Future mmVLBI Research with ALMA: A European vision

Very long baseline interferometry at millimetre/submillimetre wavelengths (mmVLBI) offers the highest achievable spatial resolution at any wavelength in astronomy. The anticipated inclusion of ALMA as a phased array into a global VLBI network will bring unprecedented sensitivity and a transformational leap in capabilities for mmVLBI. Building on years of pioneering efforts in the US and Europe the ongoing ALMA Phasing Project (APP), a US-led international collaboration with MPIfR-led European contributions, is expected to deliver a beamformer and VLBI capability to ALMA by the end of 2014 (APP: Fish et al. 2013, arXiv:1309.3519). This report focuses on the future use of mmVLBI by the international users community from a European viewpoint. Firstly, it highlights the intense science interest in Europe in future mmVLBI observations as compiled from the responses to a general call to the European community for future research projects. A wide range of research is presented that includes, amongst others: - Imaging the event horizon of the black hole at the centre of the Galaxy - Testing the theory of General Relativity an/or searching for alternative theories - Studying the origin of AGN jets and jet formation - Cosmological evolution of galaxies and BHs, AGN feedback - Masers in the Milky Way (in stars and star-forming regions) - Extragalactic emission lines and astro-chemistry - Redshifted absorption lines in distant galaxies and study of the ISM and circumnuclear gas - Pulsars, neutron stars, X-ray binaries - Testing cosmology - Testing fundamental physical constants

Thermal Dileptons at LHC

We predict dilepton invariant-mass spectra for central 5.5 ATeV Pb-Pb collisions at LHC. Hadronic emission in the low-mass region is calculated using in-medium spectral functions of light vector mesons within hadronic many-body theory. In the intermediate-mass region thermal radiation from the Quark-Gluon Plasma, evaluated perturbatively with hard-thermal loop corrections, takes over. An important source over the entire mass range are decays of correlated open-charm hadrons, rendering the nuclear modification of charm and bottom spectra a critical ingredient.

The BFKL Pomeron Calculus in the dipole approach

In this paper we continue to pursue a goal of finding an effective theory for high energy interaction in QCD based on the colour dipole approach, for which the BFKL Pomeron Calculus gives a low energy limit. The key problem, that we try to solve in this paper is the probabilistic interpretation of the BFKL Pomeron Calculus in terms of the colourless dipoles and their interactions. We demonstrate that the BFKL Pomeron Calculus has two equivalent descriptions : (i) one is the generating functional which gives a clear probabilistic interpretation of the processes of high energy scattering and also provides a Hamiltonian-like description of the system of interacting dipoles; (ii) the second is the Langevin equation with a specific noise term which is rather complicated. We found that at high energies this Langevin equation can be reduced to the Langevin equation for directed percolation in the momentum space if the impact parameter is large, namely, $b>> 1/k$, where $k$ is the transverse momentum of a dipole. Unfortunately, this simplified form of Langevin equation is not applicable for summation of Pomeron loops, where one integrates over all possible values of impact parameter. We show that the BFKL Pomeron calculus with two vertices (splitting $P\to P+P$ and merging $P+P\to P$ of Pomerons) can be interpreted as a system of colourless dipoles with two processes: the decay of one dipole into two and the merging of two dipoles into one dipole. However, a number of assumptions we have to make on the way to simplify the noise term in the Langevin equation and/or to apply the probabilistic interpretation, therefore, we can consider both of these approaches in the present form only as the QCD motivated models.

The BFKL Pomeron Calculus in zero transverse dimensions: diffractive processes and survival probability for central diffractive production

In this paper we discuss the processes of diffractive production in the framework of the BFKL Pomeron calculus in zero transverse dimension. Considering the diffractive production of a bunch of particles with not very large masses, namely, $\ln\Lb M^2/m^2 \Rb \ll \frac{1}{\bas} \ln\Lb \frac{N^2_c}{\bas^2}\Rb$, we found explicit formulae for calculation of the cross sections for the single and double diffractive production as well as for the value of the survival probability for the diffractive central production. These formulae include the influence of the correlations due to so called Pomeron loops on the values of all discussed observables. The comparison with the other approaches on the market is given. The main conclusion of this comparison: the Mueller-Patel-Salam-Iancu approximation gives sufficiently good descriptions and close to the exact result for elastic and diffractive cross section but considerable overshoot the value of the survival probability.

