Input to the ESPPU: The LUXE Experiment

This document presents an overview of LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment), an experiment that will combine the high-quality and high-energy electron beam of the European XFEL with a high-intensity laser, to explore the uncharted terrain of strong-field quantum electrodynamics. The scientific case, facility, and detector setup are presented together with an overview of the foreseen timeline and expected capital costs.

Dependence on laser intensity of the number-weighted angular distribution of Compton-scattered photon beams

Inverse Compton scattering of an ultra-relativistic electron in the field of a high-intensity laser produces photon beams with angular and spectral distributions that are strongly dependent on the laser intensity. Here, we show that the laser intensity at the interaction point can be accurately inferred from the measurement of the angular number-density distribution of Compton-scattered photon beams. The theory, corroborated by numerical simulations, is accurate to within 10\% in a wide range of laser intensities (dimensionless intensity $5 \leq a_0 \leq 50$) and electron energies (250 MeV $\leq E \leq $ 15 GeV), and accounts for experimental features such as the finite transverse size of the electron beam, low-energy cut-offs in the photon detector, and the possibility of a transverse misalignment between the electron beam and the laser focus.

Technical Design Report for the LUXE Experiment

This Technical Design Report presents a detailed description of all aspects of the LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment), an experiment that will combine the high-quality and high-energy electron beam of the European XFEL with a high-intensity laser, to explore the uncharted terrain of strong-field quantum electrodynamics characterised by both high energy and high intensity, reaching the Schwinger field and beyond. The further implications for the search of physics beyond the Standard Model are also discussed.

Positron driven muon source for a muon collider

The design of a future multi-TeV muon collider needs new ideas to overcome the technological challenges related to muon production, cooling, accumulation and acceleration. In this paper a layout of a positron driven muon source known as the Low EMittance Muon Accelerator (LEMMA) concept is presented. The positron beam, stored in a ring with high energy acceptance and low emittance, is extracted and driven to a multi-target system, to produce muon pairs at threshold. This solution alleviates the issues related to the power deposited and the integrated Peak Energy Density Deposition (PEDD) on the targets. Muons produced in the multi-target system will then be accumulated before acceleration and injection in the collider. A multi-target line lattice has been designed to cope with the focusing of both the positron and muon beams. Studies on the number, material and thickness of the targets have been carried out. A general layout of the overall scheme and a description is presented, as well as plans for future R&D.

Proceedings of SuperB Workshop VI: New Physics at the Super Flavor Factory

The sixth SuperB Workshop was convened in response to questions posed by the INFN Review Committee, evaluating the SuperB project at the request of INFN. The working groups addressed the capability of a high-luminosity flavor factory that can gather a data sample of 50 to 75 /ab in five years to elucidate New Physics phenomena unearthed at the LHC. This report summarizes the results of the Workshop.
