Anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic spin correlations in the superconducting state of YBa_2Cu_3O_7 and YBa_2Cu_4O_8

We present evidence that the antiferromagnetic spin correlations in optimally doped YBa_2Cu_3O_7 and underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 develop a surprisingly strong anisotropy in the superconducting state. Comparing the ratio of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates of the planar copper and oxygen, measured at the lowest and highest temperatures as well as at T_c, we conclude that the antiferromagnetic in-plane correlations vanish as the temperature goes to zero. This observation is corroborated by the measurement of the copper linewidth in YBa_2Cu_4O_8. In contrast, the out-of-plane correlations do not change appreciably between T=T_c and T=0. Within a model of fluctuating fields this extreme anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic correlations also explains the observed temperature dependence of the anisotropy of the copper relaxation measured in a low external magnetic field.

Direct observation of the oxygen isotope effect on the in-plane magnetic field penetration depth in optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$

We report the first direct observation of the oxygen-isotope ($^{16}$O/$^{18}$O) effect on the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ in a nearly optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ film using the novel low-energy muon-spin rotation technique. Spin polarized low energy muons are implanted in the film at a known depth $z$ beneath the surface and precess in the local magnetic field $B(z)$. This feature allows us to measure directly the profile $B(z)$ of the magnetic field inside the superconducting film in the Meissner state and to make a model independent determination of $λ_{ab}$. A substantial isotope shift $Δλ_{ab}/λ_{ab}=2.8(7)$% at 4 K is observed, implying that the in-plane effective supercarrier mass $m_{ab}^\ast$ is oxygen-isotope dependent with $Δm_{ab}^\ast/m_{ab}^\ast = 5.5(1.4)%$.

Oxygen Isotope Effect of the Plane-Copper NQR Frequency in YBa_2Cu_4O_8

We report on high-precision measurements of the temperature dependence of the plane-^63Cu NQR line frequency nu_Q(Cu2) and the linewidth in normal and superconducting ^16O and ^18O exchanged YBa_2Cu_4O_8. Whereas nu_Q(Cu2) passes T_c very smoothly without a discontinuity either in value nor in slope, the linewidth increases in the normal conducting phase down to T_c and starts to decrease sharply in the superconducting phase to finally resume its high-temperature value of the normal phase. There is a well discernible oxygen isotope effect on the nu_Q(Cu2) temperature dependencies. The temperature dependence of nu_Q(Cu2) is described by an empirical expression consisting of two parts: one related to the thermal expansion of the lattice and the other due to charge redistribution during the formation of new electronic structures in the CuO_2 planes. From the fit to the experimental data we determine for the conjectured formation of new electronic structures an energy scale Delta(^16O) = 188.0(1.6) K and Delta(^18O) = 180.0(1.6) K. This results in a partial oxygen isotope effect coefficient of 0.42(11) which is larger than both the spin-pseudogap coefficient [0.061(8)] and the T_c coefficient [0.056(12)].

^25Mg NMR study of the MgB_2 superconductor

^25Mg NMR spectra and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time, T_1, have been measured in polycrystalline ^25MgB_2 with a superconducting transition temperature T_c = 39.0 K in zero magnetic field. From the first order and second order quadrupole perturbed NMR spectrum a quadrupole coupling frequency nu_Q = 222(1.5) kHz is obtained. T_1T = 1090(50) sK and Knight shift K_c = 242(4) ppm are temperature independent in the normal conducting phase. The ^25Mg Korringa ratio equals to 0.95 which is very close to the ideal value of unity for s-electrons. The comparison of the experimental nu_Q, T_1T, and K_c with the corresponding values obtained by LDA calculations shows an excellent agreement for all three quantities.

Charge degree of freedom and single-spin fluid model in YBa_2Cu_4O_8

We present a 17O nuclear magnetic resonance study in the stoichiometric superconductor YBa_2Cu_4O_8. A double irradiation method enables us to show that, below around 180 K, the spin-lattice relaxation rate of plane oxygen is not only driven by magnetic, but also significantly by quadrupolar fluctuations, i.e. low-frequency charge fluctuations. In the superconducting state, on lowering the temperature, the quadrupolar relaxation diminishes faster than the magnetic one. These findings show that, with the opening of the pseudo spin gap, a charge degree of freedom of mainly oxygen character is present in the electronic low-energy excitation spectrum.

Separation of quadrupolar and magnetic contributions to spin-lattice relaxation in the case of a single isotope

We present a NMR pulse double-irradiation method which allows one to separate magnetic from quadrupolar contributions in the spin-lattice relaxation. The pulse sequence fully saturates one transition while another is observed. In the presence of a Delta m = 2 quadrupolar contribution, the intensity of the observed line is altered compared to a standard spin-echo experiment. We calculated analytically this intensity change for spins I=1, 3/2, 5/2, thus providing a quantitative analysis of the experimental results. Since the pulse sequence we used takes care of the absorbed radio-frequency power, no problems due to heating arise. The method is especially suited when only one NMR sensitive isotope is available. Different cross-checks were performed to prove the reliability of the obtained results. The applicability of this method is demonstrated by a study of the plane oxygen 17O (I = 5/2) in the high-temperature superconductor YBa_2Cu_4O_8: the 17O spin-lattice relaxation rate consists of magnetic as well as quadrupolar contributions.

Spin pseudo-gap and interplane coupling in Y_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15}: a ^{63}Cu nuclear spin-spin relaxation study

We report measurements of the Gaussian contribution, T_{2G}, to the plane ^{63}Cu nuclear spin--spin relaxation time in the YBa_2Cu_3O_7 and YBa_2Cu_4O_8 blocks of normal and superconducting Y_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15}. The data confirm our previous results that adjacent CuO_2 planes have different doping levels and that these planes are strongly coupled. -- The static spin susceptibility at the anti-ferromagnetic wave vector exhibits a Curie--Weiss like temperature dependence in the normal state. -- The Y_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15} data are incompatible with a phase diagram based on a single CuO_2 plane theory and suggest that the appearance of a spin gap implies interplane coupling. Additional data for YBa_2Cu_4O_8 and YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.982} are in accord with the single plane theory. -- The temperature dependence of T_{2G,ind} below T_c excludes isotropic s-wave superconductivity in all three compounds.
