Non-Hermitian Topology of a Subwavelength Resonator in Synthetic Space

Non-Hermitian singularities and the nontrivial topology of energy bands have been extensively explored in extended periodic systems, where phenomena such as exceptional points and bulk Fermi arcs are naturally associated with periodicity and momentum space. Here, we show that this non-Hermitian topology can be extended to the domain of subwavelength resonators using a synthetic space. By reconstructing the complex energy bands of a subwavelength ring resonator in the synthetic space of geometrical parameters, we experimentally observe a spectral triplet formed by two exceptional points (EPs) connected by a bulk Fermi arc and a topologically robust quasi-bound state in the continuum (q-BIC). This Fermi-arc q-BIC emerges exactly at the intersection of the bulk Fermi arc and the q-BIC line in synthetic space, establishing a direct topological link between two spectral singularities. Encircling the EPs in synthetic space visualizes the nontrivial topology of the complex energy-band structure and reveals the opposite half-integer topological charges of the EPs connected by the bulk Fermi arc. These results extend non-Hermitian topology to subwavelength structures and establish compact resonators as a versatile platform for applications in photonics, microwave physics, and acoustics.

Experimental observation of bulk Fermi arc in single dielectric resonator

The bulk Fermi arc is a fundamental non-Hermitian topological feature that connects two exceptional points (EPs), featuring the transition between Hermitian and non-Hermitian worlds. The bulk Fermi arc emerges when losses are introduced into a Hermitian system, causing a Dirac point to split into two EPs, where both the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions coalesce. Although theoretically predicted in various systems, experimental confirmation has been limited to a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab. Here, we present the first experimental observation of a bulk Fermi arc in a single dielectric resonator. Specifically, we consider a ring resonator made of high-refractive index ceramic. The inner radius and height are varied, enabling the observation of a two-sheeted Riemann surface with two EPs connected by a bulk Fermi arc, confirmed through numerical calculations and experimentally measured extinction spectra at GHz frequencies. These results establish dielectric resonators as a powerful platform for investigating non-Hermitian topological physics and open new avenues for designing topologically robust photonic devices and EP-based sensors.

Raman study of carrier-overdoping effects on the gap in high-Tc superconducting cuprates

Raman scattering in the heavily overdoped (Y,Ca)Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-d} (T_c = 65 K) and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+d} (T_c = 55 K) crystals has been investigated. For the both crystals, the electronic pair-breaking peaks in the A_{1g} and B_{1g} polarizations were largely shifted to the low energies close to a half of 2Delta_0, Delta_0 being the maximum gap. It strongly suggests s-wave mixing into the d-wave superconducting order parameter and the consequent manifestation of the Coulomb screening effect in the B_{1g}-channel. Gradual mixing of s-wave component with overdoping is not due to the change of crystal structure symmetry but a generic feature in all high-T_c superconducting cuprates.
