High Multiplicity Trigger for Long-Lived Particles in CMS detector

Searches for long-lived particles (LLPs) at the CMS experiment often involve unconventional event topologies that are difficult to efficiently select using standard trigger strategies. To improve sensitivity to such signatures during LHC Run~3 operation, a dedicated High Multiplicity Trigger (HMT) has been developed and deployed in the CMS trigger system. The trigger targets events containing unusually large numbers of hits in the CMS cathode strip chamber (CSC) muon detectors, a characteristic signature of several LLP scenarios involving displaced decays in the muon system. The HMT implementation, trigger logic, rate dependence with pileup, and operational stability are described. Optimized hit multiplicity thresholds are used to maintain acceptable trigger rates under high-luminosity and high-pileup conditions while preserving high efficiency across a broad range of LLP lifetimes and kinematic regimes. The trigger performance is evaluated using both simulated event samples and proton-proton collision data collected during Run~3 of the LHC. The HMT substantially extends the CMS sensitivity to non-standard signatures associated with LLP decays and provides a flexible platform for future searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Measurement of the total neutron cross section on argon in the 20 to 70 keV energy range

The cross section for neutron interactions on argon is an important design and operational parameter for a number of neutrino, dark matter, and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments which use liquid argon as a detection or shielding medium. There is a discrepancy between the evaluated total cross section in the $20$ to $70~\rm$\,keV neutron kinetic energy region given in the ENDF database and a single measurement conducted by an experiment with a thin target (0.2 atoms/barn) optimized for higher cross sections. This gives rise to significant uncertainty in the interaction length of neutrons in liquid argon. This discrepancy is now resolved by new results presented here from the Argon Resonance Transport Interaction Experiment (ARTIE), a thick target experiment (3.3 atoms/barn) optimized for the small cross sections in this energy region.

The CDFII Time-Of-Flight Detector and Impact on Beauty Flavor Tagging

The new CDFII detector incorporates a Time-of-Flight detector (TOF), employing plastic scintillator bars and fine-mesh photomultipliers. Since August 2001 the TOF system has been fully instrumented and integrated into the CDFII data acquisition system. With a design goal of $100 ps$ resolution the TOF system will provide at least two standard deviations separation between $K^{\pm}$ and $π^{\pm}$ for momenta $p<1.6 GeV/c$, complementing low momentum particle identification by means of the specific ionization energy loss measured in the drift chamber. We describe the design of the TOF detector and discuss the current status of its calibration and initial performances. Finally we review the expected impact of the TOF detector in the flavor tagging of neutral $B_S$ meson.
