Two-dimensional chromium bismuthate: A room-temperature Ising ferromagnet with tunable magneto-optical response

We present a density functional theory (DFT) based study of a two-dimensional phase of chromium bismuthate (CrBi), previously unknown material with exceptional magnetic and magnetooptical characteristics. Monolayer CrBi is a ferromagnetic metal with strong spin-orbit coupling induced by the heavy bismuth atoms, resulting in a strongly anisotropic Ising-type magnetic ordering with the Curie temperature estimated to be higher than 300 K. The electronic structure of the system is topologically nontrivial, giving rise to a nonzero Berry curvature in the ground magnetic state, leading to the anomalous Hall effect with the conductivity plateau of $\sim$1.5 $e^2/h$ at the Fermi level. Remarkably, the Hall conductivity and the magnetooptical constant are found to be strongly dependent on the direction of magnetization. Besides, monolayer CrBi demonstrates the polar magnetooptical Kerr effect in the visible and near-ultraviolet spectral ranges with the maximum rotation angles of up to 10 mrad. Our findinds suggest that monolayer CrBi is a promising system for practical applications in magnetooptical and spintronic devices.

Semimetal behavior of bilayer stanene

Stanene is a two-dimensional (2D) buckled honeycomb structure which has been studied recently owing to its promising electronic properties for potential electronic and spintronic applications in nanodevices. In this article, we present a first-principles study of electronic properties of fluorinated bilayer stanene. The effect of tensile strain, intrinsic spin-orbit, and van der Waals interactions are considered within the framework of density functional theory. The electronic band structure shows a very small overlap between valence and conduction bands at the {\Gamma} point which is a characteristic of semimetal in fluorinated bilayer stanene. A relatively high value of tensile strain is needed to open an energy band gap in the electronic band structure and the parity analysis reveals that the strained nanostructure is a trivial insulator. According to our results, despite the monolayer fluorinated stanene, the bilayer one is not an appropriate candidate for topological insulator.

Topological phases in Bi/Sb planar and buckled honeycomb monolayers

We investigate topological phases in two-dimensional Bi/Sb honeycomb crystals considering planar, buckled, freestanding and deposited on a substrate structures. We use the multi-orbital tight-binding model and compare results with density functional theory methods. We distinguish topological phases by calculating topological invariants, analyze edge states of systems in a ribbon geometry and by looking at their entanglement spectra. We show that weak coupling to the substrate of buckled and planar crystals is sufficient to lead to a transition to the $Z_2$ topological insulator phase. Topological crystalline insulator (TCI) phase exhibits a pair of edge states in the semi-infinite geometry and in the entanglement spectrum. Transport calculations for TCI phases show robust quantized conductance even in a presence of symmetry-breaking disorder.

Effect of long-range structural corrugations on magnetotransport properties of phosphorene in tilted magnetic field

Rippling is an inherent quality of two-dimensional materials playing an important role in determining their properties. Here, we study the effect of structural corrugations on the electronic and transport properties of monolayer black phosphorus (phosphorene) in the presence of tilted magnetic field. We follow a perturbative approach to obtain analytical corrections to the spectrum of Landau levels induced by a long-wavelength corrugation potential. We show that surface corrugations have a non-negligible effect on the electronic spectrum of phosphorene in tilted magnetic field. Particularly, the Landau levels are shown to exhibit deviations from the linear field dependence. The observed effect become especially pronounced at large tilt angles and corrugation amplitudes. Magnetotransport properties are further examined in the low temperature regime taking into account impurity scattering. We calculate magnetic field dependence of the longitudinal and Hall resistivities and find that the nonlinear effects reflecting the corrugation might be observed even in moderate fields (\mbox{$B<10$ T}).

First principle and tight-binding study of strained SnC

We study the electronic and optical properties of strained single-layer SnC in the density functional theory (DFT) and tight-binding models. We extract the hopping parameters tight-binding Hamiltonian for monolayer SnC by considering the DFT results as a reference point. We also examine the phonon spectra in the scheme of DFT, and analyze the bonding character by using Mulliken bond population. Moreover, we show that the band gap modulation and transition from indirect to direct band gap in the compressive strained SnC. The applied tensile strain reduces the band gap and eventually the semiconductor to semimetal transition occurs for 7.5\% of tensile strain. In the framework of tight-binding model, the effect of spin-orbit coupling on energy spectrum are also discussed. We indicate that while tensile strain closes the band gap, spin-orbit gap is still present which is order of $\sim 40$ meV at the $\Gamma$ point. The substrate effect is modeled through a staggered sub-lattice potential in the tight-binding approximation. The optical properties of pristine and strained SnC are also examined in the DFT scheme. We present the modulation of real and imaginary parts of dielectric function under applied strain.

Topological phase in oxidized zigzag stanene nanoribbons

First-principles and semi-empirical tight binding calculations were performed to understand the adsorption of oxygen on the surface of two dimensional (2D) and zigzag stanene nano-ribbons. The intrinsic spin-orbit interaction is considered in the Kane-Mele tight binding model. The adsorption of an oxygen atom or molecule on the 2D stanene opens an electronic energy band gap. We investigate the helical edge states and topological phase in the pure zigzag stanene nano-ribbons. The adsorption of oxygen atoms on the zigzag stanene nano-ribbons deforms the helical edge states at the Fermi level which causes topological (non-trivial) to trivial phase transition. The structural stability of the systems is checked by performing $\Gamma$-point phonon calculations. The adsorption of an oxygen atom or molecule on the 2D staneneSpecific arrangements of adsorbed oxygen atoms on the surface of zigzag stanene nano-ribbons conserve the topological phase which has potential applications in future nano-electronic devices.

Electronic and optical properties of bilayer blue phosphorus

We investigate the electronic and optical properties of monolayer and stacking dependent bilayer blue phosphorus in the framework of density functional theory (DFT) and tight-binding approximations. We extract the hopping parameters of TB Hamiltonian for monolayer and bilayer blue phosphorus by using the DFT results. The variation of energy band gap with applied external electric field for two different stacks of bilayer blue phosphorus are also shown. We examine the linear response of the systems due to the external electromagnetic radiation in terms of the dielectric functions in the DFT theory. The relatively large electronic band gap and possibility of exfoliation form bulk structure due to weak interlayer coupling, make blue phosphorus an appropriate candidate for future electronic devices.
