High-resolution imaging at the SOAR telescope

Bright single and binary stars were observed at the 4.1-m telescope with a fast electron-multiplication camera in the regime of partial turbulence correction by the visible-light adaptive optics system. We compare the angular resolution achieved by simple averaging of AO-corrected images (long-exposure), selection and re-centering (shift-and-add or "lucky" imaging) and speckle interferometry. The effect of partial AO correction, vibrations, and image post-processing on the attained resolution is shown. Potential usefulness of these techniques is evaluated for reaching the diffraction limit in ground-based optical imaging. Measurements of 75 binary stars obtained during these tests are given and objects of special interest are discussed. We report tentative resolution of the astrometric companion to Zeta Aqr B. A concept of advanced high-resolution camera is outlined.

Study of the gp-->etap reaction with the Crystal Ball detector at the Mainz Microtron(MAMI-C)

The gp-->etap reaction has been measured with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers in the energy range from the production threshold of 707 MeV to 1.4 GeV (1.49 =< W >= 1.87 GeV). Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI-C and momentum analyzed by the Glasgow Tagging Spectrometer were used for the eta-meson production. Our accumulation of 3.8 x 10^6 gp-->etap-->3pi0p-->6gp events allows a detailed study of the reaction dynamics. The gp-->etap differential cross sections were determined for 120 energy bins and the full range of the production angles. Our data show a dip near W = 1680 MeV in the total cross section caused by a substantial dip in eta production at forward angles. The data are compared to predictions of previous SAID and MAID partial-wave analyses and to thelatest SAID and MAID fits that have included our data.

Muon-induced backgrounds in the CUORICINO experiment

To better understand the contribution of cosmic ray muons to the CUORICINO background, 10 plastic scintillator detectors were installed at the CUORICINO site and operated during the final 3 months of the experiment. From these measurements, an upper limit of 0.0021 counts/(keV kg yr) (95% CL) was obtained on the cosmic ray-induced background in the neutrinoless double beta decay region of interest. The measurements were also compared to Geant4 simulations.

Production of high purity TeO2 single crystals for the study of neutrinoless double beta decay

High purity TeO2 crystals are produced to be used for the search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Dedicated production lines for raw material synthesis, crystal growth and surface processing were built compliant with radio-purity constraints specific to rare event physics experiments. High sensitivity measurements of radio-isotope concentrations in raw materials, reactants, consumables, ancillaries and intermediary products used for TeO2 crystals production are reported. Production and certification protocols are presented and resulting ready-to-use TeO2 crystals are described.

Search for neutral Higgs bosons decaying into four taus at LEP2

A search for the production and non-standard decay of a Higgs boson, h, into four taus through intermediate pseudoscalars, a, is conducted on 683 pb-1 of data collected by the ALEPH experiment at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. No excess of events above background is observed, and exclusion limits are placed on the combined production cross section times branching ratio, ξ^2 = σ(e+e- --> Zh)/σ_{SM}(e+e- --> Zh) x B(h --> aa)x B(a --> τ^+τ^-)^2. For mh < 107 GeV/c2 and 4 < ma < 10 GeV/c2, ξ^2 > 1 is excluded at the 95% confidence level.

Monte Carlo evaluation of the external gamma, neutron and muon induced background sources in the CUORE experiment

CUORE is a 1 ton scale cryogenic experiment aiming at the measurement of the Majorana mass of the electron neutrino. The detector is an array of 988 TeO2 bolometers used for a calorimetric detection of the two electrons emitted in the BB0n of 130Te. The sensitivity of the experiment to the lowest Majorana mass is determined by the rate of background events that can mimic a BB0n. In this paper we investigate the contribution of external sources i.e. environmental gammas, neutrons and cosmic ray muons to the CUORE background and show that the shielding setup designed for CUORE guarantees a reduction of this external background down to a level <1.0E-02 c/keV/kg/y at the Q-value, as required by the physical goal of the experiment.

