Odd-even staggering of neutron radii for neutron-rich Mg isotopes in continuum Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory

The self-consistent continuum Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory formulated with Green's function technique in the coordinate space is developed to investigate odd-$A$ nuclei by incorporating the blocking effect. In a calculation performed with the SLy4 parameter for the neutron-rich Mg isotopes with $A=36-42$ around the neutron shell closure N=28, the odd-even staggering in the neutron rms radius, i.e., a larger value in $^{39}$Mg than those in $^{38}$Mg and $^{40}$Mg, is found. The large neutron radius in $^{39}$Mg is due to the blocking effect on the pair correlation energy, for which the configuration occupying the weakly-bound quasiparticle state $2p_{3/2}$ becomes the ground state instead of the $1f_{7/2}$ configuration. Performing systematic calculations with different Skyrme parameters we find that the ground state configuration for the odd-$A$ Mg isotopes, and hence the odd-even staggering of neutron radii, are sensitive to the details in the single-particle spectra, especially the gap between orbits $1f_{7/2}$ and $2p_{3/2}$.

Absence of Superconductivity in the "hole-doped" Fe pnictide Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$: Photoemission and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Studies

We have studied the electronic structure of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x$=0.08), which fails to become a superconductor in spite of the formal hole doping like Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, by photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). With decreasing temperature, a transition from the paramagnetic phase to the antiferromagnetic phase was clearly observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. XAS results indicated that the substituted Mn atoms form a strongly hybridized ground state. Resonance-photoemission spectra at the Mn $L_{3}$ edge revealed that the Mn 3d partial density of states is distributed over a wide energy range of 2-13 eV below the Fermi level ($E_F$), with little contribution around $E_F$. This indicates that the dopant Mn 3$d$ states are localized in spite of the strong Mn 3d-As $4p$ hybridization and split into the occupied and unoccupied parts due to the on-site Coulomb and exchange interaction. The absence of superconductivity in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ can thus be ascribed both to the absence of carrier doping in the FeAs plane, and to the strong stabilizaiton of the antiferromagnetic order by the Mn impurities.

Pair correlation of giant halo nuclei in continuum Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory

The giant halos predicted in neutron-rich Zr isotopes with $A=124-138$ are investigated by using the self-consistent continuum Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach, in which the asymptotic behavior of continuum quasiparticle states is properly treated by the Green's function method. We study in detail the neutron pair correlation involved in the giant halo by analyzing the asymptotic exponential tail of the neutron pair condensate (pair density) in addition to that of the neutron particle density. The neutron quasiparticle spectra associated with these giant halo nuclei are examined. It is found that the asymptotic exponential tail of the neutron pair condensate is dominated by non-resonant continuum quasiparticle states corresponding to the scattering states with low asymptotic kinetic energy. This is in contrast to the asymptotic tail of the neutron density, whose main contributions arise from the resonant quasiparticle states corresponding to the weakly-bound single-particle orbits and resonance orbits in the Hartree-Fock potential.

Non-monotonic temperature dependence of thermopower in strongly correlated electron systems

We examine the temperature dependence of thermopower in the single band Hubbard model using dynamical mean-field theory. The strong Coulomb interaction brings about the coherent-to-incoherent crossover as temperature increases. As a result, the thermopower exhibits non-monotonic temperature dependence and asymptotically approaches values given by the Mott-Heikes formula. In the light of our theoretical result, we discuss the thermopower in some transition metal oxides. The magnetic field dependence of the thermopower is also discussed.

Thermoelectric response in the incoherent transport region near Mott transition: the case study of La1-xSrxVO3

We report a systematic investigation on the high-temperature thermoelectric response in a typical filling-control Mott transition system La1-xSrxVO3. In the vicinity of the Mott transition, incoherent charge transport appears with increasing temperature and the thermopower undergoes two essential crossovers, asymptotically approaching the limit values expected from the entropy consideration, as known as Heikes formula. By comparison with the results of the dynamical mean field theory, we show that the thermopower in the Mott critical state mainly measures the entropy per charge carrier that depends on electronic degrees of freedom available at the measurement temperature. Our findings verify that the Heikes formula is indeed applicable to the real correlated electron systems at practical temperatures (T>200K).

