Thermal nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in the real time formalism

The real-time formalism at finite temperature and chemical potential for the nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model is developed in the presence of a Gaussian covariant regulator. We construct the most general thermal propagator, by means of the spectral function. As a result, the model involves the propagation of massive quasiparticles. The appearance of complex poles is interpreted as a confinement signal, and in this case we have unstable quasiparticles with a finite decay width. An expression for the propagator along the critical line, where complex poles start to appear, is also obtained. A generalization to other covariant regulators is proposed.

Observability of an induced electric dipole moment of the neutron from nonlinear QED

It has been shown recently that a neutron placed in an external quasistatic electric field develops an induced electric dipole moment $\mathbf{p}_{\mathrm{IND}}$ due to quantum fluctuations in the QED vacuum. A feasible experiment which could detect such an effect is proposed and described here. It is shown that the peculiar angular dependence of $\mathbf{p}_{\mathrm{IND}}$ on the orientation of the neutron spin leads to a characteristic asymmetry in polarized neutron scattering by heavy nuclei. This asymmetry can be of the order of $10^{-3}$ for neutrons with epithermal energies. For thermalized neutrons from a hot moderator one still expects experimentally accessible values of the order of $10^{-4}$. The contribution of the induced effect to the neutron scattering length is expected to be only one order of magnitude smaller than that due to the neutron polarizability from its quark substructure. The experimental observation of this scattering asymmetry would be the first ever signal of nonlinearity in electrodynamics due to quantum fluctuations in the QED vacuum.

(Pseudo)Scalar Charmonium in Finite Temperature QCD

The hadronic parameters of pseudoscalar ($η_c$) and scalar ($χ_c$) charmonium are determined at finite temperature from Hilbert moment QCD sum rules. These parameters are the hadron mass, leptonic decay constant, total width, and continuum threshold ($s_0$). Results for $s_0(T)$ in both channels indicate that $s_0(T)$ starts approximately constant, and then it decreases monotonically with increasing $T$ until it reaches the QCD threshold, $s_{th} = 4 m_Q^2$, at a critical temperature $T = T_c \simeq 180 \; \mbox{MeV}$ interpreted as the deconfinement temperature. The other hadronic parameters behave qualitatively similarly to those of the $J/ψ$, as determined in this same framework. The hadron mass is essentially constant, the total width is initially independent of T, and after $T/T_c \simeq 0.80$ it begins to increase with increasing $T$ up to $T/T_c \simeq 0.90 \; (0.95)$ for $χ_c$ ($η_c$), and subsequently it decreases sharply up to $T \simeq 0.94 \; (0.99) \; T_c$, for $χ_c$ ($η_c$), beyond which the sum rules are no longer valid. The decay constant of $χ_c$ at first remains basically flat up to $T \simeq 0.80\; T_c$, then it starts to decrease up to $T \simeq 0.90 \;T_c$, and finally it increases sharply with increasing $T$. In the case of $η_c$ the decay constant does not change up to $T \simeq 0.80 \;T_c$ where it begins a gentle increase up to $T \simeq 0.95 \;T_c$ beyond which it increases dramatically with increasing $T$. This behaviour contrasts with that of light-light and heavy-light quark systems, and it suggests the survival of the $η_c$ and the $χ_c$ states beyond the critical temperature, as already found for the $J/ψ$ from similar QCD sum rules. These conclusions are very stable against changes in the critical temperature in the wide range $T_c = 180 - 260 \; \mbox{MeV}$.

QCD sum rules and thermal properties of Charmonium in the vector channel

The thermal evolution of the hadronic parameters of charmonium in the vector channel, i.e. the J/psi resonance mass, coupling (leptonic decay constant), total width, and continuum threshold is analyzed in the framework of thermal Hilbert moment QCD sum rules. The continuum threshold $s_0$, as in other hadronic channels, decreases with increasing temperature until the PQCD threshold s_0 = 4, m_Q^2 is reached at T \simeq 1.22T_c (m_Q is the charm quark mass) and the J/psi mass is essentially constant in a wide range of temperatures. The other hadronic parameters behave in a very different way from those of light-light and heavy-light quark systems. The total width grows with temperature up to T \simeq 1.04T_c beyond which it decreases sharply with increasing T. The resonance coupling is also initially constant beginning to increase monotonically around T \simeq T_c. This behavior strongly suggests that the J/psi resonance might survive beyond the critical temperature for deconfinement, in agreement with lattice QCD results.

