Motion of Curves and Surfaces and Nonlinear Evolution Equations in (2+1) Dimensions

It is shown that a class of important integrable nonlinear evolution equations in (2+1) dimensions can be associated with the motion of space curves endowed with an extra spatial variable or equivalently, moving surfaces. Geometrical invariants then define topological conserved quantities. Underlying evolution equations are shown to be associated with a triad of linear equations. Our examples include Ishimori equation and Myrzakulov equations which are shown to be geometrically equivalent to Davey-Stewartson and Zakharov -Strachan (2+1) dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations respectively.

On the simplest (2+1) dimensional integrable spin systems and their equivalent nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Using a moving space curve formalism, geometrical as well as gauge equivalence between a (2+1) dimensional spin equation (M-I equation) and the (2+1) dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) originally discovered by Calogero, discussed then by Zakharov and recently rederived by Strachan, have been estabilished. A compatible set of three linear equations are obtained and integrals of motion are discussed. Through stereographic projection, the M-I equation has been bilinearized and different types of solutions such as line and curved solitons, breaking solitons, induced dromions, and domain wall type solutions are presented. Breaking soliton solutions of (2+1) dimensional NLSE have also been reported. Generalizations of the above spin equation are discussed.

Bifurcations, Chaos, Controlling and Synchronization of Certain Nonlinear Oscillators

In this set of lectures, we review briefly some of the recent developments in the study of the chaotic dynamics of nonlinear oscillators, particularly of damped and driven type. By taking a representative set of examples such as the Duffing, Bonhoeffer-van der Pol and MLC circuit oscillators, we briefly explain the various bifurcations and chaos phenomena associated with these systems. We use numerical and analytical as well as analogue simulation methods to study these systems. Then we point out how controlling of chaotic motions can be effected by algorithmic procedures requiring minimal perturbations. Finally we briefly discuss how synchronization of identically evolving chaotic systems can be achieved and how they can be used in secure communications.

Secure Communication using Compound Signal from Generalized Synchronizable Chaotic Systems

By considering generalized synchronizable chaotic systems, the drive-auxiliary system variables are combined suitably using encryption key functions to obtain a compound chaotic signal. An appropriate feedback loop is constructed in the response-auxiliary system to achieve synchronization among the variables of the drive-auxiliary and response-auxiliary systems. We apply this approach to transmit analog and digital information signals in which the quality of the recovered signal is higher and the encoding is more secure.

Nonlinear Physics: Integrability, Chaos and Beyond

Integrability and chaos are two of the main concepts associated with nonlinear physical systems which have revolutionized our understanding of them. Highly stable exponentially localized solitons are often associated with many of the important integrable nonlinear systems while motions which are sensitively dependent on initial conditions are associated with chaotic systems. Besides dramatically raising our perception of many natural phenomena, these concepts are opening up new vistas of applications and unfolding technologies: Optical soliton based information technology, magnetoelectronics, controlling and synchronization of chaos and secure communications, to name a few. These developments have raised further new interesting questions and potentialities. We present a particular view of some of the challenging problems and payoffs ahead in the next few decades by tracing the early historical events, summarizing the revolutionary era of 1950-70 when many important new ideas including solitons and chaos were realized and reviewing the current status. Important open problems both at the basic and applied levels are discussed.

Bifurcation and chaos in the double well Duffing-van der Pol oscillator: Numerical and analytical studies

The behaviour of a driven double well Duffing-van der Pol (DVP) oscillator for a specific parametric choice ($\mid α\mid =β$) is studied. The existence of different attractors in the system parameters ($f-ω$) domain is examined and a detailed account of various steady states for fixed damping is presented. Transition from quasiperiodic to periodic motion through chaotic oscillations is reported. The intervening chaotic regime is further shown to possess islands of phase-locked states and periodic windows (including period doubling regions), boundary crisis, all the three classes of intermittencies, and transient chaos. We also observe the existence of local-global bifurcation of intermittent catastrophe type and global bifurcation of blue-sky catastrophe type during transition from quasiperiodic to periodic solutions. Using a perturbative periodic solution, an investigation of the various forms of instablities allows one to predict Neimark instablity in the $(f-ω)$ plane and eventually results in the approximate predictive criteria for the chaotic region.

Inelastic Collision and Switching of Coupled Bright Solitons in Optical Fibers

By constructing the general six-parameter bright two-soliton solution of the integrable coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation (Manakov model) using the Hirota method, we find that the solitons exhibit certain novel inelastic collision properties, which have not been observed in any other (1+1) dimensional soliton system so far. In particular, we identify the exciting possibility of switching solitons between modes by changing the phase. However, the standard elastic collision property of solitons is regained with specific choices of parameters.

A (2+1) dimensional integrable spin model: Geometrical and gauge equivalent counterpart, solitons and localized coherent structures

A non-isospectral (2+1) dimensional integrable spin equation is investigated. It is shown that its geometrical and gauge equivalent counterparts is the (2+1) dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation introduced by Zakharov and studied recently by Strachan. Using a Hirota bilinearised form, line and curved soliton solutions are obtained. Using certain freedom (arbitrariness) in the solutions of the bilinearised equation, exponentially localized dromion-like solutions for the potential is found. Also, breaking soliton solutions (for the spin variables) of the shock wave type and algebraically localized nature are constructed.
