Roll and square convection in binary liquids: a few--mode Galerkin model

We present a few--mode Galerkin model for convection in binary fluid layers subject to an approximation to realistic horizontal boundary conditions at positive separation ratios. The model exhibits convection patterns in form of rolls and squares. The stable squares at onset develop into stable rolls at higher thermal driving. In between, a regime of a so-called crossroll structure is found. The results of our few--mode model are in good agreement with both experiments and numerical multi--mode simulations.

Magnetization of concentrated polydisperse ferrofluids: Cluster expansion

The equilibrium magnetization of concentrated ferrofluids described by a system of polydisperse dipolar hard spheres is calculated as a function of the internal magnetic field using the Born--Mayer or cluster expansion technique. This paper extends the results of Phys. Rev. E 62, 6875 (2000) obtained for monodisperse ferrofluids. The magnetization is given as a power series expansion in two parameters related to the volume fraction and the coupling strength of the dipolar interaction, respectively.

Convective Patterns in Binary Fluid Mixtures with Positive Separation Ratios

We summarize our findings about laterally periodic convection structures in binary mixtures in the Rayleigh-Benard system for positive Soret effect. Stationary roll, square, and crossroll solutions and their stability are determined with a multimode Galerkin expansion. The oscillatory competition of squares and rolls in the form of crossroll oscillations is reviewed. They undergo a subharmonic bifurcation cascade where the oscillation period grows in integer steps as a consequence of an entrainment process.

Convection in binary fluid mixtures: A model of four coupled amplitudes

We consider the bifurcation scenario that is found in Rayleigh-Benard convection of binary fluid mixtures like ethanol-water at positive separation ratios and small Lewis numbers leading to a bifurcation sequence of square, oscillatory crossroll, stationary crossroll, and roll patterns. We propose a system of four coupled amplitudes that is capable to model all important properties.

Driving convection by a temperature gradient or a heat current

Bifurcation properties, stability behavior, dynamics, and the heat transfer of convection structures in a horizontal fluid layer that is driven away from thermal equilibrium by imposing a vertical temperature difference are compared with those resulting from imposing a heat current. In particular oscillatory convection that occurs in binary fluid mixtures in the form of travelling and standing waves is determined numerically for the two different driving mechanisms. Conditions are elucidated under which current driven convection is stable while temperature driven convection is unstable.

Traveling Wave Fronts and Localized Traveling Wave Convection in Binary Fluid Mixtures

Nonlinear fronts between spatially extended traveling wave convection (TW) and quiescent fluid and spatially localized traveling waves (LTWs) are investigated in quantitative detail in the bistable regime of binary fluid mixtures heated from below. A finite-difference method is used to solve the full hydrodynamic field equations in a vertical cross section of the layer perpendicular to the convection roll axes. Results are presented for ethanol-water parameters with several strongly negative separation ratios where TW solutions bifurcate subcritically. Fronts and LTWs are compared with each other and similarities and differences are elucidated. Phase propagation out of the quiescent fluid into the convective structure entails a unique selection of the latter while fronts and interfaces where the phase moves into the quiescent state behave differently. Interpretations of various experimental observations are suggested.

Oscillatory convection in binary mixtures: thermodiffusion, solutal buoyancy, and advection

The role of thermodiffusive generation of concentration fluctuations via the Soret effect, their contribution to the buoyancy forces that drive convection, the advective mixing effect of the latter, and the diffusive homogenisation are compared and elucidated for oscillatory convection. Numerically obtained solutions of the field equations in the form of spatially extended relaxed traveling waves, of standing waves, and of the transient growth of standing waves and their transition to traveling waves are discussed as well as spatially localized convective states of traveling waves that are surrounded by the quiescent fluid.

Magnetic properties of colloidal suspensions of interacting magnetic particles

We review equilibrium thermodynamic properties of systems of magnetic particles like ferrofluids in which dipolar interactions play an important role. The review is focussed on two subjects: ({\em i}) the magnetization with the initial magnetic susceptibility as a special case and ({\em ii}) the phase transition behavior. Here the condensation ("gas/liquid") transition in the subsystem of the suspended particles is treated as well as the isotropic/ferromagnetic transition to a state with spontaneously generated long--range magnetic order.

Standing wave oscillations in binary mixture convection: from onset via symmetry breaking to period doubling into chaos

Oscillatory solution branches of the hydrodynamic field equations describing convection in the form of a standing wave (SW) in binary fluid mixtures heated from below are determined completely for several negative Soret coefficients. Galerkin as well as finite-difference simulations were used. They were augmented by simple control methods to obtain also unstable SW states. For sufficiently negative Soret coefficients unstable SWs bifurcate subcritically out of the quiescent conductive state. They become stable via a saddle-node bifurcation when lateral phase pinning is exerted. Eventually their invariance under time-shift by half a period combined with reflexion at midheight of the fluid layer gets broken. Thereafter they terminate by undergoing a period-doubling cascade into chaos.

Noise sensitivity of sub- and supercritically bifurcating patterns with group velocities close to the convective-absolute instability

The influence of small additive noise on structure formation near a forwards and near an inverted bifurcation as described by a cubic and quintic Ginzburg Landau amplitude equation, respectively, is studied numerically for group velocities in the vicinity of the convective-absolute instability where the deterministic front dynamics would empty the system.

