Magnetic structure and crystal field states of antiferromagnetic CeNiGe$_3$: Neutron scattering and $μ$SR investigations

We present the results of microscopic investigations of antiferromagnetic CeNiGe$_3$, using neutron powder diffraction (NPD), inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. CeNiGe$_3$ crystallizes in a centrosymmetric orthorhombic crystal structure (space group: $Cmmm$) and undergoes antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. The occurrence of long-range AFM ordering at $T_{\rm N} \approx 5.2$~K is confirmed by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, and $μ$SR measurements. The NPD data characterize the AFM state with an incommensurate helical magnetic structure having a propagation vector $k$ = (0, 0.41, 1/2). In addition, INS measurements at 10~K identified two crystal electric field (CEF) excitations at 9.17~meV and 18.42~meV. We analyzed the INS data using a CEF model for an orthorhombic environment of Ce$^{3+}$ ($J=5/2$) and determined the CEF parameters and ground state wavefunctions of CeNiGe$_3$. Moreover, zero-field $μ$SR data for CeNiGe$_3$ at $T< T_{\rm N}$ show long-range AFM ordering with three distinct oscillation frequencies corresponding to three different internal fields at the muon sites. The internal fields at the muon-stopping sites have been further investigated using density functional theory calculations.

Multigap Superconductivity in the Filled-Skutterudite Compound LaRu$_4$As$_{12}$ probed by muon spin rotation

Muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) were used to investigate the superconducting properties of the filled-skutterudite compound LaRu$_{4}$As$_{12}$. A two-gap isotropic ($s+s$)-wave model can explain the temperature dependence of the superfluid density. Zero field $μ$SR measurements confirm that the time-reversal symmetry does not break upon entering the superconducting state. The measurements of lattice dynamics at 2, 20 and 300 K revealed temperature dependencies of the phonon modes that do not follow strictly a hardening of phonon frequencies upon cooling as expected within the quasi-harmonic picture. The 20~K data rather mark a turning point for the majority of the phonon frequencies. Indeed a hardening is observed approaching 20~K from above, while for a few branches a weak softening is visible upon further cooling to 2~K. The observed dispersion relations of phonon modes throughout the Brillouin zone matches with the DFT prediction quite closely. Our results point out that cubic LaRu$_{4}$As$_{12}$ is a good reference material for studying multiband superconductivity, including those with lower crystallographic symmetries such as iron arsenide-based superconductors.

Quantum critical spin-liquid-like behavior in S = 1/2 quasikagome lattice CeRh1-xPdxSn investigated using muon spin relaxation and neutron scattering

We present the results of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and neutron scattering on the Ce-based quasikagome lattice CeRh$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$Sn ($x=0.1$ to 0.75). Our ZF-$μ$SR results reveal the absence of static long-range magnetic order down to 0.05~K in $x = 0.1$ single crystals. The weak temperature-dependent plateaus of the dynamic spin fluctuations below 0.2~K in ZF-$μ$SR together with its longitudinal-field (LF) dependence between 0 and 3~kG indicate the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at $T$ = 0.05~K without static magnetic order. On the other hand, $C_{\text{4f}}$/$T$ increases as --log $T$ on cooling below 0.9~K, passes through a broad maximum at 0.13~K and slightly decreases on further cooling. The ac-susceptibility also exhibits a frequency independent broad peak at 0.16~K, which is prominent with an applied field $H$ along $c$-direction. We, therefore, argue that such a behavior for $x=0.1$ (namely, a plateau in spin relaxation rate ($λ$) below 0.2~K and a linear $T$ dependence in $C_{\text{4f}}$ below 0.13~K) can be attributed to a metallic spin-liquid (SL) ground state near the quantum critical point in the frustrated Kondo lattice. The LF-$μ$SR study suggests that the out of kagome plane spin fluctuations are responsible for the SL behavior. Low energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) of $x$ = 0.1 reveals gapless magnetic excitations, which are also supported by the behavior of $C_{\text{4f}}$ proportional to $T^{1.1}$ down to 0.06~K.

Gradual pressure-induced enhancement of magnon excitations in CeCoSi

CeCoSi is an intermetallic antiferromagnet with a very unusual temperature-pressure phase diagram: at ambient pressure it orders below $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 8.8$ K, while application of hydrostatic pressure induces a new magnetically ordered phase with exceptionally high transition temperature of $\sim40$ K at 1.5 GPa. We studied the magnetic properties and the pressure-induced magnetic phase of CeCoSi by means of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and heat capacity measurements. At ambient pressure CeCoSi orders into a simple commensurate AFM structure with a reduced ordered moment of only $m_{\mathrm{Ce}} = 0.37(6)$ $μ_{\mathrm{B}}$. Specific heat and low-energy INS indicate a significant gap in the low-energy magnon excitation spectrum in the antiferromagnetic phase, with the CEF excitations located above 10 meV. Hydrostatic pressure gradually shifts the energy of the magnon band towards higher energies, and the temperature dependence of the magnons measured at 1.5 GPa is consistent with the phase diagram. Moreover, the CEF excitations are also drastically modified under pressure.

