Microscopic investigation of spin dynamics in the single-chain magnet Sr4Mn2CoO9

One-dimensional single-chain magnets offer a unique platform for studying the interplay of crystal-field effects, exchange interactions, and lattice dynamics. Here, we investigate spin excitations in Sr4Mn2CoO9 using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and theoretical modelling. INS reveals two low-energy magnetic excitations at 4 and 7 meV from Mn-Co-Mn spin chains, alongside higher-energy crystal-electric-field (CEF) excitations from two crystallographically inequivalent Co2+ sites. Interestingly, these spin excitations persist at room temperature, demonstrating dynamic magnetic correlations in the absence of long-range order. Furthermore, the crystal-field modelling, based on Stevens operator formalism, reproduces well the CEF spectra, establishing Ising-like Kramers ground-state doublets with strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy for both Co2+ ions. In addition, the spin wave simulation using SpinW reproduces the spin excitation spectrum and reveals microscopic exchange interactions in two non-interacting Mn-Co-Mn spin chains. Finally, machine-learning lattice-dynamics calculations confirm the phonon spectrum and spin-phonon coupling. By projecting the exchange Hamiltonian onto CEF ground-state doublets, we estimate exchange-induced splittings matching the observed excitations. Thus, our results elucidate low-energy spin dynamics arising from combined crystal-field anisotropy and exchange interactions, with the persistent low-energy excitation providing a microscopic pathway for thermally activated spin relaxation. Furthermore, this work delivers a unified microscopic understanding of the interplay between crystal-field effects, magnetic exchange, and lattice dynamics in Sr4Mn2CoO9, advancing insights into spin dynamics in low-dimensional transition-metal oxides.

Effect of Acoustics on Droplet Grouping Behaviour in a Single Stream of Droplets

Droplet and particle grouping can be influenced by applying an acoustic field and have practical applications such as particle scavenging and aerosol filters of engine exhaust and air purifiers. The present work experimentally investigates the influence of a standing acoustic wave on a single stream of droplets. The experimental setup consists of an acoustic transducer and a reflector plate through which the droplet stream passes in the presence or absence of an external pressure field generated by a standing acoustic wave. A droplet stream is generated with the help of a nozzle connected to a pressurized working fluid supply and piezoelectric transducer to control the spacing between droplets. The effect of the acoustic pressure field on the droplet stream generated by the nozzle operated at different piezoelectric excitation frequencies and fluid pressures is investigated. Droplet stream characteristics at every nozzle excitation frequency are observed with a high-speed camera when the acoustic field is switched OFF and ON. The competing effect of nozzle excitation frequency and acoustic field is observed. At lower nozzle frequencies, the nozzle generates an unstable stream of droplets having different sizes and spacings between them. When the acoustic field is applied at these lower frequencies, the stream of droplets becomes organized, and in some cases, it becomes equispaced and of the same size. However, an opposite behavior is observed at higher frequencies. In these cases, as the acoustic field is applied, an equispaced mono-disperse droplet stream becomes unstable due to the coalescence of droplets within the stream.

First Light from Beam Neutrinos on an LAPPD in ANNIE

The Accelerator Neutrino Neutron Interaction Experiment (ANNIE) is both a physics experiment and a technology testbed for next-generation light-based neutrino detection. In this paper, we report the first demonstration of a fully integrated Large Area Picosecond Photodetector (LAPPD) operating in a running neutrino beam experiment. Particular focus is given to the design, commissioning, and successful deployment of the Packaged ANNIE LAPPD (PAL), a waterproof, self-triggering module incorporating fast waveform digitization and precision timing synchronized to the ANNIE detector subsystems. We identify beam-correlated LAPPD data frames consistent with charged-current neutrino interactions observed in multiple detector subsystems, establishing the first detection of neutrino-induced Cherenkov light with an LAPPD. These results validate the system-level performance of LAPPDs under realistic experimental conditions-including long-term stability, timing synchronization, and event matching with conventional PMT and muon detector systems-marking a critical step toward their deployment in future large-scale neutrino and particle detectors.

