Candidate red supergiants from Gaia DR3 BPRP spectra: From the Perseus to the Scutum-Crux spiral arms

Context. Our position within the Galactic plane and the dust obscuration make it challenging to retrieve a true picture of the Milky Way's morphology. While the Milky Way has been recognized as a barred spiral galaxy since the 1960s, there is still uncertainty about the exact number of spiral arms it contains. Currently, our understanding of the Galaxy is evolving thanks to the unprecedented detail provided by Gaia's parallactic distances. Aims. To shed light on the spatial distribution of red supergiants (RSGs) on the Disk and their uniformity of parameters across it, a census of Galactic RSGs detected by Gaia is needed. Methods. Candidate RSGs were extracted from the combined Gaia DR3 and 2MASS catalogs using color criteria and parallactic distances. The sample includes 335 stars that were not included in catalogs of previously known RSGs detected by Gaia DR3. Interstellar and circumstellar extinction values were estimated from the infrared bands. Spectral types were collected from Simbad or VIZIER databases and, for 135 candidates, were inferred from the Gaia DR3 BPRP spectra. Stellar luminosities were inferred using photometric measurements and the Gaia DR3 distances. Results. The analysis yielded a genuine sample of O-rich late-type stars, and the calculated luminosities confirm that the sample is mostly made of stars brighter than Mbol=-5 mag. This new sample represents a 40% increase in the number of highly probable RSGs compared to previous studies. When looking at the X and Y distribution on the Galactic plane, beside the populous Perseus associations of RSGs and the Sagittarius group of RSGs, a novel population of highly probable RSGs populating the more distant Scutum-Centaurus arm appears.

86 GHz SiO masers in Galactic Centre OH/IR stars

We present results on a search for 86.243 GHz SiO (J = 2 -- 1, v = 1) maser emission toward 67 OH/IR stars located near the Galactic Centre. We detected 32 spectral peaks, of which 28 correspond to SiO maser lines arising from the envelopes of these OH/IR stars. In OH/IR stars, we obtained an SiO maser detection rate of about 40%. We serendipitously detected two other lines from OH/IR stars at 86.18 GHz, which could be due to a CCS-molecule transition at 86.181 GHz or probably to an highly excited OH molecular transition at 86.178 GHz. The detection rate of 86 GHz maser emission is found to be about 60% for sources with The Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) A - E < 2.5 mag; but it drops to 25% for the reddest OH/IR stars with MSX A - E > 2.5 mag. This supports the hypothesis by Messineo et al. (2002) that the SiO masers are primarily found in relatively thinner circumstellar material.

86 GHz SiO maser survey of late-type stars in the Inner Galaxy. IV. SiO emission and infrared data for sources in the Scutum and Sagittarius-Carina arms, 20 deg < l < 50 deg

We present an 86 GHz SiO (v = 1, J = 2 ---> 1) maser search toward late-type stars located within |b|<0.5 deg and 20 deg < l < 50 deg. This search is an extension at longer longitudes of a previously published work. We selected 135 stars from the MSX catalog using color and flux criteria and detected 92 (86 new detections). The detection rate is 68%, the same as in our previous study. The last few decades have seen the publication of several catalogs of point sources detected in infrared surveys (MSX, 2MASS, DENIS, ISOGAL, WISE, GLIMPSE, AKARI, and MIPSGAL). We searched each catalog for data on the 444 targets of our earlier survey and for the 135 in the survey reported here. We confirm that, as anticipated, most of our targets have colors typical of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Only one target star may have already left the AGB. Ten stars have colors typical of carbon-rich stars, meaning a contamination of our sample with carbon stars <=1.7%.

Young Massive Clusters/Associations in the GMC G23.3-0.3

An overview of a spectroscopic survey for massive stars in the direction of the Galactic giant molecular complex G23.3-0.3 is presented (Messineo et al. 2010, and 2014 A&A submitted). This region is interesting because it is rich in HII regions and supernova remnants (SNRs). A number of 38 early-type stars, a new luminous blue variable, and a dozen of red supergiants were detected. We identified the likely progenitors of the SNRs W41, G22.7-00.2, and G22.7583-0.4917.