Localized Waves without the Existence of Extended Waves: Oscillatory Convection of Binary Mixtures with Strong Soret Effect

Spatially confined solutions of traveling convection rolls are determined numerically for binary mixtures like ethanol-water. The appropriate field equations are solved in a vertical crossection of the rolls perpendicular to their axes subject to realistic horizontal boundary conditions. The localized convective states are stably and robustly sustained by strongly nonlinear mixing and complex flow-induced concentration redistribution. We elucidate how this enables their existence for strongly negative separation ratios at small subcritical heating rates below the saddle-node of extended traveling convection rolls where the quiescent fluid is strongly stable.

Thermoconvection in magnetized ferrofluids: the influence of boundaries with finite heat conductivity

Realistic boundaries of finite heat conductivity Realistic boundaries of finite heat conductivity for thermoconvection in a Rayleigh-Bénard setup with magnetized ferrofluids are investigated. A linear stability analysis of the conductive state is performed with a shooting method. It shows that the critical wave number is for any magnetic field stronly influenced by the conductivity of the boundaries. Linear as well as nonlinear coefficients of a Ginzburg Landau amplitude equation for convection shortly above the onset are evaluated as functions of the magnetic Rayleigh number, the boundary conductivities, and the fluid Prandtl number.

Subharmonic bifurcation cascade of pattern oscillations caused by winding number increasing entrainment

Convection structures in binary fluid mixtures are investigated for positive Soret coupling in the driving regime where solutal and thermal contributions to the buoyancy forces compete. Bifurcation properties of stable and unstable stationary square, roll, and crossroll (CR) structures and the oscillatory competition between rolls and squares are determined numerically as a function of fluid parameters. A novel type of subharmonic bifurcation cascade (SC) where the oscillation period grows in integer steps as $n (2π)/(ω)$ is found and elucidated to be an entrainment process.

Model for convection in binary liquids

A minimal, analytically manageable Galerkin type model for convection in binary mixtures subject to realistic boundary conditions is presented. The model elucidates and reproduces the typical bifurcation topology of extended stationary and oscillatory convective states seen for negative Soret coupling: backwards stationary and Hopf bifurcations, saddle node bifurcations to stable strongly nonlinear stationary and traveling wave (TW) states, and merging of the TW solution branch with stationary states. Also unstable standing wave solutions are obtained. A systematic analysis of the concentration balance for liquid mixture parameters has lead to a representation of the concentration field in terms of two linear and two nonlinear modes. This truncation captures the important large--scale effects in the laterally averaged concentration field resulting from advective and diffusive mixing. Also the fact that with increasing flow intensity along the TW solution branch the frequency decreases monotonically in the same way as the mixing increases --- the variance of the concentration distribution decreases --- is ensured and reproduced well. Universal scaling relations between flow intensity, frequency, and variance of the concentration distribution (degree of mixing) in a TW are predicted by the model and have been confirmed by numerical solutions of the full equations. The validity of the model is checked by comparison with numerical solutions of the full field equations.

Influence of the Soret effect on convection of binary fluids

Convection in horizontal layers of binary fluids heated from below and in particular the influence of the Soret effect on the bifurcation properties of extended stationary and traveling patterns that occur for negative Soret coupling is investigated theoretically. The fixed points corresponding to these two convection structures are determined for realistic boundary conditions with a many mode Galerkin scheme for temperature and concentration and an accurate one mode truncation of the velocity field. This solution procedure yields the stable and unstable solutions for all stationary and traveling patterns so that complete phase diagrams for the different convection types in typical binary liquid mixtures can easily be computed. Also the transition from weakly to strongly nonlinear states can be analyzed in detail. An investigation of the concentration current and of the relevance of its constituents shows the way for a simplification of the mode representation of temperature and concentration field as well as for an analytically manageable few mode description.

Noise sustained pattern growth: Bulk versus boundary effects

The effect of thermally generated bulk stochastic forces on the statistical growth dynamics of forwards bifurcating propagating macroscopic patterns is compared with the influence of fluctuations at the boundary of a semiinfinite system, $0<x$. To that end the linear complex Ginzburg-Landau amplitude equation with additive stochastic forcing is solved by a spatial Laplace transformation in the presence of arbitrary boundary conditions for the fluctuations of the pattern amplitude at $x=0$. A situation where the latter are advected with an imposed through-flow from an outside upstream part towards the inlet boundary at $x=0$ is investigated in more detail. The spatiotemporal growth behavior in the convectively unstable regime is compared with recent work by Swift, Babcock, and Hohenberg [Physica A 204, 625 (1994)] where a special boundary condition is imposed.

Strongly nonlinear convection in binary fluids: Minimal model for extended states using symmetry decomposed modes

Spatially extended stationary and traveling states in the strongly nonlinear regime of convection in layers of binary fluid mixtures heated from below are described by a few-mode-model. It is derived from the proper hydrodynamic balance equations including experimentally relevant boundary conditions with a non-standard Galerkin approximation that uses numerically obtained, symmetry decomposed modes. Properties of the model are elucidated and compared with full numerical solutions of the field equations.

Influence of boundaries on pattern selection in through-flow

The problem of pattern selection in absolutely unstable open flow systems is investigated by considering the example of Rayleigh-Bénard convection. The spatiotemporal structure of convection rolls propagating downstream in an externally imposed flow is determined for six different inlet/outlet boundary conditions. Results are obtained by numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations and by comparison with the corresponding Ginzburg-Landau amplitude equation. A unique selection process is observed being a function of the control parameters and the boundary conditions but independent of the history and the system length. The problem can be formulated in terms of a nonlinear eigen/boundary value problem where the frequency of the propagating pattern is the eigenvalue. PACS: 47.54.+r, 47.20.Bp, 47.27.Te, 47.20.Ky