Search for Dark Matter signatures with MAGIC-I and prospects for MAGIC Phase-II

In many Dark Matter (DM) scenarios, the annihilation of DM particles can produce gamma rays with a continuum spectrum that extends up to very high energies of the order of the electroweak symmetry breaking scale (hundreds of GeV). Astrophysical structures supposed to be dynamically dominated by DM, such as dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies, Galaxy Clusters (the largest ones in the local Universe being mostly observable from the northern hemisphere) and Intermediate Mass Black Holes, can be considered as interesting targets to look for DM annihilation with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). Instead, the center of our Galaxy seems to be strongly contaminated with astrophysical sources. The 17m Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC-I) Telescope, situated in the Canary island of La Palma (2200 m a.s.l.), is best suited for DM searches, due to its unique combination of high sensitivity and low energy threshold among current IACTs which can potentially allow to provide clues on the high energy end, and possibly peak, of the gamma-ray DM-induced spectrum constrained at lower energies with the Fermi Space Telescope. The recent results achieved by MAGIC-I for some of the best candidates, as well as the DM detection prospects for the MAGIC Phase II, are reported.

The readout system of the MAGIC-II Cherenkov Telescope

In this contribution we describe the hardware, firmware and software components of the readout system of the MAGIC-II Cherenkov telescope on the Canary island La Palma. The PMT analog signals are transmitted by means of optical fibers from the MAGIC-II camera to the 80 m away counting house where they are routed to the new high bandwidth and fully programmable receiver boards (MONSTER), which convert back the signals from optical to electrical ones. Then the signals are split, one half provide the input signals for the level ONE trigger system while the other half is sent to the digitizing units. The fast Cherenkov pulses are sampled by low-power Domino Ring Sampler chips (DRS2) and temporarily stored in an array of 1024 capacitors. Signals are sampled at the ultra-fast speed of 2 GSample/s, which allows a very precise measurement of the signal arrival times in all pixels. They are then digitized with 12-bit resolution by an external ADC readout at 40 MHz speed. The Domino samplers are integrated in the newly designed mezzanines which equip a set of fourteen multi-purpose PULSAR boards. Finally, the data are sent through an S-LINK optical interface to a single computer. The entire DAQ hardware is controlled through a VME interface and steered by the slow control software program (MIR). The Data AcQuisition software program (DAQ) proceeds finally to the event building and data storage.

Beam-Helicity Asymmetries in Double Pion Photoproduction off the Proton

Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz in the three isospin channels $\vecγp\to π^{+}π^0n$, $\vecγp\to π^{0}π^0p$ and $\vecγp\to π^{+}π^{-}p$ . The circularly polarized photons, produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons, were tagged with the Glasgow magnetic spectrometer. Charged pions and the decay photons of $π^0$ mesons were detected in a $~4π$ electromagnetic calorimeter which combined the Crystal Ball detector with the TAPS detector. The precisely measured asymmetries are very sensitive to details of the production processes and are thus key observables in the modeling of the reaction dynamics.

Measurement of the Slope Parameter $α$ for the $η\to 3π^0$ decay with the Crystal Ball detector at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI-C)

The dynamics of the $η\to 3π^0$ decay have been studied with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer and the TAPS calorimeter. Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz microtron MAMI-C and tagged by the Glasgow photon spectrometer were used for $η$-meson production. The analysis of $3 \times 10^6$ $γp \to ηp \to 3π^0 p \to 6γp$ events yields the value $α=-0.032\pm0.003$ for the $η\to 3π^0$ slope parameter, which agrees with the majority of recent experimental results and has the smallest uncertainty. The $π^0π^0$ invariant-mass spectrum was investigated for the occurrence of a cusplike structure in the vicinity of the $π^+π^-$ threshold. The observed effect is small and does not affect our measured value for the slope parameter.

Recent Results on Jet Physics at the Tevatron

In this contribution, a comprehensive review of the main aspects of high pt jet physics in Run II at the Tevatron is presented. Recent measurements on inclusive jet and dijet production are discussed using different jet algorithms and covering a wide region of jet transverse momentum and jet rapidity. Several measurements, sensitive to a proper description of soft gluon radiation and the underlying event in hadron collisions, are also shown.