SiO maser emission from red supergiants across the Galaxy: I. Targets in massive star clusters

Aims. Red supergiants (RSGs) are among the most luminous of all stars, easily detectable in external galaxies, and may ideally serve as kinematic tracers of Galactic structure. Some RSGs are surrounded by circumstellar envelopes detectable by their dust and molecular and, in particular, maser emission. This study consists of a search for maser emission from silicon monoxide (SiO) toward a significant number of RSGs that are members of massive stellar clusters, many of which have only recently been discovered. Further, we aim to relate the occurrence of maser action to properties of the host stars. Methods. Using the IRAM 30 meter telescope, we searched for maser emission in the J = 2 - 1 rotational transition within the first vibrationally excited state of SiO toward a sample of 88 RSGs. Results. With an average rms noise level of 0.25 Jy, we detected maser emission in 15% of the sample, toward most of the sources for the first time in this transition. The peak of the emission provides accurate radial velocities for the RSGs. The dependence of the detection rate on infrared colors supports a radiative pumping mechanism for the SiO masers.

VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV): The public ESO near-IR variability survey of the Milky Way

We describe the public ESO near-IR variability survey (VVV) scanning the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the mid-plane where star formation activity is high. The survey will take 1929 hours of observations with the 4-metre VISTA telescope during five years (2010-2014), covering ~10^9 point sources across an area of 520 deg^2, including 33 known globular clusters and ~350 open clusters. The final product will be a deep near-IR atlas in five passbands (0.9-2.5 microns) and a catalogue of more than 10^6 variable point sources. Unlike single-epoch surveys that, in most cases, only produce 2-D maps, the VVV variable star survey will enable the construction of a 3-D map of the surveyed region using well-understood distance indicators such as RR Lyrae stars, and Cepheids. It will yield important information on the ages of the populations. The observations will be combined with data from MACHO, OGLE, EROS, VST, Spitzer, HST, Chandra, INTEGRAL, WISE, Fermi LAT, XMM-Newton, GAIA and ALMA for a complete understanding of the variable sources in the inner Milky Way. This public survey will provide data available to the whole community and therefore will enable further studies of the history of the Milky Way, its globular cluster evolution, and the population census of the Galactic Bulge and center, as well as the investigations of the star forming regions in the disk. The combined variable star catalogues will have important implications for theoretical investigations of pulsation properties of stars.

The P Cygni supergiant [OMN2000] LS1 - implications for the star formation history of W51

We investigated the nature of the massive star [OMN2000] LS1 and used these results to constrain the history of star formation within the host complex W51. A combination of near-IR spectroscopy and non-LTE model atmosphere analysis was used to derive the physical properties of [OMN2000] LS1 and a combination of theoretical evolutionary calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to apply limits on the star formation history of W51. The spectrum of [OMN2000] LS1 is consistent with that of a P Cygni supergiant, but with a temperature of 13.2-13.7kK and log(L/L_sun)<5.75, it is significantly cooler, less luminous, and massive than proposed by previous authors. The presence of such a star within W51 shows that star formation has been underway for at least 3Myr, while the formation of massive O stars is still on going. We find no evidence of internally triggered, sequential star formation within W51, and favour the suggestion that star formation has proceeded at multiple indepedent sites within the GMC. [ABRIDGED]

