Broadband, millimeter-wave anti-reflective structures on sapphire ablated with femto-second laser

We designed, fabricated, and measured anti-reflection coating (ARC) on sapphire that has 116% fractional bandwidth and transmission of at least 97% in the millimeter wave band. The ARC was based on patterning pyramid-like sub-wavelength structures (SWS) using ablation with a 15 W femto-second laser operating at 1030 nm. One side of each of two discs was fabricated with SWS that had a pitch of 0.54 mm and height of 2 mm. The average ablation volume removal rate was 1.6 mm$^{3}$/min. Measurements of the two-disc sandwich show transmission higher than 97% between 43 and 161 GHz. We characterize instrumental polarization (IP) arising from differential transmission due to asymmetric SWS. We find that with proper alignment of the two disc sandwich RMS IP across the band is predicted to be 0.07% at normal incidence, and less than 0.6% at incidence angles up to 20 degrees. These results indicate that laser ablation of SWS on sapphire and on other hard materials such as alumina is an effective way to fabricate broad-band ARC.

Momentum-dependent sign-inversion of orbital polarization in superconducting FeSe

We investigate the electronic reconstruction across the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition in FeSe by employing polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on detwinned single crystals. Across the structural transition, the electronic structures around the G and M points are modified from four-fold to two-fold symmetry due to the lifting of degeneracy in dxz/dyz orbitals. The dxz band shifts upward at the G point while it moves downward at the M point, suggesting that the electronic structure of orthorhombic FeSe is characterized by a momentum-dependent sign-changing orbital polarization. The elongated directions of the elliptical Fermi surfaces (FSs) at the G and M points are rotated by 90 degrees with respect to each other, which may be related to the absence of the antiferromagnetic order in FeSe.

Lifting of xz/yz orbital degeneracy at the structural transition in detwinned FeSe

We study superconducting FeSe (Tc = 9 K) exhibiting the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition (Ts = 90 K) without any antiferromagnetic ordering, by utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In the detwinned orthorhombic state, the energy position of the dyz orbital band at the Brillouin zone corner is 50 meV higher than that of dxz, indicating the orbital order similar to NaFeAs and BaFe2As2 families. Evidence of orbital order also appears in the hole bands at the Brillouin zone center. Precisely measured temperature dependence using strain-free samples shows that the onset of the orbital ordering (To) occurs very close to Ts, thus suggesting that the electronic nematicity above Ts is considerably weaker in FeSe compared to BaFe2As2 family.

Stochastically sustained population oscillations in high-beta nanolasers

Non-linear dynamical systems involving small populations of individuals may sustain oscillations in the population densities arising from the discrete changes in population numbers due to random events. By applying these ideas to nanolasers operating with small numbers of emitting dipoles and photons at threshold, we show that such lasers should display photon and dipole population cycles above threshold, which should be observable as a periodic modulation in the second-order correlation function of the nanolaser output. Such a modulation was recently reported in a single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting semiconductor laser.

Testing the validity of THz reflection spectra by dispersion relations

Complex response function obtained in reflection spectroscopy at terahertz range is examined with algorithms based on dispersion relations for integer powers of complex reflection coefficient, which emerge as a powerful and yet uncommon tools in examining the consistency of the spectroscopic data. It is shown that these algorithms can be used in particular for checking the success of correction of the spectra by the methods of Vartiainen et al [1] and Lucarini et al [2] to remove the negative misplacement error in the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy.

Dispersion relations of the powers of complex reflection coefficient in testing the validity of THz spectra

Kramers-Kronig type dispersion relations for integer powers of complex reflection coefficient are introduced for testing the consistency of terahertz reflection spectra. By using numerical simulations we show that such dispersion relations can be applied for distillation from data with some experimental artifacts without data extrapolations beyond the measured spectral range. These dispersion relations, due to causality, provide a powerful and yet uncommon tool to examine the consistency of the spectroscopic data obtained in reflection spectroscopy at terahertz range. In particular we show that real and imaginary parts of the complex reflection coefficient obtained from raw data with systematic phase error caused by sample misplacement, not necessarily obey dispersion relations, while the ones corrected with maximum entropy method obey these relations.

Study of ortho-to-paraexciton conversion in Cu$_2$O by excitonic Lyman spectroscopy

Using time-resolved $1s$-$2p$ excitonic Lyman spectroscopy, we study the orthoexciton-to-paraexcitons transfer, following the creation of a high density population of ultracold $1s$ orthoexcitons by resonant two-photon excitation with femtosecond pulses. An observed fast exciton-density dependent conversion rate is attributed to spin exchange between pairs of orthoexcitons. Implication of these results on the feasibility of BEC of paraexcitons in Cu$_2$O is discussed.

