The Island state of the Atoll Source 4U 1820--30

We study the rapid X-ray time variability in all public data available from the \textit{Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer's} Proportional Counter Array on the atoll source 4U 1820--30 in the low-luminosity island state. A total of $\sim46$ ks of data were used. We compare the frequencies of the variability components of 4U 1820--30 with those in other atolls sources. These frequencies were previously found to follow a universal scheme of correlations. We find that 4U 1820--30 shows correlations that are shifted by factors of $1.13\pm0.01$ and $1.21\pm0.02$ with respect to those in other atoll sources. These shifts are similar to, but smaller than the shift factor $\sim1.45$ previously reported for some accreting millisecond pulsars. Therefore, 4U 1820--30 is the first atoll source which shows no significant pulsations but has a significant shift in the frequency correlations compared with other 3 non-pulsating atoll sources.

Peculiar spectral and power spectral behaviour of the LMXB GX 13+1

We present results of an analysis of all 480 ks of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array data obtained from 17 May 1998 to 11 October 1998 on the luminous low mass X-ray binary GX 13+1. We analysed the spectral properties in colour-colour diagrams (CDs) and hardness-intensity diagrams (HIDs) and fitted the power spectra with a multi-Lorentzian model. GX 13+1 traces out a curved track in the CDs on a time scale of hours, which is very reminiscent of a standard atoll track containing an island, and lower and upper banana branch. However, both count rate and power spectral properties vary along this track in a very unusual way, not seen in any other atoll or Z source. The count rate, which varied by a factor of ~1.6, along a given track first decreases and then increases, causing the motion through the HIDs to be in the opposite sense to that in the CD, contrary to all other Z and atoll sources. Along a CD track, the very low frequency noise uniquely decreases in amplitude from ~5 to ~2% (rms). The high frequency noise amplitude decreases from ~4% to less than 1% and its characteristic frequency decreases from ~10 to \~5 Hz. The 57-69 Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) found earlier is also detected, and no kHz QPOs are found. In addition the entire track shows secular motion on a time scale of about a week. The average count rate as well as the amplitude of the very low frequency noise correlate with this secular motion. We discuss a possible explanation for the peculiar properties of GX 13+1 in terms of an unusual orientation or strength of a relativistic jet.

Discovery of type-I X-ray bursts from the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1708-40

We report the discovery of type-I X-ray bursts from the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1708-40 during the 100 ks observation performed by BeppoSAX on 1999 August 15-16. Six X-ray bursts have been observed. The unabsorbed 2-10 keV fluxes of the bursts range from ~ (3-9)x10^(-10) erg cm^(-2)s^(-1). A correlation between peak flux and fluence of the bursts is found, in agreement with the behaviour observed in other similar sources. There is a trend of the burst flux to increase with the time interval from the previous burst. From the value of the persistent flux we infer a mass accretion rate Mdot~7x10^(-11) Msun/yr, that may correspond to the mixed hydrogen/helium burning regime triggered by thermally unstable hydrogen. We have also analysed a BeppoSAX observation performed on 2001 August 22 and previous RXTE observations of 4U 1708-40, where no bursts have been observed; we found persistent fluxes of more than a factor of 7 higher than the persistent flux observed during the BeppoSAX observation showing X-ray bursts.

Study of the Temporal Behavior of 4U 1728-34 as a Function of its Position in the Color-Color Diagram

We study the timing properties of the bursting atoll source 4U 1728-34 as a function of its position in the X-ray color-color diagram. In the island part of the color-color diagram (corresponding to the hardest energy spectra) the power spectrum of 4U 1728-34 shows several features such as a band-limited noise component present up to a few tens of Hz, a low frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (LFQPO) at frequencies between 20 and 40 Hz, a peaked noise component around 100 Hz, and one or two QPOs at kHz frequencies. In addition to these, in the lower banana (corresponding to softer energy spectra) we also find a very low frequency noise (VLFN) component below ~1 Hz. In the upper banana (corresponding to the softest energy spectra) the power spectra are dominated by the VLFN, with a peaked noise component around 20 Hz. We find that the frequencies of the kHz QPOs are well correlated with the position in the X-ray color-color diagram. For the frequency of the LFQPO and the break frequency of the broad-band noise component the relation appears more complex. These frequencies both increase when the frequency of the upper kHz QPO increases from 400 to 900 Hz, but at this frequency a jump in the values of the parameters occurs. We interpret this jump in terms of the gradual appearance of a QPO at the position of the break at high inferred mass accretion rate, while the previous LFQPO disappears. Simultaneously, another kind of noise appears with a break frequency of ~7 Hz, similar to the NBO of Z sources. The 100 Hz peaked noise does not seem to correlate with the position of the source in the color-color diagram, but remains relatively constant in frequency. This component may be similar to several 100 Hz QPOs observed in black hole binaries.
