On-sky dark hole diggin' with implicit Electric Field Conjugation on MagAO-X

Direct spectroscopy is very promising approach to characterizing the atmospheres of nearby rocky exoplanets. Non-common path aberrations (NCPA) are differential aberrations between the science optical path and the adaptive optics optical path. The NCPA leak through the coronagraph and create speckles that mimic exoplanet signals. This limits the sensitivity of high-contrast imaging instruments at close angular separations - exactly the separations where we want to search for rocky exoplanets with current and future telescopes and instruments. We aim to actively remove the NCPA on-sky during observations by using focal plane wavefront sensing and control with the newly upgraded MagAO-X instrument. MagAO-X is equipped with a unique second-stage Adaptive Optics (AO) system. The second-stage AO system contains a dedicated deformable mirror (DM) for coronagraphic focal plane wavefront control. This DM is placed after the science and AO beam-splitter and is therefore not seen by the main AO loop. The DM has been recently upgraded from an ALPAO-97 to a Boston Micromachine Kilo-DM. The new Kilo-DM enables focal plane wavefront control with the implicit Electric Field Conjugation (iEFC) algorithm. We developed the necessary procedures to run iEFC with MagAO-X on-sky. We demonstrated the successful removal of NCPA on-sky with an iEFC interaction matrix that was calibrated on the MagAO-X internal source. This demonstrates the repeatability between our off-sky and on-sky alignment. The iEFC algorithm was tested on HR4796A and Alpha Centauri in 0.5" seeing conditions. We saw a reduction of the NCPA by a factor of 2 to 20. This on-sky validation confirms the robustness and efficiency of iEFC under realistic observing conditions, paving the way for its integration into next-generation AO systems for the Extremely Large Telescope and Giant Magellan Telescope.

Null shells: general matching across null boundaries and connection with cut-and-paste formalism

Null shells are a useful geometric construction to study the propagation of infinitesimally thin concentrations of massless particles or impulsive waves. In this paper, we determine and study the necessary and sufficient conditions for the matching of two spacetimes with respective null embedded hypersurfaces as boundaries. Whenever the matching is possible, it is shown to depend on a diffeomorphism between the set of null generators in each boundary and a scalar function, called step function, that determines a shift of points along the null generators. Generically there exists at most one possible matching but in some circumstances this is not so. When the null boundaries are totally geodesic, the point-to-point identification between them introduces a freedom whose nature and consequences are analyzed in detail. The expression for the energy-momentum tensor of a general null shell is also derived. Finally, we find the most general shell (with non-zero energy, energy flux and pressure) that can be generated by matching two Minkowski regions across a null hyperplane. This allows us to show how the original Penrose's cut-and-paste construction fits and connects with the standard matching formalism.

On the construction of global models describing rotating bodies; uniqueness of the exterior gravitational field

The problem of constructing global models describing isolated axially symmetric rotating bodies in equilibrium is analyzed. It is claimed that, whenever the global spacetime is constructed by giving boundary data on the limiting surface of the body and integrating Einstein's equations both inside and ouside the body, the problem becomes overdetermined. Similarly, when the spacetime describing the interior of the body is explicitly given, the problem of finding the exterior vacuum solution becomes overdetermined. We discuss in detail the procedure to be followed in order to construct the exterior vacuum field created by a given but arbitrary distribution of matter. Finally, the uniqueness of the exterior vacuum gravitational field is proven by exploiting the harmonic map formulation of the vacuum equations and the boundary conditions prescribed from the matching.
