Sign reversal of ac Josephson current in a ferromagnetic Josephson junction

The ac Josephson effect in a ferromagnetic Josephson junction, which is composed of two superconductors separated by a ferromagnetic metal (FM), is studied by a tunneling Hamiltonian and Green's function method. We obtain two types of superconducting phase dependent current, i.e., Josephson current and quasiparticle-pair-interference current (QPIC). These currents change their signs with thickness of the FM layer due to the 0-$π$ transition characteristic to the ferromagnetic Josephson junction. As a function of applied voltage, the Josephson critical current shows a logarithmic divergence called the Riedel peak at the gap voltage, while the QPIC shows a discontinuous jump. The Riedel peak reverses due to the 0-$π$ transition and disappears near the 0-$π$ transition point. The discontinuous jump in the QPIC also represents similar behaviors to the Riedel peak. These results are in contrast to the conventional ones.

Origin of spatial variation of pairing gap in Bi-based high-Tc cuprates

Recently, scanning tunneling microscopy on Bi-2212 cuprate superconductor has revealed a spatial variation of the energy gap that is directly correlated with a modulation of the apical oxygen position. We identify two mechanisms by which out-of-plane oxygens can modulate the pairing interaction within the CuO_2 layer: a covalency between the x^2-y^2 band and apical p-orbital, and a screening of correlation U by apical oxygen polarization. Both effects strongly depend on the apical oxygen position and their cooperative action explains the experiment.

FMR induced Josephson Current in a Superconductor/Ferromagnet/Superconductor Junction

We propose the phase dynamics induced by spin waves in a superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor (SC/FM/SC) Josephson junction. The resistively shunted junction (RSJ) model, which describes the dynamics of superconducting phase difference, is extended to include the spin wave excitation by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) using the gauge invariant phase difference between two s-wave superconductors. The current-voltage characteristics show step structures when the magnetization in FM is driven by tuning the microwave frequency to FMR in the SC/FM/SC junction. The result presents a new route to observe the spin wave excitation using the Josephson effect.

Kinematic and Chemical constraints on the formation of M31's inner and outer halo

The halo of M31 shows a wealth of substructures that are consistent with satellite accretion. Here we report on kinematic and abundance results from Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy in the calcium triplet region of over 3500 red giant star candidates along the minor axis and in off-axis spheroid fields of M31. Our data reach out to large radial distances of 160 kpc. The derived velocity distributions show a kinematically cold substructure at 17 kpc that has been reported before. We devise an improved method to measure accurate metallicities from the calcium triplet in low signal-to-noise spectra using a coaddition of the individual lines. The resulting distribution leads us to note an even stronger gradient in the abundance distribution along M31's minor axis than previously detected. The mean metallicity in the outer halo reaches below -2 dex, with individual values as low as -2.6 dex. In the inner spheroid, at 17-19 kpc, we find a sharp decline of ~0.5 dex in metallicity, which roughly coincides with the edge of an extended disk, previously detected from star count maps. A large fraction of red giants in the most distant fields are likely members of M33's overlapping halo. A comparison of our velocities with those predicted by new N-body simulations argues that the event responsible for the giant Stream is most likely not responsible for the full population of the inner halo; we show further that the abundance distribution of the Stream is different from that of the inner halo, from which it becomes evident that the merger event that formed the outer halo cannot have contributed any significant material to the inner spheroid. All this evidence of severe structure changes in the halo suggests a high degree of infall and stochastic abundance accretion governing the build-up of M31's halo. (Abridged)

Coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in self-doped bilayer t-t'-J model

A self-doped bilayer t-t'-J model of an electron- and a hole-doped planes is studied by the slave-boson mean-field theory. A hopping integral between the differently doped planes, which are generated by a site potential, are renormalized by the electron-electron correlation. We find coexistent phases of antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting orders, although the magnitudes of order parameters become more dissimilar in the bilayer away from half-filling. Fermi surfaces (FS's) with the AFM order show two pockets around the nodal and the anti-nodal regions. These results look like a composite of electron- and hole-doped FS's. In the nodal direction, the FS splitting is absent even in the bilayer system, since one band is flat due to the AFM order.

Relativistic Tennis with Photons: Demonstration of Frequency Upshifting by a Relativistic Flying Mirror through Two Colliding Laser Pulses

Since the advent of chirped pulse amplification1 the peak power of lasers has grown dramatically and opened the new branch of high field science, delivering the focused irradiance, electric fields of which drive electrons into the relativistic regime. In a plasma wake wave generated by such a laser, modulations of the electron density naturally and robustly take the shape of paraboloidal dense shells, separated by evacuated regions, moving almost at the speed of light. When we inject another counter-propagating laser pulse, it is partially reflected from the shells, acting as relativistic flying (semi-transparent) mirrors, producing an extremely time-compressed frequency-multiplied pulse which may be focused tightly to the diffraction limit. This is as if the counterstreaming laser pulse bounces off a relativistically swung tennis racket, turning the ball of the laser photons into another ball of coherent X-ray photons but with a form extremely relativistically compressed to attosecond and zeptosecond levels. Here we report the first demonstration of the frequency multiplication detected from the reflection of a weak laser pulse in the region of the wake wave generated by the driver pulse in helium plasma. This leads to the possibility of very strong pulse compression and extreme coherent light intensification. This Relativistic Tennis with photon beams is demonstrated leading to the possibility toward reaching enormous electromagnetic field intensification and finally approaching the Schwinger field, toward which the vacuum nonlinearly warps and eventually breaks, producing electron-positron pairs.