Unconventional S-orbital state of Tb and cooperative Ru(4d)-Tb(4f) spin-ordering in strongly correlated 4d-4f system, Ba3TbRu2O9

The 6H-perovskite Ba3RRu2O9 (R = rare-earth), composed of Ru2O9 dimers connected through RO6 octahedra, exhibits an intriguing variety of magnetic ground states, ranging from non-magnetic to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, depending on the specific R ion. In this study, we investigate the compound Ba3TbRu2O9 using magnetic susceptibility measurements and time-of-flight neutron diffraction experiments. Our combined bulk and microscopic analyses reveal that the Tb4+ (4f7) electronic configuration results in an s-like state with an orbital moment L=0 and spin-only value of S=7/2, and Ru4+ exhibits a spin-only value of S=1 despite the presence of strong spin-lattice coupling in this compound, representing a sharp contrast to other reported members of this family. A cooperative 4d-4f spin ordering is observed below the Neel temperature (around 9.5 K), indicating strong Ru(4d)=Tb(4f) correlations in the system. The Tb-moments order antiferromagnetically in the bc-plane, whereas the Ru-moments are aligned antiferromagnetically along the b-axis. Furthermore, a collinear antiferromagnetic arrangement of spins is observed within the Ru2O9 dimers throughout the structure, unlike other reported members of this series (e.g., Ho and Nd).

Unravelling the Antimicrobial Action Mechanism of Ribosomal Protein S30

Ribosomal protein S30 (RS30) exhibits potent antimicrobial activity against a broad spectrum of bacteria. Despite its efficacy, the underlying action mechanism remained elusive. In this study, we unravel the fundamental mechanism by which RS30 exerts its bactericidal effects, using a combination of microbiological assays and advanced biophysical techniques. Microbiological analyses reveal that RS30 kills bacteria primarily through membrane depolarization, despite limited membrane permeabilization, indicating an unconventional mode of action involving no or partial lysis of the membrane. Importantly, RS30 demonstrates time-dependent bactericidal activity with no detectable cytotoxicity toward mammalian cells, underscoring its high selectivity. This selective action was further confirmed using biophysical experiments on model membrane systems composed of anionic (bacterial mimic) and zwitterionic (mammalian mimic) phospholipids. Our measurements suggested that RS30 preferentially binds to anionic membranes via electrostatic interactions, undergoes a conformational transition from a random coil to an {\alpha}-helix upon binding, and induces vesicle aggregation. Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) measurements provide microscopic insights, showing that RS30 significantly restricts the lateral diffusion of anionic lipids, thereby perturbing membrane dynamics and increasing susceptibility to external stress. Together, our findings uncover important insights into the antimicrobial action mechanism of RS30, characterized by selective membrane interaction, structural transformation, and dynamic modulation of lipid membranes.

Interplay between trimer structure and magnetic ground state in Ba5Ru3O12 probed by Neutron and muSR techniques

We report a detailed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and muon spin relaxation (muSR) investigation of a trimer Ruthenate Ba5Ru3O12 system, which undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at TN = 60 K. The INS reveals two distinct spin wave excitations below TN: one at 5.6 meV and the other at 10-15 meV. By accompanying the INS spectra based on a linear spin wave theory using SpinW software and machine learning force fields (MLFFs), we show that Ba5Ru3O12 exhibits spin frustration due to competing exchange interactions between neighboring and next-neighboring Ru-moments, exchange anisotropy, and strong spin-orbit coupling, which yields a non-collinear spin structure, in contrast to other ruthenate trimers in this series. Interestingly, these magnetic excitations do not completely vanish even at high temperatures above TN, evidencing short-range magnetic correlations in this trimer system. This is further supported by muSR spectroscopy, which exhibits a gradual drop in the initial asymmetry around the magnetic phase transition and is further verified through maximum entropy analysis. The results of muSR spectroscopy indicate a dynamic nature of magnetic order, attributed to local magnetic anisotropy within the trimer as a result of local structural distortion and different hybridization, consistent with canted spin-structure. We predict the ground state of Ru3O12-isolated trimer through theoretical calculations, which agree with the experimentally observed spin excitation

Observation of near-scission "polar" and "equatorial" proton emission in heavy-ion induced fission

