Unveiling universality, encloseness, and orthogonality in dynamics

Motivated by Sarnak's conjecture on Möbius orthogonality, we investigate the general problem of orthogonality for a bounded sequence to topological models of characteristic classes of measure-preserving automorphisms. Our main observation is that whenever a strong form of such orthogonality holds in a system $(X,T)$ then the orthogonality holds for all topological systems in which each ergodic measure yields an automorphism that is measure-theoretically isomorphic to one arising from an ergodic measure in $(X,T)$. This leads us to study two purely dynamical problems: the existence of universal topological models for characteristic classes of measure-preserving automorphisms and the existence of a common ergodic extension for a measurable family of ergodic automorphisms. We show that the class of automorphisms with relative discrete spectrum over the identity factor--as well as several related classes including the weakly mixing case--admit universal models. We also highlight potential applications to the orthogonality phenomena. Moreover, we show that if the set of all measure-theoretic eigenvalues of a zero entropy system $(X,T)$ is countable, then $(X,T)$ satisfies Sarnak's conjecture along a subsequence of full logarithmic density.

On some classification problems of multiplicative functions

We prove that a multiplicative function $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}$ is Toeplitz if and only if there are a Dirichlet character $χ$ and a finite subset $F$ of prime numbers such that $f(n)=χ(n)$ for each $n$ which is coprime to all numbers from $F$. All such functions bounded by~1 are necessarily pretentious and they have exactly one Furstenberg system. Moreover, we characterize the class of pretentious functions that have precisely one Furstenberg system as those being Besicovitch (rationally) almost periodic. As a consequence, we show that the corrected Elliott's conjecture implies Frantzikinakis-Host's conjecture on the uniqueness of Furstenberg system for all real-valued bounded by~1 multiplicative functions. We also clarify relations between different classes of aperiodic multiplicative functions.

Sarnak's Conjecture -- what's new

An overview of last seven years results concerning Sarnak's conjecture on Möbius disjointness is presented, focusing on ergodic theory aspects of the conjecture.

A generalization of Kátai's orthogonality criterion with applications

We study properties of arithmetic sets coming from multiplicative number theory and obtain applications in the theory of uniform distribution and ergodic theory. Our main theorem is a generalization of Kátai's orthogonality criterion. Here is a special case of this theorem: Let $a\colon\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}$ be a bounded sequence satisfying $$ \sum_{n\leq x} a(pn)\overline{a(qn)} = {\rm o}(x),~\text{for all distinct primes $p$ and $q$.} $$ Then for any multiplicative function $f$ and any $z\in\mathbb{C}$ the indicator function of the level set $E=\{n\in\mathbb{N}:f(n)=z\}$ satisfies $$ \sum_{n\leq x} \mathbb{1}_E(n)a(n)={\rm o}(x). $$ With the help of this theorem one can show that if $E=\{n_1 0$ with $c\notin \mathbb{N}$, $\log^r(t)$ for any $r>2$, $\log(Γ(t))$, $t\log(t)$, and $\frac{t}{\log t}$. The uniform distribution results, in turn, allow us to obtain new examples of ergodic sequences, i.e. sequences along which the ergodic theorem holds.

Substitutions and Möbius disjointness

We show that Sarnak's conjecture on Möbius disjointness holds for all subshifts given by bijective substitutions and some other similar dynamical systems, e.g.\ those generated by Rudin-Shapiro type sequences.

Rigidity and Non-recurrence along Sequences

Two properties of a dynamical system, rigidity and non-recurrence, are examined in detail. The ultimate aim is to characterize the sequences along which these properties do or do not occur for different classes of transformations. The main focus in this article is to characterize explicitly the structural properties of sequences which can be rigidity sequences or non-recurrent sequences for some weakly mixing dynamical system. For ergodic transformations generally and for weakly mixing transformations in particular there are both parallels and distinctions between the class of rigid sequences and the class of non-recurrent sequences. A variety of classes of sequences with various properties are considered showing the complicated and rich structure of rigid and non-recurrent sequences.
