Large mixing angle solution to the solar neutrino problem and random matter density perturbations

There are reasons to believe that mechanisms exist in the solar interior which lead to random density perturbations in the resonant region of the Large Mixing Angle solution to the solar neutrino problem. We find that, in the presence of these density perturbations, the best fit point in the (sin^2(2θ), Delta_m^2) parameter space moves to smaller values, compared with the values obtained for the standard LMA solution. Combining solar data with KamLAND results, we find a new compatibility region, which we call VERY-LOW LMA, where sin^2(2θ) ~ 0.6 and Delta_m^2~2e-5 eV^2, for random density fluctuations of order 5% < ξ< 8%. We argue that such values of density fluctuations are still allowed by helioseismological observations at small scales of order 10 - 1000 km deep inside the solar core.

Status of a hybrid three-neutrino interpretation of neutrino data

We reanalyze the non-standard interaction (NSI) solutions to the solar neutrino problem in the light of the latest solar, atmospheric and reactor neutrino data. We show that such solutions, although preferred by the solar data and consistent with the oscillation description of the atmospheric neutrino data, are ruled out by the first results of the KamLAND reactor experiment, at more than 3_sigma.

Global Analysis of the post-SNO Solar Neutrino Data for Standard and Non-Standard Oscillation Mechanisms

What can we learn from solar neutrino observations? Is there any solution to the solar neutrino anomaly which is favored by the present experimental panorama? After SNO results, is it possible to affirm that neutrinos have mass? In order to answer such questions we analyze the current available data from the solar neutrino experiments, including the recent SNO result, in view of many acceptable solutions to the solar neutrino problem based on different conversion mechanisms, for the first time, using the same statistical procedure. This allows us to do a direct comparison of the goodness of the fit among different solutions, from which we can discuss and conclude on the current status of each proposed dynamical mechanism. These solutions are based on different assumptions: (a) neutrino mass and mixing, (b) non-vanishing neutrino magnetic moment, (c) the existence of non-standard flavor-changing and non-universal neutrino interactions and (d) the tiny violation of the equivalence principle. We investigate the quality of the fit provided by each one of these solutions not only to the total rate measured by all the solar neutrino experiments but also to the recoil electron energy spectrum measured at different zenith angles by the Super-Kamiokande collaboration. We conclude that several non-standard neutrino flavor conversion mechanisms provide a very good fit to the experimental data which is comparable with (or even slightly better than) the most famous solution to the solar neutrino anomaly based on the neutrino oscillation induced by mass.

Probing Flavor Changing Neutrino Interactions Using Neutrino Beams from a Muon Storage Ring

We discuss the capabilities of a future neutrino factory based on intense neutrino beams from a muon storage ring to explore the non-standard neutrino matter interactions, which are assumed to be sub-leading effects in the standard mass induced neutrino oscillations. The conjunction of these two mechanisms will magnify fake CP violating effect in the presence of matter which is not coming from the CP phase in the neutrino mixing matrix. We show that such fake CP violation can be observed in neutrino factory experiments by measuring the difference between the neutrino and anti-neutrino probabilities. In order to perform such test, we consider three neutrino flavors, admitting the mixing parameters in the range consistent with the oscillation solution to the atmospheric and the solar neutrino problems, as well as with the constraints imposed by the reactor neutrino data. We show that with a 10 kt detector with 5 years of operation, a stored muon energy E_μ\ge 20 GeV, 2 \times 10^{20} muon decays per year, and a baseline L \sim 732 km, such a neutrino facility can probe the non-standard flavor changing neutrino interactions down to the level of (10^{-3}-10^{-2})~G_F, in both ν_μ\to ν_τ/ \bar ν_μ\to \bar ν_τand ν_e \to ν_τ/\bar ν_e \to \bar ν_τmodes.

Testing the principle of equivalence by supernova neutrinos

We study the possible impact of the neutrino oscillation which could be induced by a tiny violation of equivalence principle (VEP) for neutrinos emitted from supernova driven by gravitational collapse. Due to the absence of any significant indication of neutrino oscillation in the SN1987A data, we obtain sever bounds on relevant VEP parameters δγ\lsim O(10^{-31}) for massless or degenerated neutrinos and δγ\lsim O(10^{-16})\times [Δm^2/10^{-5} eV^2] for massive neutrinos.

On the massless "just-so" solution to the solar neutrino problem

We study the effect of the non-resonant, vacuum oscillation-like neutrino flavor conversion induced by non-standard flavor changing and non-universal flavor diagonal neutrino interactions with electrons in the sun. We have found an acceptable fit for the combined analysis for the solar experiments total rates, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) energy spectrum and zenith angle dependence. Phenomenological constraints on non-standard flavor changing and non-universal flavor diagonal neutrino interactions are considered.