Role of magnetic scattering in 0-pi transitions in a superconductor/ferromagnetic metal/superconductor junction

We study the influence of magnetic scattering on the Josephson critical current, Ic, in a superconductor/ferromagnetic metal/superconductor (SFS) junction by a tunneling Hamiltonian approach. An analytical formula of Ic is given in the fourth order perturbation theory as regards the tunneling matrix element. The Ic exhibits the damped oscillatory dependence on the thickness of the ferromagnetic metal, d, and shows the transition between 0- and pi-states with d. When the superconducting transition temperature is comparable to the ferromagnetic Curie temperature, the period of oscillation is obviously changed by increasing temperature, T, due to the magnetic scattering, which induces the 0-pi transition with T. The magnetic scattering provides rich variety of Josephson effect in the SFS junction. Our results present an appropriate condition of a superconductor and a ferromagnetic metal to control the 0- and the pi-states.

MITSuME--Multicolor Imaging Telescopes for Survey and Monstrous Explosions

Development of MITSuME is reported. Two 50-cm optical telescopes have been built at Akeno in Yamanashi prefecture and at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO) in Okayama prefecture. Three CCD cameras for simultaneous g'RcIc photometry are to be mounted on each focal plane, covering a wide FOV of about 30" x 30". The limiting magnitude at V is fainter than 18. In addition to these two optical telescopes, a 91-cm IR telescope with a 1 deg x 1 deg field of view is being built at OAO, which performs photometry in YJHK bands. These robotic telescopes can start the observation of counterparts of a GRB within a minute from an alert. We aim to obtain photometric redshifts exceeding 10 with these telescopes. The performance and the current construction status of the telescopes are presented.

Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) on Board Suzaku

The Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) on board Suzaku covers a wide energy range from 10 keV to 600 keV by combination of silicon PIN diodes and GSO scintillators. The HXD is designed to achieve an extremely low in-orbit back ground based on a combination of new techniques, including the concept of well-type active shield counter. With an effective area of 142 cm^2 at 20 keV and 273 cm2 at 150 keV, the background level at the sea level reached ~1x10^{-5} cts s^{-1} cm^{-2} keV^{-1} at 30 keV for the PI N diodes, and ~2x10^{-5} cts s^{-1} cm^{-2} keV^{-1} at 100 keV, and ~7x10^{-6} cts s^{-1} cm^{-2} keV^{-1} at 200 keV for the phoswich counter. Tight active shielding of the HXD results in a large array of guard counters surrounding the main detector parts. These anti-coincidence counters, made of ~4 cm thick BGO crystals, have a large effective area for sub-MeV to MeV gamma-rays. They work as an excellent gamma-ray burst monitor with limited angular resolution (~5 degree). The on-board signal-processing system and the data transmitted to the ground are also described.

Charge Imbalance Effects on Interlayer Hopping and Fermi Surfaces in Multilayered High-T_c Cuprates

We study doping dependence of interlayer hoppings, t_\perp, in multilayered cuprates with four or more CuO_2 planes in a unit cell. When the double occupancy is forbidden in the plane, an effective amplitude of t_\perp in the Gutzwiller approximation is shown to be proportional to the square root of the product of doping rates in adjacent two planes, i.e., t^eff_\perp \propto t_\perp \sqrt{δ_1δ_2}, where δ_1 and δ_2 represent the doping rates of the two planes. More than three-layered cuprates have two kinds of \cuo planes, i.e., inner- and outer planes (IP and OP), resulting in two different values of t^eff_{\perp}, i.e., t^eff_\perp 1 \propto t_\perp \sqrt{δ_IP δ_IP} between IP's, and t^eff_\perp 2 \propto t_\perp \sqrt{δ_IP δ_OP} between IP and OP. Fermi surfaces are calculated in the four-layered t-t'-t''-J model by the mean-field theory. The order parameters, the renormalization factor of t_\perp, and the site-potential making the charge imbalance between IP and OP are self-consistently determined for several doping rates. We show the interlayer splitting of the Fermi surfaces, which may be observed in the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurement.

