KLASH Conceptual Design Report

The last decade witnessed an increasing interest in axions and axion-like particles with many theoretical works published and many new experimental proposals that started a real race towards their discovery. This paper is the Conceptual Design Report of the KLASH (KLoe magnet for Axion SearcH) experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF). The idea of this experiment has been stimulated by the availability of the large volume superconducting magnet, with a moderate magnetic field of 0.6 T, used in the KLOE detector at the DAFNE collider. The main conclusion we draw from this report is the possibility to build and put in operation at LNF in 2-3 years a large haloscope with the sensitivity to KSVZ axions in the low mass range between 0.2 and 1 $μ$eV, complementary to that of other experiments. Timeline and cost are competitive with respect to other proposals in the same mass region thanks to the availability of most of the infrastructure, in particular the superconducting magnet and the cryogenics plant.

Magnetism in SQUIDs at Millikelvin Temperatures

We have characterized the temperature dependence of the flux threading dc SQUIDs cooled to millikelvin temperatures. The flux increases as 1/T as temperature is lowered; moreover, the flux change is proportional to the density of trapped vortices. The data is compatible with the thermal polarization of surface spins in the trapped fields of the vortices. In the absence of trapped flux, we observe evidence of spin-glass freezing at low temperature. These results suggest an explanation for the "universal" 1/f flux noise in SQUIDs and superconducting qubits.

Instability of Equilibrium States for Coupled Heat Reservoirs at Different Temperatures

We consider quantum systems consisting of a ``small'' system coupled to two reservoirs (called open systems). We show that such a system has no equilibrium states normal with respect to any state of the decoupled system in which the reservoirs are at different temperatures, provided that either the temperatures or the temperature difference divided by the product of the temperatures are not too small. Our proof involves an elaborate spectral analysis of a general class of generators of the dynamics of open quantum systems, including quantum Liouville operators (``positive temperature Hamiltonians'') which generate the dynamics of the systems under consideration.
