Exchange Splitting of a Hybrid Surface State and Ferromagnetic Order in a 2D Surface Alloy

Surface alloys are highly flexible materials for tailoring the spin-dependent properties of surfaces. Here, we study the spin-dependent band structure of a DyAg$_2$ surface alloy formed on an Ag(111) crystal. We find a significant exchange spin-splitting of the localized Dy 4f states pointing to a ferromagnetic coupling between the localized Dy moments at $40\,$K. The magnetic coupling between these moments is mediated by an indirect, RKKY-like exchange coupling via the spin-polarized electrons of the hole-like Dy-Ag hybrid surface state.

Quasiperiodic ordering in thick Sn layer on $i$-Al-Pd-Mn: A possible quasicrystalline clathrate

Realization of an elemental solid-state quasicrystal has remained a distant dream so far in spite of extensive work in this direction for almost two decades. Here, we report the discovery of quasiperiodic ordering in a thick layer of elemental Sn grown on icosahedral ($i$)-Al-Pd-Mn. The STM images and the LEED patterns of the Sn layer show specific structural signatures that portray quasiperiodicity but are distinct from the substrate. Photoemission spectroscopy reveals the existence of the pseudogap around the Fermi energy up to the maximal Sn thickness. The structure of the Sn layer is modeled as a novel form of quasicrystalline clathrate on the basis of the following: Firstly, from ab-initio theory, the energy of bulk Sn clathrate quasicrystal is lower than the high temperature metallic $β$-Sn phase, but higher than the low temperature $α$-Sn phase. A comparative study of the free slab energetics shows that surface energy favors clathrate over $α$-Sn up to about 4 nm layer thickness, and matches $β$-Sn for narrow window of slab thickness of 2-3 nm. Secondly, the bulk clathrate exhibits gap opening near Fermi energy, while the free slab form exhibits a pronouced pseudogap, which explains the pseudogap observed in photoemission. Thirdly, the STM images exhibit good agreement with clathrate model. We establish the adlayer-substrate compatibility based on very similar (within 1%) the cage-cage separation in the Sn clathrate and the pseudo-Mackay cluster-cluster separation on the $i$-Al-Pd-Mn surface. Furthermore, the nucleation centers of the Sn adlayer on the substrate are identified and these are shown to be a valid part of the Sn clathrate structure. Thus, based on both experiment and theory, we propose that 4 nm thick Sn adlayer deposited on 5-fold surface of $i$-Al-Pd-Mn substrate is in fact a metastable realization of elemental, clathrate family quasicrystal.

Structure and electronic properties of the ($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)$R30^{\circ}$ SnAu$_2$/Au(111) surface alloy

We have investigated the atomic and electronic structure of the ($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)$R30^{\circ}$ SnAu$_2$/Au(111) surface alloy. Low energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements show that the native herringbone reconstruction of bare Au(111) surface remains intact after formation of a long range ordered ($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)$R30^{\circ}$ SnAu$_2$2/Au(111) surface alloy. Angle-resolved photoemission and two-photon photoemission spectroscopy techniques reveal Rashba-type spin-split bands in the occupied valence band with comparable momentum space splitting as observed for the Au(111) surface state, but with a hole-like parabolic dispersion. Our experimental findings are compared with density functional theory (DFT) calculation that fully support our experimental findings. Taking advantage of the good agreement between our DFT calculations and the experimental results, we are able to extract that the occupied Sn-Au hybrid band is of (s, d)-orbital character while the unoccupied Sn-Au hybrid bands are of (p, d)-orbital character. Hence, we can conclude that the Rashba-type spin splitting of the hole-like Sn-Au hybrid surface state is caused by the significant mixing of Au d- to Sn s-states in conjunction with the strong atomic spin-orbit coupling of Au, i.e., of the substrate.

Inverse photoemission spectroscopic studies on phase separated La$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$MnO$_{3}$

We have studied the temperature evolution of the inverse photoemission spectra of phase separated La$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$MnO$_{3}$. To identify the features in the room temperature experimental spectra, band structure calculations using Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's function method were carried out. We find that the features generated by local moment disorder calculations give a better match with the experimental spectrum. In the insulating phase, we observed unusually an increased intensity at around the Fermi level. This puzzling behaviour is attributed to the shift in the chemical potential towards the conduction band. The present results clearly show the importance of unoccupied electronic states in better understanding of the phase separated systems.

Estimate of the Coulomb Correlation Energy in CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$ from Inverse Photoemission and High Resolution Photoemission Spectroscopy

The occupied and the unoccupied electronic structure of CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystal has been studied using high resolution photoemission and inverse photoemission spectroscopy respectively. High resolution photoemission reveals the clear signature of Ce $4f$ states in the occupied electronic structure which was not observed earlier due to the poor resolution. The coulomb correlation energy in this system has been determined experimentally from the position of the $4f$ states above and below the Fermi level. Theoretically the correlation energy has been determined by using the first principles density functional calculations within the generalized gradient approximations taking into account the strong intra-atomic (on-site) interaction Hubbard $U_{eff}$ term. Although the valence band calculated with different $U_{eff}$ does not show significant difference, but the substantial changes are observed in the conduction band. The estimated value of correlation energy from both the theory and the experiment is $\approx$4.2~eV for CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$.
