Temperature-dependent $s_\pm \leftrightarrow s_{++}$ transitions in the multiband model for Fe-based superconductors with impurities

We study the dependence of the superconducting gaps on both the disorder and the temperature within the two-band model for iron-based materials. In the clean limit, the system is in the $s_\pm$ state with the sign-changing gaps. Scattering by nonmagnetic impurities leads to the change of sign of the smaller gap thus resulting in a transition from the $s_{\pm}$ to the $s_{++}$ state with the sign-preserving gaps. We show here that the transition is temperature-dependent, thus, there is a line of $s_\pm \to s_{++}$ transition in the temperature-disorder phase diagram. There exists a narrow range of impurity scattering rates, where the disorder-induced $s_\pm \to s_{++}$ transition occurs at low temperatures, but then the low-temperature $s_{++}$ state transforms back to the $s_\pm$ state at higher temperatures. With increasing impurity scattering rate, temperature of such $s_{++} \to s_{\pm}$ transition shifts to the critical temperature $T_c$ and only the $s_{++}$ state is left for higher amount of disorder.

Details of the disorder-induced transition between $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ states in two-band model for Fe-based superconductors

Irradiation of superconductors with different particles is one of many ways to investigate effects of disorder. Here we study the disorder-induced transition between $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ states in two-band model for Fe-based superconductors with nonmagnetic impurities. Specifically, the important question of whether the superconducting gaps during the transition change smoothly or steeply? We show that the behavior can be of either type and is controlled by the ratio of intra- and interband impurity scattering and a parameter $σ$ that represents a scattering strength and changes from zero (Born approximation) to one (unitary limit). For the pure interband scattering potential and $σ\lesssim 0.11$, the $s_\pm \to s_{++}$ transition is accompanied by the steep behavior of gaps, while for larger values of $σ$, gaps change smoothly. The steep behavior of the gaps occurs at low temperatures, $T < 0.1 T_{c0}$, otherwise it is smooth. The critical temperature $T_c$ is always a smooth function of the scattering rate in spite of the steep changes in the behavior of the gaps.

Impurities in multiband superconductors

Disorder - impurities and defects violating an ideal order - is always present in solids. It can result in interesting and sometimes unexpected effects in multiband superconductors. Especially if the superconductivity is unconventional thus having other than the usual s-wave symmetry. This paper uses the examples of iron-based pnictides and chalcogenides to examine how both nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities affect superconducting states with $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ order parameters. We show that disorder causes the transitions between $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ states and examine observable effects these transitions can produce.

Spin and charge susceptibilities of the two-orbital model within the cluster perturbation theory for Fe-based materials

Cluster perturbation theory is used to calculate band structure, spectral functions, Fermi surface, and spin and charge susceptibilities for the two-orbital model of iron pnictides with the on-site multiorbital Hubbard interactions. Susceptibilities are calculated within the approximation combining the cluster perturbation theory for the self-energy corrections and the random-phase approximation (RPA) for the vertex renormalizations. Calculations for the small values of Hubbard repulsion $U \leq 2$ confirm that the rigid band approximation and RPA for the spin and charge susceptibilities are suitable approaches for the case of weak interactions.

Spin resonance peak in Fe-based superconductors with unequal gaps

We study the spin resonance in superconducting state of iron-based materials within multiband models with two unequal gaps, $Δ_L$ and $Δ_S$, on different Fermi surface pockets. We show that due to the indirect nature of the gap entering the spin susceptibility at the nesting wave vector $\mathbf{Q}$ the total gap $\tildeΔ$ in the bare susceptibility is determined by the sum of gaps on two different Fermi surface sheets connected by $\mathbf{Q}$. For the Fermi surface geometry characteristic to the most of iron pnictides and chalcogenides, the indirect gap is either $\tildeΔ= Δ_L + Δ_S$ or $\tildeΔ= 2Δ_L$. In the $s_{++}$ state, spin excitations below $\tildeΔ$ are absent unless additional scattering mechanisms are assumed. The spin resonance appears in the $s_\pm$ superconducting state at frequency $ω_R \leq \tildeΔ$. Comparison with available inelastic neutron scattering data confirms that what is seen is the true spin resonance and not a peak inherent to the $s_{++}$ state.