Charmonium in the vector channel at finite temperature from QCD sum rules

Thermal Hilbert moment QCD sum rules are used to obtain the temperature dependence of the hadronic parameters of charmonium in the vector channel, i.e. the $J$ / $ψ$ resonance mass, coupling (leptonic decay constant), total width, and continuum threshold. The continuum threshold $s_0$, which signals the end of the resonance region and the onset of perturbative QCD (PQCD), behaves as in all other hadronic channels, i.e. it decreases with increasing temperature until it reaches the PQCD threshold $s_0 = 4 m_Q^2$, with $m_Q$ the charm quark mass, at $T\simeq 1.22 T_c$. The rest of the hadronic parameters behave very differently from those of light-light and heavy-light quark systems. The $J$ / $ψ$ mass is essentially constant in a wide range of temperatures, while the total width grows with temperature up to $T \simeq 1.04 T_c$ beyond which it decreases sharply with increasing T. The resonance coupling is also initially constant and then begins to increase monotonically around $T \simeq T_c$. This behaviour of the total width and of the leptonic decay constant provides a strong indication that the $J$ / $ψ$ resonance might survive beyond the critical temperature for deconfinement.

QED vacuum fluctuations and induced electric dipole moment of the neutron

Quantum fluctuations in the QED vacuum generate non-linear effects, such as peculiar induced electromagnetic fields. In particular, we show here that an electrically neutral particle, possessing a magnetic dipole moment, develops an induced electric dipole-type moment with unusual angular dependence, when immersed in a quasistatic, constant external electric field. The calculation of this effect is done in the framework of the Euler-Heisenberg effective QED Lagrangian, corresponding to the weak field asymptotic expansion of the effective action to one-loop order. It is argued that the neutron might be a good candidate to probe this signal of non-linearity in QED.

Electromagnetic and Scalar Pion form factor in the Kroll-Lee-Zumino model

The renormalizable Abelian quantum field theory model of Kroll, Lee, and Zumino is used at the one loop level to compute vertex corrections to the tree-level, Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) electromagnetic pion form factor. These corrections, together with the one-loop vacuum polarization contribution, imply a resulting electromagnetic pion form factor in excellent agreement with data in the whole range of accessible momentum transfers in the space-like region. The time-like form factor, which reproduces the Gounaris-Sakurai formula at and near the rho-meson peak, is unaffected by the vertex correction at order $\cal{O}$$(g^2)$. The KLZ model is also used to compute the scalar radius of the pion at the one loop level, finding $ _{S} = 0.40 fm^{2}$. This value implies for the low energy constant of chiral perturbation theory $\bar{l}_{4} =3.4$.

Considerations about Gribov ambiguities for the abelian Higgs model in the presence of chemical potential and temperature

In this letter we discuss the influence of a U(1) chemical potential $μ$ on the existence of Gribov copies in a U(1) theory at finite temperature $T$. We show that the chemical potential conspires against the existence of Gribov copies in the sense that it restricts the space of solutions of the consistency equation for the gauge parameter. Explicit solutions are found for T=0, as function of $μ$. In the finite temperature case we find also a class of solutions which satisfy the KMS boundary conditions in the euclidean time direction, having also a vanishing behavior when $|\mathbf r|\to\infty$

Induced electromagnetic fields in non-linear QED

The Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian is used to obtain general expressions for electric and magnetic fields induced by non-linearity, to leading order in the non-linear expansion parameter, and for quasistatic situations. These expressions are then used to compute the induced electromagnetic fields due to a spherical shell with uniform charge distribution on the surface, in the presence of an external constant magnetic field. The induced electric field contains several multipole terms with unusual angular dependences. Most importantly, the leading term of the induced magnetic field is due to an induced magnetic dipole moment.

Scalar radius of the pion in the Kroll-Lee-Zumino renormalizable theory

The Kroll-Lee-Zumino renormalizable Abelian quantum field theory of pions and a massive rho-meson is used to calculate the scalar radius of the pion at next to leading (one loop) order in perturbation theory. Due to renormalizability, this determination involves no free parameters. The result is $ _s = 0.40 {fm}^2$. This value gives for $\bar{\ell}_4$, the low energy constant of chiral perturbation theory, $\bar{\ell}_4 = 3.4$, and $F_π/F = 1.05$, where F is the pion decay constant in the chiral limit. Given the level of accuracy in the masses and the $ρππ$ coupling, the only sizable uncertainty in this result is due to the (uncalculated) NNLO contribution.