Proton and $\alpha$-particle energy spectra were measured in coincidence with fission fragments at different relative angles in $^{16}$O (96 MeV) + $^{232}$Th reaction. The multiplicity spectra were analyzed within the framework of a Moving Source Disentangling Analysis (MSDA) to determine contributions from different emission stages. The MSDA conclusively shows ``Near Scission Emission (NSE)" as an essential component in the multiplicity spectra. In contrast to NSE $\alpha$ particles which emit mainly perpendicular (``equatorial emission"), the NSE protons are observed to be emitted perpendicular as well as parallel (``polar emission") to the fission axis with similar intensities ($\sim$20\% for each). Thus, around 40\% of total pre-scission protons are emitted near the scission stage, whereas the same fraction for $\alpha$ particles is only around 10\%. The inevitable presence of ``polar" and ``equatorial" NSE protons in a heavy-ion induced fission has been observed for the first time. Present results open up a new avenue to study the heavy-ion induced fission dynamics.

Study of $\chi_{bJ}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)$ at Belle

We report a study of the hadronic transitions $\chi_{bJ}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)$, with $\omega\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$, using $28.2\times10^6~\Upsilon(3S)$ mesons recorded by the Belle detector. We present the first evidence for the near--threshold transition $\chi_{b0}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)$, the analog of the near-threshold charm sector decay $\chi_{c1}(3872)\to\omega J/\psi$, with a branching fraction of $\cal{B}\big(\chi_{b0}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)\big) = \big(0.55\pm0.19\pm0.07\big)\%$. We also obtain branching fractions of $\cal{B}\big(\chi_{b1}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)\big) = \big(2.39{}^{+0.20}_{-0.19}\pm0.24\big)\%$ and $\cal{B}\big(\chi_{b2}(2P)\to\omega\Upsilon(1S)\big) = \big(0.47{}^{+0.13}_{-0.12}\pm0.06\big)\%$, confirming the measurement of the $\omega$ transitions of the $J=1,2~P$--wave states. The ratio for the $J=2$ to $J=1$ transitions is also measured and found to differ by 3.3 standard deviations from the expected value in the QCD multipole expansion.

Evidence of random spin-singlet state in a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid candidate Sr$_3$CuNb$_2$O$_9$

Disorder is ubiquitous in any quantum many-body system and is usually considered to be an obstacle to the elucidation of the underlying physics of complex systems, but its presence can often introduce exotic phases of matter that cannot generally be realized in a clean system. We report here a detailed experimental and theoretical study of magnetic properties of highly disordered Sr$_3$CuNb$_2$O$_9$ material which exhibits random site mixing between Cu and Nb. The magnetic moments (Cu$^{2+}$) are arranged in a quasi-cubic (three-dimensional) manner, leading to a high degree of frustration with a Curie-Weiss temperature ($\theta_{CW}$) of about -60 K without any long-range magnetic ordering down to 466 mK. These observations suggest that Sr$_3$CuNb$_2$O$_9$ is a candidate for a quantum spin liquid. More interestingly, the susceptibility ($\chi = M/\mu_0H$) and the $C_m/T$ ($C_m$ is the magnetic part of the heat capacity) follow a power-law behavior with decreasing temperature. In addition, $M(T,\mu_0H)$ and $C_m(T,\mu_0H)/T$ show scaling relationships over a wide temperature and field range. This unusual behavior with respect to the conventional behavior of a QSL can be discussed qualitatively as the coexistence of a disorder-induced random spin singlet (RSS) state and a QSL state. A quantitative description has been given by numerical calculations considering a power-law probability distribution $P(J) \propto J^{-\gamma}$ ($J$ is the exchange interaction) of random spin singlets. The parameters extracted from the numerical calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, the analytical results are also consistent with the power-law and scaling behavior of $\chi$ and $C_m(T,\mu_0H)/T$ as a whole. Thus, our comprehensive experimental and theoretical analysis provides evidence for the stabilization of the RSS state in a three-dimensional lattice.

Hot Carrier Nanowire Transistors at the Ballistic Limit

We demonstrate experimentally non-equilibrium transport in unipolar quasi-1D hot electron devices reaching ballistic limit. The devices are realized with heterostructure engineering in nanowires to obtain dopant- and dislocation-free 1D-epitaxy and flexible bandgap engineering. We show experimentally the control of hot electron injection with a graded conduction band profile and subsequent filtering of hot and relaxed electrons with rectangular energy barriers. The number of electron passing the barrier depends exponentially on the transport length with a mean free path of 200 - 260 nm and reaches ballistic transport regime for the shortest devices with 70 % of the electrons flying freely through the base electrode and the barrier reflections limiting the transport to the collector.