Status of the solution to the solar neutrino problem based on non-standard neutrino interactions

We analyze the current status of the solution to the solar neutrino problem based both on: a) non-standard flavor changing neutrino interactions (FCNI) and b) non-universal flavor diagonal neutrino interactions (FDNI). We find that FCNI and FDNI with matter in the sun as well as in the earth provide a good fit not only to the total rate measured by all solar neutrino experiments but also to the day-night and seasonal variations of the event rate, as well as the recoil electron energy spectrum measured by the SuperKamiokande collaboration. This solution does not require massive neutrinos and neutrino mixing in vacuum. Stringent experimental constraints on FCNI from bounds on lepton flavor violating decays and on FDNI from limits on lepton universality violation rule out $ν_e \to ν_μ$ transitions induced by New Physics as a solution to the solar neutrino problem. However, a solution involving $ν_e \to ν_τ$ transitions is viable and could be tested independently by the upcoming $B$-factories if flavor violating tau decays would be observed at a rate close to the present upper bounds.

Flavor changing models with strictly massless neutrinos

Theoretical models which present flavor changing neutrino interactions and simultaneously prevent this particle from acquiring any mass exist. We discuss some of them and their predictions for neutrino oscillations in matter which can account for the solar neutrino anomaly as well as the zenith-angle dependence of the deficit of atmospheric neutrinos observed by the SuperKamiokande experiment without invoking, therefore, neutrino masses nor mixing.

Current Status of the Resonant Spin-Flavor Precession Solution to the Solar Neutrino Problem

We discuss the current status of the resonant spin-flavor precession (RSFP) solution to the solar neutrino problem. We perform a fit to all the latest solar neutrino data for various assumed magnetic field profiles in the sun. We show that the RSFP can account for all the solar neutrino experiments, giving as good fit as other alternative solutions such as MSW or Just so, and therefore can be a viable solution to the solar neutrino problem

Atmospheric neutrino observations and flavor changing interactions

Flavor changing (FC) neutrino-matter interactions can account for the zenith-angle dependent deficit of atmospheric neutrinos observed in the SuperKamiokande experiment, without directly invoking neither neutrino mass, nor mixing. We find that FC $ν_μ$-matter interactions provide a good fit to the observed zenith angle distributions, comparable in quality to the neutrino oscillation hypothesis. The required FC interactions arise naturally in many attractive extensions of the Standard Model.

Effects of magnetohydrodynamics matter density fluctuations on the solar neutrino resonant spin-flavor precession

Taking into account the stringent limits from helioseismology observations on possible matter density fluctuations described by magnetohydrodynamics theory, we find the corresponding time variations of solar neutrino survival probability due to the resonant spin-flavor precession phenomenon with amplitude of order O(10%). We discuss the physics potential of high statistics real time experiments, like as Superkamiokande, to observe the effects of such magnetohydrodynamics fluctuations on their data. We conclude that these observations could be thought as a test of the resonant spin-flavor precession solution to the solar neutrino anomaly.

On mixing angles and resonances in three neutrino oscillations in matter

We find exact analytical expressions for mixing angles in matter in the context of three generation neutrino oscillations in matter to discuss the role of resonances in this phenomenon. We show that some knowledge from conventional two neutrino MSW effect, which has been extended to approximated solutions to three neutrino oscillations, has to be abandoned in this exact approach. We observe that maximal values for the mixing angles in matter are found in nonresonant regions and stationary phases do not coincide anymore with resonances in this simple extension of the MSW effect. We present a general way to identify a resonance and discuss what we can physically expect in these regions.

A remark on the tau-neutrino mass limit

We point out that the usual experimental upper bounds on the ``tau-neutrino mass'' do not apply if neutrino mixing is considered. The suppression of the population of the tau decay spectrum near the end-point, caused by mixing, may be compensated by an enhancement due to a resonant mechanism of hadronization. It is necessary therefore to analyse the whole spectrum to infer some limit to the ``tau-neutrino mass". We argue that, consequently, neutrino mixing evades the objection to interpret KARMEN anomaly as a heavy sequential neutrino.

Adiabatic matter effect with three generation neutrinos and the solar neutrino problem

We find an exact analytic solution for the time evolution of a three Dirac neutrino system adiabatically oscillating in matter, constructing explicitly the relevant $3\times 3$ mixing matrix in matter. Using this result we investigate the solar neutrino data in a scenario where the neutrino masses are such that $m_1\alt m_2\ll m_3$, taking into account several phenomenological constraints on neutrino mixing angles and masses. A solution of the solar neutrino problem for large values of the parameter $δm^2=m_2^2-m_1^2$ which are not usually associated with a resonance is found. This is an essentially three-generation effect.