Formation and decay of electron-hole droplets in diamond

We study the formation and decay of electron-hole droplets in diamonds at both low and high temperatures under different excitations by master equations. The calculation reveals that at low temperature the kinetics of the system behaves as in direct-gap semiconductors, whereas at high temperature it shows metastability as in traditional indirect-gap semiconductors. Our results at low temperature are consistent with the experimental findings by Nagai {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 68}, 081202 (R) (2003)]. The kinetics of the e-h system in diamonds at high temperature under both low and high excitations is also predicted.

Photo-induced demagnetization and polaron binding energy increase observed by mid-infrared pump-probe spectroscopy in ferromagnetic Ga$_{0.94}$Mn$_{0.06}$As

Time-resolved transmittance measurements performed on Ga$_{0.94}$Mn$_{0.06}$As in the vicinity of the Mn-induced mid-infrared absorption band are presented. Upon photo-excitation, a slow increase (hundreds of ps timescale) of the differential transmittance is observed and found to be directly related to demagnetization. The temporal profiles of the transmittance and of the demagnetization measured by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy are found to coincide. Well below the Curie temperature, the maximum amplitude of the slow component of the differential transmittance as a function of the probe energy is on the rising edge of the linear absorption peak, suggesting that ferromagnetic ordering can be explained by a coupling of the Mn local spins through bound magnetic polarons.

Observation of the spin-charge thermal isolation of ferromagnetic Ga_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}As by time-resolved magneto-optical measurement

The dynamics of magnetization under femtosecond optical excitation is studied in a ferromagnetic semiconductor Ga_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}As with a time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurement with two color probe beams. The transient reflectivity change indicates the rapid rise of the carrier temperature and relaxation to a quasi-thermal equilibrium within 1 ps, while a very slow rise of the spin temperature of the order of 500ps is observed. This anomalous behavior originates from the thermal isolation between the charge and spin systems due to the spin polarization of carriers (holes) contributing to ferromagnetism. This constitutes experimental proof of the half-metallic nature of ferromagnetic Ga_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}As arising from double exchange type mechanism originates from the d-band character of holes.

Study of the formation and decay of electron-hole plasma clusters in a direct-gap semiconductor CuCl

The master equation for the cluster-size distribution function is solved numerically to investigate the electron-hole droplet formation claimed to be discovered in the direct-gap CuCl excited by picosecond laser pulses [Nagai {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 5795 (2001); J. Lumin. {\bf 100}, 233 (2002)]. Our result shows that for the excitation in the experiment, the average number of pairs per cluster (ANPC) is only around 5.2, much smaller than that (10$^6$ typically for Ge) of the well studied electron-hole droplet in indirect-gap semiconductors such as Ge and Si.

Dimensionality dependence of optical nonlinearity and relaxation dynamics in cuprates

Femtosecond pump-probe measurements find pronounced dimensionality dependence of the optical nonlinearity in cuprates. Although the coherent two-photon absorption (TPA) and linear absorption bands nearly overlap in both quasi-one and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) cuprates, the TPA coefficient is one order of magnitude smaller in 2D than in 1D. Furthermore, picosecond recovery of optical transparency is observed in 1D cuprates, while the recovery in 2D involves relaxation channels with a time scales of tens of picoseconds. The experimental results are interpreted within the two-band extended Hubbard model.

Ultrafast spin dynamics and critical behavior in half-metallic ferromagnet : Sr_2FeMoO_6

Ultrafast spin dynamics in ferromagnetic half-metallic compound Sr_2FeMoO_6 is investigated by pump-probe measurements of magneto-optical Kerr effect. Half-metallic nature of this material gives rise to anomalous thermal insulation between spins and electrons, and allows us to pursue the spin dynamics from a few to several hundred picoseconds after the optical excitation. The optically detected magnetization dynamics clearly shows the crossover from microscopic photoinduced demagnetization to macroscopic critical behavior with universal power law divergence of relaxation time for wide dynamical critical region.

Ultrafast optical nonlinearity in quasi-one-dimensional Mott-insulator ${\rm Sr_2CuO_3}$

We report strong instantaneous photoinduced absorption (PA) in the quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator ${\rm Sr_2CuO_3}$ in the IR spectral region. The observed PA is to an even-parity two-photon state that occurs immediately above the absorption edge. Theoretical calculations based on a two-band extended Hubbard model explains the experimental features and indicates that the strong two-photon absorption is due to a very large dipole-coupling between nearly degenerate one- and two-photon states. Room temperature picosecond recovery of the optical transparency suggests the strong potential of ${\rm Sr_2CuO_3}$ for all-optical switching.