A third red supergiant rich cluster in the Scutum-Crux Arm

We aim to characterise the properties of a third massive, red supergiant dominated galactic cluster. To accomplish this we utilised a combination of near/mid-IR photometry and spectroscopy to identify and classify the properties of cluster members, and statistical arguments to determine the mass of the cluster. We found a total of 16 strong candidates for cluster membership, for which formal classification of a subset yields spectral types from K3-M4 Ia and luminosities between log(L/L_sun)~4.5-4.8 for an adopted distance of 6+/-1 kpc. For an age in the range of 16-20 Myr, the implied mass is 2-4x10^4 M_sun, making it one of the most massive young clusters in the Galaxy. This discovery supports the hypothesis that a significant burst of star formation occurred at the base of Scutum-Crux arm between 10-20 Myr ago, yielding a stellar complex comprising at least ~10^5M_sun of stars (noting that since the cluster identification criteria rely on the presence of RSGs, we suspect that the true stellar yield will be significantly higher). We highlight the apparent absence of X-ray binaries within the star formation complex and finally, given the physical association of at least two pulsars with this region, discuss the implications of this finding for stellar evolution and the production and properties of neutron stars.

The distribution of maser stars in the inner Milky Way: the effect of a weak, rotating bar

We derive the distribution of maser stars in the inner Milky Way (MW) based on an analysis of lV-diagrams (lVd) for two samples of maser stars: 771 OH/IR stars and 363 SiO-maser stars. They are all close to the plane of the MW and have long. from -45 to +45deg. The two lVds are compared and found to be very similar. They also compare well with the lVd of interstellar CO, but there are significant differences in detail between the stellar lVds and that of the ISM. Based on the qualitative discussion we divide the lVds into seven areas. In each area we compare the number of stars observed with those predicted by an assumed set of orbits in a galactic potential. This potential is axially symmetric but a weak rotating bar has been added. We conclude that the maser stars move on almost circular orbits outside of about 3.5 kpc, but that the orbits become more and more elongated when one goes deep inside our MW. We find a strong effect of the Corotation (CR) resonance (res) at 3.3 kpc, we see a small but noticeable effect of the Outer Lindblad res at 5 kpc and no effect of the Inner Lindblad res at r=0.8 kpc. We find a set of 6 groups of orbits that together predict counts in agreement with the counts of stars observed. We then calculate the trajectory of each orbit and so find the distribution of the maser stars in the plane of the MWG. This distribution has two new (but not unexpected) features. The first is a bar-like distribution within 2 kpc from the GC outlined. These orbits explain the high-vel stars near l=0deg in the forbidden and the permitted quadrants. The second feature are two "croissant"-like voids in the distribution close to the CR radius (3.3 kpc), which are the consequence of the presence of the CR res. We find excellent agreement with an earlier reconstruction by Sevenster (1999).

86 GHz SiO maser survey of late-type stars in the Inner Galaxy III. Interstellar extinction and colours of the SiO targets

We have determined extinction corrections for a sample of 441 late-type stars in the inner Galaxy, which we previously searched for SiO maser emission, using the 2MASS near-infrared photometry of the surrounding stars. From this, the near-infrared extinction law is found to be approximated by a power law A$_λ\propto λ^{-1.9\pm0.1}$. Near- and mid-infrared colour-colour properties of known Mira stars are reviewed. From the distribution of the dereddened infrared colours of the SiO target stars we infer mass-loss rates between $10^{-7}$ and $10^{-5}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$.

86 GHz SiO maser survey of late-type stars in the Inner Galaxy II. Infrared photometry of the SiO Target Stars

We present a compilation and study of DENIS, 2MASS, ISOGAL, MSX and IRAS 1--25 micron photometry for a sample of 441 late-type stars in the inner Galaxy, which we previously searched for 86 GHz SiO maser emission (Messineo et al.2002). The comparison of the DENIS and 2MASS J and Ks magnitudes shows that most of the SiO targets are indeed variable stars. The MSX colours and the IRAS [12]-[25] colour of our SiO targets are consistent with those of Mira type stars with dust silicate feature at 9.7 micron feature in emission, indicating only a moderate mass-loss rate.