The search for optical emission on and before the GRB trigger with the WIDGET telescope

WIDGET is a robotic telescope for monitoring the HETE-2 field-of-view to detect Gamma-ray Burst optical flashes or possible optical precursors. The system has 62degx62deg wide field-of-view which covers about 80% of HETE-2 one with a 2kx2k Apogee U10 CCD camera and a Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 wide-angle lens without a bandpass filter. WIDGET has been in operation since June 2004 at Akeno observing site where is about 200 km apart from Tokyo. Typical limiting magnitude with S/N=3 at the site is V=10mag for 5 seconds exposure and V=11mag for 30 seconds exposure. We had already six coincident observations with HETE-2 position alerts. It was, however, cloudy for all cases due to rainy season in Japan. Expected number of coincident observations under clear sky is about 5 events per year. We will extend the system in early 2005 for Swift era to monitor optical transients in wider field-of-view, multi-color or polarization modes.

Super-critical Accretion Flows around Black Holes: Two-dimensional, Radiation-pressure-dominated Disks with Photon-trapping

The quasi-steady structure of super-critical accretion flows around a black hole is studied based on the two-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamical (2D-RHD) simulations. The super-critical flow is composed of two parts: the disk region and the outflow regions above and below the disk. Within the disk region the circular motion as well as the patchy density structure are observed, which is caused by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and probably by convection. The mass-accretion rate decreases inward, roughly in proportion to the radius, and the remaining part of the disk material leaves the disk to form outflow because of strong radiation pressure force. We confirm that photon trapping plays an important role within the disk. Thus, matter can fall onto the black hole at a rate exceeding the Eddington rate. The emission is highly anisotropic and moderately collimated so that the apparent luminosity can exceed the Eddington luminosity by a factor of a few in the face-on view. The mass-accretion rate onto the black hole increases with increase of the absorption opacity (metalicity) of the accreting matter. This implies that the black hole tends to grow up faster in the metal rich regions as in starburst galaxies or star-forming regions.

Effects of antiferromagnetic planes on the superconducting properties of multilayered high-Tc cuprates

We propose a mechanism for high critical temperature (T_c) in the coexistent phase of superconducting- (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AF) CuO_2 planes in multilayered cuprates. The Josephson coupling between the SC planes separated by an AF insulator (Mott insulator) is calculated perturbatively up to the fourth order in terms of the hopping integral between adjacent CuO_2 planes. It is shown that the AF exchange splitting in the AF plane suppresses the so-called pi-Josephson coupling, and the long-ranged 0-Josephson coupling leads to coexistence with a rather high value of T_c.

Detection of Gamma-rays around 1TeV from RX J0852.0-4622 by CANGAROO-II

We have detected gamma-ray emission at the 6sigma level at energies greater than 500GeV from the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 (G266.2-1.2) using the CANGAROO-II Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT). The flux was 0.12 times of that of Crab at 1TeV. The signal centroid is consistent with the peak of the X-ray emission in the north-west rim of the remnant.

Detection of Sub-TeV Gamma-Rays from the Galactic Center Direction by CANGAROO-II

We have detected sub-TeV gamma-ray emission from the direction of the Galactic Center (GC) using the CANGAROO-II Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT). We detected a statistically signicant excess at energies greater than 250GeV. The flux was one order of magnitude lower than that of Crab at 1 TeV with a soft spectrum E^{-4.6+-0.5}. The signal centroid is consistent with the GC direction and the observed prole is consistent with a point-like source. Our data suggests that the GeV source 3EG J1746-2851 is identical with this TeV source and we study the combined spectra to determine the possible origin of the gamma-ray emission. We also obtain an upper limit on the cold dark-matter density in the Galactic halo.

Friedel oscillations in a two-band Hubbard model for CuO chains

Friedel oscillations induced by open boundary conditions in a two-band Hubbard model for CuO chains are numerically studied. We find that for physically realistic parameters and close to quarter filling, these oscillations have a 2k_F modulation according with experimental results on YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}. In addition, we predict that, for the same parameters, as hole doping is reduced from quarter filling to half filling, Friedel oscillations would acquire a 4k_F modulation, typical of a strongly correlated electrons regime. The 4k_F modulation dominates also in the electron doped region. The range of parameters varied is very broad, and hence the results reported could apply to other cuprates and other strongly correlated compounds with quasi-one dimensional structures. On a more theoretical side, we stress the fact that the copper and oxygen subsystems should be described by two different Luttinger liquid exponents.

A Chandra detection of diffuse hard X-ray emission associated with the lobes of the radio galaxy 3C 452

An 80 ksec Chandra ACIS observation of the radio galaxy 3C 452 is reported. A diffuse X-ray emission associated with the lobes has been detected with high statistical significance, together with the X-ray nucleus of the host galaxy. The 0.5--5 keV ACIS spectrum of the diffuse emission is described by a two-component model, consisting of a soft thermal plasma emission from the host galaxy halo and a hard non-thermal power-law component. The hard component is ascribed to the inverse Comptonization of cosmic microwave background photons by the synchrotron emitting electrons in the lobes, because its spectral energy index, 0.68+-0.28, is consistent with the radio synchrotron index, 0.78. These results reveal a significant electron dominance in the lobes. The electrons are inferred to have a relatively uniform distribution, while the magnetic field is compressed toward the lobe periphery.
