Routes towards Anderson-Like localization of Bose-Einstein condensates in disordered optical lattices

We investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, possible routes towards Anderson-like localization of Bose-Einstein condensates in disordered potentials. The dependence of this quantum interference effect on the nonlinear interactions and the shape of the disorder potential is investigated. Experiments with an optical lattice and a superimposed disordered potential reveal the lack of Anderson localization. A theoretical analysis shows that this absence is due to the large length scale of the disorder potential as well as its screening by the nonlinear interactions. Further analysis shows that incommensurable superlattices should allow for the observation of the cross-over from the nonlinear screening regime to the Anderson localized case within realistic experimental parameters.

Spin squeezing inequalities and entanglement of $N$ qubit states

We derive spin squeezing inequalities that generalize the concept of the spin squeezing parameter and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for genuine 2-, or 3- qubit entanglement for symmetric states, and sufficient condition for general states of $N$ qubits. Our inequalities have a clear physical interpretation as entanglement witnesses, can be relatively easy measured, and are given by complex, but {\it elementary} expressions.

Atomic Fermi gas in the trimerized Kagomé lattice at the filling 2/3

We study low temperature properties of an atomic spinless interacting Fermi gas in the trimerized Kagomé lattice for the case of two fermions per trimer. The system is described by a quantum spin 1/2 model on the triangular lattice with couplings depending on bonds directions. Using exact diagonalizations we show that the system exhibits non-standard properties of a {\it quantum spin-liquid crystal}, combining a planar antiferromagnetic order with an exceptionally large number of low energy excitations.

Disordered ultracold atomic gases in optical lattices: A case study of Fermi-Bose mixtures

We present a review of properties of ultracold atomic Fermi-Bose mixtures in inhomogeneous and random optical lattices. In the strong interacting limit and at very low temperatures, fermions form, together with bosons or bosonic holes, {\it composite fermions}. Composite fermions behave as a spinless interacting Fermi gas, and in the presence of local disorder they interact via random couplings and feel effective random local potential. This opens a wide variety of possibilities of realizing various kinds of ultracold quantum disordered systems. In this paper we review these possibilities, discuss the accessible quantum disordered phases, and methods for their detection. The discussed quantum phases include Fermi glasses, quantum spin glasses, "dirty" superfluids, disordered metallic phases, and phases involving quantum percolation.

Fermi-Dirac statistics and the number theory

We relate the Fermi-Dirac statistics of an ideal Fermi gas in a harmonic trap to partitions of given integers into distinct parts, studied in number theory. Using methods of quantum statistical physics we derive analytic expressions for cumulants of the probability distribution of the number of different partitions.

Sympathetic cooling of trapped fermions by bosons in the presence of particle losses

We study the sympathetic cooling of a trapped Fermi gas interacting with an ideal Bose gas below the critical temperature of the Bose-Einstein condensation. We derive the quantum master equation, which describes the dynamics of the fermionic component, and postulating the thermal distribution for both gases we calculate analytically the rate at which fermions are cooled by the bosonic atoms. The particle losses constitute an important source of heating of the degenerate Fermi gas. We evaluate the rate of loss-induced heating and derive analytical results for the final temperature of fermions, which is limited in the presence of particle losses.

Bound-state corrections in laser-induced nonsequential double ionization

We perform a systematic analysis of how nonsequential double ionization in intense, linearly polarized laser fields is influenced by the initial states in which both electrons are bound, and by the residual ionic potential. We assume that the second electron is released by electron-impact ionization of the first electron with its parent ion, using an S-Matrix approach. We work within the Strong-Field Approximation, and compute differential electron momentum distributions using saddle-point methods. Specifically, we consider electrons in $1s$, $2p$, $3p$ and localized states, which are released by either a contact or a Coulomb-type interaction. We also perform an adequate treatment of the bound-state singularity which is present in this framework. We show that the momentum distributions are very sensitive with respect to spatially extended or localized wave functions, but are not considerably influenced by their shape. Furthermore, the modifications performed in order to overcome the bound-state singularity do not significantly alter the momentum distributions, apart from a minor suppression in the region of small momenta. The only radical changes occur if one employs effective form factors, which take into account the presence of the residual ion upon rescattering. If the ionic potential is of contact type, it outweighs the spreading caused by a long-range electron-electron interaction, or by spatially extended bound states. This leads to momentum distributions which exhibit a very good agreement with the existing experiments.

