Real spectral shift functions for pairs of contractions and pairs of dissipative operators

Recently the authors solved a long-standing problem and showed that for an arbitrary pair of contractions on Hilbert space with trace class difference has an integrable spectral shift function on the unit circle ${\Bbb T}$ and an analogue of the Lifshits--Krein trace formula holds. It is also known that it may happen that there is no real-values integrable spectral shift function. In this paper we find conditions under which a pair of contractions with trace class difference has {\it a real-valued integrable} spectral shift function. We also consider a similar problem for pairs of dissipative operators. Finally, we find an application of the results in question to dissipative Schrödinger operators.

Boundary triplets, tensor products and point contacts to reservoirs

We consider symmetric operators of the form $S := A\otimes I_{\mathfrak T} + I_{\mathfrak H} \otimes T$ where $A$ is symmetric and $T = T^*$ is (in general) unbounded. Such operators naturally arise in problems of simulating point contacts to reservoirs. We construct a boundary triplet $Π_S$ for $S^*$ preserving the tensor structure. The corresponding $γ$-field and Weyl function are expressed by means of the $γ$-field and Weyl function corresponding to the boundary triplet $Π_A$ for $A^*$ and the spectral measure of $T$. Applications to 1-D Schrödinger and Dirac operators are given. A model of electron transport through a quantum dot assisted by cavity photons is proposed. In this model the boundary operator is chosen to be the well-known Jaynes-Cumming operator which is regarded as the Hamiltonian of the quantum dot.

Analytic operator Lipschitz functions in the disk and a trace formula for functions of contractions

In this paper we prove that for an arbitrary pair $\{T_1,T_0\}$ of contractions on Hilbert space with trace class difference, there exists a function $\boldsymbolξ$ in $L^1({\Bbb T})$ (called a spectral shift function for the pair $\{T_1,T_0\}$ ) such that the trace formula $\operatorname{trace}(f(T_1)-f(T_0))=\int_{\Bbb T} f'(ζ)\boldsymbolξ(ζ)\,dζ$) holds for an arbitrary operator Lipschitz function $f$ analytic in the unit disk.

On the completeness of the system of root vectors for first-order systems

The paper is concerned with the completeness problem of root functions of general boundary value problems for first order systems of ordinary differential equations. Namely, we introduce and investigate the class of \emph{weakly regular boundary conditions}. We show that this class is much broader than the class of {\em regular boundary conditions} introduced by G.D. Birkhoff and R.E. Langer. Our main result states that the system of root functions of a boundary value problem is complete and minimal provided that the boundary conditions are weakly regular. Moreover, we show that in some cases \emph{the weak regularity} of boundary conditions \emph{is also necessary} for the completeness. Also we investigate the completeness for $2\times 2$ Dirac and Dirac type equations subject to irregular or even to degenerate boundary conditions. We emphasize that our results are the first results on the completeness problem for general first order systems even in the case of regular boundary conditions.

Elliptic and weakly coercive systems of operators in Sobolev spaces

It is known that an elliptic system $\{P_j(x,D)\}_1^N$ of order $l$ is weakly coercive in $\overset{\circ}{W}\rule{0pt}{2mm}^l_\infty(\mathbb R^n)$, that is, all differential monomials of order $\le l-1$ on $C_0^\infty(\mathbb R^n)$-functions are subordinated to this system in the $L^\infty$-norm. Conditions for the converse result are found and other properties of weakly coercive systems are investigated. An analogue of the de Leeuw-Mirkil theorem is obtained for operators with variable coefficients: it is shown that an operator $P(x,D)$ in $n\ge 3$ variables with constant principal part is weakly coercive in $\overset{\circ}{W}\rule{0pt}{2mm}_\infty^l(\mathbb R^n)$ if and only if it is elliptic. A similar result is obtained for systems $\{P_j(x,D)\}_1^N$ with constant coefficients under the condition $n\ge 2N+1$ and with several restrictions on the symbols $P_j(ξ)$ . A complete description of differential polynomials in two variables which are weakly coercive in $\overset{\circ}{W}\rule{0pt}{2mm}_\infty^l(\mathbb R^2)$ is given. Wide classes of systems with constant coefficients which are weakly coercive in $\overset{\circ}{W}\rule{0pt}{2mm}_\infty^l(\mathbb \R^n)$, but non-elliptic are constructed.

On the Spectral Analysis of Direct Sums of Riemann-Liouville Operators in Sobolev Spaces of Vector Functions

Let $J_k^α$ be a real power of the integration operator $J_k$ defined on Sobolev space $W_p^k[0,1]$. We investigate the spectral properties of the operator $A_k=\bigoplus_{j=1}^n λ_j J_k^α$ defined on $\bigoplus_{j=1}^n W_p^k[0,1]$. Namely, we describe the commutant $\{A_k\}'$, the double commutant $\{A_k\}''$ and the algebra $\Alg A_k$. Moreover, we describe the lattices $\Lat A_k$ and $\Hyplat A_k$ of invariant and hyperinvariant subspaces of $A_k$, respectively. We also calculate the spectral multiplicity $μ_{A_k}$ of $A_k$ and describe the set $\Cyc A_k$ of its cyclic subspaces. In passing, we present a simple counterexample for the implication \Hyplat(A\oplus B)=\Hyplat A\oplus \Hyplat B\Rightarrow \Lat(A\oplus B)=\Lat A\oplus \Lat B to be valid.

Scattering Theory for Open Quantum Systems

Quantum systems which interact with their environment are often modeled by maximal dissipative operators or so-called Pseudo-Hamiltonians. In this paper the scattering theory for such open systems is considered. First it is assumed that a single maximal dissipative operator $A_D$ in a Hilbert space $\sH$ is used to describe an open quantum system. In this case the minimal self-adjoint dilation $\widetilde K$ of $A_D$ can be regarded as the Hamiltonian of a closed system which contains the open system $\{A_D,\sH\}$, but since $\widetilde K$ is necessarily not semibounded from below, this model is difficult to interpret from a physical point of view. In the second part of the paper an open quantum system is modeled with a family $\{A(μ)\}$ of maximal dissipative operators depending on energy $μ$, and it is shown that the open system can be embedded into a closed system where the Hamiltonian is semibounded. Surprisingly it turns out that the corresponding scattering matrix can be completely recovered from scattering matrices of single Pseudo-Hamiltonians as in the first part of the paper. The general results are applied to a class of Sturm-Liouville operators arising in dissipative and quantum transmitting Schrödinger-Poisson systems.

Indefinite Sturm-Liouville operators $ (\sgn x) (- \frac{d^2}{dx^2} +q(x))$ with finite-zone potentials

The indefinite Sturm-Liouville operator $A = (\sgn x)(-d^2/dx^2+q(x))$ is studied. It is proved that similarity of $A$ to a selfadjoint operator is equivalent to integral estimates of Cauchy integrals. Also similarity conditions in terms of Weyl functions are given. For operators with a finite-zone potential, the components $\Aess$ and $\Adisc$ of $A$ corresponding to essential and discrete spectrums, respectively, are considered. A criterion of similarity of $\Aess$ to a selfadjoint operator is given in terms of Weyl functions for the Sturm-Liouville operator $-d^2/dx^2+q(x)$ with a finite-zone potential $q$. Jordan structure of the operator $\Adisc$ is described. We present an example of the operator $A = (\sgn x)(-d^2/dx^2+q(x))$ such that $A$ is nondefinitizable and $A$ is similar to a normal operator.
