A first look at quasi-Monte Carlo for lattice field theory problems

In this project we initiate an investigation of the applicability of Quasi-Monte Carlo methods to lattice field theories in order to improve the asymptotic error behavior of observables for such theories. In most cases the error of an observable calculated by averaging over random observations generated from an ordinary Monte Carlo simulation behaves like 1/sqrt(N), where N is the number of observations. By means of Quasi-Monte Carlo methods it is possible to improve this behavior for certain problems to up to 1/N. We adapted and applied this approach to simple systems like the quantum harmonic and anharmonic oscillator and verified an improved error scaling.

QCD Lambda parameter from Landau-gauge gluon and ghost correlations

We utilise a recently developed minimal MOM scheme to determine the QCD Lambda parameter from the gluon and ghost propagators in lattice Landau gauge. We discuss uncertainties in the analysis and report our preliminary zero and two flavour results, which are r_0*LambdaMS^{(0)}=0.62(1) and r_0*LambdaMS^{(2)}=0.60(3)(2), with the second error due to an extrapolation uncertainty.

Landau gauge ghost and gluon propagators in SU(2) lattice gauge theory: Gribov ambiguity revisited

We reinvestigate the problem of Gribov ambiguities within the Landau (or Lorentz) gauge for the ghost and gluon propagators in pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We make use of the full symmetry group of the action taking into account {\it large}, i.e. non-periodic $\mathbb{Z}(2)$ gauge transformations leaving lattice plaquettes invariant. Enlarging in this way the gauge orbits for any given gauge field configuration the Landau gauge can be fixed at higher local extrema of the gauge functional in comparison with standard (overrelaxation) techniques. This has a clearly visible effect not only for the ghost propagator at small momenta but also for the gluon propagator, in contrast to the common belief.

Spectral properties of the Landau gauge Faddeev-Popov operator in lattice gluodynamics

Recently we reported on the infrared behavior of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost dressing functions in SU(3) Wilson lattice gluodynamics with special emphasis on the Gribov problem. Here we add an investigation of the spectral properties of the Faddeev-Popov operator at $β$=5.8 and 6.2 for lattice sizes 12^4, 16^4 and 24^4. The larger the volume the more of its eigenvalues are found accumulated close to zero. Using the eigenmodes for the spectral representation it turns out that for our smallest lattice O(200) eigenmodes are sufficient to saturate the ghost propagator at lowest momentum. We associate exceptionally large values of the ghost propagator to extraordinary contributions of low-lying eigenmodes.

Studying the infrared region in Landau gauge QCD

We report on the progress we made in studying the infrared behavior of the ghost and gluon dressing functions in Landau gauge. Related to this we also investigate a running coupling given in terms of those functions and compare our results to those coming from the Dyson-Schwinger approach. We present first numerical results for the SU(3) ghost-ghost-gluon vertex renormalization constant. In addition the spectrum of low-lying eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Faddeev-Popov operator is determined. The saturation of the ghost propagator in terms of those eigenvalues and eigenmodes is discussed at lower momenta.

Universality check of Abelian Monopoles

We study the Abelian projected SU(2) lattice gauge theory after gauge fixing to the maximally Abelian gauge (MAG). In order to check the universality of the Abelian dominance we employ the tadpole improved tree level (TI) action. We show that the density of monopoles in the largest cluster (the IR component) is finite in the continuum limit which is approximated already at relatively large lattice spacing. The value itself is smaller than in the case of Wilson action. We present results for the ratio of the Abelian to non-Abelian string tension for both Wilson and TI actions for a number of lattice spacings in the range 0.06 fm < a < 0.35 fm. These results show that the ratio is between 0.9 and 0.95 for all considered values of lattice couplings and both actions. We compare the properties of the monopole clusters in two gauges - in MAG and in the Laplacian Abelian gauge (LAG). Whereas in MAG the infrared component of the monopole density shows a good convergence to the continuum limit, we find that in LAG it is even not clear whether a finite limit exists.

Towards the infrared limit in SU(3) Landau gauge lattice gluodynamics

We study the behavior of the gluon and ghost dressing functions in SU(3) Landau gauge at low momenta available on lattice sizes 12^4-32^4 at $β$=5.8, 6.0 and 6.2. We demonstrate the ghost dressing function to be systematically dependent on the choice of Gribov copies, while the influence on the gluon dressing function is not resolvable. The running coupling given in terms of these functions is found to be decreasing for momenta q<0.6 GeV. We study also effects of the finite volume and of the lattice discretization.