Spin-orbit coupling in Fe-based superconductors

We study the spin resonance peak in recently discovered iron-based superconductors. The resonance peak observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments agrees well with predicted results for the extended $s$-wave ($s_\pm$) gap symmetry. Recent neutron scattering measurements show that there is a disparity between longitudinal and transverse components of the dynamical spin susceptibility. Such breaking of the spin-rotational invariance in the spin-liquid phase can occur due to spin-orbit coupling. We study the role of the spin-orbit interaction in the multiorbital model for Fe-pnictides and show how it affects the spin resonance feature.

Impurity-induced smearing of the spin resonance peak in Fe-based superconductors

The spin resonance peak in the iron-based superconductors is observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments and agrees well with predicted results for the extended s-wave ($s_\pm$) gap symmetry. On the basis of four-band and three-orbital tight binding models we study the effect of nonmagnetic disorder on the resonance peak. Spin susceptibility is calculated in the random phase approximation with the renormalization of the quasiparticle self-energy due to the impurity scattering in the static Born approximation. We find that the spin resonance becomes broader with the increase of disorder and its energy shifts to higher frequencies. For the same amount of disorder the spin response in the $s_\pm$ state is still distinct from that of the $s_{++}$ state.

Slow in-plane magnetoresistance oscillations in multiband quasi-two-dimensional metals

Slow oscillations (SlO) of magnetoresistance is a convenient tool to measure electronic structure parameters in quasi-two-dimensional metals. We study the possibility to apply this method to multi-band conductors, e.g. to iron-based high-temperature superconducting materials. We show that SlO can be used to measure the interlayer transfer integral in multi-band conductors similar to single-band metals. In addition, the SlO allow to measure and compare the effective masses or the electron scattering rates in various bands.

Uniform impurity scattering in two-band $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ superconductors

The $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ models for the superconducting state are subject of intense studies regarding Fe-based superconductors. Depending on the parameters, disorder may leave intact or suppress $T_c$ in these models. Here we study the special case of disorder with equal values of intra- and interband impurity potentials in the two-band $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ models. We show that this case can be considered as an isolated point and $T_c$ there has maximal damping for a wide range of parameters.

Magnetic mechanisms of pairing in strongly correlated electron system of copper oxides

The multielectron LDA+GTB approach has been developed to calculate electronic structure of strongly correlated cuprates. At low energies the effective Hamiltonian of the $t - t' - t" - {t_ \bot } - {J^ * } - {J_ \bot }$-model has been derived with parameters coming from the ab initio calculation for LSCO. The electronic structure of LSCO has been calculated self-consistently with the short-range antiferromagnetic order for various doping level. Two Lifshitz-type quantum phase transitions with Fermi surface topology changes have been found at dopings $x_{c1}=0.15$ and $x_{c2}=0.24$. Its effect on normal and superconducting properties has been calculated. The interatomic exchange parameter and its pressure dependence has been calculated within LDA+GTB scheme. The magnetic mechanisms of d-wave pairing induced by static and dynamical spin correlations are discussed. Simultaneous treatment of magnetic and phonon pairing results in the conclusion that both contributions are of the same order. For two layer cuprates like YBCO the interlayer hopping and exchange effects on the electronic structure and doping dependence of $T_c$ is discussed as well as the Coulomb interaction induced mechanism of pairing.

Unexpected impact of magnetic disorder on multiband superconductivity

We analyze how the magnetic disorder affects the properties of the two-band $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ models, which are subject of hot discussions regarding iron-based superconductors and other multiband systems like MgB$_2$. We show that there are several cases when the transition temperature $T_c$ is not fully suppressed by magnetic impurities in contrast to the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, but a saturation of $T_c$ takes place in the regime of strong disorder. These cases are: (1) the purely interband impurity scattering, (2) the unitary scattering limit. We show that in the former case the $s_\pm$ gap is preserved, while the $s_{++}$ state transforms into the $s_\pm$ state with increasing magnetic disorder. For the case (2), the gap structure remains intact.