Measurement of the Ratio of Partial Branching Fractions of Inclusive $\overline{B} \to X_u \ell \overline{\nu}$ to $\overline{B} \to X_{c} \ell \overline{\nu}$ and the Ratio of their Spectra with Hadronic Tagging

We present a measurement of the ratio of partial branching fractions of the semi-leptonic inclusive decays, $\overline{B} \to X_{u} \ell \overline{\nu}$ to $\overline{B} \to X_{c} \ell \overline{\nu}$, where $\ell = (e, \mu)$, using the full Belle sample of $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B \kern 0.18em\overline{\kern -0.18em B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. The ratio is measured via a two-dimensional fit to the squared four-momentum transfer to the lepton pair, and the charged lepton energy in the $B$ meson rest frame, where the latter must be larger than $1$ Ge\kern -0.1em V, covering approximately $86\%$ and $78\%$ of the $\overline{B} \to X_{u} \ell \overline{\nu}$ and $\overline{B} \to X_{c} \ell \overline{\nu}$ phase space, respectively. We find $\Delta \mathcal{B}(\overline{B} \to X_{u} \ell \overline{\nu})/ \Delta \mathcal{B}(\overline{B} \to X_{c} \ell \overline{\nu}) = (1.99 \pm 0.17_{\rm stat} \pm 0.16_{\rm syst}) \times 10^{-2}$ where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. In addition, we report the partial branching fractions separately for charged and neutral $B$ meson decays, and for electron and muon decay channels. We place a limit on isospin breaking in $\overline{B} \to X_{u} \ell \overline{\nu}$ decays, and find no indication of lepton flavor universality violation in either the charmed or charmless mode. Furthermore, we unfold the $\overline{B} \to X_{u} \ell \overline{\nu}$ and $\overline{B} \to X_{c} \ell \overline{\nu}$ yields and report the differential ratio in lepton energy and four-momentum transfer squared.

Measurement of Angular Coefficients of $\bar{B} \to D^* \ell \bar{\nu}_\ell$: Implications for $|V_{cb}|$ and Tests of Lepton Flavor Universality

We measure the complete set of angular coefficients $J_i$ for exclusive $\bar{B} \to D^* \ell \bar{\nu}_\ell$ decays ($\ell = e, \mu$). Our analysis uses the full $711\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ Belle data set with hadronic tag-side reconstruction. The results allow us to extract the form factors describing the $B \to D^*$ transition and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{\rm cb}|$. Using recent lattice QCD calculations for the hadronic form factors, we find $|V_{\rm cb}| = (41.0 \pm 0.7) \times 10^3 $ using the BGL parameterization, compatible with determinations from inclusive semileptonic decays. We search for lepton flavor universality violation as a function of the hadronic recoil parameter $w$, and investigate the differences of the electron and muon angular distributions. We find no deviation from Standard Model expectations.

In the absence of significant signals, we set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range $(5 - 8) \times 10^{-7}$ at a 90\% confidence level, depending on the decay mode.

Origin of spin-driven ferroelectricity and effect of external pressure on the complex magnetism of 6H-perovskite Ba3HoRu2O9

The compound Ba3HoRu2O9 magnetically orders at 50 K (TN1) followed by another complex magnetic ordering at 10.2 K (TN2). The 2nd magnetic phase transition was characterized by the co-existence of two competing magnetic ground states associated with two different magnetic wave vectors (K1=1/2 0 0 and K2=1/4 1/4 0). Here, we have discussed the origin of spin-driven ferroelectricity, which is not known yet. We demonstrate through time-of-flight Neutron diffraction and theoretical calculation that the non-collinear structure involving two different magnetic ions, Ru(4d) and Ho(4f), break the spatial inversion symmetry via inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (D-M) interaction through strong 4d-4f magnetic correlation, which shifts the oxygen atoms and results in non-zero polarization. Such an observation of inverse D-M interaction from two different magnetic ions which caused ferroelectricity is rarely observed. We have systematically studied the spin and dipolar dynamics, which exhibit intriguing behavior with shorter coherence lengths of 2nd magnetic phase associated with the k2-wave vector. The results manifest the development of finite-size magnetoelectric domains instead of true long-range ordering which justifies the experimentally obtained low value of ferroelectric polarization. The synchrotron XRD analysis predicts a non-centrosymmetric space group P-62c. Furthermore, we have investigated the effect of external pressure on this complex magnetism. The result reveals an enhancement of ordering temperature by the application of external pressure (1.6 K/GPa). The external pressure might favor stabilizing the magnetic ground state associated with 2nd magnetic phase. Our study shows an unconventional mechanism of spin-driven ferroelectricity.