One- and two-dimensional quantum walks in arrays of optical traps

We propose a novel implementation of discrete time quantum walks for a neutral atom in an array of optical microtraps or an optical lattice. We analyze a one-dimensional walk in position space, with the coin, the additional qubit degree of freedom that controls the displacement of the quantum walker, implemented as a spatially delocalized qubit, i.e., the coin is also encoded in position space. We analyze the dependence of the quantum walk on temperature and experimental imperfections as shaking in the trap positions. Finally, combining a spatially delocalized qubit and a hyperfine qubit, we also give a scheme to realize a quantum walk on a two-dimensional square lattice with the possibility of implementing different coin operators.

Hilbert's 17th problem and the quantumness of states

A state of a quantum systems can be regarded as {\it classical} ({\it quantum}) with respect to measurements of a set of canonical observables iff there exists (does not exist) a well defined, positive phase space distribution, the so called Galuber-Sudarshan $P$-representation. We derive a family of classicality criteria that require that averages of positive functions calculated using $P$-representation must be positive. For polynomial functions, these criteria are related to 17-th Hilbert's problem, and have physical meaning of generalized squeezing conditions; alternatively, they may be interpreted as {\it non-classicality witnesses}. We show that every generic non-classical state can be detected by a polynomial that is a sum of squares of other polynomials (sos). We introduce a very natural hierarchy of states regarding their degree of quantumness, which we relate to the minimal degree of a sos polynomial that detects them is introduced. Polynomial non-classicality witnesses can be directly measured.

Relations between Entanglement Witnesses and Bell Inequalities

Bell inequalities, considered within quantum mechanics, can be regarded as non-optimal witness operators. We discuss the relationship between such Bell witnesses and general entanglement witnesses in detail for the Bell inequality derived by Clauser, Horne, Shimony, and Holt (CHSH). We derive bounds on how much an optimal witness has to be shifted by adding the identity operator to make it positive on all states admitting a local hidden variable model. In the opposite direction, we obtain tight bounds for the maximal proportion of the identity operator that can be subtracted from such a CHSH witness, while preserving the witness properties. Finally, we investigate the structure of CHSH witnesses directly by relating their diagonalized form to optimal witnesses of two different classes.

Cold atoms in non-Abelian gauge potentials: From the Hofstadter "moth" to lattice gauge theory

We demonstrate how to create artificial external non-Abelian gauge potentials acting on cold atoms in optical lattices. The method employs $n$ internal states of atoms and laser assisted state sensitive tunneling. Thus, dynamics are communicated by unitary $n\times n$-matrices. By experimental control of the tunneling parameters, the system can be made truly non-Abelian. We show that single particle dynamics in the case of intense U(2) vector potentials lead to a generalized Hofstadter butterfly spectrum which shows a complex ``moth''-like structure. We discuss the possibility to employ non-Abelian interferometry (Aharonov-Bohm effect) and address methods to realize matter dynamics in specific classes of lattice gauge fields.

Entanglement in spin chains and lattices with long-range Ising-type interactions

We consider N initially disentangled spins, embedded in a ring or d-dimensional lattice of arbitrary geometry, which interact via some long--range Ising--type interaction. We investigate relations between entanglement properties of the resulting states and the distance dependence of the interaction in the limit N to infinity. We provide a sufficient condition when bipartite entanglement between blocks of L neighboring spins and the remaining system saturates, and determine S_L analytically for special configurations. We find an unbounded increase of S_L as well as diverging correlation and entanglement length under certain circumstances. For arbitrarily large N, we can efficiently calculate all quantities associated with reduced density operators of up to ten particles.

