay experiment with 100-Mo

Energy resolution, alpha/beta ratio, pulse-shape discrimination for gamma rays and alpha particles, temperature dependence of scintillation properties, and radioactive contamination were studied with CaMoO4 crystal scintillators. A high sensitivity experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 100-Mo by using CaMoO4 scintillators is discussed.

PWO crystals for CMS electromagnetic calorimeter : studies of the radiation damage kinetics

Kinetics of radiation damage of the PWO crystals under irradiation and recovery were studied. Crystals were irradiated with dose corresponding to average one expected in the electromagnetic calorimeter (working dose irradiation). Radiation damage and recovery were monitored through measurements of PWO optical transmission. An approach is proposed which allows evaluating the influence of the PWO crystals properties on the statistical term in the energy resolution of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The analysis also gives important information about the nature of the radiation damage mechanism in scintillation crystals. The method was used during development of technology of the mass production of radiation hard crystals and during development of methods for crystals certification

Application of PbWO4 crystal scintillators in experiment to search for double beta decay of 116Cd

PbWO4 crystal scintillators are discussed as an active shield and light-guides in 116Cd double beta decay experiment with CdWO4 scintillators. Scintillation properties and radioactive contamination of PbWO4 scintillators were investigated. Energy resolution of CdWO4 detector, coupled to PbWO4 crystal as a light-guide, was tested. Efficiency of PbWO4-based active shield to suppress background from the internal contamination of PbWO4 crystals was calculated. Using of lead tungstate crystal scintillators as high efficiency 4-pi active shield could allow to build sensitive double beta experiment with 116CdWO4 crystal scintillators.

On the Radiation Damage of BTeV EMCAL Detector Unit

Hamamatsu photomultiplier tubes (PMT) and various PMT window materials were exposed to gamma irradiation. Tests were performed with absorbed doses of 1 krad and 120 krad. Initial recommendations on PMT types to use in the BTeV electromagnetic calorimeter are stated.

Position-Sensitive Detector with Depth-of-Interaction Determination for Small Animal PET

Crystal arrays made of LSO and LuAP crystals 2x2x10 mm pixels were manufactured for evaluation of detector with depth-of-interaction (DOI) determination capability intended for small animal positron emission tomograph. Position-sensitive LSO/LuAP phoswich DOI detector based on crystal 8x8 arrays and HAMAMATSU R5900-00-M64 position-sensitive multi-anode photomultiplier tube was developed and evaluated. Time resolution was found to be not worse than 1.0 ns FWHM for both layers, and spatial resolution mean value was 1.5 mm FWHM for the center of field-of-view.
