Performance of the PRAXyS X-ray Polarimeter

The performance of the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) polarimeter for the Polarimeter for Relativistic Astrophysical X-ray Sources (PRAXyS) Small Explorer was evaluated using polarized and unpolarized X-ray sources. The PRAXyS mission will enable exploration of the universe through X-ray polarimetry in the 2-10 keV energy band. We carried out performance tests of the polarimeter at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, National Synchrotron Light Source (BNL-NSLS) and at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The polarimeter was tested with linearly polarized, monochromatic X-rays at 11 different energies between 2.5 and 8.0 keV. At maximum sensitivity, the measured modulation factors at 2.7, 4.5 and 8.0 keV are 27%, 43% and 59%, respectively and the measured angle of polarization is consistent with the expected value at all energies. Measurements with a broadband, unpolarized X-ray source placed a limit of less than 1% on false polarization in the PRAXyS polarimeter.

Thermal generation of spin current in an antiferromagnet

Longitudinal spin Seebeck effect has been investigated for an uniaxial antiferromagnetic insulator Cr2O3, characterized by a spin-flop transition under magnetic field along the c-axis. We have found that temperature gradient applied normal to Cr2O3/Pt interface induces inverse spin Hall voltage of spin current origin in Pt, whose magnitude turns out to be always proportional to magnetization in Cr2O3. The observed voltage shows significant enhancement for the lower temperature region, which can be ascribed to the phonon-drag effect on the relevant spin excitations. The above results establish that antiferromagnetic spin waves with high frequency above 100 GHz can be an effective carrier of spin current.

Nonreciprocal spin wave propagation in chiral-lattice ferromagnets

Spin current, i.e. the flow of spin angular momentum or magnetic moment, has recently attracted much attention as the promising alternative for charge current with better energy efficiency. Genuine spin current is generally carried by the spin wave (propagating spin precession) in insulating ferromagnets, and should hold the chiral symmetry when it propagates along the spin direction. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that such a spin wave spin current (SWSC) shows nonreciprocal propagation characters in a chiral-lattice ferromagnet. This phenomenon originates from the interference of chirality between the SWSC and crystal-lattice, which is mediated by the relativistic spin-orbit interaction. The present finding enables the design of perfect spin current diode, and highlights the importance of the chiral aspect in SWSC.

Discretized Topological Hall Effect Emerging from Skyrmions in Constricted Geometry

We investigate the skyrmion formation process in nano-structured FeGe Hall-bar devices by measurements of topological Hall effect, which extracts the winding number of a spin texture as an emergent magnetic field. Step-wise profiles of topological Hall resistivity are observed in the course of varying the applied magnetic field, which arise from instantaneous changes in the magnetic nano-structure such as creation, annihilation, and jittering motion of skyrmions. The discrete changes in topological Hall resistivity demonstrate the quantized nature of emergent magnetic flux inherent in each skyrmion, which had been indistinguishable in many-skyrmion systems on a macroscopic scale.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of PrFeAsO_{0.7}: Dependence of the electronic structure on the pnictogen height

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the iron-based superconductor PrFeAsO_{0.7} and examined the Fermi surfaces and band dispersions near the Fermi level. Heavily hole-doped electronic states have been observed due to the polar nature of the cleaved surfaces. Nevertheless, we have found that the ARPES spectra basically agree with band dispersions calculated in the local density approximation (LDA) if the bandwidth is reduced by a factor of ~2.5 and then the chemical potential is lowered by ~70 meV. Comparison with previous ARPES results on LaFePO reveals that the energy positions of the d_{3z^2-r^2}- and d_{yz,zx}-derived bands are considerably different between the two materials, which we attribute to the different pnictogen height as predicted by the LDA calculation.

Two- and Three-Dimensional Fermi Surfaces and their Nesting Properties in Superconducting BaFe2(As1-xPx)2

We have studied the three-dimensional shapes of the Fermi surfaces (FSs) of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (x=0.38), where superconductivity is induced by isovalent P substitution, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Moderately strong electron mass enhancement has been identified for both the electron and hole FSs. Among two observed hole FSs, the nearly two-dimensional one shows good nesting with the outer two-dimensional electron FS, but its orbital character is different from the outer electron FS. The three-dimensional hole FS shows poor nesting with the electron FSs. The present results suggest that the three-dimensionality and the difference in the orbital character weaken FS nesting, leaving partial nesting among the outer electron FSs of dxy character and/or that within the three-dimensional hole FS, which may lead to the nodal superconductivity.