Open problems in microscopic theory of large-amplitude collective motion

Construction of the microscopic theory of large-amplitude collective motion, capable of describing a wide variety of quantum collective phenomena in nuclei, is a long-standing and fundamental subject in the study of nuclear many-body systems. Present status of the challenge toward this goal is discussed taking the shape coexistence/mixing phenomena as typical manifestations of the large-amplitude collective motion at zero temperature. Some open problems in rapidly rotating cold nuclei are also briefly discussed in this connection.

RPA calculations with Gaussian expansion method

The Gaussian expansion method (GEM) is extensively applied to the calculations in the random-phase approximation (RPA). We adopt the mass-independent basis-set that has been tested in the mean-field calculations. By comparing the RPA results with those obtained by several other available methods for Ca isotopes, using a density-dependent contact interaction and the Woods-Saxon single-particle states, we confirm that energies, transition strengths and widths of their distribution are described by the GEM bases to good precision, for the $1^-$, $2^+$ and $3^-$ collective states. The GEM is then applied to the self-consistent RPA calculations with the finite-range Gogny D1S interaction. The spurious center-of-mass motion is well separated from the physical states in the $E1$ response, and the energy-weighted sum rules for the isoscalar transitions are fulfilled reasonably well. Properties of low-energy transitions in $^{60}$Ca are argued in some detail.

Quantized meson fields in and out of equilibrium. II: Chiral condensate and collective meson excitations

We develop a quantum kinetic theory of the chiral condensate and meson quasi-particle excitations using the O(N) linear sigma model which describe the chiral phase transition both in and out of equilibrium in a unified way. A mean field approximation is formulated in the presence of mesonic quasi-particle excitations which are described by generalized Wigner functions. It is shown that in equilibrium our kinetic equations reduce to the gap equations which determine the equilibrium condensate amplitude and the effective masses of the quasi-particle excitations, while linearization of transport equations, near such equilibrium, determine the dispersion relations of the collective mesonic excitations at finite temperatures. Although all mass parameters for the meson excitations become at finite temperature, apparently violating the Goldstone theorem, the missing Nambu-Goldstone modes are retrieved in the collective excitations of the system as three degenerate phonon-like modes in the symmetry-broken phase. We show that the temperature dependence of the pole masses of the collective pion excitations has non-analytic kink behavior at the threshold of the quasi-particle excitations in the presence of explicit symmetry breaking interaction.

Probing the order-to-chaos region in superdeformed 151Tb and 196Pb nuclei with continuum gamma-transitions

The gamma-decay associated with the warm rotation of the superdeformed (SD) nuclei 151Tb and 196Pb has been measured with the EUROBALL IV array. Several independent quantities provide a stringent test of the population and decay dynamics in the SD well. A Monte Carlo simulation of the gamma-decay based on microscopic calculations gives remarkable agreement with the data only assuming a large enhancement of the B(E1) strength at low excitation energy, which may be related to the evidence for octupole vibrations in both mass regions.

Quantized meson fields in and out of equilibrium. I : Kinetics of meson condensate and quasi-particle excitations

We formulate a kinetic theory of self-interacting meson fields with an aim to describe the freezeout stage of the space-time evolution of matter in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. Kinetic equations are obtained from the Heisenberg equation of motion for a single component real scalar quantum field taking the mean field approximation for the non-linear interaction. The mesonic mean field obeys the classical non-linear Klein-Gordon equation with a modification due to the coupling to mesonic quasi-particle excitations which are expressed in terms of the Wigner functions of the quantum fluctuations of the meson field, namely the statistical average of the bilinear forms of the meson creation and annihilation operators. In the long wavelength limit, the equations of motion of the diagonal components of the Wigner functions take a form of Vlasov equation with a particle source and sink which arises due to the non-vanishing off-diagonal components of the Wigner function expressing coherent pair-creation and pair-annihilation process in the presence of non-uniform condensate. We show that in the static homogeneous system, these kinetic equations reduce to the well-known gap equation in the Hartree approximation, and hence they may be considered as a generalization of the Hartree approximation method to non-equilibrium systems. As an application of these kinetic equations, we compute the dispersion relations of the collective mesonic excitations in the system near equilibrium.

Pairing collectivity in medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei near drip-line

We look for collective excitations originating from the strong surface pairing in unstable nuclei near the neutron drip-line. The soft dipole excitation is such a pairing mode as it exhibits a character of core-vs-dineutron motion. Possibility of the hydrodynamic phonon mode (the Anderson-Bogoliubov mode) is also discussed.