Understanding the magnetism in noncentrosymmetric CeIrGe3: Muon spin relaxation and neutron scattering studies

The magnetic properties of a pressure induced noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrGe$_3$ have been investigated by muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR), powder neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) techniques at ambient pressure. For completeness we have also measured the ac magnetic susceptibility $χ_{\rm ac}(T)$, dc magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, dc isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ and heat capacity $C_{\rm p}(T,H)$ down to 2 K. CeIrGe$_{3}$ is known to exhibit pressure induced superconductivity ($T_{\rm c}\approx 1.5$ K) at a pressure of 20 GPa and antiferromagnetic ordering at 8.7 K, 4.7 K and 0.7 K at ambient pressure. Our $χ_{\rm ac}(T)$ and $χ(T)$ data show an additional anomaly near 6.2 K which is also captured in $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data. From $χ_{\rm ac}(T)$, $χ(T)$ and $C_{\rm p}(T)$ measurements we infer three antiferromagnetic transitions above 2 K at $T_{\rm N1}= 8.5$ K, $T_{\rm N2}= 6.0$ K and $T_{\rm N3}= 4.6$ K. Our $μ$SR study also confirms the presence of three transitions through the observation of one frequency for $T_{\rm N2} < T\leq T_{\rm N1}$, two frequencies for $T_{\rm N3} < T\leq T_{\rm N2}$ and three frequencies for $T\leq T_{\rm N3}$ in the oscillatory asymmetry. The ND data reveal an incommensurate nature of the magnetic ordering at $T=7$ K with the propagation vector k = (0,0,0.688(3)), and a commensurate magnetic structure at $T=1.5$ K with the propagation vector locked to the value k = (0,0,2/3) and magnetic moments oriented along the $c$ axis. The commensurate structure couples a macroscopic ferromagnetic component, resulting in a strong dependence of the lock-in transition temperature on external magnetic field. The INS data show two well defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations arising from the CEF-split Kramers doublet ground state of Ce$^{3+}$.

Contrasting chemical pressure effect on the moment direction in the Kondo semiconductor CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru,Os)

The opening of a spin gap in the orthorhombic compounds CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru and Os) is followed by antiferromagnetic ordering at $T_N$ = 27 K and 28.5 K, respectively, with a small ordered moment (0.29$-$0.34$μ_B$) along the $c-$axis, which is not an easy axis of the crystal field (CEF). In order to investigate how the moment direction and the spin gap energy change with 10\% La doping in Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$T$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru and Os) and also to understand the microscopic nature of the magnetic ground state, we here report on magnetic, transport, and thermal properties, neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations on these compounds. Our INS study reveals the persistence of spin gaps of 7 meV and 10 meV in the 10\% La-doped T = Ru and Os compounds, respectively. More interestingly our ND study shows a very small ordered moment of 0.18 $μ_B$ along the $b-$axis (moment direction changed compared with the undoped compound), in Ce$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$Ru$_2$Al$_{10}$, however a moment of 0.23 $μ_B$ still along the $c-$axis in Ce$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$Os$_2$Al$_{10}$. This contrasting behavior can be explained by a different degree of hybridization in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ and CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$, being stronger in the latter than in the former. Muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) studies on Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$Ru$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7), reveal the presence of coherent frequency oscillations indicating a long$-$range magnetically ordered ground state for $x$ = 0 to 0.5, but an almost temperature independent Kubo$-$Toyabe response between 45 mK and 4 K for $x$ = 0.7. We will compare the results of the present investigations with those reported on the electron and hole$-$doping in CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Muon spin rotation and neutron scattering study of the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal compound CeAuAl3

We have investigated the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal heavy-fermion compound CeAuAl3 using muon spin rotation (muSR), neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. We have also revisited the magnetic, transport and thermal properties. The magnetic susceptibility reveals an antiferromagnetic transition at 1.1 K with a possibility of another magnetic transition near 0.18 K. The heat capacity shows a sharp lambda-type anomaly at 1.1 K in zero-filed, which broadens and moves to higher temperature in applied magnetic field. Our zero-field muSR and ND measurements confirm the existence of a long-range magnetic ground state below 1.2 K. Further the ND study reveals an incommensurate magnetic ordering with a magnetic propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0.52) and a spiral structure of Ce moments coupled ferromagnetically within the ab-plane. Our INS study reveals the presence of two well-defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations at 5.1 meV and 24.6 meV in the paramagnetic phase of CeAuAl3 which can be explained on the basis of the CEF theory. Furthermore, low energy quasi-elastic excitations show a Gaussian line shape below 30 K compared to a Lorentzian line shape above 30 K, indicating a slowdown of spin fluctuation below 30 K. We have estimated a Kondo temperature of TK=3.5 K from the quasi-elastic linewidth, which is in good agreement with that estimated from the heat capacity. This study also indicates the absence of any CEF-phonon coupling unlike that observed in isostructural CeCuAl3. The CEF parameters, energy level scheme and their wave functions obtained from the analysis of INS data explain satisfactorily the single crystal susceptibility in the presence of two-ion anisotropic exchange interaction in CeAuAl3.

Neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation measurements of the non-centrosymmetric antiferromagnet CeCoGe3

The magnetic states of the non-centrosymmetric, pressure induced superconductor CeCoGe3 have been studied with magnetic susceptibility, muon spin relaxation(muSR), single crystal neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). CeCoGe3 exhibits three magnetic phase transitions at T_N1 = 21 K, T_N2 = 12 K and T_N3 = 8 K. The presence of long range magnetic order below T_N1 is revealed by the observation of oscillations of the asymmetry in the muSR spectra between 13 K and 20 K and a sharp increase in the muon depolarization rate. Single crystal neutron diffraction measurements reveal magnetic Bragg peaks consistent with propagation vectors of k = 2/3 between T_N1 and T_N2, k = 5/8between T_N2 and T_N3 and k = 1/2 below T_N3. An increase in intensity of the (1 1 0) reflection between T_N1 and T_N3 also indicates a ferromagnetic component in these phases. These measurements are consistent with an equal moment, two-up, two-down magnetic structure below T_N3, with a magnetic moment of 0.405(5) mu_B/Ce. Above T_N2, the results are consistent with an equal moment, two-up, one-down structure with a moment of 0.360(6) mu_B/Ce. INS studies reveal two crystal-field (CEF) excitations at 19 and 27 meV. From an analysis with a CEF model, the wave-functions of the J = 5/2 multiplet are evaluated along with a prediction for the magnitude and direction of the ground state magnetic moment. Our model correctly predicts that the moments order along the c axis but the observed magnetic moment of 0.405(5) mu_B is reduced compared to the predicted moment of 1.01 mu_B. This is ascribed to hybridization between the localized Ce^3+ f-electrons and the conduction band. This suggests that CeCoGe3 has a degree of hybridization between that of CeRhGe3 and the non-centrosymmetric superconductor CeRhSi3.

Evolution of quantum criticality in the system CeNi9Ge4

The heavy fermion system CeNi9Ge4 exhibits a paramagnetic ground state with remarkable features such as: a record value of the electronic specific heat coefficient in systems with a paramagnetic ground state, γ= C/T \simeq 5.5 J/molK^2 at 80 mK, a temperature-dependent Sommerfeld-Wilson ratio, R=χ/γ, below 1 K and an approximate single ion scaling of the 4f-magnetic specific heat and susceptibility. These features are related to a rather small Kondo energy scale of a few Kelvin in combination with a quasi-quartet crystal field ground state. Tuning the system towards long range magnetic order is accomplished by replacing a few at.% of Ni by Cu or Co. Specific heat, susceptibility and resistivity studies reveal T_N \sim 0.2 K for CeNi8CuGe4 and T_N \sim 1 K for CeNi8CoGe4. To gain insight whether the transition from the paramagnetic NFL state to the magnetically ordered ground state is connected with a heavy fermion quantum critical point we performed specific heat and ac susceptibility studies and utilized the μSR technique and quasi-elastic neutron scattering.

Spin dynamics of frustrated easy-axis triangular antiferromagnet 2H-AgNiO2 explored by inelastic neutron scattering

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the spin dynamics in the layered hexagonal magnet 2H-AgNiO2 which has stacked triangular layers of antiferromagnetically-coupled Ni2+ spins (S=1) ordered in a collinear alternating stripe pattern. We observe a broad band of magnetic excitations above a small gap of 1.8 meV and extending up to 7.5 meV, indicating strongly dispersive excitations. The measured dispersions of the boundaries of the powder-averaged spectrum can be quantitatively explained by a linear spin-wave dispersion for triangular layers with antiferromagnetic nearest- and weak next-nearest neighbor couplings, a strong easy-axis anisotropy and additional weak inter-layer couplings. The resulting dispersion relation has global minima not at magnetic Bragg wavevectors but at symmetry-related soft points and we attribute this anomalous feature to the strong competition between the easy-axis anisotropy and the frustrated antiferromagnetic couplings. We have also calculated the quantum corrections to the dispersion relation to order 1/S in spin-wave theory by extending the work of Chubukov and Jolicoeur [Phys. Rev. B v46, 11137 (1992)] and find that the presence of easy-axis anisotropy significantly reduces the quantum renormalizations predicted for the isotropic model.

