A hybrid method for determining particle masses at the Large Hadron Collider with fully identified cascade decays

A new technique for improving the precision of measurements of SUSY particle masses at the LHC is introduced. The technique involves kinematic fitting of events with two fully identified decay chains. We incorporate both event ETmiss constraints and independent constraints provided by kinematic end-points in experiment invariant mass distributions of SUSY decay products. Incorporation of the event specific information maximises the information used in the fit and is shown to reduce the mass measurement uncertainites by ~30% compared to conventional fitting of experiment end-point constraints for the SPS1a benchmark model.

Physics Beyond the Standard Model: Supersymmetry

This collection of studies on new physics at the LHC constitutes the report of the supersymmetry working group at the Workshop `Physics at TeV Colliders', Les Houches, France, 2007. They cover the wide spectrum of phenomenology in the LHC era, from alternative models and signatures to the extraction of relevant observables, the study of the MSSM parameter space and finally to the interplay of LHC observations with additional data expected on a similar time scale. The special feature of this collection is that while not each of the studies is explicitely performed together by theoretical and experimental LHC physicists, all of them were inspired by and discussed in this particular environment.

New Physics at the LHC: A Les Houches Report. Physics at Tev Colliders 2007 -- New Physics Working Group

We present a collection of signatures for physics beyond the standard model that need to be explored at the LHC. The signatures are organized according to the experimental objects that appear in the final state, and in particular the number of high pT leptons. Our report, which includes brief experimental and theoretical reviews as well as original results, summarizes the activities of the "New Physics'' working group for the "Physics at TeV Colliders" workshop (Les Houches, France, 11-29 June, 2007).

Constraining Dark Matter in the MSSM at the LHC

In the event that R-Parity conserving supersymmetry (SUSY) is discovered at the LHC, a key issue which will need to be addressed will be the consistency of that signal with astrophysical and non-accelerator constraints on SUSY Dark Matter. This issue is studied for the SPA benchmark model based on measurements of end-points and thresholds in the invariant mass spectra of various combinations of leptons and jets. These measurements are used to constrain the soft SUSY breaking parameters at the electroweak scale in a general MSSM model. Based on these constraints, we assess the accuracy with which the Dark Matter relic density can be measured.

Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis: SPA Convention and Project

High-precision analyses of supersymmetry parameters aim at reconstructing the fundamental supersymmetric theory and its breaking mechanism. A well defined theoretical framework is needed when higher-order corrections are included. We propose such a scheme, Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis SPA, based on a consistent set of conventions and input parameters. A repository for computer programs is provided which connect parameters in different schemes and relate the Lagrangian parameters to physical observables at LHC and high energy e+e- linear collider experiments, i.e., masses, mixings, decay widths and production cross sections for supersymmetric particles. In addition, programs for calculating high-precision low energy observables, the density of cold dark matter (CDM) in the universe as well as the cross sections for CDM search experiments are included. The SPA scheme still requires extended efforts on both the theoretical and experimental side before data can be evaluated in the future at the level of the desired precision. We take here an initial step of testing the SPA scheme by applying the techniques involved to a specific supersymmetry reference point.

Physics Interplay of the LHC and the ILC

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Possible topics for future studies are outlined.

A New SUSY mass reconstruction method at the CERN LHC

We propose a new mass reconstruction technique for SUSY processes at the LHC. The idea is to completely solve the kinematics of the SUSY cascade decay by using the assumption that the selected events satisfy the same mass shell conditions of the sparticles involved in the cascade decay. Using this technique, we study the measurement of the mass of the bottom squarks in the cascade decay of the gluino. Based on the final state including two high p_T leptons and two b-jets, we investigate different possible approaches to the mass reconstruction of the gluino and the two bottom squarks. In particular we evaluate the performance of different algorithms in discriminating two bottom squark states with a mass difference as low as 5%.

Susy searches in combined LHC/LC analyses

We present a case study for the synergy of combined LHC and LC analyses in Susy searches in which simultaneous running of both machines is very important. In this study only light non-coloured Susy particles are accessible at a Linear Collider with an initial energy of $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV. Nevertheless the precise analysis at the LC leads to an accurate Susy parameter determination and prediction of heavy Susy particles. Providing these LC results as input for the LHC analyses could be crucial for the identification of signals resulting in a direct measurement of the heavy neutralinos. The interplay of the LHC and LC will thus provide an important consistency test of the underlying model.

Study of the slepton non-universality at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

In supersymmetric theory, the sfermion-fermion-gaugino interactions conserve the chirality of (s)fermions. The effect appears as the charge asymmetry in $m(jl)$ distributions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider where jets and leptons arise from the cascade decay $\tilde{q} \to q \tildeχ^0_2 \to ql\tilde{l}$. Furthermore, the decay branching ratios and the charge asymmetries in $m(jl)$ distributions are flavor non-universal due to the $\tilde{l}_L$ and $\tilde{l}_R$ mixing. When $\tanβ$ is large, the non-universality between $e$ and $μ$ becomes $O(10)%$ level. We perform a Monte Carlo simulation for some minimal supergravity benchmark points to demonstrate the detectability.