Collective Paths Connecting the Oblate and Prolate Shapes in 68Se and 72Kr Suggested by the Adiabatic Self-Consistent Collective Coordinate Method

By means of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method and the pairing-plus-quadrupole interaction, we have obtained the self-consistent collective path connecting the oblate and prolate local minima in 68Se and 72Kr for the first time. The self-consistent collective path is found to run approximately along the valley connecting the oblate and prolate local minima in the collective potential energy landscape. This result of calculation clearly indicates the importance of triaxial deformation dynamics in oblate-prolate shape coexistence phenomena.

Collective Path Connecting the Oblate and Prolate Local Minima in 68Se

By means of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method and the pairing plus quadrupole interaction, we have obtained the selfconsistent collective path connecting the oblate and prolate local minima in 68Se for the first time. Along the collective path, the triaxial deformation parameter (gamma) changes between 0 and 60 (degree) keeping the axially symmetric deformation parameter (beta) approximately constant, indicating the importance of triaxial deformation dynamics in the oblate-prolate shape coexistence phenomena.

Violation and persistence of the K-quantum number in warm rotating nuclei

The validity of the K-quantum number in rapidly rotating warm nuclei is investigated as a function of thermal excitation energy U and angular momentum I, for the rare-earth nucleus 163Er. The quantal eigenstates are described with a shell model which combines a cranked Nilsson mean-field and a residual two-body interaction, together with a term which takes into account the angular momentum carried by the K-quantum number in an approximate way. K-mixing is produced by the interplay of the Coriolis interaction and the residual interaction; it is weak in the region of the discrete rotational bands (U \lesim 1MeV), but it gradually increases until the limit of complete violation of the K-quantum number is approached around U \sim 2 - 2.5 MeV. The calculated matrix elements between bands having different K-quantum numbers decrease exponentially as a function of $ΔK$, in qualitative agreement with recent data.

Application of the Adiabatic Selfconsistent-Collective-Coordinate Method to a Solvable Model of Prolate-Oblate Shape Coexistence

The adiabatic selfconsistent collective coordinate method is applied to an exactly solvable multi-O(4) model which simulates nuclear shape coexistence phenomena. Collective mass and dynamics of large amplitude collective motions in this model system are analysed, and it is shown that the method can well describe the tunneling motions through the barrier between the prolate and oblate local minima in the collective potential. Emergence of the doublet pattern is well reproduced.

Rotational Damping and Compound Formation in Warm Rotating Nuclei

The rotational damping width Γ_{rot} and the compound damping width Γ_{comp} are two fundamental quantities that characterize rapidly rotating compound nuclei having finite thermal excitation energy. A two-component structure in the strength function of consecutive E2 transitions reflects the two widths, and it causes characteristic features in the double and triple gamma-ray spectra. We discuss a new method to extract experimentally values of Γ_{rot} and Γ_{comp}. The first preliminary result of this method is presented.

Continuum Linear Response in Coordinate Space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Formalism for Collective Excitations in Drip-line Nuclei

We formulate a continuum linear response theory on the basis of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism in the coordinate space representation in order to describe low-lying and high-lying collective excitations which couple to one-particle and two-particle continuum states. Numerical analysis is done for the neutron drip-line nucleus $^{24}$O. A low-lying collective mode that emerges above the continuum threshold with large neutron strength is analyzed. The collective state is sensitive to the density-dependence of the pairing. The present theory satisfies accurately the energy weighted sum rule. This is guaranteed by treating the pairing selfconsistently both in the static HFB and in the dynamical linear response equation.

Gamma-ray strength functions in thermally excited rotating nuclei

A general discussion and illustration is given of strength functions for rotational transitions in two-dimensional E(gamma_1) x E(gamma_2) spectra. Especially, a narrow component should be proportional to the compound damping width, related to the mixing of basis rotational bands into compound bands with fragmented transition strength. Three E(gamma_1) x E(gamma_2) spectra are made by setting gates on triple coincidences, selecting cascades which feed into specific low-lying bands in the nucleus 168Hf. In each of the gated spectra, we find a ridge, carrying about 100 decay paths. This ridge is ascribed to rotational transitions in the excitation energy range of 1.0 to 1.5 MeV above the yrast line. The FWHM of the ridges are around 40 keV, about a factor of two smaller than calculated on the basis of mixed cranked mean field bands.