BCS pairing in a trapped dipolar Fermi gase

We present a detailed study of the BCS pairing transition in a trapped polarized dipolar Fermi gas. In the case of a shallow nearly spherical trap, we find the decrease of the transition temperature as a function of the trap aspect ratio and predict the existence of the optimal trap geometry. The latter corresponds to the highest critical temperature of the BCS transition for a given number of particles. We also derive the phase diagram for an ultracold trapped dipolar Fermi gases in the situation, where the trap frequencies can be of the order of the critical temperature of the BCS transition in the homogeneous case, and find the critical value of the dipole-dipole interaction energy, below which the BCS transition ceases to exist. The critical dipole strength is obtained as a function of the trap aspect ratio. Alternatively, for a given dipole strength there is a critical value of the trap anisotropy for the BCS state to appear. The order parameter calculated at criticality, exhibits nover non-monotonic behavior resulted from the combined effect of the confining potential and anisotropic character of the interparticle dipole-dipole interation.

Entanglement in the Bogoliubov vacuum

We analyze the entanglement properties of the Bogoliubov vacuum, which is obtained as a second order approximation to the ground state of an interacting Bose--Einstein condensate. We work on one and two dimensional lattices and study the entanglement between two groups of lattice sites as a function of the geometry of the configuration and the strength of the interactions. As our measure of entanglement we use the logarithmic negativity, supplemented by an algorithmic check for bound entanglement where appropriate. The short-range entanglement is found to grow approximately linearly with the group sizes and to be favored by strong interactions. Conversely, long range entanglement is favored by relatively weak interactions. Working with periodic boundary conditions we find some surprising finite size effects for the very long range entanglement. No examples of bound entanglement is found.

Key distillation from Gaussian states by Gaussian operations

We study the secrecy properties of Gaussian states under Gaussian operations. Although such operations are useless for quantum distillation, we prove that it is possible to distill a secret key secure against any attack from sufficiently entangled Gaussian states with non-positive partial transposition. Moreover, all such states allow for key distillation, when Eve is assumed to perform finite-size coherent attacks before the reconciliation process.

Classical and quantum-mechanical treatments of nonsequential double ionization with few-cycle laser pulses

We address nonsequential double ionization induced by strong, linearly polarized laser fields of only a few cycles, considering a physical mechanism in which the second electron is dislodged by the inelastic collision of the first electron with its parent ion. The problem is treated classically, using an ensemble model, and quantum-mechanically, within the strong-field and uniform saddle-point approximations. In the latter case, the results are interpreted in terms of "quantum orbits", which can be related to the trajectories of a classical electron in an electric field. We obtain highly asymmetric electron momentum distributions, which strongly depend on the absolute phase, i.e., on the phase difference between the pulse envelope and its carrier frequency. Around a particular value of this parameter, the distributions shift from the region of positive to that of negative momenta, or vice-versa, in a radical fashion. This behavior is investigated in detail for several driving-field parameters, and provides a very efficient method for measuring the absolute phase. Both models yield very similar distributions, which share the same physical explanation. There exist, however, minor discrepancies due to the fact that, beyond the region for which electron-impact ionization is classically allowed, the yields from the quantum mechanical computation decay exponentially, whereas their classical counterparts vanish.

Mean-field theory of Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices

We determine the phase diagram of a mixture of ultracold bosons and polarized fermions placed in an optical lattice using mean field theory. In the limit of strong atom-atom interactions, there exist quantum phases that involve pairing of fermions with one or more bosons, or bosonic holes, respectively. We obtain the analytic form of the phase boundaries separating these composite fermion phases from the bosonic superfluid coexisting with Fermi liquid. We compare the results with numerical simulations and discuss their validity and relevance for current experiments.

Fractional Quantum Hall States in Ultracold Rapidly Rotating Dipolar Fermi Gases

We demonstrate the experimental feasibility of incompressible fractional quantum Hall-like states in ultra-cold two dimensional rapidly rotating dipolar Fermi gases. In particular, we argue that the state of the system at filling fraction $ν=1/3$ is well-described by the Laughlin wave function and find a substantial energy gap in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum. Dipolar gases, therefore, appear as natural candidates of systems that allow to realize these very interesting highly correlated states in future experiments.