Thermal Behaviour of $π-π$ Scattering Lengths in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We calculate the thermal evolution of $π-π$ scattering lengths, in the frame of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The thermal corrections were calculated at the one loop level using Thermofield Dynamics. We present also results for the pion thermal mass. Our procedure implies the modeling of a propagating scalar meson as a resumation of chains of quark bubbles, which is presented explicitly. We compare our results with previous analysis of this problem in the frame of different theoretical approaches.

Heavy-light quark pseudoscalar and vector mesons at finite temperature

The temperature dependence of the mass, leptonic decay constant, and width of heavy-light quark peseudoscalar and vector mesons is obtained in the framework of thermal Hilbert moment QCD sum rules. The leptonic decay constants of both pseudoscalar and vector mesons decrease with increasing $T$, and vanish at a critical temperature $T_c$, while the mesons develop a width which increases dramatically and diverges at $T_c$, where $T_c$ is the temperature for chiral-symmetry restoration. These results indicate the disappearance of hadrons from the spectral function, which then becomes a smooth function of the energy. This is interpreted as a signal for deconfinement at $T=T_c$. In contrast, the masses show little dependence on the temperature, except very close to $T_c$, where the pseudoscalar meson mass increases slightly by 10-20 %, and the vector meson mass decreases by some 20-30 %

Gauge dependence ambiguity and chemical potential in thermal U(1) theory

In this letter we explore the dependence on the gauge fixing condition of several quantities in the U(1) Higgs model at finite temperature and chemical potential. We compute the effective potential at the one loop level, using a gauge fixing condition that depends on $μ$ and which allows to decouple the contributions of the different fields in the model. In this way we get the mass spectrum and the characterization of the phase transition, pointing out in each case how these quantities depend on the gauge fixing parameter $ξ$. When $μ$ vanishes, we agree with previous results if $ξ=0$. The gauge dependence problem is also analyzed from the perspective of the Nielsen identities.

Isospin Chemical potential and temperature effects in the Linear Sigma Model

In this letter we explore the temperature and isospin chemical potential ($μ_I$) dependence of the vacuum structure and the meson masses in the linear sigma model, at the one loop level. The sigma meson mass grows steadily with temperature. This behavior does not agree with previous mean field calculations. For the pion our results show the same behavior as the mean field approach. The stability of the vacuum has a very soft dependence on $μ_I$ since this is a second order effect in the tadpole diagrams.

Chemical potential as a source of stability for gravitating Skyrmions

A discussion of the stability of self gravitating Skyrmions, with a large winding number N, in a Schwarzschild type of metric, is presented for the case where an isospin chemical potential is introduced. It turns out that the chemical potential stabilizes the behavior of the Skyrmion discussed previously in the literature. This analysis is carried on in the framework of a variational approach using different ansaetze for the radial profile of the Skyrmion. We found a divergent behavior for the size of the Skyrmion, associated to a certain critical value $μ_c$ of the chemical potential. At this point, the mass of the Skyrmion vanishes. $μ_c$ is essentialy independent of gravitating effects. The stability of a large N skyrmion against decays into single particles is also discussed.

Hadrons as Skyrmions in the presence of isospin chemical potential

The stability of the Skyrmion solution in the presence of finite isospin chemical potential $μ$ is considered, showing the existence of a critical value $μ_{c} = 222.8$ MeV where the Skyrmion mass vanishes. Using the Hamiltonian formulation, in terms of collective variables, we discuss the behavior of different skyrmionic parameters as function of the isospin chemical potential ($μ$), such as the energy density, the isoscalar radius and the isoscalar magnetic radius. We found that the radii start to grow very fast for $μ\geq 140$ MeV, suggesting the occurrence of a phase transition.

Background field method at finite temperature and density

In this letter we make use of the Background Field Method (BFM) to compute the effective potential of an SU(2) gauge field theory, in the presence of chemical potential and temperature. The main idea is to consider the chemical potential as the background field. The gauge fixing condition required by the BFM turns out to be exactly the one we found in a previous article in a different context.
