Elastic, electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of K2Cu2GeS4: a new chalcogenide material

We report the first principles study of structural, elastic, electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of newly synthesized K2Cu2GeS4. The structural parameters are found to be in good agreement with experimental results. The single crystal elastic constants (Cij) are calculated and K2Cu2GeS4 is found to be mechanical stable. The analysis of polycrystalline elastic constants reveals that the compound is expected to be soft in nature. The values of Pugh and Poisson ratios suggested that the compound lies in the border line of ductile/brittle behavior. The chemical bonding is primarily ionic, the inter-atomic forces are central in nature and the compound is mechanically anisotropic. The computed electronic band profile shows semiconducting characteristics and the estimated band gap is strongly dependent on the functional used representing the exchange correlations. The nature of chemical bonding is explained using electronic charge density mapping. Important optical constants such as dielectric constants, refractive index, absorption coefficient, photoconductivity, reflectivity and loss function are calculated and discussed in detail. Optical conductivity is found to be in good qualitative agreement with the results of band structure calculations. The Seebeck coefficients are positive for the entire temperature range used in this study, suggesting the presence of p-type charge carriers. We have obtained large Seebeck coefficent, 681 V/K at 100 K and 286 V/K at 300 K. At room temperature, the electrical conductivity and electronic thermal conductivity are 1.8 31018 ms)-1 and 0.5 1014 W/mK.s, respectively. The dimensionless figure of merit of K2Cu2GeS4 is evaluated as ~1.0 at 300 K. This suggests that K2Cu2GeS4 is a potential candidate for thermoelectric applications.

Recently synthesized (Zr1-xTix)2AlC (0 - x - 1) solid solutions: Theoretical study of the effects of M mixing on physical properties

The effects of M atomic species mixing on the physical properties of newly synthesized MAX phase (Zr1-xTix)2AlC solid solutions have been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The lattice constants in good accord with the experimental results, are found to decrease with Ti content. The elastic constants, Cij, and the other polycrystalline elastic moduli have been calculated. The elastic constants satisfy the mechanical stability conditions of these solid solutions. The constants C11, C33 and C44 are found to increase with Ti contents up to x = 0.67, thereafter these decrease slightly. A reverse trend is followed by C12 and C13. The elastic moduli are also found to increase up to x = 0.67, beyond which these moduli go down slightly. Pughs ratio and Poissons ratio both confirm the brittleness of (Zr1-xTix)2AlC. Different anisotropy factors revealed the anisotropic character of these solid solutions. A non-vanishing value of the electronic energy density of states (EDOS) at the Fermi level suggests that (Zr1-xTix)2AlC are metallic in nature. A mixture of covalent, ionic and metallic bonding has been indicated from the electronic structure with dominant covalent bonding due to hybridization of Zr-4d states and C-2p states. The variation of elastic stiffness and elastic parameters with x is seen to be correlated with partial DOS (PDOS) and charge density distribution. The calculated Debye temperature and minimum thermal conductivity are found to increase with Ti contents, while melting temperature is the highest for x = 0.67. The solid solution with x = 0.67 shows improved mechanical and thermal properties compared to that of the two end members Zr2AlC and Ti2AlC. The study of charge transport properties of (Zr1-xTix)2AlC reveals the metallic nature with saturated resistivity. The maximum power factor is obtained at 400 K for (Zr1-xTix)2AlC.

Predicted MAX phase Sc2InC: Dynamical stability, vibrational and optical properties

First principles pseudopotential calculations have been performed for the first time to investigate the phonon dispersion, thermodynamic and optical properties including charge density, Fermi surface, Mulliken population analysis, theoretical Vickers hardness of predicted MAX phase Sc2InC. We revisited the structural, elastic and electronic properties of the compound which assessed the reliability of our calculations. The analysis of the elastic constants and the phonon dispersion along with phonon density of states indicates the mechanical stability and dynamical stability of the MAX phase. The Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, entropy specific heat capacity and Debye temperature have also been calculated from the phonon density of states. Mulliken population analysis indicates the existence of prominent covalency in chemical bonding of Sc2InC. The electronic charge density mapping shows a combination of ionic, covalent and metallic bonding in the compound. The Fermi surface is comprised due to the low dispersive Sc 3d and C 2p states from the [ScC] blocks. The phase is expected to be a soft material and easily mechinable due to its low Vicker hardness value. Furthermore, the analysis of various optical properties (such as dielectric function, refractive index, photoconductivity, absorption coefficients, loss function and reflectivity) suggests that the nanolaminate Sc2InC is a promising candidate for optoelectronic devices in the visible and ultraviolet energy regions and as a coating material to avoid solar heating.