Mass renormalization in the band width-controlled Mott-Hubbard systems SrVO3 and CaVO3 studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Ca1-xSrxVO3 is a Mott-Hubbard-type correlated electron system whose bandwidth can be varied by the V-O-V bond angle, but the actual effect of bandwidth control on the electronic structure has been controversial in previous photoemission experiments. In this work, band dispersions and Fermi surfaces of SrVO3 and CaVO3 are studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Near the Fermi level (EF), three bands forming cylindricalFermi surfaces derived from the three V 3d t2g orbitals have been observed. The observed band widths for both compounds are almost half of those predicted by local-density-approximation band-structure calculation, confirming mass renormalization caused by electron correlation. It has been clearly demonstrated that the width of the d band in CaVO3 is narrower than that in SrVO3, qualitatively consistent with the result of band-structure calculation. Roles of the orthorhombic lattice distortion and electron correlation in the observed band narrowing are discussed.

Characteristic electronic structure and its doping evolution in lightly-doped to underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy

We have performed an angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of lightly-doped to underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) untwinned single crystals and a core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) study of YBCO single and polycrystals. In the zone diagonal (nodal) direction, dispersive quasi-particle (QP) features crossing the Fermi level were observed down to the hole concentration of ~ 4%, which explains the metallic transport of the lightly-doped YBCO. The chemical potential shift estimated from XPS was more rapid than in the Bi2212 cuprates. Upon hole doping, very rapid spectral weight transfer from high binding energies to the QP feature, even faster than La2-xSrxCuO4, was observed.

Enhanced superconducting gaps in the tri-layer high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$

We have investigated the optimally doped tri-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ (Bi2223) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and observed energy bands and Fermi surfaces originated from the outer and inner CuO$_2$ planes (OP and IP) separately. The OP band is overdoped (hole density $\sim$ 0.26/Cu) with a large d-wave gap of $Δ_0$ $\sim$ 43 meV while the IP is underdoped ($\sim$ 0.06/Cu) with an even large gap of $Δ_0$ $\sim$ 60 meV. We propose that the enhancement of the $Δ_0$ of IP is due to the minimal influence of out-of-plane disorder and that the OP gap is then enhanced through interlayer coupling, most likely a proximity effect from the IP.

Effects of out-of-plane disorder on the nodal quasiparticle and superconducting gap in single-layer Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}Ln_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ ($Ln$ = La, Nd, Gd)

How out-of-plane disorder affects the electronic structure has been investigated for the single-layer cuprates Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$$Ln$$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ ($Ln$ = La, Nd, Gd) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We have observed that, with increasing disorder, while the Fermi surface shape and band dispersions are not affected, the quasi-particle width increases, the anti-nodal gap is enhanced and the superconducting gap in the nodal region is depressed. The results indicate that the superconductivity is significantly depressed by out-of-plane disorder through the enhancement of the anti-nodal gap and the depression of the superconducting gap in the nodal region.

Differences in the high-energy kink between hole- and electron-doped high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$ (NCCO) in order to elucidate the origin of the high-energy kink (HEK) observed in the high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors (HTSCs). The energy scale of the HEK in NCCO is large compared with that in hole-doped HTSCs, consistent with previous ARPES studies. From measurement in a wide momentum region, we have demonstrated that between the hole- and electron-doped HTSCs the energy position of the HEK is shifted approximately by the amount of the chemical potential difference. Also, we have found that around $(π, 0)$ the HEK nearly coincides with the band bottom while around the node the band reaches the incoherent region and the HEK appears at the boundary between the coherent and incoherent regions.

Universal versus Material-Dependent Two-Gap Behaviors in the High-Tc Cuprates: Angle-Resolved Photoemission Study of La2-xSrxCuO4

We have investigated the doping and temperature dependences of the pseudogap/superconducting gap in the single-layer cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The results clearly exhibit two distinct energy and temperature scales, namely, the gap around ($π$,0) of magnitude $Δ^*$ and the gap around the node characterized by the d-wave order parameter $Δ_0$, like the double-layer cuprate Bi2212. In comparison with Bi2212 having higher $T_c$'s, $Δ_0$ is smaller, while $Δ^*$ and $T^*$ are similar. This result suggests that $Δ^*$ and $T^*$ are approximately material-independent properties of a single CuO$_2$ plane, in contrast the material-dependent $Δ_0$, representing the pairing strength.

