Single chain structure in thin polymer films: Corrections to Flory's and Silberberg's hypotheses

Conformational properties of polymer melts confined between two hard structureless walls are investigated by Monte Carlo simulation of the bond-fluctuation model. Parallel and perpendicular components of chain extension, bond-bond correlation function and structure factor are computed and compared with recent theoretical approaches attempting to go beyond Flory's and Silberberg's hypotheses. We demonstrate that for ultrathin films where the thickness, $H$, is smaller than the excluded volume screening length (blob size), $ξ$, the chain size parallel to the walls diverges logarithmically, $R^2/2N \approx b^2 + c \log(N)$ with $c \sim 1/H$. The corresponding bond-bond correlation function decreases like a power law, $C(s) = d/s^ω$ with $s$ being the curvilinear distance between bonds and $ω=1$. % Upon increasing the film thickness, $H$, we find -- in contrast to Flory's hypothesis -- the bulk exponent $ω=3/2$ and, more importantly, an {\em decreasing} $d(H)$ that gives direct evidence for an {\em enhanced} self-interaction of chain segments reflected at the walls. Systematic deviations from the Kratky plateau as a function of $H$ are found for the single chain form factor parallel to the walls in agreement with the {\em non-monotonous} behaviour predicted by theory. This structure in the Kratky plateau might give rise to an erroneous estimation of the chain extension from scattering experiments. For large $H$ the deviations are linear with the wave vector, $q$, but are very weak. In contrast, for ultrathin films, $H<ξ$, very strong corrections are found (albeit logarithmic in $q$) suggesting a possible experimental verification of our results.

Avoiding Boundary Effects in Wang-Landau Sampling

A simple modification of the ``Wang-Landau sampling'' algorithm removes the systematic error that occurs at the boundary of the range of energy over which the random walk takes place in the original algorithm.

Inter-molecular structure factors of macromolecules in solution: integral equation results

The inter-molecular structure of semidilute polymer solutions is studied theoretically. The low density limit of a generalized Ornstein-Zernicke integral equation approach to polymeric liquids is considered. Scaling laws for the dilute-to-semidilute crossover of random phase (RPA) like structure are derived for the inter-molecular structure factor on large distances when inter-molecular excluded volume is incorporated at the microscopic level. This leads to a non-linear equation for the excluded volume interaction parameter. For macromolecular size-mass scaling exponents, $ν$, above a spatial-dimension dependent value, $ν_c=2/d$, mean field like density scaling is recovered, but for $ν<ν_c$ the density scaling becomes non-trivial in agreement with field theoretic results and justifying phenomenological extensions of RPA. The structure of the polymer mesh in semidilute solutions is discussed in detail and comparisons with large scale Monte Carlo simulations are added. Finally a new possibility to determine the correction to scaling exponent $ω_{12}$ is suggested.

Isophot Observations of Comet Hale-Bopp: Initial Data Reduction

Comet Hale-Bopp was observed five times with ISOPHOT, the photometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Each time broadband photometry was performed using 4 different detectors, 5 apertures and, 10 filters covering the range between 3.6 to 175 $μ$m. Calibration measurements using the internal Fine Calibration Source were done together with each individual measurement. Background observations were performed with identical instrument settings at the same positions on the sky several days after the comet observations. The observation strategy and the initial data reduction steps are described in some detail and the resulting in-band power values of the Hale-Bopp observations and their uncertainties are derived. Initial reduction of these measurements was performed in 3 steps: (1) processing of raw data by removing instrumental and energetic particle effects, (2) averaging of the individual signals, and (3) determination of the detector responsivities and their uncertainties. The detector signal is determined by two different methods and the best value is chosen. At the present level of processing uncertainties range from 10% to a factor of 3 for the low power levels at short wavelengths. The in-band power levels at different wavelengths varied over 3 orders of magnitude.

Interfering Doorway States and Giant Resonances. I: Resonance Spectrum and Multipole Strengths

A phenomenological schematic model of multipole giant resonances (GR) is considered which treats the external interaction via common decay channels on the same footing as the coherent part of the internal residual interaction. The damping due to the coupling to the sea of complicated states is neglected. As a result, the formation of GR is governed by the interplay and competition of two kinds of collectivity, the internal and the external one. The mixing of the doorway components of a GR due to the external interaction influences significantly their multipole strengths, widths and positions in energy. In particular, a narrow resonance state with an appreciable multipole strength is formed when the doorway components strongly overlap.

Interfering Doorway States and Giant Resonances. II: Transition Strengths

The mixing of the doorway components of a giant resonance (GR) due to the interaction via common decay channels influences significantly the distribution of the multipole strength and the energy spectrum of the decay products of the GR. The concept of the partial widths of a GR becomes ambiguous when the mixing is strong. In this case, the partial widths determined in terms of the $K$- and $S$-matrices must be distinguished. The photoemission turns out to be most sensitive to the overlapping of the doorway states. At high excitation energies, the interference between the doorway states leads to a restructuring towards lower energies and apparent quenching of the dipole strength.

Correlations between resonances in a statistical scattering model

The distortion of the regular motion in a quantum system by its coupling to the continuum of decay channels is investigated. The regular motion is described by means of a Poissonian ensemble. We focus on the case of only few channels K<10. The coupling to the continuum induces two main effects, due to which the distorted system differs from a chaotic system (described by a Gaussian ensemble): 1. The width distribution for large coupling becomes broader than the corresponding $χ^2_K$ distribution in the GOE case. 2. Due to the coupling to the continuum, correlations are induced not only between the positions of the resonances but also between positions and widths. These correlations remain even in the strong coupling limit. In order to explain these results, an asymptotic expression for the width distribution is derived for the one channel case. It relates the width of a trapped resonance state to the distance between its two neighboring levels.