First-principles study of superconducting ScRhP and ScIrP pnictides

For the first time, we have reported in this study an ab initio investigation on elastic properties, Debye temperature, Mulliken population, Vickers hardness, and charge density of superconducting ScRhP and ScIrP phosphides. The optimized cell parameters show fair agreement with experimental results. The elastic constants and moduli, Poisson's as well as Pugh's ratio and elastic anisotropy factors have also been calculated to understand the mechanical behavior of these ternary compounds. Their mechanical stability is confirmed via the calculated elastic constants. The calculated values for Poisson's and Pugh's ratio indicate the ductile nature of these compounds. ScIrP is expected to be elastically more anisotropic than ScRhP. The estimated value of Debye temperature predicts that ScRhP is thermally more conductive than ScIrP and the phonon frequency in ScRhP is higher than that in ScIrP. The hardness of ScRhP is lower due to the presence of anti-bonding Rh-Rh in ScRhP. The investigated electronic structure predict that the metallic conductivity of ScRhP reduces significantly when Rh is replaced with Ir. The main contribution to the total density of states (TDOS) at Fermi-level (EF) comes from the d-electrons of Sc and Rh/Ir in both compounds. These two ternary compounds are characterized mainly by metallic and covalent bonding with little ionic contribution. As far as superconductivity is concerned, the matrix elements of electron-phonon interaction are noticeably enhanced in ScIrP compared to that in ScRhP.

Ab-initio study of mechanical and electronic properties of MoAlB

Using first-principles calculations, the structural, elastic and electronic properties of MoAlB have been investigated for the first time. The optimized lattice constants exhibit fair agreement with the experimental values. The computed elastic constants satisfy the mechanical stability conditions for the MoAlB. The Mo-based boride MoAlB is elastically anisotropic and can be classified as brittle material. This boride is expected to show reasonable thermal conductivity due to its high Debye temperature of 693 K. The metallic electrical conductivity of this compound is predicted from the electronic band structure calculations. The chemical bonding in MoAlB is basically covalent in nature which is supported by the calculated electronic density of states (DOS), Mulliken population, and charge density distribution. The estimated hardness value of 11.6 GPa for MoAlB suggests that it is softer compared to many other borides. The Fermi surface is formed due to low dispersive Mo 4d-like bands, which makes the compound a conductive one.

Comparative study of Mo2Ga2C with superconducting MAX phase Mo2GaC: a first-principles calculations

The structural, electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of Mo2Ga2C are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The optimized crystal structure is obtained and the lattice parameters are compared with available experimental data. The electronic density of states (DOS) is calculated and analyzed. The metallic behavior for the compound is confirmed and the value of DOS at Fermi level is 4.2 states per unit cell per eV. Technologically important optical parameters (e.g., dielectric function, refractive index, absorption coefficient, photo conductivity, reflectivity, and loss function) have been calculated for the first time. The study of dielectric constant (e1) indicates the Drude-like behavior. The absorption and conductivity spectra suggest that the compound is metallic. The reflectance spectrum shows that this compound has the potential to be used as a solar reflector. The thermodynamic properties such as the temperature and pressure dependent bulk modulus, Debye temperature, specific heats, and thermal expansion coefficient of Mo2Ga2C MAX phase are derived from the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effect also for the first time. Analysis of Tc expression using available parameter values (DOS, Debye temperature, atomic mass etc.) suggests that the compound is less likely to be superconductor.

Newly synthesized Zr2(Al0.58Bi0.42)C, Zr2(Al0.2Sn0.8)C, and Zr2(Al0.3Sb0.7)C MAX phases: A first-principles study

The structural, elastic, and electronic properties of newly synthesized Zr2(Al0.58Bi0.42)C, Zr2(Al0.2Sn0.8)C, and Zr2(Al0.3Sb0.7)C MAX nanolaminates have been studied using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the first time. Theoretical Vickers hardness has also been estimated for these compounds. All the calculated results are compared with experimental data and also with that of recently discovered Zr2AlC phase, where available. Zr2(Al0.58Bi0.42)C and Zr2(Al0.2Sn0.8)C are the two first Bi and Sn containing MAX compounds. The calculated structural parameters are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The single crystal elastic constants Cij and other polycrystalline elastic coefficients have been calculated and the mechanical stabilities of these compounds have been theoretically confirmed. The bulk modulus increases and the shear modulus decreases due to partial Bi/Sn/Sb substitution for Al in Zr2AlC. The calculated elastic moduli show that these Bi/Sn/Sb containing MAX phases are more anisotropic than Zr2AlC, and have a tendency towards ductility. The Vickers hardness decreases in the Bi/Sn/Sb containing compounds. Further, the electronic band structures and electronic density of states (EDOS) are calculated and the effects of different elemental substitution on these properties are investigated. The electronic band structures show metallic characteristics with contribution predominantly coming from the Zr 4d orbitals. Partial presence of Bi/Sn/Sb atoms increases the EDOS at the Fermi level to some extent. Possible implications of the theoretical results for these recently discovered MAX nanolaminates have been discussed in detail in this paper.

