Diffractive dissociation and saturation scale from non-linear evolution in high energy DIS

This paper presents the first numerical solution to the non-linear evolution equation for diffractive dissociation processes in deep inelastic scattering. It is shown that the solution depends on one scaling variable $τ= Q^2/Q^{D 2}_s(x,x_0)$, where $Q^D_s(x,x_0)$ is the saturation scale for the diffraction processes. The dependence of the saturation scale $Q^D_s(x,x_0)$ on both $x$ and $x_0$ is investigated, ($Y_0 = \ln(1/x_0)$ is a minimal rapidity gap for the diffraction process). The $x$ - dependence of $Q^D_s$ turns out to be the same as of the saturation scale in the total inclusive DIS cross section. In our calculations $Q^D_s(x,x_0)$ reveals only mild dependence on $x_0$. The scaling is shown to hold for $x \ll x_0$ but is violated at $ x \sim x_0$.

Scaling phenomena from non-linear evolution in high energy DIS

The numerical solutions of the non-linear evolution equation are shown to display the ``geometric'' scaling recently discovered in the experimental data. The phenomena hold both for proton and nucleus targets for all $x$ below $10^{-2}$ and $0.25 {\rm GeV^{2}}\le Q^2 \le 2.5\times10^3 {\rm GeV^{2}}$. The scaling is practically exact (few percent error) in the saturation region. In addition, an approximate scaling is found in the validity domain of the linear evolution where it holds with about 10% accuracy. Basing on the scaling phenomena we determine the saturation scale $Q_s(x)$ and study both its $x$-dependence and the atomic number dependence for the nuclei.

Non-linear evolution and parton distributions at low x

We suggest a new procedure for extrapolating the parton distributions from HERA to much higher energies. The procedure suggested consists of two steps. First, we solve the non-linear evolution equation. Second, we introduce a correcting function for which we write a DGLAP-type linear evolution equation. The nonlinear equation is solved numerically and estimates for the saturation scale, as well as for the gluon density at THERA and LHC energies are made.

Parton densities and saturation scale from non-linear evolution in DIS on nuclei

We present the numerical solution of the non-linear evolution equation for DIS on nuclei for $x = 10^{-2} ÷10^{-7}$. We demonstrate that the solution to the non-linear evolution equation is quite different from the Glauber - Mueller formula which was used as the initial condition for the equation. We illustrate the energy profit for performing DIS experiments on nuclei. However, it turns out that the gain is quite modest: $x_{Au} \simeq 5 x_{\rm proton} $ for the same parton density. We find that the saturation scale $Q^2_s \propto A^{1/3}$. For gold the saturation scale $Q_{s,Au} \simeq 1.5 GeV$ at $x= 10^{-3}$. Such a large value leads to considerable contribution of the high density QCD phase to RHIC data and reveals itself in essential damping for both $xG_A$ and $F_{2A}$.

Non-linear evolution and parton distributions at LHC and THERA energies

We suggest a new procedure for extrapolating the parton distributions from HERA energies to higher energies at THERA and LHC. The procedure suggested consists of two steps: first, we solve the non-linear evolution equation which includes the higher twists contributions, however this equation is deficient due to the low ($log(1/x)$) accuracy of our calculations. Second, we introduce a correcting function for which we write a DGLAP type linear evolution equation. We show that this correcting function is small in the whole kinematic region and decreases at low $x$. The nonlinear evolution equation is solved numerically and first estimates for the saturation scale, as well as for the value of the gluon density at THERA and LHC energies are made. We show that non-linear effects lead to damping of the gluon density by a factor of $2 ÷3$ at $x \approx 10^{-7}$.

High density QCD at THERA

These notes are a summary of our predictions for the new THERA project, related to deep inelastic scattering in the region of ultra low $x$ ($x \to 10^{-7}$). We collect here predictions that satisfy two criteria (i) they do not depend on specific features of the model that we have to use to estimate a possible effect; and (ii) they do not contradict the HERA data.

Has HERA reached a new QCD regime?

These notes are a summary of our efforts to answer the question in the title. Our answer is in the affirmative as: (i) HERA data indicate a large value of the gluon structure function; (ii) no contradictions with the asymptotic predictions of high density QCD have been observed; and (iii) the numerical estimates of our model give a natural description of the size of deviation from the routine DGLAP explanation. We discuss the alternative approaches and possible new experiments.

Energy Dependence of σ^{DD}/σ_{tot} in DIS and Shadowing Corrections

We gereralize the Kochegov-McLerran formula for the ratio $σ^{DD}/σ_{tot}$ in perturbative QCD, using Mueller-Glauber approach for shadowing corrections and AGK cutting rules. We investigate several phenomenological approaches with the goal of obtaining results consisent with experimental data. We fail to reproduce the observed weak energy dependence of the ratio, and conclude that the soft nonperturbative contribution present at short distances must also be included.

Shadowing Corrections and Diffractive Production in DIS on Nuclei

We calculate, in the Glauber-Mueller approach, the ratio of the diffractive dissociation cross section to the total cross section on nuclei. We observe that shadowing corrections (SC) are significant, in the calculated $\ddt$ ratio but they do not lead to a smooth energy dependence of the ratio for a proton target as was observed at HERA.

Parton-Hadron duality in QCD sum rules: quantum mechanical examples

Motivated by recent work on three-point QCD sum rules in heavy quark physics, we use the simple quantum mechanical models to study the basic issue of duality in three-point sum rules. We show that while in all of these models the duality in two-point sum rules works fine, the duality in three-point sum rules may be 100%- violated, leading to completely unreliable predictions for the matrix elements in question. The implications for three-point QCD sum rules are discussed. A new estimate for the parameter $λ_1$ of HQET is given.

Inclusive B \to sg decay in QCD

The inclusive nonleptonic transition rate of B meson in gluonic penguin channel is calculated in QCD using the heavy quark mass expansion. We found the branching ratio to be approximately 0.25%.

$g_{ωρπ}$ reexamined

The transition constant for the hadronic decay $ω\rightarrow ρπ$ is investigated by means of QCD sum rules in external axial field. The obtained value for $g_{ωρπ}$ is about 16 GeV${}^{-1}$ that is in a good agreement with experimental data.