Observation of Coherent Precession of Magnetization in Superfluid 3He A-phase

We report the first observation of coherent quantum precession of magnetization (CQP) in superfluid 3He-A in aerogel. The coherent precession in bulk 3He A-phase is unstable due to the positive feedback of spin supercurrent to the gradient of phase of precession. It was predicted that the homogeneous precession will be stable if the orbital momentum of 3He-A could be oriented along the magnetic field. We have succeeded to prepare this configuration by emerging 3He in uniaxially-deformed anisotropic aerogel. The dissipation rate of coherent precession states in aerogel is much larger then one in bulk 3He-B. We propose a mechanism of this dissipation.

Effects of chemical pressure on the Fermi surface and band dispersion in the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and first-principles electronic structure calculations on the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors Ln1.85Ce0.15CuO4 (Ln = Nd, Sm, and Eu). The observed Fermi surface and band dispersion show such changes that with decreasing ionic size of Ln3+, the curvature of the Fermi surface or -t'/t decreases, where t and t' are transfer integrals between the nearest-neighbor and next-nearestneighbor Cu sites, respectively. The increase of t with chemical pressure is found to be significant, which may explain the apparently inconsistent behavior seen in the hole-doped La2-xSrxCuO4 under epitaxial strain [M. Abrecht et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 057002 (2003)]. A gap due to the antiferromagnetism opens even in the nodal region for the Sm and Eu compounds, and the gap size increases in going from Ln = Sm to Eu.

Doping evolution of the electronic structure in the single-layer cuprates Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$: Comparison with other single-layer cuprates

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission and core-level x-ray photoemission studies of the single-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and revealed the doping evolution of the electronic structure from the lightly-doped to optimally-doped regions. We have observed the formation of the dispersive quasi-particle band, evolution of the Fermi ``arc'' into the Fermi surface and the shift of the chemical potential with hole doping as in other cuprates. The doping evolution in Bi2201 is similar to that in Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_2$ (Na-CCOC), where a rapid chemical potential shift toward the lower Hubbard band of the parent insulator has been observed, but is quite different from that in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (LSCO), where the chemical potential does not shift, yet the dispersive band and the Fermi arc/surface are formed around the Fermi level already in the lightly-doped region. The (underlying) Fermi surface shape and band dispersions are quantitatively analyzed using tight-binding fit, and the deduced next-nearest-neighbor hopping integral $t'$ also confirm the similarity to Na-CCOC and the difference from LSCO.

Annealing Effect for Supersolid Fraction in $^4$He

We report on experimental confirmation of the non-classical rotational inertia (NCRI) in solid helium samples originally reported by Kim and Chan. The onset of NCRI was observed at temperatures below ~400 mK. The ac velocity for initiation of the NCRI suppression is estimated to be ~10 $μ$m/sec. After an additional annealing of the sample at $T= 1.8$ K for 12 hours, ~ 10% relative increase of NCRI fraction was observed. Then after repeated annealing with the same conditions, the NCRI fraction was saturated. It differs from Reppy's observation on a low pressure solid sample.

Lanthanide substitution effects in electron-doped high-Tc superconductors studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors (HTSCs) Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4} (SCCO) and Eu_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4} (ECCO). Around the nodal point (pi/2, pi/2), we observed an energy gap at the Fermi level (EF) for both samples, resulting from the strong effects of antiferromagnetism. The magnitude of this gap in ECCO is larger than that in SCCO, implying that the effects of antiferromagnetism in ECCO are stronger than that in SCCO. Also, we quantitatively confirmed the effects of antiferromagnetism by the band dispersions to tight-binding calculation.

NMR of superfluid 3He in anisotropic aerogel

We report on orientation of the order parameter in the 3He-A and 3He-B phases caused by aerogel anisotropy. In 3He-A we have observed relatively homogeneous NMR line with an anomalously large negative frequency shift. We can attribute this effect to an orientation of orbital momentum along the axis of density anisotropy. The similar orientation effect we have seen in 3He-B. We can measure the A-phase Leggett frequency, which shows the same energy gap suppression as in the B-phase. We observe a correlation of A - B transition temperature and NMR frequency shift.
