Mechanism of hopping transport in disordered Mott insulators

By using a combination of detailed experimental studies and simple theoretical arguments, we identify a novel mechanism characterizing the hopping transport in the Mott insulating phase of Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ near the metal-insulator transition. The hopping exponent $α$ shows a systematic evolution from a value of $α=1/2$ deeper in the insulator to the conventional Mott value $α=1/3$ closer to the transition. This behavior, which we argue to be a universal feature of disordered Mott systems close to the metal-insulator transition, is shown to reflect the gradual emergence of disorder-induced localized electronic states populating the Mott-Hubbard gap.

Incommensurate magnetic ordering in Sr_2Ru_(1-x)Ti_xO_4

In $\rm Sr_2RuO_4$ the spin excitation spectrum is dominated by incommensurate fluctuations at q=(0.3 0.3 q$_z$), which arise from Fermi-surface nesting. We show that upon Ti substitution, known to suppress superconductivity, a short range magnetic order develops with a propagation vector (0.307 0.307 1). This finding confirms that superconducting $\rm Sr_2RuO_4$ is extremely close to an incommensurate spin density wave instability. In addition, the ordered moment in \srton ~ points along the c-direction, which indicates that the incommensurate spin fluctuations exhibit the anisotropy required to explain a p-wave spin triplet pairing.

Magnetic ordering in Sr2RuO4 induced by nonmagnetic impurities

We report unusual effects of nonmagnetic impurities on the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. The substitution of nonmagnetic Ti4+ for Ru4+ induces localized-moment magnetism characterized by unexpected Ising anisotropy with the easy axis along the interlayer c direction. Furthermore, for x(Ti) > 0.03 magnetic ordering occurs in the metallic state with the remnant magnetization along the c-axis. We argue that the localized moments are induced in the Ru4+ and/or oxygen ions surrounding Ti4+ and that the ordering is due to their interaction mediated by itinerant Ru-4d electrons with strong spin fluctuations.