Charge disproportionation and collinear magnetic order in the frustrated triangular antiferromagnet AgNiO2

We report a high-resolution neutron diffraction study of the crystal and magnetic structure of the orbitally-degenerate frustrated metallic magnet AgNiO2. At high temperatures the structure is hexagonal with a single crystallographic Ni site, low-spin Ni3+ with spin-1/2 and two-fold orbital degeneracy, arranged in an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice with frustrated spin and orbital order. A structural transition occurs upon cooling below 365 K to a tripled hexagonal unit cell containing three crystallographically-distinct Ni sites with expanded and contracted NiO6 octahedra, naturally explained by spontaneous charge order on the Ni triangular layers. No Jahn-Teller distortions occur, suggesting that charge order occurs in order to lift the orbital degeneracy. Symmetry analysis of the inferred Ni charge order pattern and the observed oxygen displacement pattern suggests that the transition could be mediated by charge fluctuations at the Ni sites coupled to a soft oxygen optical phonon breathing mode. At low temperatures the electron-rich Ni sublattice (assigned to a valence close to Ni2+ with S = 1) orders magnetically into a collinear stripe structure of ferromagnetic rows ordered antiferromagnetically in the triangular planes. We discuss the stability of this uncommon spin order pattern in the context of an easy-axis triangular antiferromagnet with additional weak second neighbor interactions and interlayer couplings.

Quasielastic neutron scattering of hydrated BaZr_{0.90}A_{0.10}O_{2.95} (A = Y and Sc)

Proton motions in hydrated proton conducting perovskites BaZr_{0.90}A_{0.10}O_{2.95} (A = Y and Sc) have been investigated using quasielastic neutron scattering. The results reveal a localized motion on the ps time scale and with an activation energy of ~10-30 meV, in both materials. The temperature dependence of the total mean square displacement of the protons suggests an onset of this motion at a temperature of about 300 K. Comparison of the QENS results to density functional theory calculations suggests that for both materials this motion can be ascribed to intra-octahedral proton transfers occurring close to a dopant atom. The low activation energy, more than ten times lower than the activation energy for the macroscopic proton conductivity, suggests that this motion is not the rate-limiting process for the long-range proton diffusion, i.e. it is not linked to the two materials significantly different proton conductivities.

On the heterogeneous character of water's amorphous polymorphism

In this letter we report {\it in situ} small--angle neutron scattering results on the high--density (HDA) and low-density amorphous (LDA) ice structures and on intermediate structures as found during the temperature induced transformation of HDA into LDA. We show that the small--angle signal is characterised by two $Q$ regimes featuring different properties ($Q$ is the modulus of the scattering vector defined as $Q = 4π\sin{(Θ)}/λ_{\rm i}$ with $Θ$ being half the scattering angle and $λ_{\rm i}$ the incident neutron wavelength). The very low--$Q$ regime ($< 5\times 10^{-2}$ Å$^{-1}$) is dominated by a Porod--limit scattering. Its intensity reduces in the course of the HDA to LDA transformation following a kinetics reminiscent of that observed in wide--angle diffraction experiments. The small--angle neutron scattering formfactor in the intermediate regime of $5 \times 10^{-2} < Q < 0.5$ Å$^{-1}$ HDA and LDA features a rather flat plateau. However, the HDA signal shows an ascending intensity towards smaller $Q$ marking this amorphous structure as heterogeneous. When following the HDA to LDA transition the formfactor shows a pronounced transient excess in intensity marking all intermediate structures as strongly heterogeneous on a length scale of some nano--meters.

The Influence of Chemical Short Range Order on Atomic Diffusion in Al-Ni Melts

We use inelastic neutron scattering and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to investigate the chemical short range order (CSRO), visible through prepeaks in the structure factors, and its relation to self diffusion in Al-Ni melts. As a function of composition at 1795K Ni self diffusion coefficients from experiment and simulation exhibit a non-linear dependence with a pronounced increase on the Al-rich side. This comes along with a change in CSRO with increasing Al content that is related to a more dense packing of the atoms in Ni-rich Al-Ni systems.

Crystal-like high frequency phonons in the amorphous phases of solid water

The high frequency dynamics of low- (LDA) and high-density amorphous-ice (HDA) and of cubic ice (I_c) has been measured by inelastic X-ray Scattering (IXS) in the 1-15 nm^{-1} momentum transfer (Q) range. Sharp phonon-like excitations are observed, and the longitudinal acoustic branch is identified up to Q = 8nm^{-1} in LDA and I_c and up to 5nm^{-1} in HDA. The narrow width of these excitations is in sharp contrast with the broad features observed in all amorphous systems studied so far. The "crystal-like" behavior of amorphous ices, therefore, implies a considerable reduction in the number of decay channels available to sound-like excitations which is assimilated to low local disorder.