Measurement of Inclusive Jet Cross Sections in Z(->ee)+jets Production in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV

Inclusive jet cross sections in Z/γ^* events, with Z/γ^* decaying into an electron-positron pair, are measured as a function of jet transverse momentum and jet multiplicity in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab in Run II, based on an integrated luminosity of 2.5 fb-1. The measurements cover the rapidity region |yjet | < 2.1 and the transverse momentum range ptjet > 30 GeV/c. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions are in good agreement with the measured cross sections.

Measurement of the Inclusive Isolated Photon Cross Section at CDF

We present preliminary results on inclusive direct photon production in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV, using data collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab in Run II, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 451 pb$^{-1}$. Measurements are performed as a function of the photon transverse momentum for photons with $p_{T}>$30 GeV and $|η|<$1.0. Photons are required to be isolated in the calorimeter. The measurement is corrected to the hadron level and compared to NLO pQCD predictions.

Evaluation and exploitation of knowledge robustness in knowledge-based systems

Industrial knowledge is complex, difficult to formalize and very dynamic in reason of the continuous development of techniques and technologies. The verification of the validity of the knowledge base at the time of its elaboration is not sufficient. To be exploitable, this knowledge must then be able to be used under conditions (slightly) different from the conditions in which it was formalized. So, it becomes vital for the company to permanently evaluate the quality of the industrial knowledge implemented in the system. This evaluation is founded on the concept of robustness of the knowledge formalized by conceptual graphs. The evaluation method is supported by a computerized tool.

Incoherent pion photoproduction on $^{12}$C

We present the first detailed measurement of incoherent photoproduction of neutral pions to a discrete state of a residual nucleus. The $^{12}$C$(γ,π^{0})^{12}$C$^{*}_{4.4MeV}$ reaction has been studied with the Glasgow photon tagger at MAMI employing a new technique which uses the large solid angle Crystal Ball detector both as a $π^{0}$ spectrometer and to detect decay photons from the excited residual nucleus. The technique has potential applications to a broad range of future nuclear measurements with the Crystal Ball and similar detector systems elsewhere. The data are sensitive to the propagation of the $Δ$ in the nuclear medium and will give the first information on matter transition form factors from measurements with an electromagnetic probe. The incoherent cross sections are compared to two theoretical predictions including a $Δ$-hole model.

The Nature of Interstellar Gas toward the Pleiades Revealed in Absorption Lines

We present high-resolution, high signal to noise absorption-line observations of CN, Ca II, Ca I, CH^+, and CH along twenty lines of sight toward members of the Pleiades. The acquired data enable the most detailed study to date of the interaction between cluster stars and the surrounding interstellar gas. Total equivalent widths are consistent with previous investigations except where weaker features are detected owing to our greater sensitivity. Mean b-values for the molecular species indicate that toward most of the Pleiades CH is associated with the production of CH^+ rather than CN. An analysis of radial velocities reveals a kinematic distinction between ionized atomic gas and molecular and neutral gas. Molecular components are found with velocities in the local standard of rest of either ~ +7 km s^-1 or ~ +9.5 km s^-1, with the higher-velocity components associated with the strongest absorption. Atomic gas traced by Ca II shows a strong central component at v_LSR ~ +7 km s^-1 exhibiting velocity gradients indicative of cloud-cluster interactions. Gas density estimates derived from measured CH/CH^+ column density ratios show good agreement with those inferred from H_2 rotational populations, yielding typical values of n ~ 50 cm^-3. Our models do not include the important time-dependent effects on CH^+ formation which may ultimately be needed to extract physical conditions in these clouds.

Investigating halo substructures with annual modulation signature

Galaxy hierarchical formation theories, numerical simulations, the discovery of the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy (SagDEG) in 1994 and more recent investigations suggest that the dark halo of the Milky Way can have a rich phenomenology containing non thermalized substructures. In the present preliminary study, we investigate the case of the SagDEG (the best known satellite galaxy in the Milky Way crossing the solar neighbourhood) analyzing the consequences of its dark matter stream contribution to the galactic halo on the basis of the DAMA/NaI annual modulation data. The present analysis is restricted to some WIMP candidates and to some of the astrophysical, nuclear and particle Physics scenarios. Other candidates such as e.g. the light bosonic ones, we discussed elsewhere, and other non thermalized substructures are not yet addressed here.