ISOGAL: A deep survey of the obscured inner Milky Way with ISO at 7 and 15 micron and with DENIS in the near-infrared

The ISOGAL project is an infrared survey of specific regions sampling the Galactic Plane selected to provide information on Galactic structure,stellar populations,stellar mass-loss and the recent star formation history of the inner disk and Bulge of the Galaxy. ISOGAL combines 7 and 15 micron ISOCAM observations - with a resolution of 6'' at worst - with DENIS IJKs data to determine the nature of the sources and theinterstellar extinction. We have observed about 16 square degrees with a sensitivity approaching 10-20mJy, detecting ~10^5 sources,mostly AGB stars,red giants and young stars. The main features of the ISOGAL survey and the observations are summarized in this paper,together with a brief discussion of data processing and quality. The primary ISOGAL products are described briefly (a full description is given in Schuller et al. 2003, astro-ph/0304309): viz. the images and theISOGAL-DENIS five-wavelength point source catalogue. The main scientific results already derived or in progress are summarized. These include astrometrically calibrated 7 and 15um images,determining structures of resolved sources; identification and properties of interstellar dark clouds; quantification of the infrared extinction law and source dereddening; analysis of red giant and (especially) AGB stellar populations in the central Bulge,determining luminosity,presence of circumstellar dust and mass--loss rate,and source classification,supplemented in some cases by ISO/CVF spectroscopy; detection of young stellar objects of diverse types,especially in the inner Bulge with information about the present and recent star formation rate; identification of foreground sources with mid-IR excess. These results are the subject of about 25 refereed papers published or in preparation.

Explanatory Supplement of the ISOGAL-DENIS Point Source Catalogue

We present version 1.0 of the ISOGAL-DENIS Point Source Catalogue (PSC), containing more than 100,000 point sources detected at 7 and/or 15 micron in the ISOGAL survey of the inner Galaxy with the ISOCAM instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). These sources are cross-identified, wherever possible, with near-infrared (0.8-2.2 micron) data from the DENIS survey. The overall surface covered by the ISOGAL survey is about 16 square degrees, mostly (95%) distributed near the Galactic plane (|b| < 1 deg), where the source extraction can become confusion limited and perturbed by the high background emission. Therefore, special care has been taken aimed at limiting the photometric error to ~0.2 magnitude down to a sensitivity limit of typically 10 mJy. The present paper gives a complete description of the entries and the information which can be found in this catalogue, as well as a detailed discussion of the data processing and the quality checks which have been completed. The catalogue is available via the VizieR Service at the Centre de Données Astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS, http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/VizieR/) and also via the server at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (http://www-isogal.iap.fr/). Infrared stellar populations in the central parts of the Milky Way galaxy

Near- and mid-IR survey data from DENIS and ISOGAL are used to investigate the structure and formation history of the inner 10 degree (1.4 kpc) of the Milky Way galaxy. Synthetic bolometric corrections and extinction coefficients in the near- and mid-IR are derived for stars of different spectral types, to allow the transformation of theoretical isochrones into observable colour-magnitude diagrams. The observed IR colour-magnitude diagrams are used to derive the extinction, metallicity and age for individual stars. The inner galaxy is dominated by an old population (> 7 Gyr). In addition, an intermediate-age population (200 Myr to 7 Gyr) is detected, which is consistent with the presence of a few hundred Asymptotic Giant Branch stars with heavy mass loss. Furthermore, young stars (< 200 Myr) are found across the inner Bulge. The metallicities of these stellar population components are discussed. These results can be interpreted in terms of an early epoch of intense star formation and chemical enrichment which shaped the bulk of the Bulge and nucleus, and a more continuous star formation history which gradually shaped the disk from the accretion of sub-solar metallicity gas from the halo. A possible increase in star formation about 200 Myr ago might have been triggered by a minor merger. Ever since the formation of the first stars, mechanisms have been at play that mix the populations from the nucleus, Bulge and disk. Luminosity functions across the inner galactic plane indicate the presence of an inclined (bar) structure at > 1 kpc from the galactic centre, near the inner Lindblad resonance. The innermost part of the Bulge, within about 1 kpc from the galactic centre, seems azimuthally symmetric.

