Accurate determination of the scattering length of metastable Helium atoms using dark resonances between atoms and exotic molecules

We present a new measurement of the s-wave scattering length a of spin-polarized helium atoms in the 2^3S_1 metastable state. Using two-photon photoassociation spectroscopy and dark resonances we measure the energy E_{v=14}= -91.35 +/- 0.06 MHz of the least bound state v=14 in the interaction potential of the two atoms. We deduce a value of a = 7.512 +/- 0.005 nm, which is at least one hundred times more precise than the best previous determinations and is in disagreement with some of them. This experiment also demonstrates the possibility to create exotic molecules binding two metastable atoms with a lifetime of the order of 1 microsecond.

Frequency shifts of photoassociative spectra of ultracold metastable Helium atoms : a new measurement of the s-wave scattering length

We observe light-induced frequency shifts in one-color photoassociative spectra of magnetically trapped $^4$He$^*$ atoms in the metastable $2^3S_1$ state. A pair of ultracold spin-polarized $2^3S_1$ helium atoms is excited into a molecular bound state in the purely long range $0_u^+$ potential connected to the $2^3S_1 - 2^3P_0$ asymptote. The shift arises from the optical coupling of the molecular excited bound state with the scattering states and the bound states of two colliding $2^3S_1$ atoms. We measure the frequency-shifts for several ro-vibrational levels in the $0^+_u$ potential and find a linear dependence on the photoassociation laser intensity. Comparison with a theoretical analysis provides a good indication for the s-wave scattering length $a$ of the quintet ($^5Σ_g^+$) potential, $a=7.2\pm 0.6$ nm, which is significantly lower than most previous results obtained by non-spectroscopic methods.

Rotationally induced Penning ionization of ultracold photoassociated helium dimers

We have studied photoassociation of metastable \tripS helium atoms near the \tripS-\tripP asymptote by both ion detection in a magneto-optical trap and trap-loss measurements in a magnetic trap. A detailed comparison between the results of the two experiments gives insight into the mechanism of the Penning ionization process. We have identified four series of resonances corresponding to vibrational molecular levels belonging to different rotational states in two potentials. The corresponding spin states become quasi-purely quintet at small interatomic distance, and Penning ionization is inhibited by spin conservation rules. Only a weak rotational coupling is responsible for the contamination by singlet spin states leading to a detectable ion signal. However, for one of these series Bose statistics does not enable the rotational coupling and the series detected through trap-loss does not give rise to sufficient ionization for detection.

Prospects for measurement and control of the scattering length of metastable helium using photoassociation techniques

A numerical investigation of two-laser photoassociation (PA) spectroscopy on spin-polarized metastable helium (He*) atoms is presented within the context of experimental observation of the least-bound energy level in the scattering potential and subsequent determination of the s-wave scattering length. Starting out from the model developed by Bohn and Julienne [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{60}, (1999) 414], PA rate coefficients are obtained as a function of the parameters of the two lasers. The rate coefficients are used to simulate one- and two-laser PA spectra. The results demonstrate the feasibility of a spectroscopic determination of the binding energy of the least-bound level. The simulated spectra may be used as a guideline when designing such an experiment, whereas the model may also be employed for fitting experimentally obtained PA spectra. In addition, the prospects for substantial modification of the He* scattering length by means of optical Feshbach resonances are considered. Several experimental issues relating to the numerical investigation presented here are discussed.

Analysis of Photoassociation Spectra for Giant Helium Dimers

We perform a theoretical analysis to interpret the spectra of purely long-range helium dimers produced by photoassociation (PA) in an ultra-cold gas of metastable helium atoms. The experimental spectrum obtained with the PA laser tuned closed to the $2^3S_1\leftrightarrow 2^3P_0$ atomic line has been reported in a previous Letter. Here, we first focus on the corrections to be applied to the measured resonance frequencies in order to infer the molecular binding energies. We then present a calculation of the vibrational spectra for the purely long-range molecular states, using adiabatic potentials obtained from perturbation theory. With retardation effects taken into account, the agreement between experimental and theoretical determinations of the spectrum for the $0_u^+$ purely long-range potential well is very good. The results yield a determination of the lifetime of the $2^3P$ atomic state.

Giant Helium Dimers Produced by Photoassociation of Ultracold Metastable Atoms

We produce giant helium dimers by photoassociation of metastable helium atoms in a magnetically trapped, ultracold cloud. The photoassociation laser is detuned red of the atomic $2^3S_1 - 2^3P_0 $ line and produces strong heating of the sample when resonant with molecular bound states. The temperature of the cloud serves as an indicator of the molecular spectrum. We report good agreement between our spectroscopic measurements and our calculations of the five bound states belonging to a $0_u^+$ purely long-range potential well. These previously unobserved states have classical inner turning points of about 150 $a_0$ and outer turning points as large as 1150 $a_0$.

Hydrodynamic modes in a trapped gas of metastable helium above the Bose-Einstein transition

This article describes experiments performed with an ultracold gas of metastable helium above the Bose-Einstein transition. The gas is trapped in an harmonic magnetic potential and collective excitations are induced. Both the frequency and the damping rate of the lowest monopole-quadrupole m = 0 mode of excitation are studied at different temperatures and compared to theoretical predictions. Results indicate that the gas goes from a collisionless regime towards a hydrodynamic regime as the elastic collision rate increases, when one goes down along the evaporative cooling ramp. However we find a discrepancy for the collisional parameters in comparison with predictions relying on the value of the scattering length previously estimated. Possible explanations are put forward in the final discussion.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Metastable Helium

We have observed a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a dilute gas of $^4$He in the $2^3S_1$ metastable state. We find a critical temperature of $(4.7\pm0.5) μ$K and a typical number of atoms at the threshold of $8\times10^6$. The maximum number of atoms in our condensate is about $5\times10^5$. An approximate value for the scattering length $a=(16\pm8)$ nm is measured. The elastic collision rate is then estimated to be about $5\times10^4$ s$^{-1}$, indicating that we are deeply in the hydrodynamic regime. The typical decay time of the condensate is 2 s which places an upper bound on the rate constants for 2-body and 3-body inelastic collisions.

Penning collisions of laser-cooled metastable helium atoms

We present experimental results on the two-body loss rates in a magneto-optical trap of metastable helium atoms. Absolute rates are measured in a systematic way for several laser detunings ranging from -5 to -30 MHz and at different intensities, by monitoring the decay of the trap fluorescence. The dependence of the two-body loss rate coefficient $β$ on the excited state ($2^3P_2$) and metastable state ($2^3S_1$) populations is also investigated. From these results we infer a rather uniform rate constant $K_{sp}=(1{\pm}0.4)\times10^{-7}$ cm$^3$/s.

Efficient magneto-optical trapping of a metastable helium gas

This article presents a new experiment aiming at BEC of metastable helium atoms. It describes the design of a high flux discharge source of atoms and a robust laser system using a DBR diode coupled with a high power Yb doped fiber amplifier for manipulating the beam of metastable atoms. The atoms are trapped in a small quartz cell in an extreme high vacuum. The trapping design uses an additional laser (repumper) and allows the capture of a large number of metastable helium atoms (approximately $10^9$) in a geometry favorable for loading a tight magnetostatic trap.