Search for charged-lepton flavor violation in $\Upsilon(2S) \to \ell^\mp\tau^\pm$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) decays at Belle

We report a search for the charged-lepton flavor violation in $\Upsilon(2S) \to \ell^\mp\tau^\pm$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) decays using a $25~\fbi$ $\Upsilon(2S)$ sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}$$e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider. We find no evidence for a signal and set upper limits on the branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) at 90\% confidence level. We obtain the most stringent upper limits: $\mathcal{B}(\Ytomutau) < 0.23 \times 10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\Ytoetau) < 1.12 \times 10^{-6}$.

Observation of charmed strange meson pair production in $\Upsilon(2S)$ decays and in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s} = 10.52~ \rm{GeV}$

We observe the process $\Upsilon(2S)\to D_s^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^{-}$ and continuum production $e^+e^- \to D_s^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^- $ at $\sqrt{s} = 10.52$ GeV (and their charge conjugates) using the data samples collected by the Belle detector at KEKB, where $D_{sJ}^-$ is $D_{s1}(2536)^-$ or $D^{*}_{s2}(2573)^-$. Both $D_{sJ}^-$ states are identified through their decay into $\bar{K}\bar{D}^{(*)}$. We measure the products of branching fractions ${\cal B}(\Upsilon(2S) \to D_{s}^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^-) {\cal B}(D_{sJ}^-\to \bar{K} \bar{D}^{(*)})$ and the Born cross sections $\sigma^{\rm Born}(e^+e^- \to D_{s}^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^-) {\cal B}(D_{sJ}^-\to \bar{K} \bar{D}^{(*)})$, and then compare the ratios $R_1 \equiv {\cal B}(\Upsilon(2S)\to D_{s}^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^-)/{\cal B}(\Upsilon(2S)\to\mu^{+}\mu^-)$ for $\Upsilon(2S)$ decays and $R_2 \equiv \sigma^{\rm Born}(e^+e^-\to D_{s}^{(*)+}D_{sJ}^-)/\sigma^{\rm Born}(e^+e^-\to \mu^{+}\mu^-)$ for continuum production. We obtain $R_1/R_2 = 9.7\pm 2.3 \pm 1.1$, $6.8 \pm 2.1 \pm 0.8$, $10.2 \pm 3.3 \pm 2.5$, and $3.4 \pm 2.1 \pm 0.5$ for the $D_s^+ D_{s1}(2536)^-$, $D_s^{*+} D_{s1}(2536)^-$, $D_s^+ D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-}$, and $D_s^{*+} D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-}$ final states in the $D_{sJ}^-\to K^{-} \bar{D}^{(*)0}$ modes, respectively. Therefore, the strong decay is expected to dominate in the $\Upsilon(2S)\to D_{s}^{(*)+}D_{sJ}^-$ processes. We also measure the ratios of branching fractions ${\cal B}(D_{s1}(2536)^-\to K_S^0 D^{*}(2010)^{-})/{\cal B}(D_{s1}(2536)^-\to K^{-} D^{*}(2007)^0) = 0.48 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.02$ and ${\cal B}(D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^- \to K_S^0 D^-)/{\cal B}(D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^- \to K^{-}D^0) = 0.49 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.02$, which are consistent with isospin symmetry. The second ratio is the first measurement of this quantity. Here, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Search for the double-charmonium state with $\eta_c J/\psi$ at Belle

We also search for double charmonium production in $e^+e^-\rightarrow\eta_c J/\psi$ via initial state radiation near the $\eta_c J/\psi$ threshold. No evident signal of the double charmonium state is found, but evidence for the $e^+e^-\rightarrow\eta_c J/\psi$ process is found with a statistical significance greater than $3.3\sigma$ near the $\eta_c J/\psi$ threshold. The average cross section near the threshold is measured and upper limits of cross sections are set for other regions.