Multi-wavelength study of the nebula associated with the galactic LBV candidate HD 168625

We present high resolution HST imaging of the nebula associated with the galactic LBV candidate HD 168625, together with ISO imaging and AAT echelle spectroscopy. The overall nebular morphology is elliptical with the major axis at PA ~ 120 deg. The dimensions of the nebula are 12'' x 16''.7 at Halpha and 15''.5 x 23''.5 at 4 micron. In the HST Halpha image, the nebula is resolved into a complex structure of filaments and arcs of different brightness. The asymmetry is lost in the HST continuum image where the nebula appears more diffuse and richer in filaments and clumps with the shape of cometary tails. At 11.3 micron the nebular emission peaks in two diametrically opposite lobes, placed on the nebula boundaries and along its major axis. A very faint loop is also visible at optical wavelengths, north and south of the shell. We suggest that the nebula is an ellipsoid with projected sizes of 14'' and 9'' (0.19 pc x 0.12 pc) along the RA and DEC directions, respectively. This ellipsoid is expanding at 19 km/s and is dynamically as old as ~ 4800 yrs; it probably interacts with the stellar wind and the loop so that PAH emission is detected from its caps, i.e. the lobes seen in the ISO images. The chemistry of the loop suggests that it is composed of un-processed material, probably from the local interstellar medium swept by the stellar wind.

86 GHz SiO maser survey of late-type stars in the Inner Galaxy. I. Observational data

We present 86 GHz (v = 1, J = 2 -1) SiO maser line observations with the IRAM 30-m telescope of a sample of 441 late-type stars in the Inner Galaxy (-4 degr < l < +30 degr). These stars were selected on basis of their infrared magnitudes and colours from the ISOGAL and MSX catalogues. SiO maser emission was detected in 271 sources, and their line-of-sight velocities indicate that the stars are located in the Inner Galaxy. These new detections double the number of line-of-sight velocities available from previous SiO and OH maser observations in the area covered by our survey and are, together with other samples of e.g. OH/IR stars, useful for kinematic studies of the central parts of the Galaxy.

Deep HST-WFPC2 photometry of NGC 288. I. Binary Systems and Blue Stragglers

We present the first results of a deep WFPC2 photometric survey of the loose galactic globular cluster NGC 288. The fraction of binary systems is estimated from the color distribution of objects near the Main Sequence (MS) with a method analogous to that introduced by Rubenstein & Bailyn(1997). We have unequivocally detected a significant population of binary systems which has a radial distribution that has been significantly influenced by mass segregation. In the inner region of the cluster (r<1 r_h = 1.6 r_c) the binary fraction (f_b) lies in the range 0.08--0.38 regardless of the assumed distribution of mass ratios, F(q). The most probable f_b lies between 0.10 and 0.20 depending on the adopted F(q). On the other hand, in the outer region (r> 1 r_h), f_b must be less than 0.10, and the most likely value is 0.0, independently of the adopted F(q). The detected population of binaries is dominated by primordial systems. The specific frequency of Blue Straggler Stars (BSS) is exceptionally high, suggesting that the BSS production mechanism via binary evolution can be very efficient. A large population of BSS is possible even in low density environments if a sufficient reservoir of primordial binaries is available. The observed distribution of BSS in the Color Magnitude Diagram is not compatible with a rate of BSS production which has been constant in time, if it is assumed that all the BSS are formed by the merging of two stars.

HST - WFPC2 photometry of the globular cluster ngc 288: binary systems, blue stragglers and very blue stars

We report on new WFPC2 observations of the globular cluster NGC 288, focusing our attention on peculiar stars. A very pronounced binary sequence, paralleling the ordinary Main Sequence (MS) is clearly observed in the Color Magnitude Diagram (CMD) and a huge relative fraction of Blue Straggler Stars is measured. The dataset offers the opportunity of studying the evolution of a large population of binaries (and binary evolution by-products) in a low density environment, where the evolution of such systems is not dominated by collisions and encounters. Three (very) Extreme Horizontal Branch Stars have been found, all lying outside of the cluster core.