Proposal for a New Reconstruction Technique for SUSY Processes at the LHC

When several sparticle masses are known, the kinematics of SUSY decay processes observed at the LHC can be solved if the cascade decays contain sufficient steps. We demonstrate four examples of this full reconstruction technique applied to channels involving leptons, namely a) gluino mass determination, b) sbottom mass determination, c) LSP momentum reconstruction, and d) heavy higgs mass determination.

Measuring the Mass of the Lightest Chargino at the CERN LHC

Results are presented of a feasibility study of techniques for measuring the mass of the lightest chargino at the CERN LHC. These results suggest that for one particular mSUGRA model a statistically significant chargino signal can be identified and the chargino mass reconstructed with a precision of order 11% for of order 100 fb-1 of data.

SUSY Parameter Determination in Combined Analyses at LHC/LC

We demonstrate how the interplay of a future e^+e^- LC at its first stage with sqrt{s} sim 500 GeV and of the LHC could lead to a precise determination of the fundamental SUSY parameters in the gaugino/higgsino sector without assuming a specific supersymmetry breaking scheme. We demonstrate this for the benchmark scenario SPS1a, taking into account realistic errors for the masses and cross sections measured at the LC with polarised beams, including errors coming from polarisation measurements, and mass measurements at the LHC. The results clearly demonstrate the complementarity of the LHC and LC, and the benefit from the joint analyses of their data.

Neutralino Warm Dark Matter

In the supersymmetric (SUSY) standard model, the lightest neutralino may be the lightest SUSY particle (LSP), and it is is a candidate of the dark matter in the universe. The LSP dark matter might be produced by the non-thermal process such as heavy particle decay after decoupling of the thermal relic LSP. If the produced LSP is relativistic, and does not scatter enough in the thermal bath, the neutralino LSP may contribute as the warm dark matter (WDM) to wash out the small scale structure of O(0.1) Mpc. In this letter we calculate the energy reduction of the neutralino LSP in the thermal bath and study whether the LSP can be the WDM. If temperature of the production time T_I is smaller than 5MeV, the bino-like LSP can be the WDM and may contribute to the small-scale structure of O(0.1) Mpc. The Higgsino-like LSP might also work as the WDM if T_I< 2MeV. The wino-like LSP cannot be the WDM in the favoured parameter region.

Supersymmetry and Future Colliders

In this talk, I review precision SUSY study at LHC and TeV scale e+e- linear colliders (LC). We discuss the study of the 3 body decay of the second lightest neutralino χ^0_2--> χ^0_1 ll or the 2 body decay χ^0_2-->\tilde{l}l at LHC. In the former case, the whole m_{ll} distribution observed at LHC would constrain ino mixing and slepton masses. On the other hand, when \tilde{l}l decay is open, the distribution of the asymmetry of the transverse momentum of lepton pair A_T= p_{T1}/p_{T2} peaks at A_E=p_{1}/p_{2} in χ^0_2 rest frame for m_{ll} << m^{max}_{ll} samples, providing another model independent information. The peak position and the edge of the m_{ll} distribution constrain m_{χ^0_2}, m_χ^0_1} and m_{\tilde{l}}. Slepton mass universality may be checked within a few % in the early stage of the experiment. Finally I discuss the physics at TeVscale LC. The mass and couplings of sparticles will be measured withinO(1%) error, and measurement of the radiative correction to the ino-slepton-lepton coupling will determine the first generation squark mass scale even in decoupling scenarios.

Production and Decay of Scalar Stoponium Bound States

In this paper we discuss possible signatures for the production of scalar \stst\ (stoponium) bound states \sigst\ at hadron colliders, where \st\ is the lighter scalar top eigenstate. We first study the decay of \sigst; explicit expressions are given for all potentially important decay modes. If \st\ has unsuppressed two--body decays, they will always overwhelm the annihilation decays of \sigst. Among the latter, we find that usually either the $gg$ or $hh$ final state dominates, depending on the size of the off--diagonal entry of the stop mass matrix; $h$ is the lighter neutral scalar Higgs boson of the minimal supersymmetric model. If \msig\ happens to be close to the mass of one of the neutral scalar Higgs bosons, $Q \bar{Q}$ final states dominate ($Q=b$ or $t$). \ww\ and $ZZ$ final states are subdominant. We argue that $\sigst \rightarrow \gamgam$ decays offer the best signal for stoponium production at hadron colliders. The tevatron should be able to close the light stop window left open by LEP searches, but its mass reach is limited to $\msig \leq 90$ GeV. In contrast, at the LHC one should ultimately be able to probe the region $\msig \leq 700$ GeV, if the $hh$ partial width is not too large. We also comment on the feasibility of searching for \sigst\ production at hadron colliders in the $ZZ, \ Z γ$ and \fourtau\ final states, and briefly mention \sigst\ production at \gamgam\ colliders.

A new signal for scalar top bound state production

We study the production and decay of a scalar \stst\ bound state \sigst\ at hadron supercolliders, where \st\ is the lighter stop eigenstate. If \st\ has no tree--level 2--body decays, the dominant decay modes of \sigst\ are $gg$ or, if $m_h < \mst \ll \mstt$, a pair of light scalar Higgs bosons $h$. Nevertheless the branching ratio into two photons is often large enough to yield a detectable signal.