Cuprates, Manganites, and Cobaltites: Multielectron Approach to the Band Structure

High-$T_c$ superconductors with CuO$_2$ layers, manganites La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$, and cobaltites LaCoO$_3$ present several mysteries in their physical properties. Most of them are believed to come from the strongly-correlated nature of these materials. From the theoretical viewpoint, there are many hidden rocks in making the consistent description of the band structure and low-energy physics starting from the Fermi-liquid approach. Here we discuss the alternative method -- multielectron approach to the electronic structure calculations for the Mott insulators -- called LDA+GTB (local density approximation + generalized tight-binding) method. Its origin is a straightforward generalization of the Hubbard perturbation theory in the atomic limit and the multiband $p-d$ Hamiltonian with the parameters calculated within LDA. We briefly discuss the method and focus on its applications to cuprates, manganites, and cobaltites.

Gap Symmetry in KFe_2As_2 and cos 4θgap component in LiFeAs

We revisit the issue of the gap symmetry in KFe2As2, which is an Fe-pnictide superconductor with only hole pockets. Previous theoretical studies mostly argued for a d-wave gap in KFe2As2 since transport and thermodynamic measurements point to the presence of the gap nodes. However, a d-wave gap is inconsistent with recent laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements. We propose the scenario for a nodal s-wave superconductivity induced by a non-magnetic intra-band and inter-band interactions between fermions near hole pockets. The superconducting gap changes sign between the hole pockets and has cos 4θangular dependence and accidental nodes on one or several hole pockets. We argue that strong angle dependence is the consequence of near-degeneracy between inter-pocket and intra-pocket interaction on the hole pockets. We also analyze cos 4θangular dependence of the gap in other Fe-pnictides and compare theoretical results with the photoemission experiments of LiFeAs.

Disorder induced transition between s_+- and s_++ states in two-band superconductors

We have reexamined the problem of disorder in two-band superconductors, and shown within the framework of the T-matrix approximation, that the suppression of T_c can be described by a single parameter depending on the intraband and interband impurity scattering rates. T_c is shown to be more robust against nonmagnetic impurities than would be predicted in the trivial extension of Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory. We find a disorder-induced transition from the s_{\pm} state to a gapless and then to a fully gapped s_{++} state, controlled by a single parameter -- the sign of the average coupling constant <λ> . We argue that this transition has strong implications for experiments.

Gap symmetry and structure of Fe-based superconductors

The recently discovered Fe-pnictide and chalcogenide superconductors display low-temperature properties suggesting superconducting gap structures which appear to vary substantially from family to family, and even within families as a function of doping or pressure. We propose that this apparent nonuniversality can actually be understood by considering the predictions of spin fluctuation theory and accounting for the peculiar electronic structure of these systems, coupled with the likely 'sign-changing s-wave' (s\pm) symmetry. We review theoretical aspects, materials properties and experimental evidence relevant to this suggestion, and discuss which further measurements would be useful to settle these issues.

Evolution of symmetry and structure of the gap in Fe-based superconductors with doping and interactions

We present a detailed study of the symmetry and structure of the pairing gap in Fe-based superconductors (FeSC). We treat FeSC as quasi-2D, decompose the pairing interaction in the XY plane in s-wave and d-wave channels into contributions from scattering between different Fermi surfaces and analyze how each scattering evolves with doping and input parameters. We verify that each interaction is well approximated by the lowest angular harmonics. We use this simplification to analyze the interplay between the interaction with and without spin-fluctuation components, the origin of the attraction in the s+/-and d_{x2-y2} channels, the competition between them, the angular dependence of the s+/- gaps along the electron Fermi surface, the conditions under which s+/- gap develops nodes, and the origin of superconductivity in heavily electron- or hole-doped systems, when only Fermi surfaces of one type are present. We also discuss the relation between RPA and RG approaches for FeSC.

Anisotropic quasiparticle lifetimes in Fe-based superconductors

We study the dynamical quasiparticle scattering by spin and charge fluctuations in Fe-based pnictides within a five-orbital model with on-site interactions. The leading contribution to the scattering rate is calculated from the second-order diagrams with the polarization operator calculated in the random-phase approximation. We find one-particle scattering rates which are highly anisotropic on each Fermi surface sheet due to the momentum dependence of the spin susceptibility and the multi-orbital composition of each Fermi pocket. This fact, combined with the anisotropy of the effective mass, produces disparity between electrons and holes in conductivity, the Hall coefficient, and the Raman initial slope, in qualitative agreement with experimental data.