The influence of Gribov copies on the gluon and ghost propagator

The dependence of the gluon and ghost propagator in pure SU(3) gauge theory on the choice of Gribov copies in Landau gauge is studied. Simulations were performed on several lattice sizes at $β$=5.8, 6.0 and 6.2. In the infrared region the ghost propagator turns out to depend on the choice, while the impact on the gluon propagator is not resolvable. Also the eigenvalue distribution of the Faddeev-Popov operator is sensitive to Gribov copies.

The gluon and ghost propagator and the influence of Gribov copies

The dependence of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators on the choice of Gribov copies is studied in pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory. Whereas the influence on the gluon propagator is small, the ghost propagator becomes clearly affected by the copies in the infrared region. We compare our data with the infrared exponents predicted by the Dyson-Schwinger equation approach

A finite temperature investigation of dual superconductivity in the modified SO(3) lattice gauge theory

We study the SO(3) lattice gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions with the adjoint Wilson action modified by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ monopole suppression term and by means of the Pisa disorder operator. We find evidence for a finite temperature deconfinement transition driven by the condensation of U(1) magnetic charges. A finite-size scaling test shows consistency with the critical exponents of the 3D Ising model.

A numerical reinvestigation of the Aoki phase with N_f=2 Wilson fermions at zero temperature

We report on a numerical reinvestigation of the Aoki phase in lattice QCD with two flavors of Wilson fermions where the parity-flavor symmetry is spontaneously broken. For this purpose an explicitly symmetry-breaking source term $h\barψ i γ_{5} τ^{3}ψ$ was added to the fermion action. The order parameter $<\barψ i γ_{5}τ^{3}ψ>$ was computed with the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm at several values of $(β,κ,h)$ on lattices of sizes $4^4$ to $12^4$ and extrapolated to $h=0$. The existence of a parity-flavor breaking phase can be confirmed at $β=4.0$ and 4.3, while we do not find parity-flavor breaking at $β=4.6$ and 5.0.

On practical problems to compute the ghost propagator in SU(2) lattice gauge theory

In SU(2) lattice pure gauge theory we study numerically the dependence of the ghost propagator G(p) on the choice of Gribov copies in Lorentz (or Landau) gauge. We find that the effect of Gribov copies is essential in the scaling window region, however, it tends to decrease with increasing beta. On the other hand, we find that at larger beta-values very strong fluctuations appear which can make problematic the calculation of the ghost propagator.

The Aoki phase for N_f=2 Wilson fermions revisited

We report on a numerical reinvestigation of the Aoki phase in full lattice QCD with two flavors of unimproved Wilson fermions. For zero temperature the Aoki phase can be confirmed at inverse coupling $β=4.0$ and $β=4.3$, but not at $β=4.6$ and $β=5.0$. At non-zero temperature the Aoki phase was found to exist also at $β=4.6$.

Performance studies of the two-step multiboson algorithm in compact lattice QED

The performance of the two-step multiboson (TSMB) algorithm is investigated in comparison with the hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) method for compact lattice QED with standard Wilson fermions both in the Coulomb and confinement phases. The restriction to QED allows for extensive measurements of autocorrelation times. Preliminary results show that the TSMB algorithm is at least competitive with standard HMC.

Zero-momentum modes and chiral limit in compact lattice QED

The influence of zero-momentum gauge modes on physical observables is investigated for compact lattice QED with dynamical and quenched Wilson fermions. Within the Coulomb phase, zero-momentum modes are shown to hide the critical behaviour of gauge invariant fermion observables near the chiral limit. Methods for eliminating zero-momentum modes are discussed.

Definition of Magnetic Monopole Numbers for SU(N) Lattice Gauge-Higgs Models

A geometric definition for a magnetic charge of Abelian monopoles in SU(N) lattice gauge theories with Higgs fields is presented. The corresponding local monopole number defined for almost all field configurations does not require gauge fixing and is stable against small perturbations. Its topological content is that of a 3-cochain. A detailed prescription for calculating the local monopole number is worked out. Our method generalizes a magnetic charge definition previously invented by Phillips and Stone for SU(2).