Phase stability, elastic, electronic, thermal and optical properties of Ti3Al1-xSixC2 (0 LE x LE 1): First-principles study

The structural parameters with stability upon Si incorporation and elastic, electronic, thermodynamic and optical properties of Ti3Al1-xSixC2 (0 \leq x \leq 1) are investigated systematically by the plane wave psedudopotential method based on the density functional theory (DFT). The increase of some elastic parameters with increasing Si-content renders the alloys to possess higher compressive and tensile strength. The Vickers hardness value obtained with the help of Mulliken population analysis increases as x is increased from 0 to 1. The solid solutions considered are all metallic with valence and conduction bands, which have a mainly Ti 3d character, crossing the Fermi level. The temperature and pressure dependences of bulk modulus, normalized volume, specific heats, thermal expansion coefficient, and Debye temperature are all obtained through the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effects for T = 0-1000K and P = 0-50GPa. The obtained results are compared with other results where available. Further an analysis of optical functions for two polarization vectors reveals that the reflectivity is high in the visible-ultraviolet region up to ~ 10.5 eV region showing promise as good coating material. Elastic, thermodynamic, electronic and optical properties of U2Ti

An investigation of U2Ti, a potentially safe and heavy metal-based storage material for radioactive tritium for fusion reactor, has been performed using pseudopotential density functional theory. The analysis of the elastic constants and other moduli calculated for the first time shows large anisotropy on elasticity and brittle behavior. A quasi-harmonic Debye model, which considers the vibrational contribution to the total free energy of the system, has been used to investigate the finite-temperature and finite-pressure thermodynamic properties of U2Ti. The electronic band structure reveals metallic conductivity and the major contribution comes from U-5f states. By analyzing the optical spectra, the origin of the various structures is also explained in terms of the calculated electronic structure. Further the reflectivity spectrum shows that the material is perfect reflector within the energy range 8-12.5 eV. Phase stability and physical properties of hypothetical V4SiC3

We study the phase stability, mechanical, electronic, optical properties and Vicker's hardness of the newly predicted layered compound V4SiC3 using the first-principles method. This hypothetical compound is found to possess higher bulk modulus as well as higher hardness than those of a similar V4AlC3. The Mulliken bond population analysis indicates that the substitution of Al atom with the Si atom increases the Vicker's hardness of this compound. The electronic band structure shows that the conductivity is metallic and the main contribution comes from V 3d states. The partial density of states (PDOS) shows that the hybridization peak of V 3d and C 2s lies lower in energy than that of V 3d and Si 3p states which suggests that the V 3d - C 2s bond is stronger than the V 3d - Si 3p bond. The results are consistent with our bond analysis. Further we have discussed the origin of the features that appear in the optical properties. V4SiC3 is seen as a promising dielectric material showing a much better candidate material as a coating to avoid solar heating than those of V4AlC3, α-Nb4SiC3 and Ti4AlN3 compounds. Structural, elastic, electronic and optical properties of a newly predicted layered-ternary Ti4SiN3: A First-principles study

We study a newly predicted layered-ternary compound Ti4SiN3 in its α- and β-phases. We calculate their mechanical, electronic and optical properties and then compare these with those of other compounds M4AX3 (M = V, Ti, Ta; A = Si, Al; X = N, C). The results show that the hypothetical Ti4SiN3 shows an improved behavior of the resistance to shape change and uniaxial tensions and a slight elastic anisotropy. The electronic band structures for both α- and β-Ti4SiN3 show metallic conductivity in which Ti 3d states dominate. The hybridization peak of Ti 3d and N 2s lies lower in energy than that of Ti 3d and Si 3p states which suggests that the Ti 3d - N 2s bond is stronger than the Ti 3d - Si 3p bond. Using band structure we discuss the origin of different features of optical properties. The α-phase of predicted compound has improved behavior in reflectivity compared to those of similar types of compounds. Analysis of Large Scale Propagation Models for Mobile Communications in Urban Area

Channel properties influence the development of wireless communication systems. Unlike wired channels that are stationary and predictable, radio channels are extremely random and dont offer easy analysis. A Radio Propagation Model (RPM), also known as the Radio Wave Propagation Model (RWPM), is an empirical mathematical formulation for the characterization of radio wave propagation as a function of frequency. In mobile radio systems, path loss models are necessary for proper planning, interference estimations, frequency assignments and cell parameters which are the basic for network planning process as well as Location Based Services (LBS) techniques. Propagation models that predict the mean signal strength for an arbitrary transmitter receiver (T R) separation distance which is useful in estimating the radio coverage area of a transmitter are called large scale propagation models, since they characterize signal strength over large TR separation distances. In this paper, the large scale propagation performance of Okumura, Hata, and Lee models has been compared varying Mobile Station (MS) antenna height, Transmitter Receiver (TR) distance and Base Station (BS) antenna height, considering the system to operate at 900 MHz. Through the MATLAB simulation it is turned out that the Okumura model shows the better performance than that of the other large scale propagation models.
