Photoneutron reactions on $^{165}$Ho and $^{169}$Tm in the giant dipole resonance region

Photoneutron reactions were investigated for the deformed $^{165}$Ho and $^{169}$Tm nuclei from the vicinity of the neutron emission threshold up to $\sim$40~MeV, well above the giant dipole resonance (GDR) region, using quasimonochromatic laser Compton scattering $γ$-ray beams provided at the NewSUBARU facility, Japan. A high-and-flat efficiency moderated array of $^3$He counters was used for the neutron detection and an associated neutron multiplicity sorting method for extracting the $(γ,\,1nX)$, $(γ,\,2nX)$, $(γ,\,3nX)$ and $(γ,\,4nX)$ reaction cross sections and average neutron emission energies. The present $^{165}$Ho cross sections were compared to existing data, revealing discrepancies with the Saclay multiplicity sorting results and an overall 10$\%$ strength difference with the Livermore ones. There are no other data for $^{169}$Tm. GDR parameters based on phenomenological Lorentzian models were extracted by fitting the present $σ(γ,\,Sn)$ data with adjustments for the missing contribution of charged-particle-only reactions not observed experimentally. For both nuclei we observed high energy structures at 20-25~MeV, matching giant quadrupole resonance KMFR predictions. Based on the present centroid energies of the first and second GDR peaks, hydrodynamic model predictions gave intrinsic electric quadrupole moments of +7.00(34)~b and +7.38(28)~b for the ground states of $^{165}$Ho and $^{169}$Tm, respectively. The present experimental excitation functions and photoneutron energies were compared to statistical model calculations. Using the EMPIRE code, we performed a sensitivity test to phenomenological models of photon strength functions and nuclear level densities. The TALYS code was used to reproduce the present experimental $(γ,\,inX)$ cross sections and average neutron energies using microscopic nuclear level density models.

ELIGANT-TN -- ELI Gamma Above Neutron Threshold: The Thermal Neutron setup

Here we present the thermal neutron counter from the ELI Gamma Above Neutron Threshold setup at the Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics. We describe the mechanical design of the setup, the properties of the ${}^{3}$He gas counters, and the hardware data-acquisition electronics and software digital signal processing. The performance of the complete detector array is demonstrated via Geant4 and MCNP simulations, and measurements with typical neutron sources. The analysis procedure for experimental measurements are outlined with a in-beam test experiment with an $α$ beam to measure the ${}^{13}\mathrm{C}(α,\mathrm{n}_{0}){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ cross-section branching ratios.

Photoneutron reactions on gold in the giant dipole resonance region: reaction cross sections and average kinetic energies of $(γ,\,xn)$ photoneutrons

In this work, we present new data on the $^{197}$Au photoneutron reactions in and above the giant dipole resonance region, obtained by using 8 to 39~MeV quasi-monochromatic $γ$-ray beams produced at the NewSUBARU facility in Japan and a high-and-flat efficiency neutron detection system. We report absolute cross sections and mean photoneutron energies for the $^{197}$Au$(γ,\,inX)$ reactions with $i$~=~1 to 4. The photoabsorption cross section was obtained as the sum of the $(γ,\,inX)$ reaction cross sections. The giant dipole resonance parameter values were obtained by fitting the experimental photoabsorption cross sections. The present photoabsorption cross sections are in good agreement with the Saclay results of Veyssiere~\emph{et al.}. Thus, our study does not support the recommendation of Berman~\emph{et al.} of lowering the Saclay photoabsorption cross sections by 8$\%$. We observed a non-statistical high-energy neutron emission in the $(γ,\,n)$ reaction in the low-energy region between $S_n$ and 10~MeV. The present results are compared with data from the literature and statistical model calculations performed with the TALYS and EMPIRE codes.

Coulomb and nuclear excitations of $^{70}$Zn and $^{68}$Ni at intermediate energy

The reduced transition probabilities $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+,2^+_2)$ in $^{70}$Zn and the full $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2^+)$ strength up to S$_n$=7.79 MeV in $^{68}$Ni have been determined at the LISE/GANIL facility using the Coulomb-excitation technique at intermediate beam energy on a $^{208}$Pb target. The $γ$ rays emitted in-flight were detected with an array of 46 BaF$_2$ crystals. The angles of the deflected nuclei were determined in order to disentangle and extract the Coulomb and nuclear contributions to the excitation of the 2$^+$ states. The measured $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+)$ of 1432(124) e$^2$fm$^4$ for $^{70}$Zn falls in the lower part of the published values which clustered either around 1600 or above 2000 e$^2$fm$^4$, while the $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2^+_2)$ of 53(7) e$^2$fm$^4$ agrees very well with the two published values. The relatively low $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+)$ of 301(38) e$^2$fm$^4$ for $^{68}$Ni agrees with previous studies and confirms a local magicity at $Z=28, N=40$. Combining the results of the low-energy spectra of $^{68}$Ni and $^{70}$Zn and their shell-model interpretations, it is interesting to notice that four different shapes (spherical, oblate, prolate and triaxial) are present. Finally, a summed $E2$ strength of only about 150 e$^2$fm$^4$ has been found experimentally at high excitation energy, likely due to proton excitations across the $Z=28$ gap. The experimental distribution of this high-energy $E2$ excitation agrees with SM calculations, but its strength is about two times weaker.

Shape Coexistence at Zero Spin in 64Ni Driven by the Monopole Tensor Interaction

The low-spin structure of the semimagic 64Ni nucleus has been considerably expanded: combining four experiments, several 0+ and 2+ excited states were identified below 4.5 MeV, and their properties established. The Monte Carlo shell model accounts for the results and unveils an unexpectedly complex landscape of coexisting shapes: a prolate 0+ excitation is located at a surprisingly high energy (3463 keV), with a collective 2+ state 286 keV above it, the first such observation in Ni isotopes. The evolution in excitation energy of the prolate minimum across the neutron N = 40 subshell gap highlights the impact of the monopole interaction and its variation in strength with N.

Charged particle decay of hot and rotating $^{88}$Mo nuclei in fusion-evaporation reactions

A study of fusion-evaporation and (partly) fusion-fission channels for the $^{88}$Mo compound nucleus, produced at different excitation energies in the reaction $^{48}$Ti + $^{40}$Ca at 300, 450 and 600 MeV beam energies, is presented. Fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission cross sections have been extracted and compared with the existing systematics. Experimental data concerning light charged particles have been compared with the prediction of the statistical model in its implementation in the Gemini++ code, well suited even for high spin systems, in order to tune the main model parameters in a mass region not abundantly covered by exclusive experimental data. Multiplicities for light charged particles emitted in fusion evaporation events are also presented. Some discrepancies with respect to the prediction of the statistical model have been found for forward emitted $α$-particles; they may be due both to pre-equilibrium emission and to reaction channels (such as Deep Inelastic Collisions, QuasiFission/QuasiFusion) different from the compound nucleus formation.
