Thermal entanglement in a spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ distorted diamond chain with the second-neighbor interaction between nodal Ising spins

We consider a spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ distorted diamond chain with the XYZ interaction between the interstitial Heisenberg dimers, the nearest-neighbor Ising coupling between the nodal and interstitial spins, respectively, and the second-neighbor Ising coupling between the nodal spins. The ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ distorted diamond chain exhibits several intriguing phases due to the XY anisotropy and the second-neighbor interaction, whereas the model can be exactly solved using the transfer-matrix technique. The quantum entanglement within the Heisenberg spin dimers is studied through a bipartite measure concurrence, which is calculated from a relevant reduced density operator. The concurrence may either show a standard thermal dependence with a monotonous decline with increasing temperature or a more peculiar thermal dependence accompanied with reentrant behavior of the concurrence. It is conjectured that the bipartite entanglement between the interstitial Heisenberg spin pairs in the natural mineral azurite is quite insensitive to the applied magnetic field and it persists up to approximately 30 Kelvins.

Quantum entanglement and drifting generated by an AC field resonant with frequency-doubled Bloch oscillations of correlated particles

We show that initially localized and uncorrelated two-particles quantum wavepackets evolving in a one-dimensional discrete lattice become strongly entangled while drifting under the action of an harmonic AC field resonant with doubled Bloch oscillations promoted by a static DC field. Although partial entanglement is achieved when the AC field is resonant with the single-particle Bloch oscillations, it is strongly limited by the survival of anti-correlated unbounded states. We further show that the phase dependence of the wavepacket centroid velocity is similar to the semiclassical behavior depicted by a single-particle. However, the drift velocity exhibits a non-trivial non-monotonic dependence on the interaction strength, vanishing in the limit of uncorrelated particles, that unveils its competing influence on unbounded and bounded states.

Spin frustration and fermionic entanglement in an exactly solved hybrid diamond chain with the localized Ising spins and mobile electrons

The strongly correlated spin-electron system on a diamond chain containing localized Ising spins on its nodal lattice sites and mobile electrons on its interstitial sites is exactly solved in a magnetic field using the transfer-matrix method. We have investigated in detail all available ground states, the magnetization processes, the spin-spin correlation functions around an elementary plaquette, fermionic quantum concurrence and spin frustration. It is shown that the fermionic entanglement between mobile electrons hopping on interstitial sites and the kinetically-induced spin frustration are closely related yet independent phenomena. In the ground state, quantum entanglement only appears within a frustrated unsaturated paramagnetic phase, while thermal fluctuations can promote some degree of quantum entanglement above the non-frustrated ground states with saturated paramagnetic or classical ferrimagnetic spin arrangements.

Wave packet dynamics in chains with delayed electronic nonlinear response

We study the dynamics of one electron wave packet in a chain with a non-adiabatic electron-phonon interaction. The electron-phonon coupling is taken into account in the time-dependent Schrödinger equation by a delayed cubic nonlinearity. In the limit of an adiabatic coupling, the self-trapping phenomenon occurs when the nonlinearity parameter exceeds a critical value of the order of the band width. We show that a weaker nonlinearity is required to produce self-trapping in the regime of short delay times. However, this trend is reversed for slow nonlinear responses, resulting in a reentrant phase-diagram. In slowly responding media, self-trapping only takes place for very strong nonlinearities.

Bias driven coherent carrier dynamics in a two-dimensional aperiodic potential

We study the dynamics of an electron wave-packet in a two-dimensional square lattice with an aperiodic site potential in the presence of an external uniform electric field. The aperiodicity is described by $ε_{\bf m} = V\cos{(παm_x^{ν_x})}\cos{(παm_y^{ν_y})}$ at lattice sites $(m_x, m_y)$, with $πα$ being a rational number, and $ν_x$ and $ν_y$ tunable parameters, controlling the aperiodicity. Using an exact diagonalization procedure and a finite-size scaling analysis, we show that in the weakly aperiodic regime ($ν_x,ν_y < 1$), a phase of extended states emerges in the center of the band at zero field giving support to a macroscopic conductivity in the thermodynamic limit. Turning on the field gives rise to Bloch oscillations of the electron wave-packet. The spectral density of these oscillations may display a double peak structure signaling the spatial anisotropy of the potential landscape. The frequency of the oscillations can be understood using a semi-classical approach.