Solution for the BFKL Pomeron Calculus in zero transverse dimensions

In this paper the exact analytical solution is found for the BFKL Pomeron calculus in zero transverse dimensions, in which all Pomeron loops have been included. The comparison with the approximate methods of the solution is given, and the kinematic regions are discussed where they describe the behaviour of the scattering amplitude quite well. In particular, the semi-classical approach is considered, which reproduces the main properties of the exact solution at large values of rapidity ($Y \geq 10$). It is shown that the mean field approximation leads to a good description of the scattering amplitude only if the amplitude at low energy is rather large. However, even in this case, it does not lead to the correct asymptotic behaviour of the scattering amplitude at high energies.

Solution to the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation in the saturation domain

The solution to the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation is found in the deep saturation domain. The controversy between different approaches regarding the asymptotic behaviour of the scattering amplitude is solved. It is shown that the dipole amplitude behaves as $ 1 - \exp (- z + \ln z)$ with $ z = \ln (r^2 Q^2_s)$ ($ r$ -size of the dipole, $Q_s$ is the saturation scale) in the deep saturation region. This solution is developed from the scaling solution to the homogeneous Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. The dangers associated with making simplifications in the BFKL kernel, to investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the scattering amplitude, is pointed out . In particular, the fact that the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation belongs to the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piscounov -type of equation, needs further careful investigation.

The Iancu-Mueller factorization and high energy asymptotic behaviour

We show that the Iancu-Mueller factorization has a simple interpretation in the Reggeon - like technique based on the BFKL Pomeron. The formula for calculating the high energy asymptotic behaviour for the colour dipole-dipole amplitude is proposed which suggests a procedure to calculate this amplitude through the solution to the Balitsky-Kovchegov non-linear equation. We confirm the Iancu - Mueller result that a specific set of enhanced diagrams is responsible for the high energy behaviour for fixed QCD coupling. However, it is argued that in the case of running QCD coupling, this asymptotic behaviour originates from the Balitsky-Kovchegov non-linear equation. A new solution to the non-linear equation is found which leads to a different asymptotic behaviour of the scattering amplitude even for fixed QCD coupling..

QCD Saturation in the Semi-classical Approach

In this paper the semi-classical approach to the solution of non-linear evolution equation is developed. We found the solution in the entire kinematic region to the non-linear evolution equation that governs the dynamics in the high parton density QCD. The large impact parameter ($b_t$) behavior of the solution is discussed as well as the way how to include the non-perturbative QCD corrections in this region of $b_t$. The geometrical scaling behavior and other properties of the solution in the saturation (Color Glass Condensate) kinematic domain are analyzed. We obtain the asymptotic behavior for the physical observables and found the unitarity bounds for them.

Gamma^* - Gamma^* Scattering: Saturation and Unitarization in the BFKL approach

In this paper $γ^* - γ^*$ scattering with large, but more or less equal virtualities of two photons is discussed using BFKL dynamics, emphasizing the large impact parameter behavior ($b_t$) of the dipole-dipole amplitude. It is shown that the non-perturbative contribution is essential to fulfill the unitarity constraints in the region of $b_t > 1/2 m_π$, where $m_π$ is pion mass. The saturation and the unitarization of the dipole-dipole amplitude is considered in the framework of the Glauber-Mueller approach. The main result is that we can satisfy the unitarity constraints introducing the non-perturbative corrections only in initial conditions (Born amplitude).

All-electron Dirac-Coulomb and RECP calculations of excitation energies for mercury atom with combined CI/MBPT2 method

Calculations of transition energies between low-lying states of mercury atom are performed in the frame of combined CI/MBPT2 method. Results of all-electron relativistic calculations (using the Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian) are compared with experimental data and results of other four-component calculations. The results of the RECP calculations are compared with the corresponding all-electron results in order to estimate accuracy of different RECPs. Contributions from correlations in different shells to the calculated excitation energies as well as effects of basis set truncation at different orbital angular momenta, nuclear models, errors in gaussian approximation of the GRECP components are reported. Analysis of the obtained results shows that at least 34 external electrons of mercury atom should be correlated and the one-electron basis set should contain up to h angular momentum functions in order to reach a reliable agreement with experimental data within 200 1/cm. It is concluded that correlations of the 4f electrons can be efficiently taken into account for 20 electron GRECP at the generation stage.

Enhancement of the electric dipole moment of the electron in BaF molecule

We report results of ab initio calculation of the spin-rotational Hamiltonian parameters including P- and P,T-odd terms for the BaF molecule. The ground state wave function of BaF molecule is found with the help of the Relativistic Effective Core Potential method followed by the restoration of molecular four-component spinors in the core region of barium in the framework of a non-variational procedure. Core polarization effects are included with the help of the atomic Many Body Perturbation Theory for Barium atom. For the hyperfine constants the accuracy of this method is about 5-10%.
