Discrete Quantum Gravity: II. Simplicial complexes, irreps of SL(2,C), and a Lorentz invariant weight in a state sum model

In part I of [1] we have developed the tensor and spin representation of SO(4) in order to apply it to the simplicial decomposition of the Barrett-Crane model. We attach to each face of a triangle the spherical function constructed from the Dolginov-Biedenharn function. In part II we apply the same technique to the Lorentz invariant state sum model. We need three new ingredients: the classification of the edges and the corresponding subspaces that arises in the simplicial decomposition, the irreps of SL(2,C) and its isomorphism to the bivectors appearing in the 4-simplices, the need of a zonal spherical function from the intertwining condition of the tensor product for the simple representations attached to the faces of the simplicial decomposition.

Discrete Quantum Gravity: I. Zonal spherical functions of the representationsof the SO(4,R) group with respect to the SU(2) subgroup and their application to the Barrett-Crane model

Starting from the defining transformations of complex matrices for the $SO(4,R)$ group, we construct the fundamental representation and the tensor and spinor representations of the group $SO(4,R)$. Given the commutation relations for the corresponding algebra, the unitary representations of the group in terms of the generalized Euler angles are constructed. The crucial step for the Barrett-Crane model in Quantum Gravity is the description of the amplitude for the quantum 4-simplex that is used in the state sum partition function. We obtain the zonal spherical functions for the construction of the SO(4,R) invariant weight and associate them to the triangular faces of the 4-simplices.

Spin networks in quantum gravity

This is a review paper about one of the approaches to unify Quantum Mechanics and the theory of General Relativity. Starting from the pioneer work of Regge and Penrose other scientists have constructed state sum models, as Feymann path integrals, that are topological invariant on the triangulated Riemannian surfaces, and that in the continuous limit become the Hilbert-Einstein action.

A combinatorial approach to discrete geometry

We present a paralell approach to discrete geometry: the first one introduces Voronoi cell complexes from statistical tessellations in order to know the mean scalar curvature in term of the mean number of edges of a cell. The second one gives the restriction of a graph from a regular tessellation in order to calculate the curvature from pure combinatorial properties of the graph. Our proposal is based in some epistemological pressupositions: the macroscopic continuous geometry is only a fiction, very usefull for describing phenomena at certain sacales, but it is only an approximation to the true geometry. In the discrete geometry one starts from a set of elements and the relation among them without presuposing space and time as a background.

A discrete curvature on a planar graph

Given a planar graph derived from a spherical, euclidean or hyperbolic tessellation, one can define a discrete curvature by combinatorial properties, which after embedding the graph in a compact 2d-manifold, becomes the Gaussian curvature.

Discrete quantum gravity: the Lorentz invariant weight for the Barrett-Crane model

In a recent paper [1] we have constructed the spin and tensor representations of SO(4) from which the invariant weight can be derived for the Barrett-Crane model in quantum gravity. By analogy with the SO(4) group, we present the complexified Clebsch-Gordan coefficients in order to construct the Biedenharn-Dolginov function for the SO(3,1) group and the spherical function as the Lorentz invariant weight of the model.

Tensor and spin representations of SO(4) and discrete quantum gravity

Starting from the defining transformations of complex matrices for the SO(4) group, we construct the fundamental representation and the tensor and spinor representations of the group SO(4). Given the commutation relations for the corresponding algebra, the unitary representations of the group in terms of the generalized Euler angles are constructed. These mathematical results help us to a more complete description of the Barrett-Crane model in Quantum Gravity. In particular a complete realization of the weight function for the partition function is given and a new geometrical itnerpretation of the asymptotic limit for the Regge action is presented.

Raising and lowering operators and their factorization for generalized orthogonal polynomials of hypergeometric type on homogeneous and non-homogeneous lattice

We complete the construction of raising and lowering operators, given in a previous work, for the orthogonal polynomials of hypergeometric type on non-homogeneous lattice, and extend these operators to the generalized orthogonal polynomials, namely, those difference of orthogonal polynomials that satisfy a similar difference equation of hypergeometric type.

Orthogonal polynomials, special functions and mathematical physics

In the 6th Int. Symposium on OPSFA there were several communications dealing with concrete applications of orthogonal polynomials to experimental and theoretical physics, chemistry, biology and statistics. Here I make suggestions concerning the use of powerful apparatus of orthogonal polynomials and special functions in several lines of research in mathematical physics

Surface embedding, topology and dualization for spin networks

Spin networks are graphs derived from 3nj symbols of angular momentum. The surface embedding, the topology and dualization of these networks are considered. Embeddings into compact surfaces include the orientable sphere S^2 and the torus T, and the not orientable projective space P^2 and Klein's bottle K. Two families of 3nj graphs admit embeddings of minimal genus into S^2 and P^2. Their dual 2-skeletons are shown to be triangulations of these surfaces.

The double torus as a 2D cosmos: groups, geometry and closed geodesics

The double torus provides a relativistic model for a closed 2D cosmos with topology of genus 2 and constant negative curvature. Its unfolding into an octagon extends to an octagonal tessellation of its universal covering, the hyperbolic space H^2. The tessellation is analysed with tools from hyperbolic crystallography. Actions on H^2 of groups/subgroups are identified for SU(1, 1), for a hyperbolic Coxeter group acting also on SU(1, 1), and for the homotopy group Φ_2 whose extension is normal in the Coxeter group. Closed geodesics arise from links on H^2 between octagon centres. The direction and length of the shortest closed geodesics is computed.

Continuous vs. discrete models for the quantum harmonic oscillator and the hydrogen atom

The Kravchuk and Meixner polynomials of discrete variable are introduced for the discrete models of the harmonic oscillator and hydrogen atom. Starting from Rodrigues formula we construct raising and lowering operators, commutation and anticommutation relations. The physical properties of discrete models are figured out through the equivalence with the continuous models obtained by limit process.

Some Integrable Quantum Systems on the Lattice

The Weyl relations, the harmonic oscillator, the hydrogen atom, the Dirac equation on the lattice are presented with the help of the difference equations and the orthogonal polynomials of discrete variable. This area of research is attracting more interest due to the lattice field theories and the hypothesis of a finite space.

Raising and lowering operators, factorization and differential/difference operators of hypergeometric type

Starting from Rodrigues formula we present a general construction of raising and lowering operators for orthogonal polynomials of continuous and discrete variable on uniform lattice. In order to have these operators mutually adjoint we introduce orthonormal functions with respect to the scalar product of unit weight. Using the Infeld-Hull factorization method, we generate from the raising and lowering operators the second order self-adjoint differential/difference operator of hypergeometric type.

Representations of the discrete inhomogeneous Lorentz group and Dirac wave equation on the lattice

We propose the fundamental and two dimensional representation of the Lorentz groups on a (3+1)-dimensional hypercubic lattice, from which representations of higher dimensions can be constructed. For the unitary representation of the discrete translation group we use the kernel of the Fourier transform. From the Dirac representation of the Lorentz group (including reflections) we derive in a natural way the wave equation on the lattice for spin 1/2 particles. Finally the induced representation of the discrete inhomogeneous Lorentz group is constructed by standard methods and its connection with the continuous case is discussed.

Exact solutions of the Dirac equation and induced representations of the Poincare group on the lattice

We deduce the structure of the Dirac field on the lattice from the discrete version of differential geometry and from the representation of the integral Lorentz transformations. The analysis of the induced representations of the Poincare group on the lattice reveals that they are reducible, a result that can be considered a group theoretical approach to the problem of fermion doubling.