Coherent electron dynamics in a two-dimensional random system with mobility edges

We study numerically the dynamics of a one-electron wave packet in a two-dimensional random lattice with long-range correlated diagonal disorder in the presence of a uniform electric field. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is used for this purpose. We find that the wave packet displays Bloch-like oscillations associated with the appearance of a phase of delocalized states in the strong correlation regime. The amplitude of oscillations directly reflects the bandwidth of the phase and allows to measure it. The oscillations reveal two main frequencies whose values are determined by the structure of the underlying potential in the vicinity of the wave packet maximum.

Localization properties of a one-dimensional tight-binding model with non-random long-range inter-site interactions

We perform both analytical and numerical studies of the one-dimensional tight-binding Hamiltonian with stochastic uncorrelated on-site energies and non-fluctuating long-range hopping integrals . It was argued recently [A. Rodriguez at al., J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 33, L161 (2000)] that this model reveals a localization-delocalization transition with respect to the disorder magnitude provided . The transition occurs at one of the band edges (the upper one for and the lower one for). The states at the other band edge are always localized, which hints on the existence of a single mobility edge. We analyze the mobility edge and show that, although the number of delocalized states tends to infinity, they form a set of null measure in the thermodynamic limit, i.e. the mobility edge tends to the band edge. The critical magnitude of disorder for the band edge states is computed versus the interaction exponent by making use of the conjecture on the universality of the normalized participation number distribution at transition.

Critical wave-packet dynamics in the power-law bond disordered Anderson Model

We investigate the wave-packet dynamics of the power-law bond disordered one-dimensional Anderson model with hopping amplitudes decreasing as $H_{nm}\propto |n-m|^{-α}$. We consider the critical case ($α=1$). Using an exact diagonalization scheme on finite chains, we compute the participation moments of all stationary energy eigenstates as well as the spreading of an initially localized wave-packet. The eigenstates multifractality is characterized by the set of fractal dimensions of the participation moments. The wave-packet shows a diffusive-like spread developing a power-law tail and achieves a stationary non-uniform profile after reflecting at the chain boundaries. As a consequence, the time-dependent participation moments exhibit two distinct scaling regimes. We formulate a finite-size scaling hypothesis for the participation moments relating their scaling exponents to the ones governing the return probability and wave-function power-law decays.

Bloch oscillations in an aperiodic one-dimensional potential

We study the dynamics of an electron subjected to a static uniform electric field within a one-dimensional tight-binding model with a slowly varying aperiodic potential. The unbiased model is known to support phases of localized and extended one-electron states separated by two mobility edges. We show that the electric field promotes sustained Bloch oscillations of an initial Gaussian wave packet whose amplitude reflects the band width of extended states. The frequency of these oscillations exhibit unique features, such as a sensitivity to the initial wave packet position and a multimode structure for weak fields, originating from the characteristics of the underlying aperiodic potential.

Bloch-like oscillations in a one-dimensional lattice with long-range correlated disorder

We study the dynamics of an electron subjected to a uniform electric field within a tight-binding model with long-range-correlated diagonal disorder. The random distribution of site energies is assumed to have a power spectrum $S(k) \sim 1/k^α$ with $α> 0$. Moura and Lyra [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 81}, 3735 (1998)] predicted that this model supports a phase of delocalized states at the band center, separated from localized states by two mobility edges, provided $α> 2$. We find clear signatures of Bloch-like oscillations of an initial Gaussian wave packet between the two mobility edges and determine the bandwidth of extended states, in perfect agreement with the zero-field prediction.

Critical behavior of an epidemic model of drug resistant diseases

In this work, we study the critical behavior of an epidemic propagation model that considers individuals that can develop drug resistance. In our lattice model, each site can be found in one of four states: empty, healthy, normally infected (not drug resistant) and strain infected (drug resistant) states. The most relevant parameters in our model are related to the mortality, cure and mutation rates. This model presents two distinct stationary active phases: a phase with co-existing normal and drug resistant infected individuals and an intermediate active phase with only drug resistant individuals. We employ a finite-size scaling analysis to compute the critical points the critical exponents ratio $β/ν$ governing the phase-transitions between these active states and the absorbing inactive state. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that these transitions belong to the directed percolation universality class.

