Zee-type Neutrino Mass Matrix and Bi-Maximal Mixing

It is shown that the bi-maximal solution is the only possibility to reconcile Zee-type neutrino mass matrix with three flavors to the current atmospheric and solar neutrino experimental data. The mass of the lightest neutrino, which consist mostly of $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$, is $\simeq Δm_{\odot}^2/(2\sqrt{Δm_{atm}^2})$. The related topics on Zee-type neutrino mass matrix are also discussed.

Zee Neutrino Mass Matrix in the Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking Scenario

It is well known that Zee type neutrino mass matrix can provide bi-maximal neutrino mixing for three neutrinos. We study the reconciliation of this model with the gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario, which naturally suppresses the large flavor changing neutral current and CP violation in the supersymmetric standard model. When the messenger fields have suitable B-L charges, the radiative correction naturally induces the Zee neutrino mass matrix, which provides tiny neutrino masses and large lepton flavor mixings. Our numerical results are consistent with the neutrino oscillation experiments in both three and four neutrino models.

Freezing of anisotropic spin clusters in La1.98Sr0.02CuO4

A spin-glass compound, La$_{1.98}$Sr$_{0.02}$CuO$_4$, shows quasi-three-dimensional magnetic ordering below $\sim$40 K. A remarkable feature is that the magnetic correlation length along the orthorhombic $a\rm_{ortho}$ axis is much longer than that along the $b\rm_{ortho}$ axis, suggesting that the spin structure is closely related to the diagonal stripe structure. The spin-glass state can be expressed as a random freezing of quasi-three-dimensional spin clusters with anisotropic spin correlations ($ξ'_a\sim160$ Å, $ξ'_b\sim25$ Å, and $ξ'_c\sim4.7$ Åat 1.6 K). The new magnetic state is important as an intermediate phase between the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordered phase in La$_2$CuO$_4$ and the incommensurate phase in La$_{1.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$CuO$_4$ in which the positions of the incommensurate peaks are rotated by 45$^\circ$ in reciprocal space about ($π$,$π$) from those observed in the superconducting La$_2$CuO$_4$ compounds.

Zee Mass Matrix and Bi-Maximal Neutrino Mixing

We investigate neutrino masses and mixings within the framework of the Zee mass matrix, with three lepton flavors. It is shown that the bi-maximal solution is the only possibility to reconcile atmospheric and solar neutrino data, within this ansatz. We obtain two almost degenerate neutrinos, which are mixtures of all three neutrino flavors, with heavy masses $\simeq \sqrt{Δm_{atm}^2}$. The predicted mass of the lightest neutrino, which should consist mostly of $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$, is $\simeq Δm_{\odot}^2/(2\sqrt{Δm_{atm}^2})$.

Quasi-two-dimensional hole ordering and dimerized state in the CuO2-chain layers in Sr14Cu24O41

Neutron scattering experiments have been performed on Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ which consists of both chains and ladders of copper ions. We observed that the magnetic excitations from the CuO$_2$ chain have two branches and that both branches are weakly dispersive along the $a$ and $c$ axes. The $ω$-$Q$ dispersion relation as well as the intensities can be reasonably described by a random phase approximation with intradimer coupling between next-nearest-neighbor copper spins $J$=11 meV, interdimer coupling along the c axis $J_c$=0.75 meV, and interdimer coupling along the a axis $J_a$=0.75 meV. The dimer configuration indicates a quasi-two-dimensional hole ordering, resulting in an ordering of magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ with spin-1/2 and nonmagnetic Cu, which forms the Zhang-Rice singlet. We have also studied the effect of Ca substitution for Sr on the dimer and the hole ordering.

Magnetic excitations and structural change in the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional magnet Sr_{14-x}Y_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41} (0<x<1)

Neutron scattering measurements have been performed on the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional system Sr_{14-x}Y_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}, which has both simple chains and two-leg ladders of copper ions. We observed that when a small amount of yttrium is substituted for strontium, which is expected to reduce the number of holes, the dimerized state and the structure in the chain are changed drastically. The inelastic peaks originating from the dimerized state of the chain becomes broader in energy but not in momentum space. This implies that the dimerized state becomes unstable but the spin correlations are unchanged with yttrium substitution. Furthermore, it was observed that nuclear Bragg peak intensities originating from the chain show strong temperature and x dependence, which suggests that the chains slide along the c axis as temperature and x are varied.

Fermion Masses and Mixings in a String Inspired Model

In the context of Calabi-Yau string models we explore the origin of characteristic pattern of quark-lepton masses and the CKM matrix. The discrete $R$-symmetry $Z_K \times Z_2$ is introduced and the $Z_2$ is assigned to the $R$-parity. The gauge symmetry at the string scale, $SU(6) \times SU(2)_R$, is broken into the standard model gauge group at a very large intermediate energy scale. At energies below the intermediate scale down-type quarks and also leptons are mixed with unobserved heavy states, respectively. On the other hand, there are no such mixings for up-type quarks. Due to the large mixings between light states and heavy ones we can derive phenomenologically viable fermion mass hierarchies and the CKM matrix. Mass spectra for intermediate-scale matter beyond the MSSM are also determined. Within this framework proton lifetime is long enough to be consistent with experimental data. As for the string scale unification of gauge couplings, however, consistent solutions are not yet found.

Neutron Electric Dipole Momento in Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

The effect of the "chromo-electric" dipole moment on the electric dipole moment(EDM) of the neutron is studied in the two-Higgs-doublet model. The Weinberg's operator $O_{3g}=GG\t G$ and the operator $O_{qg}=\bar qσ\t Gq$ are both investigated in the cases of $\tan\b\gg 1$, $\tan\b\ll 1$ and $\tan\b\simeq 1$. The neutron EDM is considerably reduced due to the destructive contribution with two light Higgs scalars exchanges.

Penguin-Diagram Induced $B \rightarrow K_Xϕ$ Decays in the Standard Model and in the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We systematically analyse the gluonic penguin-induced charmless decays $B \ra K_Xϕ$($K_X$ denotes the meson state $s\bar q \;(q=u\ {\rm or}\ d)$ ), in the standard model and the two-Higgs-doublet model. These processes, being induced at one-loop level, are of great importance in measuring the virtual top quark effect in the standard model, and also in searching for the non-standard signals in the low energy region. It is shown that the QCD effect is also significant in these processes, as in the weak radiative processes $B \ra X_s γ$. We also show that the charged Higgs contribution can not provide sizable enhancements for the decays $B \ra K_Xϕ$, in contrast to the decays $B \ra K_Xγ$. It is also found that processes such as $B \ra K_1(1400)ϕ$ and $B \ra K(1460)ϕ$ have large branching fractions among $B \ra K_Xϕ$ decays.

How Can We Obtain a Large Majorana-Mass in Calabi-Yau Models ?

In a certain type of Calabi-Yau superstring models it is clarified that the symmetry breaking occurs by stages at two large intermediate energy scales and that two large intermediate scales induce large Majorana-masses of right-handed neutrinos. Peculiar structure of the effective nonrenormalizable interactions is crucial in the models. In this scheme Majorana-masses possibly amount to $O(10^{9 \sim 10}\gev)$ and see-saw mechanism is at work for neutrinos. Based on this scheme we propose a viable model which explains the smallness of masses for three kind of neutrinos $ν_e, ν_μ \ {\rm and}\ ν_τ$. Special forms of the nonrenormalizable interactions can be understood as a consequence of an appropriate discrete symmetry of the compactified manifold.
