Comparison of 4d and 3d Lattice Results for the Electroweak Phase Transition

We compare 4d lattice results for the finite temperature phase transition in the SU(2)+Higgs model with 3d lattice results for the phase transition in the corresponding dimensionally reduced effective theory. While the large errorbars and the lack of a relation of the 4d lattice gauge coupling to continuum physics prevent rigorous conclusions, the results are nevertheless compatible. This provides a direct non-perturbative check of dimensional reduction in the present context.

On Bubble Growth and Droplet Decay in Cosmological Phase Transitions

We study spherically symmetric bubble growth and droplet decay in first order cosmological phase transitions, using a numerical code including both the complete hydrodynamics of the problem and a phenomenological model for the microscopic entropy producing mechanism at the phase transition surface. The small-scale effects of finite wall width and surface tension are thus consistently incorporated. We verify the existence of the different hydrodynamical growth modes proposed recently and investigate the problem of a decaying quark droplet in the QCD phase transition. We find that the decaying droplet leaves behind no rarefaction wave, so that any baryon number inhomogeneity generated previously should survive the decay.

The Electroweak Phase Transition: A Non-Perturbative Analysis

We study on the lattice the 3d SU(2)+Higgs model, which is an effective theory of a large class of 4d high temperature gauge theories. Using the exact constant physics curve, continuum ($V\to\infty, a\to 0$) results for the properties of the phase transition (critical temperature, latent heat, interface tension) are given. The 3-loop correction to the effective potential of the scalar field is determined. The masses of scalar and vector excitations are determined and found to be larger in the symmetric than in the broken phase. The vector mass is considerably larger than the scalar one, which suggests a further simplification to a scalar effective theory at large Higgs masses. The use of consistent 1-loop relations between 3d parameters and 4d physics permits one to convert the 3d simulation results to quantitatively accurate numbers for different physical theories, such as the Standard Model -- excluding possible nonperturbative effects of the U(1) subgroup -- for Higgs masses up to about 70 GeV. The applications of our results to cosmology are discussed.

Results from 3D Electroweak Phase Transition Simulations

We study the phase transition in SU(2)-Higgs model on the lattice using the 3D dimensionally reduced formalism. The 3D formalism enables us to obtain highly accurate Monte Carlo results, which we extrapolate both to the infinite volume and to the continuum limit. Our formalism also provides for a well-determined and unique way to relate the results to the perturbation theory. We measure the critical temperature, latent heat and interface tension for Higgs masses up to 70 GeV.

Generic Rules for High Temperature Dimensional Reduction and Their Application to the Standard Model

We formulate the rules for dimensional reduction of a generic finite temperature gauge theory to a simpler three-dimensional effective bosonic theory in terms of a matching of Green's functions in the full and the effective theory, and present a computation of a generic set of 1- and 2-loop graphs needed for the application of these rules. As a concrete application we determine the explicit mapping of the physical parameters of the standard electroweak theory to a three-dimensional SU(2)xU(1) gauge-Higgs theory. We argue that this three-dimensional theory has a universal character and appears as an effective theory for many extensions of the Standard Model.

Exact relation of lattice and continuum parameters in three-dimensional SU(2)+Higgs theories

The essential features of the high-temperature electroweak phase transition are contained in a three-dimensional super-renormalizable effective field theory. We calculate the exact counterterms needed for lattice simulations of the SU(2)-part of this theory. Scalar fields in both fundamental and adjoint representations are included. The three-dimensional U(1)+Higgs theory is also discussed.

Supersonic Deflagrations in Cosmological Phase Transitions

The classification of the hydrodynamical growth mechanisms for the spherical bubbles of the low-temperature phase in cosmological phase transitions is completed by showing that the bubbles can grow as supersonic deflagrations. Such deflagrations consist of a Jouguet deflagration, followed by a rarefaction wave. Depending on the amount of supercooling, the maximal velocity of supersonic deflagrations varies between the sound and the light velocities. The solutions faster than supersonic deflagrations are weak detonations.

Gauge Dependence of the High-Temperature 2-Loop Effective Potential for the Higgs Field

The high-temperature limit of the 2-loop effective potential for the Higgs field is calculated from an effective 3d theory, in a general covariant gauge. It is shown explicitly that a gauge-independent result can be extracted for the equation of state from the gauge-dependent effective potential. The convergence of perturbation theory is estimated in the broken phase, utilizing the gauge dependence of the effective potential.

The 2-Loop Effective Potential of the 3d SU(2)-Higgs Model in a General Covariant Gauge

To study the convergence of the loop expansion at the high-temperature electroweak phase transition, we calculate the 2-loop effective potential of the 3d SU(2)-Higgs model in a general covariant gauge. We find that the loop expansion definitely breaks down for large $ξ$, but converges rather well for smaller values, deep in the broken phase.

Large Scale Inhomogeneities from the QCD Phase Transition

We examine the first-order cosmological QCD phase transition for a large class of parameter values, previously considered unlikely. We find that the hadron bubbles can nucleate at very large distance scales, they can grow as detonations as well as deflagrations, and that the phase transition may be completed without reheating to the critical temperature. For a subset of the parameter values studied, the inhomogeneities generated at the QCD phase transition might have a noticeable effect on nucleosynthesis.

The Growth of Bubbles in Cosmological Phase Transitions

We study how bubbles grow after the initial nucleation event in generic first-order cosmological phase transitions characterised by the values of latent heat, interface tension and correlation length, and driven by a scalar order parameter $ϕ$. Equations coupling $ϕ$ and the fluid variables $v$ and $T$ and depending on a dissipative constant $Γ$ are derived and solved numerically in the 1+1 dimensional case starting from a slightly deformed critical bubble configuration. Parameters corresponding to QCD and electroweak phase transitions are chosen and the whole history of the bubble with formation of combustion and shock fronts is computed as a function of $Γ$. Both deflagrations and detonations can appear depending on the values of the parameters. Reheating due to collisions of bubbles is also computed.

Bubble Growth as a Detonation

Bubble growth as a detonation is studied in the context of cosmological phase transitions. It is proved that the so called Chapman-Jouguet hypothesis, which restricts the types of detonations that can occur in spherically symmetric chemical burning, does not hold in the case of phase transitions. Therefore a much larger class of detonation solutions exists in phase transitions than in chemical burning.