Delocalization and wave-packet dynamics in one-dimensional diluted Anderson models

We study the nature of one-electron eigen-states in a one-dimensional diluted Anderson model where every Anderson impurity is diluted by a periodic function $f(l)$ . Using renormalization group and transfer matrix techniques, we provide accurate estimates of the extended states which appear in this model, whose number depends on the symmetry of the diluting function $f(l)$. The density of states (DOS) for this model is also numerically obtained and its main features are related to the symmetries of the diluting function $f(l)$. Further, we show that the emergence of extended states promotes a sub-diffusive spread of an initially localized wave-packet.

Damage spreading in the Bak-Sneppen model: Sensitivity to the initial conditions and equilibration dynamics

The short-time and long-time dynamics of the Bak-Sneppen model of biological evolution are investigated using the damage spreading technique. By defining a proper Hamming distance measure, we are able to make it exhibits an initial power-law growth which, for finite size systems, is followed by a decay towards equilibrium. In this sense, the dynamics of self-organized critical states is shown to be similar to the one observed at the usual critical point of continuous phase-transitions and at the onset of chaos of non-linear low-dimensional dynamical maps. The transient, pre-asymptotic and asymptotic exponential relaxation of the Hamming distance between two initially uncorrelated equilibrium configurations is also shown to be fitted within a single mathematical framework. A connection with nonextensive statistical mechanics is exhibited.

Generalized Zipf's Law in proportional voting processes

Voting data from city-councillors, state and federal deputies elections are analyzed and considered as a response function of a social system with underlying dynamics leading to complex behavior. The voting results from the last two general Brazilian elections held in 1998 and 2000 are then used as representative data sets. We show that the voting distributions follow a generalized Zipf's Law which has been recently proposed within a nonextensive statistics framework. Moreover, the voting distribution for city-councillors is clearly distinct from those of state and federal deputies in the sense that the latter depicts a higher degree of nonextensivity. We relate this finding with the different degrees of complexity corresponding to local and non-local voting processes.

The origin of fat tailed distributions in financial time series

A classic problem in physics is the origin of fat tailed distributions generated by complex systems. We study the distributions of stock returns measured over different time lags $τ.$ We find that destroying all correlations without changing the $τ= 1$ d distribution, by shuffling the order of the daily returns, causes the fat tails almost to vanish for $τ>1$ d. We argue that the fat tails are caused by known long-range volatility correlations. Indeed, destroying only sign correlations, by shuffling the order of only the signs (but not the absolute values) of the daily returns, allows the fat tails to persist for $τ>1$ d.

Delocalization in harmonic chains with long-range correlated random masses

We study the nature of collective excitations in harmonic chains with masses exhibiting long-range correlated disorder with power spectrum proportional to $1/k^α$, where $k$ is the wave-vector of the modulations on the random masses landscape. Using a transfer matrix method and exact diagonalization, we compute the localization length and participation ratio of eigenmodes within the band of allowed energies. We find extended vibrational modes in the low-energy region for $α> 1$. In order to study the time evolution of an initially localized energy input, we calculate the second moment $M_2(t)$ of the energy spatial distribution. We show that $M_2(t)$, besides being dependent of the specific initial excitation and exhibiting an anomalous diffusion for weakly correlated disorder, assumes a ballistic spread in the regime $α>1$ due to the presence of extended vibrational modes.

Kinematics of stock prices

We investigate the general problem of how to model the kinematics of stock prices without considering the dynamical causes of motion. We propose a stochastic process with long-range correlated absolute returns. We find that the model is able to reproduce the experimentally observed clustering, power law memory, fat tails and multifractality of real financial time series. We find that the distribution of stock returns is approximated by a Gaussian with log-normally distributed local variance and shows excellent agreement with the behavior of the NYSE index for a range of time scales.

Delocalization and spin-wave dynamics in ferromagnetic chains with long-range correlated random exchange

We study the one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet with exchange couplings exhibiting long-range correlated disorder with power spectrum proportional to $1/k^α$, where $k$ is the wave-vector of the modulations on the random coupling landscape. By using renormalization group, integration of the equations of motion and exact diagonalization, we compute the spin-wave localization length and the mean-square displacement of the wave-packet. We find that, associated with the emergence of extended spin-waves in the low-energy region for $α> 1$, the wave-packet mean-square displacement changes from a long-time super-diffusive behavior for $α<1$ to a long-time ballistic behavior for $α> 1$. At the vicinity of $α=1$, the mobility edge separating the extended and localized phases is shown to scale with the degree of correlation as $E_c\propto (α-1)^{1/3}$.
