Development of a hardened THz energy meter for use on the kilojoule-scale, short-pulse OMEGA EP laser

A highly adaptable and robust THz energy meter has been designed and implemented to detect energetic THz pulses from high intensity (greater than 1E18 watts per square centimeter) laser plasma interactions on OMEGA EP. THz radiation from the laser driven target is detected by a shielded pyrometer. A second identical pyrometer is used for background subtraction. The detector can be configured to detect THz pulses in the 1 mm to 30 microns (0.3 to 10 THz) range and pulse energies from joules to microjoules via changes in filtration, aperture size and position. Additional polarization selective filtration can also be used to determine THz pulse polarization. The design incorporates significant radiation and EMP shielding to survive and operate within the OMEGA EP radiation environment. We describe the design, operational principle, calibration and testing of the THz energy meter. The pyrometers were calibrated using a benchtop laser and show linear sensitivity up to 1000 nJ of absorbed energy. Initial results from four OMEGA EP THz experiments detected up to 15 microjoules at the detector, which can correspond to 100s of mJ depending on THz emission and reflection models.

Highly conductive molecular junctions based on direct binding of benzene to platinum electrodes

Highly conductive molecular junctions were formed by direct binding of benzene molecules between two Pt electrodes. Measurements of conductance, isotopic shift in inelastic spectroscopy and shot noise compared with calculations provide indications for a stable molecular junction where the benzene molecule is preserved intact and bonded to the Pt leads via carbon atoms. The junction has a conductance comparable to that for metallic atomic junctions (around 0.1-1 Go), where the conductance and the number of transmission channels are controlled by the molecule's orientation at different inter-electrode distances.

Electron-vibration interaction in single-molecule junctions: from contact to tunneling regime

Point contact spectroscopy on a H2O molecule bridging Pt electrodes reveals a clear crossover between enhancement and reduction of the conductance due to electron-vibration interaction. As single channel models predict such a crossover at transmission probability of t=0.5, we used shot noise measurements to analyze the transmission and observed at least two channels across the junction where the dominant channel has t=0.51+/-0.01 transmission probability at the crossover conductance, which is consistent with the predictions for single-channel models.

Curie temperature and carrier concentration gradients in MBE grown GaMnAs layers

We report on detailed investigations of the electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic GaMnAs layers, which have been fabricated by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy. Superconducting quantum interference device measurements reveal a decrease of the Curie temperature from the surface to the GaMnAs/GaAs interface. While high resolution x-ray diffraction clearly shows a homogeneous Mn distribution, a pronounced decrease of the carrier concentration from the surface towards the GaMnAs/GaAs interface has been found by Raman spectroscopy as well as electrochemical capacitance-voltage profiling. The gradient in Curie temperature seems to be a general feature of GaMnAs layers grown at low-temperature. Possible explanations are discussed.
