Antisymmetric and other subleading corrections to scaling in the local potential approximation

For systems in the universality class of the three-dimensional Ising model we compute the critical exponents in the local potential approximation (LPA), that is, in the framework of the Wegner-Houghton equation. We are mostly interested in antisymmetric corrections to scaling, which are relatively poorly studied. We find the exponent for the leading antisymmetric correction to scaling $ω_A \approx 1.691$ in the LPA. This high value implies that such corrections cannot explain asymmetries observed in some Monte Carlo simulations.

Three-dimensional Ising model in the fixed-magnetization ensemble: a Monte Carlo study

We study the three-dimensional Ising model at the critical point in the fixed-magnetization ensemble, by means of the recently developed geometric cluster Monte Carlo algorithm. We define a magnetic-field-like quantity in terms of microscopic spin-up and spin-down probabilities in a given configuration of neighbors. In the thermodynamic limit, the relation between this field and the magnetization reduces to the canonical relation M(h). However, for finite systems, the relation is different. We establish a close connection between this relation and the probability distribution of the magnetization of a finite-size system in the canonical ensemble.

Probability distribution of the order parameter for the 3D Ising model universality class: a high precision Monte Carlo study

We study the probability distribution P(M) of the order parameter (average magnetization) M, for the finite-size systems at the critical point. The systems under consideration are the 3-dimensional Ising model on a simple cubic lattice, and its 3-state generalization known to have remarkably small corrections to scaling. Both models are studied in a cubic box with periodic boundary conditions. The model with reduced corrections to scaling makes it possible to determine P(M) with unprecedented precision. We also obtain a simple, but remarkably accurate approximate formula describing the universal shape of P(M).

Effective Potential for Scalar Field in Three Dimensions: Ising Model in the Ferromagnetic Phase

We compute the effective potential $V_{\rm eff}(ϕ)$ for one-component real scalar field $ϕ$ in three Euclidean dimensions (3D) in the case of spontaneously broken symmetry, from the Monte Carlo simulation of the 3D Ising model in external field at temperatures approaching the phase transition from below. We study probability distributions of the order parameter on the lattices from $30^3$ to $74^3$, at $L/ξ\approx 10$. We find that, in close analogy with the symmetric case, $ϕ^6$ plays an important role: $V_{\rm eff}(ϕ)$ is very well approximated by the sum of $ϕ^2$, $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ terms. An unexpected feature is the negative sign of the $ϕ^4$ term. As close to the continuum limit as we can get ($ξ\approx 7.2$), we obtain $$ {\cal L}_{\rm eff} \approx {1 \over 2} \partial_μϕ\partial_μϕ+ 1.7 (ϕ^2 - η^2)^2 (ϕ^2 + η^2). $$ We also compute several universal coupling constants and ratios, including the combination of critical amplitudes $C^- (f_1^-)^{-3} B^{-2}$.

The universal effective potential for three-dimensional massive scalar field theory from the Monte Carlo study of the Ising model

We study the low-energy effective action $S_{eff}[φ]$ for the one-component real scalar field theory in three Euclidean dimensions in the symmetric phase, concentrating on its static part --- effective potential $V_{eff}(φ)$. It characterizes the approach to the phase transition in all systems that belong to the 3d Ising universality class. We compute it from the probability distributions of the average magnetization in the 3d Ising model in a homogeneous external field, obtained by Monte Carlo. We find that the $φ^6$ term in $V_{eff}$ is important, while the higher terms can be neglected within our statistical errors. Thus we obtain the approximate effective action $$ S_{eff} = \int d^3 x \left\{ {1 \over 2} \partial_μφ\partial_μφ+ {1 \over 2} m^2 φ^2 + m g_4 φ^4 + g_6 φ^6 \right\} , $$ with arbitrary mass $m$ that sets the scale, and dimensionless couplings $g_4 = 0.97 \pm 0.02$ and $g_6 = 2.05 \pm 0.15$. The value of $g_4$ is consistent with the renormalization group fixed point coupling. This $V_{eff}$, when used instead of the traditional $a φ^2 + b φ^4$, turns the Ginzburg--Landau description of the long-wave properties of the 3d theory near criticality into quantitatively accurate. It is also relevant to the theory of cosmological phase transitions.
